The Psychologist Episode 13 Recap
> The Psychologist Recap
Jiang Jing arrived at He Dun's studio, expressing that she felt like a marionette with no freedom. He Dun questioned Jiang Jing about her current vomiting habits. Jiang Jing confessed that whenever she felt anxious, tense, uneasy, or angry, she would resort to overeating to alleviate stress. However, after consuming food, she would fall into a state of feeling out of control and miserable, leading her to vomit as a compensatory action to relieve the immediate pressure.
Jiang Jing reflected that she saw herself being humiliated in the past, and felt pitiful, but also cute in other moments. The most painful aspect for her was the future, as her mother’s constant criticism had left her without confidence. He Dun explained that every person is an independent individual, including Jiang Jing and her mother; they do not belong to each other.
She suggested that Jiang Jing’s mother’s public criticism might be an intense form of emotional expression or even a performance, perhaps stemming from her desire for fresh experiences and satisfaction due to her stable social standing. Her mother might even believe she was protecting Jiang Jing by doing so, for example, from early romantic relationships. Jiang Jing acknowledged that she could understand her mother’s intentions but could not accept her methods, feeling her life was beyond hope.
He Dun encouraged Jiang Jing, assuring her that everything she had done in the past was for her own betterment, and expressed confidence in her recovery, which would empower her for the future. He Dun then outlined a plan, including a results analysis form for Jiang Jing to complete, which would help her understand the positive and negative, direct and delayed consequences of her overeating.
She also suggested exploring Jiang Jing’s fear of overreliance on others, which seemed linked to her distant memories of her father, whom her mother described as irresponsible. Despite this, Jiang Jing recalled a fond memory of her father lifting her high, making her feel like a bird. He Dun proposed speaking with Jiang Jing’s mother, to which Jiang Jing agreed, believing her mother would not refuse.
He Dun reassured Jiang Jing, expressing confidence that she could help her through cognitive behavioral and interpersonal communication therapy, and reminded her to cherish the things she loved. Meanwhile, Ye Jiahui, posing as Mr. Jia, met with Jiang Jing’s mother. Jiang Jing’s mother proudly recounted Jiang Jing’s childhood, detailing her strict piano training from the age of five, involving at least ten hours of practice daily, even during holidays.
She emotionally recalled Jiang Jing’s calloused fingers and how, at age ten, during a Debussy prelude, the piano keys became smeared with blood from her strenuous practice. Mr. Jia praised Jiang Jing’s mother for her dedication, comparing her role to an experienced "tea-picker" who nurtures a prized Pu’er tea through essential processes, ensuring its exceptional quality. Jiang Jing's mother promised to arrange more intensive training for Jiang Jing before the New Year’s concert at the Oriental Theatre.
Mr. Jia then outlined the next steps: an audition, followed by a formal invitation from the Oriental Theatre for those who passed. He also subtly advised that a parent knows their child best and should not be swayed by outside opinions. At the radio station, Qian Kaiyi learned from a colleague that a mysterious sponsor had invested 500,000 RMB for data research to upgrade the "Time Interview" program.
Qian Kaiyi, whose show "Time Interview" was taken from him, made a sarcastic remark about the program and left the meeting. Later, during a team meeting to discuss live broadcast topics, a colleague suggested using He Dun’s psychological counseling cases as prototypes. Qian Kaiyi adamantly refused, emphasizing that as a professional therapist, He Dun could not disclose client privacy, calling it a breach of her professional ethics and "bottom line."
Another colleague accused Qian Kaiyi of being overly protective of He Dun and using them as "stepping stones" for his personal revenge. Angered, Qian Kaiyi admitted that his sole purpose for doing everything he did was to reclaim "Time Interview." The meeting ended abruptly. Qian Kaiyi skipped work and went to his neighbor grandma’s house for a meal, confiding in her about the workplace conflict. He then asked her if she could find plastic tubes for folding stars.
The grandma, who owned a small shop, readily agreed, saying she had already ordered them. She added a condition: he must give the finished stars to "that girl." Qian Kaiyi confessed it was for an apology because he had accidentally broken her jar of plastic stars when they were children, to which the grandma affectionately concluded they were "childhood sweethearts." Qian Kaiyi expressed his despondency over his radio show's limited audience.
The grandma, in turn, offered comforting words, reminding him that "everyone and everything has its purpose." Unbeknownst to Qian Kaiyi, his conversations at work and with his neighbor grandma were being monitored by Ye Jiahui. Meanwhile, Professor Ji's old friend visited him, bringing a book titled "The Mystery of the Mind." The friend recounted meeting Ye Niantang on his flight home, expressing concern about Ye Niantang’s increasingly radical experimental methods, fearing they could harm the entire industry.
He recalled Ye Niantang's development of the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM), acknowledging his scientific acumen but lack of business experience. A flashback showed Ye Niantang addressing investors, explaining that protecting the interests of the majority might mean some would not receive product authorization, a move seen by some as a strategic retreat to advance. Later that evening, He Dun and Tang Lili were enjoying hotpot when He Dun realized they were out of beverages.
Lili revealed she had invited someone else who would bring drinks, and shortly after, Ye Jiahui arrived with Burgundy wine and Yougan Lemon Tea. Lili lightheartedly remarked that Qian Kaiyi was a "coward" and incapable of malicious acts, while Ye Jiahui, with a subtle undertone, cautioned that one cannot "judge a man's heart from his face" and that "it doesn't hurt to be cautious." He Dun praised the Burgundy wine, noting its delicate fruity and smoky aroma.
Separately, Qian Kaiyi drove Yuan home. Yuan presented him with their high school graduation photo. Qian Kaiyi immediately spotted He Dun, remarking on her charm even without makeup, and also complimented his own dashing appearance in the photo. Upon returning home, Qian Kaiyi smiled as he gazed at He Dun’s photo and then began diligently learning to fold stars from a video, using the materials his grandma had provided.
Back at He Dun's apartment, as both she and Lili became heavily intoxicated from the wine Ye Jiahui brought, Ye Jiahui subtly questioned He Dun about case files pertaining to bipolar disorder. He Dun, in her inebriated state, mumbled that if the files weren't in her counseling room, they might have been "mailed home" to her mother’s place. After He Dun and Lili had passed out, Ye Jiahui discreetly searched He Dun’s apartment for the files but found nothing.
The next morning, Ye Jiahui went to He Dun’s mother’s house, claiming it was time for her second acupuncture and physiotherapy session for her feet. Believing he was He Dun's friend, her mother let him in without suspicion. He also brought fruit as a gift.
