In the ancient past, a renowned war erupted. The Demon Emperor, harboring ill intent, incited the dragon tribe to rebel against the Empyrean Heaven, but they were severely suppressed. The Heavenly Emperor ordered the White and Green Emperors to lead heavenly soldiers to quell the chaos, which resulted in great losses across the four seas before the dragon tribe surrendered.
During this conflict, Ling Chu, the disciple of the White Emperor, and Zi Xuan, the disciple of the Green Emperor, distinguished themselves with prominent achievements. Their reputations spread widely throughout the realm of deity, leading to constant comparison. Both Ling Chu and Zi Xuan were exceptionally gifted and intelligent. To determine whose disciple was superior, the Green and White Emperors made a thousand-year promise to hold a grand battle between them.
A young serpent, Xiao Bai, overheard this, eagerly expressing a desire to become the number one deity, only to be chided by her master for her usual laziness and poor cultivation. Later, the Sacred Lady of Mount Li attended the Heavenly Peach Festival. Her disciple, Xiao Bai, a little white snake, secretly followed due to her gluttony, believing that eating a Heavenly Peach would aid her cultivation.
Although Xiao Bai was lazy in her cultivation and had not yet transformed into human form, she was destined to bear the justice of the world. Recognizing that Xiao Bai needed special guidance to transform and fulfill her destiny, the Sacred Lady brought her to Mount Jiuxi to seek Zi Xuan's aid, believing he was the destined person to help her.
The Sacred Lady revealed that Zi Xuan was born with the "Fate of Seven Prowesses" and was uniquely capable of teaching Xiao Bai. She also disclosed that a great doom was approaching the three realms, and Xiao Bai and Zi Xuan were fated to rescue the mortal world, though they would first endure the eight sufferings of the mortal realm.
One day, while Xiao Bai was wandering lost in the perpetually snow-covered Mount Jiuxi, Ling Chu pursued Zi Xuan for their promised contest. Zi Xuan, finding the delicate white snake shivering in the bitter cold, took pity on her and hid her within his robes to protect her. Ling Chu declared he would not be hidden from and was ready to compete.
Zi Xuan expressed his disbelief that Ling Chu would insist on upholding their promise to compete, especially with the recent end of the chaos of the four seas, questioning the need for competition. Ling Chu insisted on upholding the thousand-year promise to determine the best. Zi Xuan dismissed it as a "thoughtless promise" from a millennium ago and criticized Ling Chu's obsession with fame, stating their contest should be for mutual learning, not serious rivalry.
Ling Chu, however, found the matter to be far from simple. Their intense competition created a tumultuous scene of flying sand and scattered stones. During the battle, the grateful Xiao Bai intervened to assist Zi Xuan, a move that only further enraged the narrow-minded Ling Chu, who declared the contest void due to the white snake's interruption and refused to concede.
After the disrupted contest, Zi Xuan confronted Ling Chu about his hidden injuries and severe "inner heat," which Ling Chu attempted to downplay. Zi Xuan, concerned that the inner heat would consume Ling Chu's deity prowess, provided him with medicine to temporarily suppress it, urging him to let go of his obsession with winning or losing. Ling Chu admitted he couldn't be as carefree as Zi Xuan.
Meanwhile, a discussion arose about using a snake's heart, known for its cool nature, to heal the inner heat. Zi Xuan considered that while a snake's heart could heal Ling Chu, it might harm his future cultivation. He also sensed that something significant had occurred at Mount Kunlun, which the White Emperor was trying to keep secret due to his concern for reputation. Xiao Bai, having overheard the talk of snake hearts, became terrified.
She resolved to escape and crawl back to Mount Li, thinking about her precious life and her desire to cultivate into a deity and travel the three realms. However, Ling Chu intercepted her, determined to take her heart to cure his illness and finally defeat Zi Xuan. Zi Xuan arrived just in time, intervening to save Xiao Bai.
He then used the Eastern Sea Icy Lingzhi, given to him by the Herb Deity, to heal Ling Chu’s inner heat, despite the preciousness of the herb. With Xiao Bai now under his care, Zi Xuan addressed her as "Xiao Bai." He observed her voracious appetite, noting she ate precious Snow Cherry Blossoms, which grant a hundred years of prowess each, as if they were walnuts.
He playfully chided her intelligence for attempting to escape but being caught so easily, remarking she had "never been trained." Zi Xuan took Xiao Bai in, keeping her by his side day and night, feeding her and even allowing her to sleep near him in her snake form. Ling Chu, observing this, questioned Zi Xuan’s unusual decision to protect a white snake, as it was unlike his usual carefree nature.
Zi Xuan explained he liked Xiao Bai's intelligence and that she had risked her life to protect him. He then warned Ling Chu to refrain from using his deity prowess before fully recovering. The White Emperor, speaking to Ling Chu, discussed Ling Chu’s inner heat and excessive competitiveness, reminding him that the path to deity required accepting "nothingness."
He asserted that despite Ling Chu's current injuries affecting his prowess, he and Zi Xuan possessed similar deity powers and were destined for the life of a deity. The White Emperor then revealed a troubling prophecy, stating that Zi Xuan, born with the "Fate of Seven Prowesses," was cursed with loneliness and faced a perilous life-and-death trial. If he conquered it, he would ascend to a high deity; if not, his body and soul would dissolve into heaven and earth.
The White Emperor implored Ling Chu to assist Zi Xuan in overcoming this tribulation. Over time, Xiao Bai consumed many rare fruits and absorbed abundant spiritual energy on Mount Jiuxi, causing her cultivation to advance rapidly, and she began to transform into human form. One day, as Zi Xuan meditated by the water, he was startled by the sight of a beautiful woman. Mistaking her for a demon, he questioned her presence and warned her not to cross the line.
The woman then revealed herself as Xiao Bai, expressing her dismay that Zi Xuan might not like her in human form. Zi Xuan was astonished by her rapid transformation, commenting that he never expected her to cultivate into human form so quickly. Xiao Bai, uncertain if she was truly human or demon, was told by Zi Xuan that her identity was hers to decide.
She soon discovered the convenience of having hands and legs, though she was still clumsy and struggled to walk properly. Zi Xuan patiently taught her how to use chopsticks. That night, despite Zi Xuan's instruction about the impropriety of physical contact between men and women, Xiao Bai secretly transformed back into her original snake form to sleep by his side.
The Sacred Lady of Mount Li discreetly visited Zi Xuan, commending his role in Xiao Bai’s rapid transformation, noting it would have taken a thousand years for Xiao Bai to achieve this beside her. Zi Xuan, however, suspected the Sacred Lady's intentions, remarking on her absence from the Heavenly Peach Festival and the magical barrier of Mount Jiuxi, which Xiao Bai could not have breached alone. He deduced that the Sacred Lady had deliberately orchestrated Xiao Bai's arrival.
The Sacred Lady confirmed his suspicions, explaining that while Xiao Bai was clever, as a demon, her path of cultivation was fraught with peril, and Zi Xuan was the best person to guide her onto the right path. Despite Zi Xuan's own "Fate of Seven Prowesses" and his strict adherence to Taoism, he promised the Sacred Lady he would help Xiao Bai cultivate into a deity as swiftly as possible.
Soon after, a misunderstanding arose when a servant mistook Xiao Bai, now in human form, for a trespassing demon. Zi Xuan clarified the situation and, observing Xiao Bai's unrefined behavior and lack of literacy, decided it was time to teach her to read and write, emphasizing that as a human, every outer behavior represented her personality. Xiao Bai, however, found studying tedious.
She complained that being human was troublesome and expressed a desire to stop reading, suggesting she learn music, chess, calligraphy, or painting instead. Zi Xuan, with gentle patience, agreed and offered to teach her the zither. Later, she attempted to play chess, then presented Zi Xuan with a drawing of herself in her snake form, asking if it was pretty.
Zi Xuan affirmed its beauty, leading Xiao Bai to declare victory and request to revert to her original form for rest. Zi Xuan, though, froze her with a spell, explaining that being human required learning even small things like reading before facing greater challenges. Ultimately, he presented her with a sword he had forged from the Mysterious Ice of Mount Jiuxi.
This sword, which he named "Wan Liu Sword," was meant to aid her practice and travel through the three realms, a name subtly hinting at his unspoken affections. Meanwhile, Tao Tie, the White Emperor's mount, harbored resentment and had released the Black Water Dragon, a ferocious beast from the Eastern Sea, causing chaos. Despite Tao Tie's refusal to repent, the White Emperor, concerned with his reputation, sought to protect him due to their long-standing relationship.
Zi Xuan and Ling Chu realized the gravity of the situation. Ling Chu suspected Tao Tie's actions were related to his disagreement with the Empyrean Heaven's methods of calming the four seas and questioned why Mount Kunlun had not intervened. Zi Xuan acknowledged that whether right or wrong, there would be a future judgment. He proposed that he and Ling Chu go and subdue the Black Water Dragon to prevent it from harming the mortal world.
Ling Chu urged haste, deciding to go first and instructing Zi Xuan to retrieve the Demon Prison before joining him. At the same time, Xiao Bai had secretly ventured to the Heavenly Peach Garden, hoping to retrieve a Heavenly Peach to strengthen Zi Xuan. There, she encountered a regal and noble woman.
Recognizing the place as the forbidden Garden of Heavenly Peach, Xiao Bai quickly surmised that the dignified woman was none other than the Queen Mother of the West, the garden's owner. Xiao Bai apologized profusely for trespassing, explaining that she only wished to obtain a Heavenly Peach to help her friend.
