The Psychologist Episode 6 Recap
> The Psychologist Recap
Lili shared her embarrassment about trying to hold onto a man in front of so many people. He Dun suggested that the man must have some outstanding qualities. Lili chuckled, revealing that his most attractive quality was his wealth, explaining that she had grown up poor and now desired a wealthy partner, a habit she believed might be hard to change. He Dun offered two paths: to become Lili's psychological counselor or her good friend. Lili chose the latter.
She confided in He Dun about her childhood, where she never asked her mother for anything because the response was always, "Our family is poor, and we don't have the money." This instilled a deep-seated insecurity, making her constantly worry about losing her job and being unable to pay rent. She felt like someone who grew up in a marsh, constantly having to climb to survive.
He Dun explained that for clients with low self-worth, a person who loves them enough can help build their confidence and stable self-perception, protecting them from harm. She reiterated that she could offer this support as either a counselor or a friend. Lili, deeply touched, admitted her childhood wasn't lucky but felt fortunate to have He Dun now, and He Dun echoed the sentiment.
Later, as Lili returned to her office to complete her handover, she discovered that her colleague, Liu Meng, had long harbored jealousy toward her and was responsible for intentionally framing Lili, who was a vice-president level employee. Seeing Liu Meng's arrogant demeanor, Lili felt a sense of pity for her. Meanwhile, He Dun visited her mother at home. Upon arriving, she immediately discarded all the overnight food, urging her mother to prioritize her diet for better health.
During their conversation, her mother shrewdly deduced that He Dun had resigned from her job. He Dun's mother, knowing her daughter had always been sensible, expressed concern about the difficulties of running a private practice, feeling sympathetic towards her. She reassured He Dun that she could always come home if she ever needed help. He Dun's mother then proudly revealed that she had spent the previous night learning how to send WeChat red envelopes, intending to surprise her daughter.
When He Dun saw the large red envelope, she initially hesitated to accept it, feeling she was no longer a child who needed money. Her mother feigned disappointment, threatening to drink all the wine if He Dun refused. To appease her mother, He Dun accepted the money in front of her. Her mother celebrated by taking a small sip of wine, despite their previous agreement on limited consumption. That night, Lili's mother unexpectedly arrived at Lili's apartment.
Unlike He Dun's mother, Lili's mother seemed indifferent to her daughter's recent professional setback. Instead, she subtly, yet clearly, hinted at her need for money. Understanding her mother's intention, Lili told her she didn't need to visit in person and that she would transfer the money online. Satisfied, Lili's mother then left. The following day, Qian Kaiyi excitedly called He Dun, urging her to come quickly as "something serious has happened."
He Dun arrived at a dark space, which suddenly illuminated to reveal a newly redesigned live broadcast room. The room was filled with flowers, creating an open and airy environment, a deliberate choice by Qian Kaiyi to alleviate He Dun's past discomfort in enclosed spaces. He then earnestly knelt and invited her to co-host his radio program. Though deeply moved by his sincerity, He Dun was also taken aback by his gesture.
She promptly told him to stand up and accepted his offer. She added a condition: he must refrain from going to such great lengths for her in the future. Qian Kaiyi, feigning disappointment, playfully asked for a sincere compliment or a grateful hug instead. He then showed her around, pointing out the wall adorned with posters of her favorite records, and the integrated coffee bar, broadcast room, and director's room. He Dun approved of the setup, noting it was "good."
Concurrently, Ye Jiahui brought his grandmother, Mrs. Yun, to visit his new apartment, hoping she would consider moving in. Mrs. Yun, however, preferred to stay in the nursing home, where she had grown accustomed to her routine and enjoyed the company of her friends. She appreciated her grandson's filial piety but didn't wish to burden him. As they talked, He Dun arrived with some fruits.
Mrs. Yun, recognizing He Dun as Ye Jiahui's neighbor, was delighted and insisted she come inside. He Dun then realized that the many large boxes Ye Jiahui had moved earlier contained various medical instruments intended for his grandmother's care, including a transcranial magnetic stimulation device for physiotherapy.
He Dun inquired about his medical background, and Ye Jiahui explained that he studied clinical medicine as an undergraduate and graduate, then psychiatry abroad, but no longer practiced, having returned to care for his ailing grandmother at the nursing home as a medical counselor. He Dun noted the similarities and differences between psychiatry, which often involves medical treatment for conditions like parasecretion of brain antibodies, and psychology, which addresses abnormal mental issues in normal individuals without necessarily needing medication.
She then recalled that when they first met, he was drinking while on medication, and he confirmed that he studied psychiatry to heal himself, but still sometimes struggled. Back at the radio station, Qian Kaiyi gathered his team and presented them with a large stack of psychology books, demanding they read all of them within a week to enhance their "scientific literacy" and improve the show.
His colleagues complained about the overwhelming task, humorously comparing it to college entrance exam prep. Qian Kaiyi emphasized the need to understand psychology to effectively collaborate with He Dun and even "rival" her intellectually to create compelling content. He Dun, meanwhile, was at the library, researching broadcasting and media-related topics.
She received a phone call from Qian Kaiyi, who informed her that the station had finalized the theme for their inaugural episode: to educate the public on what psychological counseling is and identify who needs it. When He Dun expressed surprise at dedicating three hours to basic popularization, Qian Kaiyi confidently asserted his hosting skills, explaining the importance of "stating their purpose from the start" to clearly define the show's nature for listeners.
He also tasked her with devising a "powerful and sensational" opening remark related to psychological counseling. He Dun, admitting her lack of talent for such creative writing, was playfully teased by Qian Kaiyi, who offered to help her. Unbeknownst to He Dun, a young woman named Wen, a fervent fan of Qian Kaiyi, had been secretly following her.
Wen tracked He Dun to the radio station and, finding an opportune moment when no one was around, unfurled a banner that read, "The psychological counselor He Dun is a home wrecker." Later that night, as the program conducted its trial broadcast, Wen sneaked into the studio. Enraged at the sight of He Dun and Qian Kaiyi chatting and laughing, she brandished a small knife, holding it to a staff member's neck.
She demanded to know the nature of He Dun and Qian Kaiyi's relationship, accusing He Dun of being a bad person and blaming her for Qian Kaiyi's changed behavior and silence. Qian Kaiyi, upon arriving, recognized Wen and tried to calm her, urging her to release the staff member. He promised to listen to all her complaints and do whatever she wanted, if only she would put down the knife.
Wen, appearing to question his sincerity, then saw Qian Kaiyi holding He Dun's hand as he comforted her, prompting her to furiously demand, "Why are you holding hands with her? What is your relationship? It is really you!"
