Following the destruction of the secret base, Zhang Haixia made a phone call to Mo Yungao, coldly informing him that his men had been completely wiped out. Identifying himself as an agent of the Southern Archives, Haixia noted that Mo Yungao once possessed a conscience and questioned why he had fallen so low, asking where people like them would ultimately end up.
Mo Yungao refused to give a straight answer, merely advising Haixia to follow his inner desires and suggesting that their final destinations would differ. After hanging up, Haixia visited the blind fortune-teller in Xiacheng, who remembered him from a past encounter involving an unpaid silver dollar. Haixia recalled the old man's previous advice to go with the flow of his impulses.
Stricken by deep self-loathing, Haixia confessed that he never wanted to become a monster and believed he should have died instead of surviving. Plagued by mental instability, Haixia suddenly pointed at the old man, declaring him to be Mo Yungao, and executed him. Mo Yungao's ambitious Twilight Grass plan was successfully shattered through the joint efforts of Zhang Haiqi, Zhang Hailou, and Zhang Haixia, with critical support from Zhang Qishan.
While the operation saved tens of thousands of innocent civilians across four cities and dismantled Mo Yungao's forces, it left behind a trail of unresolved issues. Zhang Qishan informed Zhang Haiqi and Zhang Hailou that during the mission, Haixia had gone completely out of control, mercilessly slaughtering the Mo faction warlords and nearly causing the deaths of Qishan's own men, who only survived due to their resilient Zhang family physiques.
Since Haixia had vanished without a trace, Qishan demanded an explanation. Haiqi took full responsibility for Haixia as an archivist, promising to deliver answers. Shortly after, while having extra spicy rice noodles at a Changxiang stall, Hailou questioned if Haixia's sudden madness was a side effect of the medicine. Haiqi urged him to focus on finding Haixia first but warned him to prepare for the worst. Mid-conversation, Haiqi suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed.
Zhang Hailou desperately brought Zhang Haiqi to a local physician, who was baffled to find that while she looked young, her pulse resembled that of a seventy-year-old. Unable to get a real cure, Hailou turned to Zhang Qishan for help, securing her admission to a hospital. There, Qishan revealed that Mo Yungao had poisoned Haiqi on the train with a highly toxic, specialized alkaloid derived from the rare flowers of the Twilight Grass.
Specifically designed to target high-level Zhang family members, the poison was causing Haiqi's body to age at an accelerated rate, leaving her with only three months to live before total organ failure. Qishan explained that the only potential cure lay with the elusive Zhang family patriarch, who had been missing for a long time but was last rumored to be in the vast, mountainous region of Bailejing.
Qishan then left a file on the Twilight Grass incident for Haiqi to review once she woke up. Three days later, Zhang Haiqi regained consciousness. She admitted to Zhang Hailou that she had remained partially aware during her coma and knew the poison was fatal. When Hailou eagerly proposed setting off for Bailejing the next day to find the patriarch, Haiqi instead inquired about Zhang Haixia. Hailou confessed that Haixia had meticulously covered his tracks, leaving Qishan's forces empty-handed.
While Hailou vowed to hunt Haixia down and cure his madness, Haiqi strongly advised against it, warning that if Haixia had truly turned evil, Hailou might be forced to kill his own brother—a deed she knew he could never commit. She dismissed his guilt as a mere obsession. Furthermore, Haiqi flatly refused to go to Bailejing, calmly stating that having lived for over a century, she viewed her impending death not with fear, but as a peaceful and expected transition.
Frustrated and lost, Hailou returned to the Changxiang noodle stall, where he ran into Zhang Qishan. A despondent Hailou poured his heart out, lamenting that his mentor was waiting to die, his brother had vanished into madness, and he felt utterly lost. Qishan offered invaluable advice regarding Haixia, explaining that the best way to handle him is to treat him exactly as before.
By acting as though nothing has changed, Hailou could help preserve the faint hope of Haixia's remaining goodness; if Haixia felt abandoned, his inner light would perish entirely. Meanwhile, Qi Tiezui of the Nine Gates visited Zhang Haiqi at the behest of Zhang Qishan. To ease her mind, Qi Tiezui proposed a simple divination game. Haiqi reluctantly cooperated, choosing the word "South" and coordinates.
Qi Tiezui interpreted the reading, predicting a state where both gain and loss would reach their absolute peaks. He explained that her choice of "South" indicated a significant encounter awaiting her in the southern regions, gently suggesting that if she ever found a renewed will to live, it would be best to seek it on a path of self-preservation. Left alone, Haiqi looked at the documents before her, silently reconsidering her stance on the journey.
Far away, in a secluded village, Mo Yungao was recovering from his injuries. A lieutenant arrived with news that Zhang Qishan's forces had seized their Beilian base, leaving them thoroughly defeated. To the lieutenant's bewilderment, Mo Yungao erupted into ecstatic laughter. Years earlier, Mo Yungao had consulted a legendary blind fortune-teller. When he had asked if he would live or die that day, the old man correctly predicted his death.
Spitefully, Mo Yungao chose to spare him just to ruin his perfect reputation, but the old man died of natural causes anyway. The fortune-teller had also foretold that Mo Yungao's grand design would triumph only after he suffered one crushing defeat and lost three of his generals. Realizing he had just endured that very defeat and already lost two lieutenants, Mo Yungao eagerly offered the vacancy to his current lieutenant, who proudly accepted.
The lieutenant reported that specialized snake medicine had healed Mo Yungao's wounds and that a collaborator's snake-detection system had allowed their timely escape. He also confirmed that although Zhang Haiqi had survived the initial poisoning, the Twilight Grass flower toxin would inevitably claim her life. Soon after, another subordinate announced that a certain Mr. Zhang had been brought to their location, alongside the return of another faction.
A corrupt collaborator then joined Mo Yungao, reporting that while their primary planting base had been destroyed, he had successfully laundered public funds to finance the project's continuation at an abandoned secondary base in Bailejing. Mo Yungao was overjoyed, recalling that his very first clash with the Zhang family patriarch, Zhang Qiling, had taken place in Bailejing. Resolving to return to where his journey began, Mo Yungao set his sights on Bailejing, confident he would finally locate his target.
