Driven by the widespread plague, Bai Yaoyao and Xu Xuan both ventured into the depths of a village forest. Bai Yaoyao, following the demonic aura emanating from Wuji Orchid leaves, suddenly found herself confronted by a magical yellow sand barrier. This barrier, set up by Zi Xuan, trapped her within its powerful, life-threatening currents. Even with her sword, Bai Yaoyao found herself unable to resist.
In her confusion, Zi Xuan's spirit materialized, urging her to use sword energy against the barrier if such a situation arose again. Seeing his familiar face, Bai Yaoyao realized with certainty that Xu Xuan was the reincarnation of Zi Xuan, for two people could not share the same face without a deeper connection. Zi Xuan's spirit revealed that someone was deliberately trying to break his protective barrier, and the plague was far more complicated than it seemed.
Meanwhile, Xu Xuan had also arrived at the scene, cautiously observing the person trapped in the sand, suspecting them to be a monster. As Zi Xuan tried to impart more information, his voice was drowned out by thunder. In a moment of panic, Bai Yaoyao embraced him, only to find herself holding an unconscious Xu Xuan, who now lacked any trace of Zi Xuan's aura.
Despite this, the experience solidified Bai Yaoyao's belief that she had finally found her beloved Zi Xuan, and she silently vowed never to leave him again. Later, she brought Xu Xuan back to Leng Ning. Upon waking, Xu Xuan vaguely recalled a dream involving Bai Yaoyao crying. Leng Ning explained that Bai Yaoyao had found him unconscious and covered in sand, then brought him home, causing Xu Xuan some embarrassment at being seen in such a state.
Leng Ning probed about his earlier actions, and Xu Xuan mentioned investigating the abandoned grave for the cause of sudden deaths before they were interrupted by news of another villager falling ill. Xu Xuan immediately moved to attend to the patient, but learned that the much-needed herbs had been lost when the carriage fell off a cliff, putting Leng Ning in danger.
Xu Xuan realized the crucial cure for the plague was the rare Eight-starred Lotus Seed, which grew deep in the polluted West Lake, nearly impossible for anyone to retrieve. Bai Yaoyao, determined to help, volunteered to find it, assuring Xu Xuan she wouldn't attempt anything she wasn't confident in. Xu Xuan, still worried, questioned her understanding of the dangers. During her quest, Bai Yaoyao was injured by the lotus leaves, her blood nearly attracting a Water Dragon.
Fortunately, Hong Xin, a carp spirit, came to her aid and guided her out of the water, explaining that only Fortune's Star Fern could stop the bleeding caused by the lotus leaves. Upon her return with the precious lotus seed, Xu Xuan meticulously attended to Bai Yaoyao's injury. Overcome with joy at having "found" Zi Xuan, Bai Yaoyao was unusually affectionate, presenting Xu Xuan with peach blossoms and holding his hand tightly.
She confessed her previous unfavorable opinions of him, admitting she once thought him mean, narrow-minded, greedy, and unapproachable. Now, she declared him "the best person in this world" and insisted he would heal her. Xu Xuan was taken aback by her dramatic change in demeanor and the precious Snow Cherry Blossom she offered him, commenting on her casual consumption of such a powerful herb. Bai Yaoyao also noticed Xu Xuan's elevated body temperature, which he attributed to fatigue.
Meanwhile, Master Yuan Yi, Qi Xiao's master, also fell ill with the plague. Xu Xuan, noting the unusual severity of Master Yuan Yi's condition, agreed to administer a new remedy. He then tasked Qi Xiao with investigating the origin of the plague. Qi Xiao arrived at an abandoned morgue, where he encountered Xiao Qing, who was also investigating. As they pushed open the door, a black mist surged out. Qi Xiao instinctively pulled Xiao Qing to the ground.
Inside the dark, eerie house, Xiao Qing was unnerved by the sounds, repeatedly crying out that she was a demon and begged for mercy, much to Qi Xiao's amusement. They found several bodies, each bearing a distinct red dot on the forehead. Qi Xiao noted the sword wounds on the adult couple, suggesting a violent death, but the child's body was unharmed, save for the red dot.
They realized the unusual placement of the bodies, contrary to local customs for murder victims, indicated a suspicious cause of death. After receiving the Eight-starred Lotus Seed, Master Yuan Yi made a swift recovery, expressing profound gratitude to Bai Yaoyao. During their conversation, Master Yuan Yi reminded Bai Yaoyao of a boy named Ling Chu she had saved ten years ago, whose parents were murdered by the Nanshan Tree Demon.
He revealed that Ling Chu was now his disciple, Qi Xiao, a capable demon hunter. Bai Yaoyao noticed a red dot on Master Yuan Yi's forehead, similar to those on the plague victims. She also reflected on Ling Chu's possible connection to Zi Xuan and the pain he might have endured. As the villagers recovered from the plague, they gathered to thank Xu Xuan and Leng Ning, openly expressing their hopes for the two to marry.
Xu Xuan, visibly uncomfortable, firmly clarified that he and Leng Ning were merely fellow disciples, and asked Qing Feng to correct the villagers' assumptions, emphasizing the importance of Leng Ning's reputation. Leng Ning, left pondering Xu Xuan's strong reaction, wondered what her true place was in his heart. Bai Yaoyao, separately investigating the plague's source, went to the abandoned cemetery where the first victim was buried. She examined the body, noting the familiar red dot on its forehead.
Attempting to uncover the truth from the spirit, she discovered that the red dot was a remnant soul left by Tao Tie. Simultaneously, Qi Xiao and Xiao Qing, trapped by Tao Tie's black energy in the house they were investigating, found themselves in a perilous soul-seizing formation. Xiao Qing, despite her initial bravado, quickly realized the enemy's power was far beyond her expectations.
Back at the Apothecary House, Xu Xuan suddenly felt sharp, piercing pains throughout his body, indicating he too had contracted the plague. He quickly lost consciousness. Bai Yaoyao, returning from the abandoned graves, found Xu Xuan and saw the small red dot emerging on his forehead. Connecting this to the red dots she had seen on the corpses and Master Yuan Yi, a horrifying realization dawned on her: she was too late.
