> Side Story of Fox Volant Recap
Hu Fei and Yuan Ziyi were out shopping, unaware that danger was lurking nearby. Shang Baozhen watched them enter a clothing store and expressed concern to Official He that Yuan Ziyi's martial arts skills might jeopardize their plan. Official He reassured Shang Baozhen, stating that he had dispatched Cui Baisheng, a master of inflicting harm invisibly. Cui Baisheng could release scorpions from a bamboo tube and command them from a distance to sting anyone he wished.
Hu Fei, however, sensed something amiss. As he saw a scorpion crawling towards Yuan Ziyi's shoulder, he instinctively swatted it away, only to be stung himself. Yuan Ziyi glanced out the door and saw Cui Baisheng hastily leaving, confirming that the attack was a deliberate act. That night, Hu Fei successfully expelled the toxin, his deep internal force allowing him to recover quickly after applying ointment. While Hu Fei recuperated, Yuan Ziyi secretly infiltrated Cui Baisheng’s residence.
From the rooftop, she overheard Cui Baisheng, Official He, and a masked man discussing their plan, which involved using a hallucinogenic incense to incapacitate Hu Fei and Yuan Ziyi once they were exhausted from purging the toxin. Hu Fei, who had followed Yuan Ziyi, also listened in. He felt the masked man looked very familiar but couldn't recall where he had seen him before.
Yuan Ziyi concluded that the culprits were the same officials who had delivered the invitation to the Weituo Sect. Having confirmed their attackers' identities, Yuan Ziyi devised a "tit for tat" strategy, setting an ambush in the courtyard. True to her prediction, Official He and Cui Baisheng arrived and began injecting hallucinogenic incense through a window. Before they could open the door, Hu Fei and Yuan Ziyi appeared, ambushing them from both sides and quickly subduing them.
Hu Fei, jesting about a rule Yuan Ziyi had set for him, claimed he could only kill one person a day. Yuan Ziyi then proposed that Official He and Cui Baisheng fight each other using their unique skills, with only the survivor being spared. As the two men reluctantly began to fight, a dart shot from the shadows.
Hu Fei swiftly intercepted it and pursued the attacker into a dense forest, where he knocked off the assailant's mask, revealing Shang Baozhen, who had miraculously survived. Shang Baozhen, clearly outmatched by Yuan Ziyi, seemed resigned to his fate. But Hu Fei intervened, reflecting on how Shang Baozhen's mother's resentment had led to her fiery demise, and advised Shang Baozhen to change his ways. Confused by Hu Fei's words, Shang Baozhen watched as Hu Fei and Yuan Ziyi departed.
As they left, Yuan Ziyi confronted Hu Fei, having realized he had been faking his leg injury. Hu Fei tried to run away as she pursued him. Meanwhile, Feng Tiannan awoke from a terrifying nightmare in which Hu Fei was chasing and killing him. Feng Yiming and Liu Zhiguo rushed in, only to find Feng Tiannan, still disoriented, strangling a dancing girl to death.
Once lucid, Feng Tiannan declared that the area was no longer safe and urged Liu Zhiguo to leave with him, promising him a future of endless glory and wealth. After careful consideration, Liu Zhiguo agreed to follow. Miao Renfeng was solely responsible for his daughter, Ruolan, even taking her to the market to sell vegetables. Their predicament moved an elderly neighbor, who not only bought all his produce but also offered to look after Ruolan.
In the capital, Tian Guinong visited a temple to pray for the safety of Nan Lan and their unborn child. The reverend, observing joy in the "children palace" between Tian Guinong's eyebrows, confirmed that Nan Lan was pregnant and predicted the birth of a son, bestowing upon him a "mother-and-child safety buckle" and a "jade Guanyin buckle" for protection. Tian Guinong was overjoyed.
Nan Lan, learning of Miao Renfeng's struggles from her maid, began to secretly visit Ruolan at the old woman's house. She revealed her identity to the kind woman and explained her whole story. Heartbroken, Nan Lan would often watch from a hidden corner as Miao Renfeng picked up his daughter, crying at the sight of his retreating back. Over the following days, she visited frequently, her heart aching each time.
Now the wife of a wealthy man and pregnant with a new child who would live in luxury, she was tormented by the thought of Ruolan suffering hardship with her father. The old woman, deeply sympathetic to their plight, suggested Nan Lan speak directly with Miao Renfeng. However, Nan Lan begged her not to reveal her visits, terrified that Miao Renfeng's proud and stubborn nature would lead him to forbid her from ever seeing Ruolan again.
During one visit, her maid warned that Miao Renfeng was approaching, forcing Nan Lan to flee through the back door. When Miao Renfeng arrived, he immediately noticed his daughter's new clothes and a fabric doll nearby, sensing that something unusual had occurred. Before his sea voyage, Yi Ji, the leader of the Nine Dragons Sect, consulted a sage.
The sage declared that Yi Ji was of the water element and, since his journey required sailing, he faced the risk of elemental clashes. To ensure a smooth and lucky journey, the sage advised that no fires be lit in Yijiawan on the day of departure, and no other ships should set sail before Yi Ji's vessel. Yi Ji immediately ordered these strict prohibitions to be enforced throughout Yijiawan.
Since discovering Hu Fei's deception about his leg injury, Yuan Ziyi had been ignoring him for days, despite his repeated attempts to apologize. Hu Fei explained that he had feigned the injury because he had grown up with only his Fourth Uncle, had few friends, and was scared she would leave him. Yuan Ziyi, still angry, made him stand still for an hour.
A nearby vendor, noticing their argument, advised Hu Fei to buy her a gift, earning Hu Fei's gratitude for the wisdom. As Hu Fei and Yuan Ziyi prepared to leave town by waterway, they learned of the Nine Dragons Sect's ban on all other boats sailing before their leader's departure. A local remarked that the sect leader's tyranny was even worse than Feng Tiannan's. Outraged by these unreasonable demands, Hu Fei declared his intention to confront the Nine Dragons Sect.
