Following the awkward encounter at Letao involving a ruined shirt and spilled glue, Lin Huan’er is summoned by Gao Mingshan for a private conversation in his car. Having heard that his son specifically requested her to manage their new collaboration, the Chairman asks how much money it will take for her to stay away from Gao Haiming.
Lin Huan’er, understanding the typical playbook of a business tycoon, doesn’t wait for him to beat around the bush; she openly asks for the check. She points out that his paternalistic approach to solving problems—specifically forcing a marriage alliance—is rather limited. To put Mingshan’s mind at ease, Lin Huan’er claims she only needs five months to finish her work as a liaison for her PR firm.
She assures him that a man of Gao Haiming’s perfect stature is far beyond her reach. Realizing that refusing money would only make her seem more suspicious, she negotiates a price. Though she initially suggests five thousand yuan to appear less threatening, Mingshan finds the amount insultingly low for his son's worth and hands over fifty thousand yuan to ensure she "knows her place" and remains sensible.
Lin Huan’er takes the money and departs happily, while Gao Haiming watches from a distance. To him, this confirms his view that she is no different from any other gold digger, though he finds their mutual use for one another convenient for his own plans to thwart his father’s control. Later, Gao Haiming attends a dinner with Xie Wanjun, who orders an extravagant meal featuring New Zealand King Salmon, Iberian ham, and La Tâche wine.
She spends the evening reminiscing about their school days when they were always the top two students, suggesting that they have always been a perfect unit. However, Haiming remains distant, stating that his current focus is entirely on his career and that he has no intention of following through with his father's hurried marriage announcement. After the meal, he asks his assistant, Luo Zhou, to drive Wanjun home.
During the ride, Wanjun tries to pry information out of Luo Zhou regarding Haiming’s relationship with Lin Huan’er. Following Haiming’s prior instructions, Luo Zhou leads her to believe there might be a romantic connection, which only steels Wanjun’s resolve not to give up. Meanwhile, Lin Huan’er spends time with Zhu Mengmeng playing games.
When Mengmeng mentions that their old friend Hu Tiehan used to be the best at such games, Lin Huan’er is struck by a memory from the original novel: Hu Tiehan is destined to die in the line of duty. She considers using her limited system restarts to intervene but worries about the consequences of triggering a rule punishment for two secondary characters.
She decides to save her remaining chances for her own survival, though the knowledge of his fate as a traffic cop weighs on her. The next day, Lin Huan’er visits Gao Haiming’s office and finds an intricate fighter jet model he spent the night assembling. Initially, she intends to ruin it with red paint as a form of protest against Letao’s supposed theft of her PR proposal. However, Haiming interrupts her and clarifies the misunderstanding.
He shows her a timestamped file on his phone from 11:07 AM that morning, proving that he had conceptualized the exact same marketing strategy hours before she delivered her proposal in the afternoon. With the air cleared, Haiming invites her on a personal date to discuss their partnership. They dine at a restaurant where Lin Huan’er, knowing his preferences from the book, orders "Angel Hair" pasta. Haiming is surprised by her choice, leading her to claim she has mind-reading abilities.
She attempts to analyze him, noting his many admirers and the heavy burdens of his career. Haiming, however, uses his own knowledge of psychology to see through her act. He notices her eyes darting to the upper left—a sign that she is searching her memory rather than observing him in the moment.
Despite debunking her "mind-reading," they share a rare moment of honesty where Haiming admits that he only likes the name of the dish, and that the bigger his business empire grows, the more constraints he faces. After the date, Lin Huan’er accidentally leaves her keys in Haiming’s car. He tracks her down at a roadside wonton stall to return them.
He teases her, noting that since she lives with Zhu Mengmeng, she likely didn’t need the keys to get inside, yet he chose to return them personally to keep their "performance" going. While eating wontons together—a sharp contrast to their previous Western meal—Haiming notices someone tracking them and taking photos.
He deliberately leans in close to Lin Huan’er, whispering that she shouldn't give up on their "game," ensuring the hidden photographers capture an intimate moment to further frustrate his father's plans. When Gao Haiming returns home, Luo Zhou notes that his boss seems uncharacteristically triumphant. However, the mood shifts when Haiming faces his father. Mingshan dismisses Haiming’s interest in independent R&D as a "muddy detour" and insists that the only way to save Letao is through the Fuchuang alliance.
He demands that Haiming break up with the "unsavory woman" and marry Wanjun. In contrast, Haiming’s mother later offers her quiet support. Having felt guilty for neglecting him during his childhood, she tells him that marriage is too important to sacrifice for business and that she will support whatever decision makes him happy. Seeking a moment of escape, Haiming invites Lin Huan’er to a Sky Garden for archery.
He patiently teaches her how to hold the bow, his hands over hers as they aim. They play a game of Truth or Dare where the loser must fulfill a request. Though Haiming nearly hits the bullseye, Lin Huan’er manages to win the round. During a lakeside picnic afterward, she serves him a specially brewed coffee she calls "Coffee on the Left Bank of the Seine."
They discuss their roles in the unfolding drama; Haiming describes himself as a "catalyst"—a substance that helps others react and change without being consumed by the reaction itself. He claims he doesn't want to interfere in her feelings, yet as he reaches out to fix her messy hair, the psychological distance between them continues to shrink.
