Qi Xiao, wounded and poisoned, fled a brawl and collapsed at the entrance of the Apothecary House. Xu Xuan, the Lord of the Apothecary House, was returning and initially hesitated to intervene when his attendant pointed out the injured man. However, upon realizing the man had entered Apothecary House territory, Xu Xuan declared him under their protection and ordered his men to bring him inside. He also commanded them to surround the group chasing Qi Xiao.
The leader of the chasing group, Xiao Qing, a demon who often claimed the title of Mountain Queen, confronted Xu Xuan, stating she had injured Qi Xiao and warning Xu Xuan not to interfere. Xu Xuan remained firm, asserting Qi Xiao now belonged to the Apothecary House and advising Xiao Qing to leave. Despite her bluster about her power, her subordinate wisely cautioned her against fighting Xu Xuan, given his reputation and the strength of the Apothecary House.
Xiao Qing eventually decided to retreat, but not before vowing to cause trouble for them later that night. Qi Xiao was taken into the Apothecary House, but Xu Xuan was preoccupied in the Elixir Chamber with new herbs. Leng Ning, a young lady of the Apothecary House who often consulted medical texts, attempted to treat Qi Xiao. However, her efforts only worsened his condition, causing him to laugh uncontrollably, and he accused her of trying to kill him.
Xu Xuan was informed of the situation and, rather than rushing to Qi Xiao’s aid, stated it was "too early" for him to visit. When Xu Xuan finally did confront Qi Xiao, he adopted a cold and arrogant demeanor, mocking Qi Xiao's wild behavior and accusing him of ignorance. This deliberate provocation infuriated Qi Xiao, who vomited black blood, effectively expelling the poison.
Xu Xuan explained to Leng Ning that the poison was concentrated in Qi Xiao's chest and could only be expelled when his anger reached his heart, forcing the blood out. He then ordered Qing Feng to search Qi Xiao for any valuables to cover the cost of his treatment. Later that night, Xiao Qing stealthily infiltrated the Apothecary House, but she was trapped in an invisible barrier.
She found the place eerie and considered abandoning her mission, but her pride wouldn't allow her to return empty-handed to her subordinate demons. She resolved to steal some herbs as "compensation" and to demonstrate her prowess. After collecting numerous valuable herbs, she returned to her cave, boasting to her followers about how easily she had infiltrated the Apothecary House. However, to her dismay, the precious herbs she had stolen magically transformed into a pile of ordinary grass.
As everyone watched in confusion, the grass then coalesced into a beautiful painting of a woman. Enraged by the woman's beauty, Xiao Qing attempted to deface the image, but the woman, Bai Yaoyao, instantly materialized before them. Bai Yaoyao explained that she had come to investigate rumors of someone impersonating her master, the Sacred Lady of Mount Li, and causing chaos in the mortal world.
Xiao Qing, surprised, introduced herself as a "thousand-year-cultivated earth deity" and asked Bai Yaoyao's master's identity. Upon learning Bai Yaoyao served the Sacred Lady of Mount Li, Xiao Qing, still trying to maintain her authority, attempted to recruit Bai Yaoyao, promising her a life of luxury and even the possibility of Heavenly Peaches. Intrigued by the mention of Heavenly Peaches, Bai Yaoyao agreed to a fight.
Bai Yaoyao effortlessly defeated Xiao Qing, who quickly conceded and proposed they reschedule their battle for another day, claiming she had just fought 300 rounds at the Apothecary House. Bai Yaoyao, naive and earnest, expressed regret that she wouldn't get a Heavenly Peach soon, a reaction that made Xiao Qing find her unexpectedly "quite cute." Suddenly, Qi Xiao's condition at the Apothecary House appeared to worsen dramatically.
Xu Xuan, after seemingly failing to cure him, ordered Qing Feng to secretly bury Qi Xiao. Xiao Qing, having seen Apothecary House servants carrying what she believed was Qi Xiao's corpse, decided to intercept them, intending to burn his body as an act of revenge. However, it was a ruse; Qi Xiao had faked his death to lure Xiao Qing out. He sprang to life, rebuking her for her foolishness and attacking her.
As Qi Xiao was about to deliver a fatal blow, Xu Xuan, who had been observing the entire time, intervened. He urged Qi Xiao to show mercy, arguing that killing a demon was still killing, and that true righteousness lay in eradicating evil itself, not just demons. Qi Xiao clarified he merely intended to teach Xiao Qing a lesson for breaking into the Apothecary House and did not mean to kill her.
He also expressed his disappointment in Xu Xuan for tricking his own people. Unmoved, Xu Xuan remained unapologetic about his methods. Back in her cave, Xiao Qing spat blood, realizing the immense power of Qi Xiao, whose single strike had severely damaged her spiritual marble. Desperate for healing, she instructed her subordinate, Xiao Hui, to capture a human. Just then, Bai Yaoyao reappeared. She stopped Xiao Qing's demons and gently admonished Xiao Qing for her dangerous healing methods.
Bai Yaoyao also exposed Xiao Qing's earlier lie about possessing Heavenly Peaches. After healing Xiao Qing, Bai Yaoyao finally revealed her true identity as Bai Yaoyao, a disciple of the Sacred Lady of Mount Li. Xiao Qing, realizing she was standing before the very person whose name she had been impersonating, was completely humbled and pledged her allegiance to Bai Yaoyao, with all her small demons following suit.
Meanwhile, Xu Xuan's elder sister, Xu Jiaorong, a renowned matchmaker, was determined to arrange a marriage between Xu Xuan and Leng Ning. Xu Xuan, however, showed no interest in the matter and tried to avoid the topic. Qing Feng, misunderstanding Xu Xuan's evasive instruction to his sister to "do what she wishes to do" (referring to stocking licorice), mistakenly told Xu Jiaorong that Xu Xuan had agreed to the wedding.
Xu Jiaorong and Leng Ning were delighted, but Xu Xuan quickly intervened, redirecting his sister's attention to some herbs for her husband and sending her home with Leng Ning. As Xu Jiaorong was leaving, the bell of the Apothecary House rang, signifying a crisis. Disciples from the Duan Yang School, known for their mastery of poison defense, were dispatched to investigate. Xu Xuan, accompanied by Qing Feng, went to inspect the herb storeroom.
To their surprise, they discovered that not only were no herbs missing, but there were actually "more" herbs than before. It was Bai Yaoyao who had returned the stolen herbs, but she became trapped inside the Apothecary House. She inadvertently found herself hiding in Xu Xuan’s room. Xu Xuan, sensing her presence and mistaking her for Xiao Qing, noted she was a woman.
Concerned about his reputation, he did not want to be found alone with a woman in his room. He instructed Bai Yaoyao to use a secret tunnel behind his bookshelf to leave undetected, emphasizing the importance of preserving his "glorious reputation." He also playfully warned her not to use covert means to enter the Apothecary House again, though he quickly dismissed it as a joke.
Soon after Bai Yaoyao's departure through the secret passage, Qi Xiao arrived with other disciples, determined to apprehend the demon. Xu Xuan, however, smoothly deflected Qi Xiao, claiming that since the stolen herbs were returned and the demon had repented, they should show forgiveness. Qi Xiao, realizing Xu Xuan had deliberately let the demon escape, gave Xu Xuan a disappointed look, stating, "I'm wrong about you," before turning to leave in anger. That night, Xu Xuan dreamt of a woman in water, smiling alluringly, a face that felt incredibly familiar yet remained tantalizingly out of focus.
