Zhan Huang conferred with Niyun about their scheme to seize the Fate of Alkaid from Qi Xiao using Xiao Qing. Niyun recounted how, a thousand years ago, the Dragon King had personally sought mercy from the Empyrean Heaven for Taotie's transgression, pledging to remain in the Eastern Sea. Zhan Huang acknowledged that the Dragon King’s actions were to appease the Heavenly Emperor, and they had misjudged his allegiance, realizing he would not align with their cause.
Zhan Huang deemed Taotie’s current injury a strategic checkmate for the Dragon King, forcing a difficult choice between abandoning his son or facing internal strife. With the White Emperor tracking his whereabouts, Zhan Huang emphasized the urgency of securing the Fate of Alkaid. Niyun warned that Xu Xuan’s precautions prevented their lesser demons from approaching Qi Xiao, making Xiao Qing the pivotal figure in their plan.
Despite Niyun’s insistence on ruthlessness, Zhan Huang confessed a lingering debt to Xiao Qing from their 500 years of companionship, but resolved to proceed with his plan, commanding his tribe members to prepare for action. Xiao Qing approached Zhan Huang, seeking a way to make Qi Xiao break his precepts. Zhan Huang presented her with Qilin blood, explaining its colorless and tasteless nature, assuring her it would be undetectable when mixed in tea.
Xiao Qing, intending to make Qi Xiao break his vows, wondered how Zhan Huang, whom she perceived as a lesser demon, possessed such precious Qilin blood. Zhan Huang then revealed his true form as a Qilin. Xiao Qing felt betrayed by his secrecy, recalling Bai Yaoyao’s warnings about him, and acknowledged his immense power, which she believed surpassed even Xu Xuan and Qi Xiao.
Zhan Huang dismissed it, claiming it was merely a way to conceal his aura, and expressed a desire to challenge Qi Xiao. Xiao Qing, unwavering in her affection for Qi Xiao, declared him the only one she liked. Zhan Huang promised to indulge her whims and bring her joy. Meanwhile, Xu Xuan noticed Bai Yaoyao’s distraction, which she attributed to drowsiness. He pressed, asking if she was still preoccupied with the Demon Emperor.
Bai Yaoyao assured him she wouldn’t let it trouble her, having already decided to stand by him. Xu Xuan reaffirmed their unity, promising they would overcome any obstacle. Yet, Bai Yaoyao voiced her concern that smaller demons would rally behind the Demon Emperor and potentially be manipulated. Xu Xuan again reassured her, emphasizing the Demon Emperor’s limited capacity to cause widespread chaos and his unwavering support for her.
He then informed her of his imminent departure to the Eastern Sea to apprehend Taotie, asking her to oversee the Apothecary House. Bai Yaoyao questioned if his journey was solely due to Taotie. Xu Xuan explained that the Dragon King had taken responsibility for his son, and the Green Emperor had ordered Taotie’s capture.
He added that the Heavenly Emperor had allowed Taotie to recuperate at the Dragon Palace due to his severe injuries, but the matter could not be delayed. Bai Yaoyao expressed apprehension, wondering if the Heavenly Emperor feared Taotie’s escape. Xu Xuan clarified that the Dragon King, ever cautious, had proactively requested to personally escort Taotie to the Empyrean Heaven. Still wary of Taotie’s cunning, Bai Yaoyao asked to accompany him.
To her surprise, Xu Xuan readily agreed, explaining he had already entrusted the Apothecary House to Qi Xiao, unable to bear leaving her alone. Bai Yaoyao pondered if Qi Xiao would intervene, to which Xu Xuan replied that Qi Xiao, now a Buddhist monk, would surely show compassion to all beings. Bai Yaoyao then wondered if Xiao Qing, too, counted as a being in Qi Xiao’s eyes. Leng Ning sought a private conversation with Xu Xuan.
She mentioned her regular visits to her late master’s memorial and suggested Xu Xuan should also pay his respects, expressing regret to her father. She pressed Xu Xuan to reveal his true intentions, given her loss of magical prowess, making it easy for him and Bai Yaoyao to eliminate her, yet they had refrained.
Xu Xuan admitted he hadn’t decided how to handle her, but her act of sacrificing herself to the vessel had revealed a spark of kindness, which he saw as a path to redemption. Leng Ning denied her act was out of kindness, claiming she merely wished to prevent his death before hers. She confessed that her past mistakes were too numerous for forgiveness and believed there was no turning back, acknowledging how kindness could transform into evil.
She then declared that her love for him was the one unchanging truth in her life. Xu Xuan understood her sentiment, recognizing it mirrored his own unwavering love for Bai Yaoyao. Leng Ning, however, found it unbearable to confront the reality that what she could never possess had become a tormenting demon within her.
Acknowledging her lack of place in the Apothecary House, she announced her departure within days to live in solitude and atone for her sins, stating that the vast world surely held a place where he was not. Zhan Huang proclaimed it was time to announce his return to the Heavenly Emperor, having hidden for a thousand years. Niyun suggested Bai Yaoyao would serve as a perfect pawn.
Zhan Huang then contemplated the excruciating pain inflicted by the Command of Nature, questioning his actions if he were to repeatedly inflict it upon her. Ultimately, he hardened his resolve, vowing not to be swayed after millennia of planning. He declared Bai Yaoyao's punishment would be his first challenge to the Empyrean Heaven, with Xu Xuan unwittingly delivering the message, showcasing a demon's true nature to the Heavenly Emperor.
Zhan Huang admitted to being temporarily distracted by Bai Yaoyao but insisted he must be ruthless towards her. Bai Yaoyao suddenly experienced a burning pain in her shoulder, identical to an earlier incident in the Peach Blossom Grove. Xu Xuan recognized it as the mark of the demon clan, deducing that the Demon Emperor had manifested. He concluded that the Demon Emperor, having hidden for over a thousand years, would now unleash chaos and seek to control all demons.
Bai Yaoyao recalled only the intense pain and subsequent unconsciousness from the previous occurrence. Xu Xuan suspected the Demon Emperor was operating in their vicinity, given his intimate knowledge of their movements. To prevent further escalation, Xu Xuan decided they must immediately travel to the Eastern Sea to escort Taotie back to the Empyrean Heaven. At the Apothecary House, Xiao Qing questioned Qi Xiao why he hadn't prevented her visit.
He hinted at her past actions, like scaring away others or troubling Master Yong An, which she denied. Xiao Qing then boldly asked if he missed her. Qi Xiao, avoiding the question, simply asked when she would give up. Xiao Qing vowed never to surrender as long as she lived and offered him a cup of tea. Qi Xiao drank it but instantly detected something amiss, overturning the cup. He demanded to know what she had added.
Xiao Qing, surprised he noticed, admitted it was Qilin blood, colorless and tasteless, and that her intent was to make him break his precepts. Qi Xiao admonished her for being muddled. As Xiao Qing reached for his hand, his hand was scorched. Qi Xiao attempted to send a transmission talisman, but it failed to pass through a barrier. Xiao Qing confronted Zhan Huang, accusing him of viciously lying to her.
Zhan Huang, however, asserted that he had merely ensured they could never touch again, fulfilling Xiao Qing's wish to "punish" Qi Xiao. Qi Xiao, realizing the deception, demanded Zhan Huang's true identity, accusing him of tricking Xiao Qing into giving him Qilin blood for ulterior motives. Zhan Huang reiterated he was Zhan Huang, a Qilin.
Qi Xiao then deduced that the blood was from a female Qilin, branding Zhan Huang as the one who injured Fairy Xiao Xiang, and condemning his despicable tactics. Zhan Huang retorted that he would not tolerate the woman he desired having affections for another. He then revealed that any touch between Xiao Qing and Qi Xiao would inflict excruciating, potentially fatal, burning pain upon Qi Xiao. Another demon reminded Xiao Qing of Zhan Huang’s ulterior motives.
Seeing Qi Xiao suffer, Xiao Qing, though wanting to comfort him, dared not touch him. She then regretfully told Qi Xiao that they would be strangers from now on. At the Dragon Palace, Taotie questioned his father, the Dragon King, for sacrificing thousands of years of cultivation to protect him, using Mystic Water from the Lord of Western Sea to heal him and restore his deity essence, potentially making his cultivation even greater.
Taotie accused his father of hypocrisy, feigning paternal concern while sending him to his doom. The Dragon King explained that without his intervention, Taotie would have been apprehended by the Empyrean Heaven before his injuries could heal, emphasizing his responsibility as a father. He then revealed that he gave up half his cultivation because he could no longer protect Taotie, urging him to leave the Dragon Palace and never return.
Taotie bitterly recalled how, a thousand years ago during the Battle of Four Seas, he watched his father gravely injured and swore to avenge him by attacking the Empyrean Heaven. Yet, his father chose to submit, which was a source of deep pain and resentment for Taotie. The Dragon King acknowledged Taotie’s hatred but also expressed his sorrow for Taotie’s long absence.
He reiterated his duty as the Dragon King, explaining that opposing the Empyrean Heaven would lead to the Dragon tribe’s annihilation. He stated that while he couldn't fulfill Taotie’s path, he could fulfill his duty as a father. The Dragon King warned Taotie of a barrier cast by the Green Emperor’s disciple (Xu Xuan) on the sea surface, urging him to be cautious and escape.
The Dragon King declared that when they next met on the battlefield, they would no longer be father and son. Taotie bid his father farewell. The Dragon King then feigned injury, loudly commanding his guards to pursue the escaping Taotie. Xu Xuan and Bai Yaoyao, sensing the commotion, realized Taotie was fleeing. The Dragon King approached Xu Xuan, claiming his rebellious son had wounded him and asking if Xu Xuan’s barrier had captured him.
Xu Xuan noted no sign of Taotie but believed he might still be within the barrier. The Dragon King exaggerated Taotie’s brutality and his own carelessness, imploring Xu Xuan to capture Taotie to spare him the wrath of the Heavenly Emperor. Xu Xuan instructed the Dragon King to attend to his wounds while they pursued Taotie, promising to seek his help if needed.
The Dragon King agreed, assuring Xu Xuan he would accept punishment from the Heavenly Emperor for Taotie’s escape from the Eastern Sea. Xu Xuan, however, observed that the Dragon King’s wounds were not consistent with Taotie’s actions, and he had lost thousands of years of cultivation, leading Xu Xuan to suspect the Dragon King had purposely healed Taotie and orchestrated his escape. Bai Yaoyao acknowledged they were surrounded by enemies and needed to be vigilant.
At that moment, Bai Yaoyao was seized by intense pain, and Xu Xuan recognized the formidable demonic power of the Demon Emperor. Bai Yaoyao urged Xu Xuan to leave her and pursue Taotie, but Xu Xuan realized the Demon Emperor’s reemergence was a larger threat, necessitating their immediate return to the Empyrean Heaven. As Taotie arrived, Niyun questioned Zhan Huang if he had finally hardened his resolve.
Zhan Huang spoke of an internal conflict, a voice urging him not to harm Bai Yaoyao, but he reasoned that only through cruelty could he free himself from affection for her. He dismissed Niyun’s concerns about his solitude, stating his chosen path allowed no other possibilities. Zhan Huang noted Taotie’s transformation and his father’s enduring affection, evidenced by the Mystic Water recovery and the restoration of his deity bone.
Taotie confirmed that while the Dragon tribe still accepted him, they sought only peace and would remain neutral regarding the demon clan. Zhan Huang found this neutrality favorable, believing it put him halfway to his goal of seizing Kunlun, the gateway to the Empyrean Heaven, to conquer the deity world. Taotie questioned Zhan Huang’s need for his assistance if he was so confident.
Zhan Huang clarified they were allies and he had a secret mission for Taotie: to infiltrate the Apothecary House. Back at the Apothecary House, Xiao Qing anxiously awaited Bai Yaoyao’s return, troubled by Zhan Huang’s setup and her mutual restraint with Qi Xiao. Niyun appeared, claiming Zhan Huang sent her to help. Xiao Qing, distrustful, tried to dismiss her. Niyun then revealed that Bai Yaoyao and Xu Xuan were hiding Leng Ning in the Apothecary House.
Xiao Qing was enraged, demanding confirmation from Xiao Hui, a disciple. Xiao Hui tried to explain it was hidden to spare Xiao Qing further sadness, but Xiao Qing, furious, insisted on going to confront Leng Ning. Xiao Hui desperately tried to stop her, suggesting she wait for Bai Yaoyao, but Xiao Qing stormed off towards the Apothecary House, while Xiao Hui worriedly speculated about the consequences of her actions.
Unbeknownst to Xiao Qing, Qi Xiao was currently holding vigil at the Apothecary House. Another disciple informed Qi Xiao that Senior Xu had left, but they were fortunate to have Qi Xiao there. They mentioned Leng Ning had been quiet, mostly keeping to her room, occasionally venturing out on fine days. Qi Xiao, sensing a demon aura, cautioned Qing Feng to retreat, anticipating Xiao Qing's arrival.
Xu Xuan brought Bai Yaoyao to Mount Jiuxi and informed the Green Emperor of the Demon Emperor's reappearance. The Green Emperor explained that the demon clan’s lineage was rooted in bloodline, and the Demon Emperor's Command of Nature allowed him to control all demons, rallying them to his call and compelling their obedience. He warned that the Demon Emperor possessed the power to control the life and death of his followers. Xu Xuan asked if there was a remedy.
The Green Emperor responded that ancient demon clans harbored many secrets, which was why the Heavenly Emperor feared the Demon Emperor. Xu Xuan then questioned if his wife would be perpetually manipulated. The Green Emperor stated that to break free, the mark on her shoulder had to be removed. He described the arduous process: enduring forty-nine strikes of the Lotus Fire, which corrodes bones and reforges marrow.
If she could withstand this agony, she would be severed from the demon clan and immune to the Demon Emperor’s control. Xu Xuan declared that if the Demon Emperor instigated a rebellion, his wife must not be exploited. Bai Yaoyao then inquired about the difficulty of this method. The Green Emperor explained that although the Lotus Fire possessed the gentle attributes of wood, it would intensely burn through every artery and vein in her body.
