The Psychologist Episode 38 Recap
> The Psychologist Recap
He Dun's parents were watching TV when she unexpectedly returned home. Her father immediately left the room. He Dun confronted Zhao Xiping, asking how long her mother would have kept her father's return a secret if she hadn't discovered it that day. Zhao Xiping tried to explain, but He Dun interrupted, questioning if her mother truly believed He Dun's father was sincere.
She pointed out that if he truly loved them, he wouldn't have abandoned them over a decade ago without any contact. He Dun angrily recalled how Zhao Xiping had suffered, eating only instant noodles and sleeping only a few hours a day to earn her tuition, leaving her public school teacher position for a private one. She lamented that her mother would have been a special-class teacher years ago if she had stayed.
Zhao Xiping tried to reassure her daughter, stating that her sacrifices were willingly made. She then asked why He Dun couldn't forgive her father, who now wished to reconcile. Weeping, He Dun confessed that she wasn't angry at him for hurting her, but for hurting her mother. Meanwhile, Qian Kaiyi caught up with He Dun's father, introducing himself as He Dun's boyfriend. He explained that the root of He Dun's current issues lay with her father.
He Dun's father admitted his fault, acknowledging that he had wronged them. He said that after all these years of absence, it was only after both his parents passed away that he understood Zhao Xiping's choices. He vowed to make amends for his past failings. Qian Kaiyi advised him to also move past his own emotional hurdles, emphasizing that some things, once happened, wouldn't change quickly.
Qian Kaiyi explained that what He Dun wanted was a future where people wouldn't choose to escape just because they were misunderstood. When Qian Kaiyi returned, he found He Dun unconscious. He quickly laid her on the sofa. After waking, He Dun's breathing became rapid. Qian Kaiyi and Zhao Xiping calmly guided her to breathe normally. He Dun cried out "Mom." At the "Night Talk to Your Heart" program, interviews were underway for interns.
Li, one of the interviewers, spoke with Cheng Weizi, who aspired to an editor position and had relevant work experience. Cheng Weizi expressed admiration for Li upon learning she managed the program's Weibo account. After making sure He Dun was asleep, Qian Kaiyi stayed by her side. He took a call from a colleague regarding work, gave instructions, and when He Dun awoke, she insisted on going to her studio.
Qian Kaiyi accepted the jujube and lotus seed soup Zhao Xiping had prepared, said goodbye to her, and took He Dun to her studio. That evening, Ye Niantang was reading a book. Ye Jiahui brought him a cup of tea, which Ye Niantang hesitated to drink but eventually did. He informed Ye Jiahui that he wouldn't be home for dinner the next day.
Ye Jiahui, however, was more interested in asking if his father still had the letter his mother, Fu Tang, had written, to which Ye Niantang nodded. The next day, He Dun's father came to the house again. Zhao Xiping had decided to end their relationship. He Dun's father packed his luggage and left. After closing the door, Zhao Xiping broke down in tears. Later, she retrieved a small box from a larger trunk.
He Dun's counseling studio welcomed a new couple, Dafang and Song, seeking to resolve their marital issues. Dafang believed Song wanted a divorce and, in a fit of emotion, began throwing objects at him. He Dun intervened, calming them down. She then asked the reason for their visit. Dafang suspected Song was having an affair after seeing him take a mysterious phone call. Song explained it was just a dance partner. Dafang also expressed many dissatisfactions with Song's habits.
He Dun identified their interaction as a "pursuer-distancer pattern": Song sought to avoid conflicts, while Dafang pursued him relentlessly, causing unresolved past issues to accumulate and erupt. He Dun explained that if they wanted change, one of them needed to make a concession. She hoped they would both calmly reflect on their goals. Dafang remained fixated on Song's supposed infidelity. Song initially denied cheating but, resigned, eventually conceded, "I do have a mistress if you say so," and abruptly left.
Ye Jiahui visited Fu Tang again, bringing the letter Ye Niantang had mentioned. Fu Tang read it, then laughed, questioning how a mother could not love her own child, deeming the letter valueless. Ye Jiahui asked how she would write such a letter if she were the mother.
Fu Tang replied that she would express deep love for her child, wishing to hug him every day if she could, and hoping he would grow up to be a happy, ordinary person. Suddenly, Fu Tang remarked that it was windy outside and expressed a strong desire to go out, mentioning the sea, mountains, and many people outside while she was confined. Ye Jiahui agreed to her request, promising to take her out the next day.
True to his word, Ye Jiahui picked up Fu Tang. Fu Tang wanted to cook a meal for him, and Ye Jiahui suggested they go to his apartment next to He Dun's studio. Fu Tang toured Ye Jiahui's home, discovering his medical background. Ye Jiahui explained he studied medicine to protect those he cared about. Fu Tang jokingly remarked that she couldn't afford his medical fees.
Realizing he had no condiments at home, Ye Jiahui went to Lili's apartment to borrow her kitchen. Although Lili was upset with Ye Jiahui, she agreed, not wanting to upset Fu Tang. She let them use the kitchen and declined Ye Jiahui's invitation to join them for dinner, stating she had work to do. Later, at their home, a fight erupted over a shirt gifted to Song by his dance partner.
When Song asked why it wasn't washed, Dafang admitted she had intentionally left it out of the laundry. She accused him of bringing "rags" into the house and asked if their marriage was over. Song retorted, asking who truly wanted to end the marriage. He accused Dafang of constantly belittling him both at home and in front of outsiders, including the counselor, and said that while she might see him as "cow dung" to her "flower," others valued him. He declared that if she didn't want him, there were plenty of people who did. Dafang, now thoroughly distraught, cried and cursed Song, telling him to "go to hell."
