As Qi Xiao battled Tao Tie, he was unfortunately struck by the demon's toxic smoke. Xu Xuan and Bai Yaoyao arrived, joining forces against Tao Tie, who declared he had set up a formation and would not continue fighting. Qi Xiao, in turn, vowed not to let Tao Tie off easily. Bai Yaoyao confronted Tao Tie, accusing him of possessing Master Yuan Yi and causing chaos, now intending to harm Qi Xiao.

Tao Tie arrogantly stated that Master Yuan Yi had overestimated himself and was easily used, calling both Master Yuan Yi and Qi Xiao stupid. Tao Tie then threatened Xu Xuan for repeatedly spoiling his plans, promising him suffering in the future. Xu Xuan, in the meantime, had asked Qi Xiao about Master Yuan Yi's kasaya, which was said to prevail over devils. Qi Xiao directed him to the left, then corrected to the right cupboard in the Elixir Chamber.

After Tao Tie's retreat, Xu Xuan offered to prepare herbs from the Villa to heal Qi Xiao's injured eyes. Qi Xiao, realizing he had been misled, apologized to Bai Yaoyao for mistaking her for his master's murderer, admitting he was tricked by Tao Tie's evil plan. Bai Yaoyao assured him it was alright, acknowledging Tao Tie's cunning nature after 1000 years in hiding.

Xu Xuan playfully remarked that it was more difficult to make Qi Xiao understand the truth than to find Tao Tie. The injured Tao Tie later met with Zhan Huang. Zhan Huang instructed Tao Tie to stabilize his primordial spirit, promising to teach him how to restore his corporeal form afterward.

Tao Tie, however, questioned Zhan Huang's courage, noting his reluctance to confront Xu Xuan (referred to as Zi Xuan in the subtitles here, likely referencing his past identity), who had lost his primordial spirits. Zhan Huang stated he was well-prepared for his return. Tao Tie then demanded Zhan Huang join him in taking Xu Xuan's life, but Zhan Huang refused, clarifying that he never promised to confront Xu Xuan "with" Tao Tie, implying he was unwilling.

Their alliance quickly deteriorated, with accusations of betrayal and double-dealing from both sides. Ni Yun, a subordinate, described Tao Tie as short-tempered and impulsive, making it hard for him to achieve great causes. Zhan Huang concurred, viewing Tao Tie as a crucial pawn in his already-set game, one they couldn't afford to lose. Three years earlier, Prince Zhao Yu had saved a carp from a fisherman's net, which was the carp demon Hong Xin.

He gently advised the carp to be careful and avoid getting caught again. Now, Zhao Yu posted notices across the land, expressing deep gratitude and searching for his saviour. Hong Xin, who secretly loved the Prince, was distressed because her face had been disfigured and she didn't want him to see her in such a state. Xiao Qing noticed Hong Xin's sadness and suggested that being scary could be beneficial for a demon.

Hong Xin, however, insisted on restoring her face and not scaring people. Xiao Qing, calling herself the Mountain Queen, then informed Hong Xin that she had invited the Prince to meet his saviour in the forest, without revealing Hong Xin's identity. When Zhao Yu arrived, he encountered Leng Ning, who was collecting herbs, and mistook her for his saviour, expressing his heartfelt gratitude. Leng Ning denied saving him and tried to leave.

Just then, Xiao Qing appeared with Hong Xin, revealing that Hong Xin was the true saviour. Zhao Yu, after apologizing to Leng Ning, initially thanked Hong Xin politely. However, upon seeing Hong Xin's disfigured face, he recoiled in fear, exclaiming at her ugliness. Hong Xin was deeply hurt, devastated that her magical prowess was too weak to heal her face. Heartbroken by Zhao Yu's reaction, Hong Xin was desperate to restore her appearance.

She recalled Xu Xuan mentioning that Duan Yang School's Poison Scroll could rapidly heal festering faces. Driven by this hope, she secretly entered the Elixir Chamber, where Leng Ning discovered her. Hong Xin claimed she was not stealing but looking for something, emphasizing that Xu Xuan had spoken of the Poison Scroll's quick healing properties and her willingness to endure pain for the Prince.

Leng Ning, however, insisted on upholding the Apothecary House rules, stating that there would be no appeasement for anyone who broke them, and ordered Hong Xin to leave after a few days. Bai Yaoyao pleaded with Leng Ning for mercy, highlighting Hong Xin's desperation and lack of malicious intent.

Later, Bai Yaoyao brought the matter to Xu Xuan, who explained the severe dangers of the Poison Scroll: it required constant contact with poisonous substances and had only a fifty-fifty success rate, with even successful treatments being arduous and unnatural. Bai Yaoyao then proposed combining the methods of Duan Yang School and Ming Jue School to find a compromise to heal Hong Xin's face, a suggestion Xu Xuan surprisingly agreed with, noting they shared the same thoughts.

Amidst these events, Xu Xuan felt his heartbeat was inconsistent again and was determined to cure himself. Meanwhile, with his eyes temporarily blinded, Qi Xiao found a new clarity, reflecting on how he had been misguided by appearances and failed to recognize Tao Tie's possession of his master. He then recognized a familiar scent on Bai Yaoyao, which brought back a childhood memory.

He recalled being bullied and injured, with eyes hurt and unable to open, when a kind "sister" rescued him, comforted him, and arranged for Master Yuan Yi to take him in. Young Qi Xiao had remembered her distinctive, good scent. Realizing that Bai Yaoyao was that "sister," Qi Xiao felt remorse for having previously misunderstood her. Bai Yaoyao acknowledged it was a chance encounter and she had simply asked Master Yuan Yi to care for him.

Xu Xuan, however, sarcastically remarked on Bai Yaoyao entrusting such a "problematic person" to Master Yuan Yi. Qi Xiao retorted, questioning why Xu Xuan lacked the kindness and gentleness of his own master, Lord Leng. Xu Xuan defended his "harsh and stingy" demeanor, explaining that when he took over the Apothecary House, it was thousands of taels in debt from helping people, and he had to be strict to keep it afloat.

Qi Xiao further criticized Xu Xuan for refusing him the Cicada Flower earlier, which prolonged Bai Yaoyao's injury. After Bai Yaoyao credited Xu Xuan for helping Qi Xiao, Xu Xuan light-heartedly demanded medical fees, to which Qi Xiao admitted he had no money. Bai Yaoyao, amused by their squabble, laughed, prompting Xu Xuan to complain about them finding his penniless situation funny. Xiao Qing, determined to find Qi Xiao, ventured into Jinshan Temple, even challenging the Buddha's light.

She transformed into Master Yuan Yi's likeness, hoping to cheer up the grieving Qi Xiao. However, Qi Xiao was furious, rebuking the demon for disrespecting his master's form and demanding she revert. Xiao Qing, revealing her true self, explained her intention was to make him happy, despite his past scolding. Qi Xiao, ungrateful, vehemently told her to leave, threatening to capture and sacrifice her to his master if she refused.

Angered, Xiao Qing declared she would never speak to him again and sulked away. Qi Xiao followed, teasing her about being a mute and her unpleasant voice. Xiao Qing retorted that she had indeed spoken, saying a full sentence. Qi Xiao then asked why she remained if she wasn't mute. Xiao Qing revealed her concern about being mocked by the lesser demons if she returned, despite being the Mountain Queen with a thousand years of cultivation.

She confessed that after a thousand years in the mortal world without family or a master, she had gathered the demons not for authority but for the companionship, preferring to be happily together rather than alone. Qi Xiao, recalling his own feelings for his master, acknowledged her struggle and realized she understood his own sentiments. He then urged her to return to her demons, who must be worried.

Xiao Qing, surprised by his understanding, admitted she had "lost" to him again, and the two shared a moment of silent, knowing understanding. Hong Xin remained consumed by jealousy, recalling how Zhao Yu had looked at Leng Ning. She decided to abandon her disfigured face to win the Prince's affection. She led Leng Ning to a secluded spot, where she magically swapped their faces.

The next day, Leng Ning appeared at the Apothecary House bearing Hong Xin's scars, distraught and screaming that it wasn't her face, blaming Xiao Qing for bringing the demon. Xiao Qing argued that it was Xu Xuan who had insisted. Leng Ning revealed that Hong Xin had chosen her face because someone, whom Hong Xin loved, admired it. Xiao Qing quickly realized Hong Xin was infatuated with Prince Zhao Yu and was attempting to win his heart.

Bai Yaoyao vowed to retrieve Leng Ning's face. Hong Xin, with Leng Ning's face, managed to secure an audience with Prince Zhao Yu, who was smitten with her beauty. When she asked if he would still love her without her beauty, he swore an oath of unwavering devotion. Hong Xin, however, stalled his proposal, claiming the Apothecary House was experiencing a period of bad luck and their marriage should be postponed.

Bai Yaoyao attempted to gather information at Prince Zhao Yu's palace but encountered the Door Guardians and sustained minor injuries. Xu Xuan's brother-in-law, a guard at the palace, helped Xu Xuan by adding "Spirit Expelling Powder" to the Prince's drink, anticipating that this would lead to an invitation for Xu Xuan to treat the Prince. Learning of Bai Yaoyao's injury, Xu Xuan became visibly anxious and intended to confront the Door Guardians.

However, Bai Yaoyao stopped him, explaining that as a mortal, he wouldn't be able to confront the real Door Guardians, Shen Shu and Yu Lu, who were old acquaintances of Zi Xuan. Burning their portraits now would cause problems for Xu Xuan in the future when he ascended to deity status. Xu Xuan relented, then retrieved medicine for Bai Yaoyao, assuring her she would feel better.

As Bai Yaoyao took the medicine, she gazed at Xu Xuan, a look of profound affection, reminiscent of her past feelings for Zi Xuan, in her eyes. A disciple informed Xu Xuan that Leng Ning was emotionally unstable, prompting him to visit her. He tried to coax her to open the door, reminding her of their childhood bond. Leng Ning, ashamed of her disfigured face, refused to see him, fearing her "ferocious" appearance.

Xu Xuan, holding a flower ball they used to play with, comforted her, assuring her that regardless of her looks, she would always be his "most precious Sister Leng Ning," and that her appearance was trivial compared to her kindness. Leng Ning, however, felt like a monster in others' eyes and confessed she now understood Hong Xin's desperation, vowing to endure any pain for a cure from Duan Yang School's Poison Scroll.

Xu Xuan dissuaded her from such extreme measures, explaining that he, as a leader caught between the long-standing conflict of the two schools, understood both perspectives and aimed to reconcile them. He promised Leng Ning that he would never let anyone bully her and would find a way to retrieve her face, hinting that his plan, which involved treating the prince, was already set.

Meanwhile, Bai Yaoyao, convinced it was too dangerous for Xu Xuan to enter Prince Zhao Yu's palace alone, resolved to accompany him, despite Xiao Qing's concerns about the Door Guardians. Xiao Qing then devised a plan: she ordered her subordinate, Xiao Hui, to distract the Door Guardians. Xiao Hui reluctantly agreed, drawing out the guardians by burning their portraits and taunting them as the "Mighty Rabbit," leading them away in pursuit.

With the guardians distracted, Bai Yaoyao and Xu Xuan successfully entered the palace. Inside, Hong Xin, who was with the unconscious Prince, acknowledged Xu Xuan's cleverness in incapacitating the Prince. Xu Xuan, confronting her, tried to explain that her happiness was selfish and that the Prince truly loved Leng Ning, not her adopted face. Hong Xin, however, defiantly declared she would never return the face, believing it was the only way to stay by the Prince's side and find happiness. To prevent Bai Yaoyao from interfering, Hong Xin secretly added realgar to the incense burner.
