Lin Huan'er, a top streamer at Keyu Streaming Company, finds herself in a heated live debate with fellow streamer Ai Qing over the classic romance novel, "Bye, Wild Weasel". While Ai Qing praises the story’s romantic ideals, Huan'er dismisses the female lead as being entirely too dependent on the author's "gold fingers" to survive, calling love a mere dessert rather than a necessity.

This cynical take prompts CEO Zeng to cut the broadcast, fearing it will offend Gao Haiming, the man currently negotiating to acquire the company. Undeterred, Huan'er confronts Zeng in the meeting room, where she meets Gao Haiming for the first time. Intrigued by her sharp perspective, Gao requests she host another stream focused on the same novel.

During this second broadcast, as Huan'er introduces a Wild Weasel fighter jet model—the hero’s favorite toy—she suddenly feels the world spinning and loses consciousness. She wakes up in 1999 inside an aircraft museum. Standing before her is Gao Haiming, though he treats her like a complete stranger. When a security guard demands compensation for a broken model, a woman named Zhu Mengmeng steps in to pay the debt, identifying herself as Huan'er’s best friend.

Disoriented, Huan'er soon receives a message on a pager, revealing she is trapped in a game based on "Bye, Wild Weasel". To return to reality, she must complete the game by making the hero, Gao Haiming, fall in love with her and propose. The rules are strict: she cannot reveal her true identity or change established character relationships. Any violation triggers a "Time Rewind" penalty, and she only has five chances.

After several resets for trying to explain the system or criticize the plot, Huan'er realizes she must follow the script. Her first task is to wire 10,000 yuan to her scumbag boyfriend, Ou Xiaojue, who is currently in the UK. In a clever move to avoid enriching a jerk, she wires him 10,000 Vietnamese Dong—worth only a few yuan—which the system accepts as a completed mission.

To advance the game, Huan'er joins Mengmeng for the grand opening of a major department store, knowing Gao Haiming is a stakeholder. Gao, the General Manager of Letao Group, is there to oversee his brands' entry into the mall. During the event, he is mocked by senior businessmen as the "Sanitary Pad King" due to his company's product line, but he remains composed, retorting that those who aren't progressive will be left behind.

Huan'er, meanwhile, spots a handsome man in a suit who fits the novel's physical description of the hero and mistakes him for her target. When she encounters the real Gao Haiming in a hallway, she assumes he is either a fellow player or a non-player character. She offers him a sum of money to help her manufacture a "fateful encounter" with the man she thinks is the lead.

Gao Haiming takes the money and executes a plan that involves him pushing a service cart into Huan'er, forcing her into the arms of her target. However, when Huan'er tries to flirt, she discovers the man is a philanderer wearing a wedding ring. She lashes out at him for being a scoundrel, only for Mengmeng to arrive and apologize to the man, calling him Mr. Lu.

Realizing she had the wrong person and that she had essentially paid the real hero to help her hit on a stranger, a frustrated Huan'er drags Mengmeng to an arcade to vent. While playing games, the two friends discuss their lives. Mengmeng, a wealthy cartoonist, expresses envy for Huan'er’s "romantic" long-distance relationship with Ou Xiaojue, unaware of his true nature.

Back at Mengmeng's place, Huan'er looks at a family photo and asks about her father and her "sister," Lin Le'er, whom Mengmeng describes as an eccentric child Huan'er is very protective of. As the day ends, Mengmeng confides that she is dreading a blind date her family arranged for the next day. Seeing an opportunity to help her friend and cause some harmless chaos, Huan'er agrees to go in Mengmeng's place to ruin the date. However, when she arrives at the meeting, she is shocked to find that the man waiting for her is the "extra money guy"—the real Gao Haiming.
