Xiu Jiurong and Bai Langhua fell into a valley but landed safely on a pile of hay. Suddenly, they heard a sound. Looking toward it, they saw Bai Jiande, their father. Bai Langhua was overjoyed. Bai Jiande guessed that those who failed the trial would be trapped here by some means, likely because Elder Taiyin didn’t want to reveal the trial’s details. Only when someone completed the trial could they leave. Feng Chang drank to drown his sorrows.

His father didn’t like him, his mother used him to control his younger brother Feng Lanxi, and even Feng Lanxi had lied to him. Yet, he still didn’t want Feng Lanxi to be distracted by his affairs. Feng Lanxi visited Feng Chang, offering to help cancel the marriage if Feng Chang didn’t want to marry Qi Cheng. But Feng Chang no longer trusted him and believed he was just a pawn in the struggle between Feng Lanxi and Madam Baili.

Feng Chang tested Feng Lanxi, surprised by his formidable martial arts, and even more by his cunning. Though Feng Lanxi had never plotted against him, Feng Chang had lost all trust and told him not to interfere in the matter of Qi Cheng. Feeling guilty that his brother had to marry someone he didn’t love because of him, Feng Lanxi’s thoughts drifted to Bai Fengxi. He sighed that the path he walked was one of solitude.

Chuan Yun sent word: a warhorse now cost ten silver leaves, showing Wang Minghai was sparing no expense to stop Feng Lanxi’s horse trade. Even if Feng Lanxi was willing to spend that money, it would arouse suspicion from his father about his identity. So he decided to write a letter to Chuan Yun.

At the same time, Chuan Yun and Chuan Yu had already bought a thousand warhorses at four silver leaves each and sent them back through Yu Ruxuan’s people. Feng Lanxi reported to his father the successful purchase of a thousand horses. Then, Minister of War Wang Minghai came to report that those horses had come from illegal traders. The Lord of Yongzhou was furious. Feng Lanxi remained calm.

Wang Minghai, eager to catch him, took the Lord of Yongzhou to inspect the horses, only to find that they were not the ones from the black market. It turned out that these horses had been prepared by Ma Mengqi, head of the Ma family, in gratitude for Feng Lanxi’s past help in resolving the Duanhun Sect crisis. Feng Lanxi accused Wang Minghai of slander and reported that there was no illegal horse trade.

Wang Minghai had embezzled the funds and framed others to cover it up. Feng Lanxi presented evidence. Enraged, the Lord of Yongzhou ordered Wang Minghai imprisoned in Tian Prison. While in prison, Feng Ju instructed Li Jiaxian to have Wang Minghai killed by fellow inmates. News came from the prison: Wang Minghai had hanged himself. The Prime Minister knew his brother, greedy and cowardly, could never commit suicide—this was Madam Baili’s doing.

He feared Wang Minghai would betray Feng Ju to save himself and vowed revenge. Chuan Yu brought Feng Lanxi’s token to the Yongzhou military camp to deliver the horses. Xun Anhou accepted them, knowing he now owed Feng Lanxi a great debt—the outcome of the game was now certain. Bai Fengxi and Yu Wuyuan crossed a cliff. Yu Wuyuan suggested they act separately, then deliberately triggered a mechanism inside the mountain to cause an earthquake, trapping Bai Fengxi.

Elder Taiyin hadn’t expected Yu Wuyuan to be so ruthless for the sake of Lanyin Biyue, trapping Bai Fengxi in a cave. Enraged, he ordered his people to lure Yu Wuyuan into the Yan Gui Formation. News from the post station: a merchant convoy was transporting a large number of horses from Eastern Territory to Yongjing, a gift from Feng Lanxi to the Lord of Yongzhou. If successful, Feng Lanxi would be one step closer to becoming the Hereditary Prince.

Madam Baili couldn’t allow this and ordered someone to sabotage the mission and steal the horses. News from Misty Mountain: an earthquake had occurred, destroying nearby villages and causing landslides. People might have been buried. Feng Lanxi was extremely worried about Bai Fengxi’s safety. News also came from the Fountain Abode: several groups of horse bandits were gathering, likely targeting their merchant convoy.

Feng Lanxi prepared to personally handle the matter and coordinated with the people from the Abode to assist Chuan Yu. After dealing with the bandits, Feng Lanxi rushed to Misty Mountain, concerned about Bai Fengxi’s safety. Fortunately, the saker falcon found her and rescued her from the cave. Learning that Bai Fengxi had been traveling with Yu Wuyuan in recent days, Feng Lanxi was jealous and insisted she travel with him from then on.

He also wanted to test how formidable Elder Taiyin truly was. He roasted food for Bai Fengxi, and she gave him fruit she had picked. The next day, Feng Lanxi and Bai Fengxi arrived at a cave, where the Liu Yao Formation of King Lanling had been set. To break the formation, they had to find the key. Every stone tile on the ground was a hidden trap—it couldn’t be forced, only solved with wit.

Bai Fengxi spotted complete characters on the ground and remembered the portraits of seven kings in the Tower of Eight Wastelands, each with a poem. With perfect teamwork, they successfully broke the Liu Yao Formation. They passed another trial. Bai Fengxi asked Elder Taiyin where her master was. Elder Taiyin replied her master was currently safe, but to rescue them, they needed the Lanyin Biyue.

Everyone who received his hero’s invitation had to undergo trials—what followed depended on their own fate. Feng Lanxi was confident that together, they could succeed.
