Upon reaching Penglai Island, Tu Su's demonic energy intensified. Meanwhile, Qing Xue and Yin Qianshang had been taken away by Shao Gong, forcing Tu Su, Lan Sheng, and Xiang Ling to proceed with caution. Shao Gong had used Qinchuan commoners, transformed into burnt ghouls, to block their path. These ghouls were illusions created by a mirage demon. Tu Su and Lan Sheng recognized familiar faces among them, such as Ru Qin, Uncle Wu, and Aunt Wu.

Despite the emotional struggle of facing what appeared to be their loved ones, Xiang Ling identified them as fakes and warned Lan Sheng. Lan Sheng quickly set up a protective net, and both he and Tu Su stabilized their resolve, ultimately breaking the mirage demon's illusion. Lost and unsure where to go next, Tu Su, Lan Sheng, and Xiang Ling tried to use the Dragon Candle Scale to recreate Penglai's past, hoping to find the path to the palace.

During this time, Qing Xue confronted Shao Gong, denouncing his unforgivable actions. In response, Shao Gong revealed a forest of gravestones he had erected for the people of Penglai who had died in a natural disaster, using this as a justification for his deeds. He also, feeling bored, recounted to Qing Xue his life as a celestial spirit, describing the pain of constantly inhabiting different bodies.

Qing Xue learned that his previous hosts had all died, and she tried to persuade him to cherish life. Shao Gong, however, blamed "heaven" for the disaster that took Penglai and viewed human lives as mere grass. He further revealed that Prince Changqin, due to destiny, was cast to the mortal realm, and his celestial spirit was split due to human greed.

Shao Gong, having endured immense suffering, found a brief period of warmth with Xun Fang, but the Penglai disaster then took her away, fueling his intense hatred for "destiny." Qing Xue, akin to another kind and tolerant Xun Fang, repeatedly tried to awaken Shao Gong's conscience, but he remained unyielding and even attempted to turn her into a burnt ghoul.

Shao Gong had also saved and changed Yin Qianshang, using him as a pawn in his games and delighting in the dilemma of benefactor versus enemy that Yin Qianshang now faced. Tu Su, Lan Sheng, and Xiang Ling eventually arrived at the palace and encountered the true Xun Fang, who also identified herself as Tong Yi (and Jìtóng). Xun Fang apologized for Shao Gong's actions and offered to help them open the seals he had placed.

She explained that she had taken a Snow-Beauty Pill refined by Shao Gong to restore her youthful appearance, but it also contained a potent poison, meaning she would die within twelve hours. Xun Fang shared her memories and story with Shao Gong with the three, expressing her wish that Shao Gong might show a shred of remorse. Despite Shao Gong's evil deeds, she still deeply loved him as her husband and hoped to die by his side.

Lan Sheng, however, firmly stated he would not forgive Shao Gong for the many lives he had taken. With Xun Fang's assistance, who used her magic to open multiple palace doors and break the seals, Tu Su immediately raced towards the palace where Qing Xue was held, fearing for her safety.

Memories of Qing Xue spurred him on, and he arrived at Shao Gong's side just in time to prevent him from harming her, whether by feeding her medicine, trying to turn her into a burnt ghoul, or forcing Tu Su to commit suicide with the Burning Sword. Shao Gong, whose magic had momentarily failed, suspected someone was protecting Tu Su's group.

Qing Xue urged him to cease his evil acts, but Shao Gong challenged her, betting that Tu Su would choose between the celestial spirit and Qing Xue. Qing Xue remained confident in Tu Su's choice. Tu Su, Lan Sheng, and Xiang Ling attempted to persuade Shao Gong to abandon his plans for restoring Penglai, but Shao Gong, determined to exact revenge on heaven, refused. He tried to entice Tu Su into letting him absorb his celestial spirit.

Tu Su countered, offering to agree if Shao Gong released Qing Xue, but Shao Gong arrogantly declared Tu Su was not in a position to make demands. At that critical moment, Yin Qianshang suddenly regained consciousness and attacked Shao Gong. Tu Su joined the fray, and the two burst out of the palace, fighting fiercely. Lan Sheng and Xiang Ling rescued Qing Xue, and the three quickly joined the battle. Despite the combined efforts of five against one, they were no match for Shao Gong, who ultimately overpowered and bound them.
