Zhu Mengmeng stands at the side of the stage for the "Most Beautiful Youthful Voice" audition, her palms sweating with nerves. Remembering Hu Tiehan’s encouraging words about ignoring the judgment of others, she focuses her mind, clearing away all distractions. Despite a momentary hesitation that almost causes the judges to skip her, she steps up and delivers a solid performance with impressive breath control.
The judges are struck by her talent, and she successfully passes the audition with an "Excellent" rating on her score sheet. At Letao Tower, Mr. Li visits Gao Haiming’s office. Due to the impressive sales performance of the new product line, Boli Capital, a foreign investment firm, has offered a cooperation proposal. Haiming is hesitant; he knows Boli is foreign-owned and fears that accepting their money would mean losing the autonomy of the brand he worked so hard to build.
He argues that he doesn't want their R&D restricted or their domestic brand turned into a mere "imported" label. Mr. Li reminds him that Letao is the result of many people’s hard work and urges him to consider the future trend of the market, asking him to think it over carefully before making a final decision. Meanwhile, Lin Huan'er receives a message on her pager from Haiming’s mother, Mei Yunzhi.
Having recently returned to the country, Mei Yunzhi has been feeling unwell and is currently hospitalized. She asks to meet Huan'er privately, specifically requesting that she not tell Haiming. Concerned, Huan'er immediately leaves the office, unaware that Haiming is quietly following her to the hospital. Inside the hospital room, Mei Yunzhi opens up to Huan'er about her past.
She confesses that during a period of deep family trouble and postpartum depression when Haiming was very young, she once tried to jump into the sea while holding him. This memory has left her with a lifetime of guilt, and she admits she has never known if her son truly forgave her. She asks Huan'er to provide Haiming with the happiness she feels she failed to give him.
Haiming chooses that moment to enter the room, questioning why she kept her illness a secret. Mei Yunzhi explains that the final diagnosis isn't out yet and she didn't want to worry him over what might be a minor issue. Haiming assures her that he has grown up and no longer holds a grudge.
He encourages her to stop living for the sake of the family and to finally pursue her own happiness and ideals, recalling how radiant she looked in her old photographs. Back at Zhu Mengmeng’s house, Huan'er consults the system through her pager. She wonders if she can simply stay by Haiming’s side forever if he never proposes, but the system warns her against exploiting bugs.
The pager reveals a stark reality: her time limit expires at the turn of the millennium. If she fails to complete her quest and receive a proposal by then, Haiming’s entire world will collapse and vanish forever. Terrified by the thought of losing him, Huan'er immediately calls Haiming and meets him, throwing herself into his arms. She tells him she wants to experience everything with him right now—going to the park, watching movies, and cooking together.
Haiming, oblivious to the existence of the system, comforts her and promises they have plenty of time to do everything she desires. The next day, the hospital results reveal that Mei Yunzhi’s tumor is benign. She is overjoyed to hear that Haiming and Huan'er have officially started their relationship. After Huan'er delivers breakfast to the hospital, the two head to work together.
To avoid office gossip, Huan'er insists on being dropped off early and even offers to park the car herself so they aren't seen entering the building together. In the office, she tries to remain low-profile, even hiding behind her computer monitor to avoid his gaze. However, Haiming is far from discreet.
He hands her the car keys in front of their colleagues, loudly mentioning that they are going home together later, and even goes out of his way to personally bring her tea in the breakroom. The office staff quickly picks up on the fact that their relationship is no longer just professional. While Haiming and Huan'er navigate their new romance, Gao Mingshan visits the hospital to see his wife. To his shock, Mei Yunzhi presents him with a divorce agreement.
She explains that after years of a loveless marriage and her recent health scare, she has realized that she must spend the rest of her life living for herself. Determined to help Haiming as much as possible in the time she has left, Huan'er begins working with renewed intensity. Haiming is confused by her sudden workaholic behavior, teasingly asking if she plans to jump to another company.
Seeing his warmth, Huan'er makes a serious request: she wants him to propose to her on New Year's Eve. When Haiming asks why that specific day, she mentions the popular legends about the world ending with the new millennium, telling him that if he proposes then, she will have no regrets even if the world truly ends. Haiming, moved by her sentiment, agrees. Zhu Mengmeng, meanwhile, begins her intensive training for the singing competition.
Her talent and high scores quickly draw the jealousy of other trainees, who mock her for standing in the center of the dance formation. Despite their attempts to bully her, Mengmeng remains focused and is ranked as the top performer in the first stage. She calls Hu Tiehan to share the news, and hearing his voice, she breaks down in tears from the pressure.
Tiehan comforts her, telling her to follow her heart and that he is always there for her. Back at the station, Tiehan isn't idle; he goes around borrowing his colleagues' phones, including his fellow officer Liu's, to cast as many votes for Mengmeng as possible, determined to see her succeed.
