The Psychologist Episode 34 Recap
> The Psychologist Recap
He Dun, following a lead, located Fu Tang. Sitting next to her, He Dun greeted her. Fu Tang, listening to music, shared an earbud with He Dun, inviting her to listen to the "sounds of rising tide" together. He Dun confirmed, "Oh, yes. It actually is the sound of the rising tide." They then introduced themselves, "My name is He Dun," and "Hello, my name is Fu Tang."
Meanwhile, Ye's father reviewed documents with Wen Liang, advising her to "be safe than sorry" and "take your time to read it" to avoid errors. Wen Liang expressed her surprise, having believed that, in the approval process for this document, she would be "the last one to approve it." Ye's father dismissed this, stating that the "so-called process is nothing more than a formality" and that the committee members had already approved it.
He then reminded her that "the final decision rests with you." He then shifted the conversation, asking Wen Liang about her time living in the UK, contrasting it with his dislike for the "unruly" squirrels in American courtyards. Wen Liang confirmed she lived there for her studies but offered no comment on the squirrels.
Ye's father continued to make veiled remarks about leadership, then turned his attention to He Dun, observing that Wen Liang had "been in contact with He Dun for quite a while." He subtly hinted at the need to address the "hangnail" issue promptly, suggesting that some discomfort would persist "until you finally get rid of it." Back with Fu Tang, she offered He Dun candy, then mischievously pulled her into a room, whispering, "Don't let them find us. Let's go."
A puzzled He Dun asked, "Who'll find us?" Fu Tang revealed her intention, saying, "It's more interesting this way." Inside, surrounded by bottles, He Dun remarked, "So you put liquor in all these soft drink bottles?" Fu Tang offered, "Want to try every one of them?" but He Dun declined, preferring to "take my time to drink it." As they drank plum sake, Fu Tang asked about He Dun's arrival.
He Dun shared that she "was with my boyfriend before I came here" and described him as "narcissistic sometimes" but "a very nice guy," "very hot," and alternately "so annoying" and "so adorable." When Fu Tang asked if he was her first boyfriend, He Dun was surprised, then eagerly asked Fu Tang to share her own "first boyfriend" story. Fu Tang described her first love as "shy and introverted."
A flashback showed their first meeting: while organizing books, Ji Mingcong, whom Fu Tang's first love turned out to be, corrected her stacking order and introduced himself, stating he "never shake hands with people" even with her gloves on, but Fu Tang insisted on trying. Back in the present, Fu Tang recounted, "That was how we met. We fell in love at first sight." He Dun asked if he pursued her. Fu Tang replied, "No. He did nothing.
I was so angry that I tried every way to woo him." She added, "He was shy and introverted indeed. Oh, worse than that. I also took the initiative to hold his hand for the first time." He Dun remarked, "Since he loved you, he should have showed his love boldly!" to which Fu Tang agreed, "One should always show their love boldly." Fu Tang then suggested, "Let's go out to get some fresh air."
He Dun's parents walked on the beach. Her mother mentioned that He Dun was worried about her professor's scandal and would likely be "down for quite some days." Her father suggested she spend time with He Dun, to which her mother replied that He Dun "doesn't need my company anymore. She has her boyfriend to keep her company." Her father then invited her, "Now since you have more time, you can keep me company," and took her hand.
Her mother expressed comfort, saying, "I feel at ease holding your hands," but then soberly stated, "I know what you are thinking. But we have separated for a long time. I need some time to think about it." She added that she also "need to think about Dun." Her father responded, "I understand." Later that night, on a rooftop, He Dun, feeling increasingly tipsy, exclaimed, "I guess I'm drunk."
Fu Tang, asking for her boyfriend's number, called Qian Kaiyi, informing him, "Your girlfriend is drunk." He Dun, overhearing, loudly declared, "My boyfriend is Qian Kaiyi!" After getting the location, Fu Tang told He Dun, "Your boyfriend will come soon. So I will leave you alone," and bid farewell. Qian Kaiyi arrived to find He Dun, mistaking a telegraph pole for him, ranting, "Qian Kaiyi. Why did you become a thin telegraph pole?
And why would you wear so many accessories? They're ugly and vulgar. You can get as much as you want?" She continued to hurl insults like "ugly shit" and "idiot" at the pole. Qian Kaiyi, amused and concerned, got her to sit down. Still disoriented, He Dun, adopting a professional tone, told him to "register on my visitor's list first. Tell me your problem and what you wanna achieve through the counseling. I can help you solve your problem."
Qian Kaiyi, playing along, complained, "My girlfriend won't acknowledge me as her boyfriend. Can you solve my problem?" He Dun gravely declared, "Then your girlfriend is the one to blame. But it's okay. Bro, lad. I can solve your problem," and then impulsively kissed him. Recovering slightly, He Dun declared, "Then I'll give you some assignment to do. You have to write down what I say! Understand?" Qian Kaiyi agreed. He Dun instructed, "The first thing is. . .
You are a four-cornered bean. Understand?" Qian Kaiyi repeated, "A four-cornered bean." He Dun affirmed, "Yes, four-cornered bean. Four-cornered bean is you. You are a four-cornered bean. Write it down. Four-cornered bean." Qian Kaiyi complied, "Okay, I'm a four-cornered bean. Four-cornered bean." He Dun continued, "The second thing is. . . That jar of origami stars was for you. I didn't want to give it to Kang Ziyuan. I put it, I put it under my desk.
Remember to get it." Qian Kaiyi promised, "I will definitely go get it." Finally, He Dun confessed sincerely, "And also I really, I really really, I really really really, I really like you." Qian Kaiyi, touched, responded, "I know. I know." As He Dun started to cry and told him not to laugh, he reassured her. Overwhelmed by emotion and old memories, they shared a passionate kiss. The next morning, He Dun woke up confused.
Lili gently reminded her of the previous night, asking if she remembered "how you came back here last night" and what "four-cornered bean" meant, a term He Dun used in her drunken state which Lili found "eye-opening." Lili then confronted He Dun about her secret relationship, saying she knew "You guys already did this and did that. You're still trying to hide it from me? Tell me the truth!"
He Dun, apologizing, explained, "I didn't want to hide it from you. I wanted to tell you after I handled what had happened these few days." She then officially announced to her "best friend, Miss Tang Lili," that "Qian Kaiyi and I are dating. I'm not single anymore."
Lili, though having to "force you to tell me," expressed immense happiness, noting that Qian Kaiyi "finally let you put your guard down," comparing He Dun's emotional barriers to "a thick and iron guard." He Dun, finding Lili's reaction "sappy" and "sensational," then received Lili's own exciting news: "I'm also dating someone." He Dun eagerly asked, "Who is it?" Lili revealed it was "Mr. Jin? That policeman who received us that night?" He Dun exclaimed, "I knew it!
As your BFF, I'm also very happy for you. Tang Lili has grown up, too. I like that policeman." Lili, grateful for He Dun's support, promised to "keep my eyes open when it comes to men" after her past experiences. He Dun reciprocated, thanking Lili for being her anchor through challenging times. Lili then expressed a lingering regret about "the little episode with Ye Jiahui," though she asserted, "I've already let go."
He Dun offered a profound observation, believing that "in everyone's heart there is this sick child. But they don't know how to live with this child in peace." She confessed, "I could feel that he had a lot of secrets in his heart," but admitted to "unconsciously I always dulled my suspicion on him." Reflecting, He Dun said, "maybe deep down in my heart I didn't want to explore his state of mind with my psychology expertise.
I wanted to help him as a friend." However, she lamented, "unfortunately, as his friend I didn't manage to let his guard down. So I can see why he would do that." Lili, deeply moved, praised He Dun, saying, "He, you're like an angel, you know that? I really like you so much!" and humorously added, "I think I'm Qian Kaiyi at this moment. Ewww."
He Dun began her "Night Talk to Your Heart" broadcast from her new "Studio of Happy Talk." Before going live, her colleagues and Qian Kaiyi encouraged her to "take it easy" and "just relax as usual," assuring her that everything was handled. Qian Kaiyi introduced them as "your emotion listener" and "your happiness communicator." He noted the new venue, their own studio, as a significant development.
He Dun then shared her perspective on her role, stating that while being a guest host was an honor, the growing influence of the show meant her words "would represent some people's stand," creating pressure. She emphasized her intention to "just want to speak and give opinions as an individual and to deliver a good show today."
They then addressed a listener's question about the specific job of a psychological counselor, clarifying that it involves more than casual chatting; it requires intense observation of a client's "every move face to face," "state when they are talking," and "micro expressions." She asserted that the work "isn't as simple as we might imagine," and that the counseling room is a space for "self-expression and self-cognition," where "whatever they say means something for us the counsellors."
The conversation then turned to Professor Ji Mingcong's scandal. Qian Kaiyi directly asked if her statements were "without any personal bias." He Dun admitted, "Everybody knows that I'm a student of Professor Ji Mingcong. I've been very confident that he's innocent since the bustle of news of his sexually assault. So I had been trying to find the answer holding a pre-set attitude." Qian Kaiyi clarified, "So from the very beginning you didn't treat it with a neutral stand.
Can I understand it this way?" He Dun confirmed, "That's right. I trusted my teacher very much. Precisely because of my trust that I had been trying my best to investigate and to seek truth. And finally I did find the answer I wanted." When asked if this was a response to online doubts, He Dun affirmed she accepted personal criticism but pleaded, "I don't want to see people resent the profession of a psychological counselor."
She clarified that her actions were as "an ordinary person like everyone else," and that her views "doesn't represent the position of the group of psychological counselors." Shortly after, a listener called in, directly questioning He Dun. The caller stated, "Miss He. You are a student of Ji Mingcong. But we the audience are not his relatives or acquittances. We don't know what he's like."
He Dun attempted to clarify, but the caller continued to criticize her, arguing that as a host, her defense of Professor Ji "before the truth comes out" was "inappropriate." The caller even went so far as to accuse, "With a sleazy professor like him, his student is also sleazy." Qian Kaiyi swiftly intervened, thanking the caller but pivoting to a broader point about the importance of understanding events "from a subjective point of view instead of following the herd."
He acknowledged the caller's "point" about public figures' words being "magnified and attracts the society's attention" and carrying power. He concluded by cautioning that if public "sympathy. . . is consumed," it could lead to "hostile emotions towards the vulnerable," potentially causing people to "won't believe them anymore" if a true victim comes forward, emphasizing the need to "take responsibility for our own words." Meanwhile, news reports covered Professor Ji Mingcong's public apology.
The former President of Hai City's Psychological Society admitted to having "made a huge mistake in his professional field" and "violated the code of professional ethics to develop an improper relationship with one of his visitors." In an interview, Professor Ji clarified that "There is no improper relationship between me and Yao Kexin. But the letter at the hearing was not fabricated either."
He acknowledged, "When things have come to this point, I can only say that I made a big mistake. I seriously violated my professional ethics and ethics in general," and offered a "deep apology for the negative impact my doings have on other parties involved and the academic circle." He Dun's mother once again attended a session with Wen Liang.
When asked if she had been "worried recently," He Dun's mother revealed, "My ex-husband suddenly came to me the other day," proposing reconciliation. She felt torn, acknowledging his "very sincere" efforts and observed "he has changed a lot," no longer messy when eating or rushing ahead during walks. Yet, she confided, "I still resent him when I look at him. He hurt me and my daughter greatly. I don't think my wounds can be healed easily."
She recounted his past suggestion to "send her to one of your relatives and let them raise her," an idea she vehemently rejected, asserting, "Dun is my child and she will stay with me." Wen Liang astutely observed that while the mother's "mood was calm when you were reminiscing about the past," she became "very emotional" when discussing her daughter's relationship with him.
Wen Liang concluded, "what you are really worried about is not whether you can accept getting back together with him. You're worried if your daughter can accept him to be part of her life as her father again." Wen Liang then inquired about the first time He Dun's mother fainted. She recalled receiving a call from an unknown number which He Dun answered. The caller briefly said "hello" before asking, "Is it Xiping?"
(He Dun's father's name), causing her mother to collapse. The following day, a somber mood hung over Haifeng Radio International as Qian Kaiyi's show had lower viewership than Wang Zhuo's. A colleague expressed their disappointment, asking, "Did you all see the result?" Qian Kaiyi, however, remained positive, reassuring his team, "It's okay. It's just one episode. It's not like the sky is falling."
Ye Jiahui was released and returned to his apartment, where he encountered Lili and He Dun about to leave. Lili pointedly ignored him. He Dun, however, stopped and directly confronted him, asking, "Ye Jiahui. You have nothing that you want to tell us? Maybe you don't. But I do. Don't you think you owe us some explanation? Who are you really?" After a prolonged silence, Ye Jiahui finally uttered, "I'm moving away."
He Dun then returned the music box he had given her. As he didn't take it, the music box fell to the ground and shattered. Qian Kaiyi arrived at the flower house. He Dun called him on the phone, telling him, "Qian Kaiyi. That Ye Jiahui was back." Qian Kaiyi, concerned, asked, "He went back? He didn't go to see you, right? Did he do anything to you?" He Dun reassured him, "No. He said he was going to move." She then told Qian Kaiyi that she would go to him, adding that there was "someone I need to see."
