War of Faith Recap

Episode 1 Recap

1930s Shanghai, the Nationalist government was corrupt and rotten, and major gangs engaged in open strife and veiled struggles, with constant conflicts. Wei Ruolai was from Jiangxi, from a poor family since childhood. He followed his older brother to Shanghai to seek a living. While working part-time, Wei Ruolai also studied at an accounting school. To get a full meal, Wei Ruolai occasionally risked helping his fellow townsmen's gang check accounts.

Wei Ruolai was entrusted by the gang boss Qian Shaoliang to check the accounts. The accountant had managed the gang's accounts for over twenty years, and he did it flawlessly. However, with his exceptional auditing skills, he quickly uncovered fourteen deeply hidden fake accounts, involving over three thousand yuan. The person concerned refused to admit it and cursed at Wei Ruolai. Qian Shaoliang immediately ordered the accountant to be shot dead. Wei Ruolai was trembling with fear.

Qian Shaoliang asked Wei Ruolai to become the accountant at the gang's Hengmei Trading Company after graduation, promising him generous treatment and guaranteeing that no one in Shanghai would dare bully him. Wei Ruolai had already decided where he wanted to work, so Qian Shaoliang did not force him. The new Senior Advisor of the Central Bank, Shen Tunan, arrived in Shanghai to take office.

Deng Ze, Director of the Central Bank's Discipline Inspection Department, personally went to the station to pick him up. Shen Tunan's purpose for this trip was to rectify the Shanghai financial market, suppressing banks with foreign investment backgrounds that did not obey the Nanjing government, and winning over private banks to strengthen the Central Bank's power. Wei Ruolai rented a place on Qibao Street, which was a mixed bag of good and bad people and run-down.

Fortunately, the rent was cheap here, and the neighbors were all kind to him. Having left his hometown for many years, Wei Ruolai gradually came to regard this place as his home. Neighbor Auntie Zhou liked to trade stocks. Wei Ruolai recommended a Commercial Bank stock to her. Auntie Zhou dragged him to rush and buy. This stock kept rising from the moment it opened.

Auntie Zhou regretted not buying enough and took out all her money to increase her position. As soon as Shen Tunan took office, he vigorously carried out his work, and the Central Bank's business flourished. This move shook the interests of the Shanghai Green Gang, and they hated Shen Tunan deeply. Shen Tunan and Deng Ze went out for business. Their car was bombed, but fortunately, Shen Tunan had not yet gotten in.

This was the fourth assassination attempt on Shen Tunan since he took office. Lin Qiaosong, Captain of the Investigation Team of the Military Law Department of the Songhu Garrison Command, was ordered to take over the twelve prisoners extradited from the French Concession. Inspector Henry only sent four, while the others were being interrogated regarding other cases. The Commercial Bank stock rose from eighteen to twenty-three yuan.

Shen Tunan bought three thousand shares of Commercial Bank stock, and the stock fell sharply. Wei Ruolai watched helplessly as the stock plummeted to eighteen yuan. He saw that the large investors were shorting the Commercial Bank stock and told Auntie Zhou to sell all of hers, but Auntie Zhou did not listen at all. The stock plunged all the way down, falling to fourteen yuan. Auntie Zhou was stunned. Wei Ruolai helped her sell all her shares.

Auntie Zhou lost a lot of money. She cried, beat her chest, and stamped her feet, pushing all the blame onto Wei Ruolai. Wei Ruolai gently advised Auntie Zhou and quickly went to find a rickshaw to take her home, Due to the betrayal of traitor Gu Lun, many underground members of the Communist Party of China were arrested. Shen Jinzhen, in order to rescue the betrayed comrades, engaged in a bloody battle with the police.

Lin Qiaosong personally directed the scene. Subsequently, a large number of Kuomintang secret agents rushed to the scene upon hearing the news. Shen Jinzhen was accidentally injured. She quickly changed out of her night clothes and mingled into the crowd. She and Wei Ruolai called the same rickshaw. Worried that the secret agents would chase after them, Shen Jinzhen pulled Wei Ruolai onto the rickshaw without explanation, and they quickly left, pretending to be a couple going to the theater.

Lin Qiaosong searched the scene and found a set of night clothes worn by a woman. He sent people to set up checkpoints at the intersections to strictly check passing people. Wei Ruolai had to get off the rickshaw. He accidentally saw bloodstains on Shen Jinzhen's body. Worried about being implicated, he had to take out Qian Shaoliang's name card to pass. Shen Jinzhen thanked Wei Ruolai for helping her escape danger.

Wei Ruolai was anxious to go back and pick up Auntie Zhou, so he and Shen Jinzhen hurriedly said goodbye and left. Shen Tunan successfully shorted the Commercial Bank stock, and his superiors affirmed his achievement. Shen Jinzhen came to the liaison station to meet with station master Xu Nuo. He helped her bandage her wound. Shen Jinzhen asked Xu Nuo to quickly transfer other comrades to prevent them from being shot. Wei Ruolai came home very late.

He learned from his neighbors that Auntie Zhou had been cursing all night and even threatened to stomp on him and feed him to the cats. Wei Ruolai had to climb in through the window to get home. He was fired from his job because he delayed his work by helping Auntie Zhou trade stocks. He had very little money left.

Remembering what his mentor said before graduation, his mentor advised him to apply for a job at the Central Bank. The exam was being administered by Shen Tunan, a financial expert who returned from studying in Germany. He publicly stated that he did not look at academic qualifications, only hiring talented individuals. Wei Ruolai woke up in the morning and heard Auntie Zhou yelling and shouting at home.

He quietly hid to wash his face and brush his teeth, then changed into a set of clothes and prepared to go out. Auntie Zhou proactively came to apologize to him and gave him a coat, telling him to apply to the Central Bank looking decent. She only hoped that Wei Ruolai would not forget her after he became successful. Wei Ruolai felt warm in his heart.

Awen took Wei Ruolai to the bank by rickshaw and also got him a good luck charm for safety. There were many candidates applying for the Central Bank today. Shen Tunan specifically found a classroom. Halfway through the exam, a large fire suddenly broke out outside. The classroom was filled with smoke, and the candidates were choking and coughing non-stop.

Episode 2 Recap

When the candidates learned about the fire, they swarmed out of the classroom. They were trapped in a room waiting for rescue. Only Wei Ruolai remained in his seat answering the questions as if nothing had happened. The invigilator advised him to go out and take shelter. Wei Ruolai insisted on finishing all the questions before leaving. Wei Ruolai saw a cleaning lady who was choked by smoke in the corridor and gave her emergency first aid.

He then found the escape route left by Shen Tunan and covered the candidates for a smooth escape. He not only rescued the cleaning lady but also used the fire fighting facilities in the courtyard to extinguish the fire. It turned out that the fire was carefully arranged by Shen Tunan to test the candidates' ability to react. It was an abandoned building.

Most of the candidates were from influential families; they were unlearned and wanted to get a job at the bank through connections. In the end, only Wei Ruolai passed the test. His exam score was also full marks. Shen Tunan was very optimistic about him and interviewed him together with Deng Ze. Wei Ruolai stayed to put out the fire because he wanted to protect the archives inside, but he didn't expect the rooms to be empty.

Shen Tunan briefly understood Wei Ruolai's situation. Wei Ruolai truthfully answered that he was a poor scholar and only wanted to earn a lot of money. Shen Tunan asked him to talk about the duties and development of the Central Bank. Wei Ruolai's analysis was well-reasoned. Shen Tunan then tested Wei Ruolai's memory. He could flip through a book quickly and answer questions fluently.

Deng Ze suspected that he had seen the book beforehand, so he gave him an account book. Wei Ruolai read it from beginning to end, not only memorizing every entry but also pointing out one incorrect entry. Shen Tunan was very optimistic about Wei Ruolai and wanted to recommend him to a higher-paying bank. Wei Ruolai hesitated for a moment before refusing. Shen Tunan greatly appreciated Wei Ruolai and wanted to formally hire him.

Deng Ze found out that Wei Ruolai's hometown was Ji'an, Jiangxi Province, which was a base for Communist Party activities. Moreover, Wei Ruolai's older brother left his hometown during the Party purge. Based on the principle of not hiring someone if in doubt, he canceled Wei Ruolai's job opportunity. Wei Ruolai had no choice but to leave disappointed. Shen Tunan felt it was a pity for Wei Ruolai. Wei Ruolai returned to Qibao Street dejected.

Wen Biao, who had just finished work, greeted him warmly and invited him to eat wontons. The neighbors all spoke kind words of persuasion to him. Auntie Zhou stood up for Wei Ruolai. A neighbor Uncle, who used to work at Jiao Tong Bank, pointed out sharply that Wei Ruolai's inherent value did not meet the Central Bank's standards and encouraged him not to be discouraged. Wei Ruolai was unwilling to give up just like that.

He dug out the Central Bank briefings he had collected, which all contained news about Shen Tunan. He conducted a comprehensive analysis and then went to the stock exchange, finally seeing clearly Shen Tunan's intention to use Kunpeng Industry to swallow up the four major private banks. Xu Nuo sent a telegram to the Jiangxi base area, reporting the news that eight comrades had been betrayed by a traitor.

Wei Ruochuan was ordered to go to Shanghai to rescue the eight comrades betrayed by the traitor Gu Lun. Before departing, Lei Ming, a staff member of the Jiangxi Provincial Bank, handed him a box of gold bars. Today was Christmas, and Shen Tunan held a cocktail party at his home. Celebrities from all walks of life in Shanghai came to attend.

Kang Shaojie, Director of the Military Law Department of the Songhu Garrison Command, was also invited to the banquet. He had found out that someone from the Green Gang had planted a bomb in Shen Tunan's car beforehand. Fortunately, Shen Tunan hadn't gotten into the car yet, so he escaped unharmed. His wife, Su Cishu, was very anxious when she learned that Shen Tunan was in danger. Shen Tunan patiently comforted her.

Lin Qiaosong came to the dinner with Kang Shaojie. He even specially changed into a sharp suit, hoping to take this opportunity to make connections with celebrities from all walks of life in Shanghai. Kang Shaojie saw through his intentions and forcibly drove him away. Lin Qiaosong felt indignant and vowed to make a name for himself sooner or later.

Gao Feng, Deputy Director of the Central Bank's Foreign Exchange Department, heard that Shen Tunan was secretly investigating him, so he sought help from Yu Shiqing, President of the Jiangsu-Zhejiang Chamber of Commerce, and was determined to get rid of Shen Tunan. He also revealed to Zhang Mingquan, President of Tongshang Bank, Shen Tunan's method of using stocks to suppress Tongshang Bank. Zhang Mingquan knew that Shen Tunan was accumulating wealth for the Nanjing government.

Yu Shiqing advised Gao Feng not to be impatient. Wei Ruolai learned that Shen Tunan's family was holding a cocktail party, and he managed to find an invitation to enter the Shen family home. Shen Tunan publicly announced the dismissal of Gao Feng and exposed Gao Feng's illegal gains of 280,000 yuan through speculating on exchange rates, causing tens of millions in losses to the government.

Gao Feng tried every means to argue, but Shen Tunan had already obtained conclusive evidence. Kang Shaojie ordered Gao Feng to be arrested. Shen Jinzhen is Shen Tunan's younger sister. Su Cishu dressed her up carefully and asked her to go on stage to play the piano for the guests to liven things up. Shen Jinzhen's piano music was melodious, and the guests applauded together and cheered for her.

Kang Shaojie Wei Ruolai recognized Shen Jinzhen and thought she was invited by Shen Tunan. He called her aside and asked her to convey a message to Shen Tunan: he had solved the puzzle of Kunpeng Industry. Xu Nuo took advantage of the chaos to give Shen Jinzhen a note. Her superior had assigned Shen Jinzhen to eliminate Gu Lun. Shen Jinzhen relayed Wei Ruolai's words to Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan called Wei Ruolai aside privately.

Wei Ruolai explained Shen Tunan's intentions in detail. Shen Tunan suspected that he had secretly seen the bank's confidential information and told him to surrender to the Investigation Team.

Episode 3 Recap

Wei Ruolai clearly stated that he had not stolen confidential information from the Central Bank and had no access to those secret documents. He had inferred everything based on newspaper reports. Shen Tunan's meticulously planned scheme to use Kunpeng Industry to swallow up the four major private banks was an absolute secret, and it was impossible for Wei Ruolai to have figured it out. However, Wei Ruolai was certain of his claims and spoke logically.

Shen Tunan admired Wei Ruolai greatly. Wei Ruolai was determined to work for the Central Bank, voluntarily offered to sign a confidentiality agreement, and even pledged his life. Shen Tunan refused again, saying that he was at the Central Bank to fight a battle, while Wei Ruolai wanted to support his family. Their beliefs were different. Wei Ruolai completely saw through the widespread corruption among officials and vowed to follow Shen Tunan to change this greedy financial circle.

Shen Tunan had no choice but to tell him that his hometown, Jiangxi, was a Communist Party base, which was a major taboo for the Central Bank when hiring. Wei Ruolai was greatly disappointed. After careful consideration, Shen Tunan decided to let Wei Ruolai be his private assistant. Wei Ruolai was so happy he couldn't close his mouth. He asked Shen Tunan to write a confirmation letter to Huang Congyun, just in case Shen Tunan changed his mind.

Shen Jinzhen came to find Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan wanted to introduce Wei Ruolai to the guests. Only then did Wei Ruolai realize that Shen Jinzhen was Shen Tunan's younger sister. Shen Jinzhen quietly advised Shen Tunan to think twice, as he had only just met Wei Ruolai and did not know his background well. Shen Tunan was very optimistic about Wei Ruolai. He formally introduced Wei Ruolai to guests like Deng Ze and Kang Shaojie.

When Kang Shaojie learned that Wei Ruolai was from Ji'an, Jiangxi, he worried that he might have a Communist Party background. Shen Tunan vouched for Wei Ruolai, and Kang Shaojie didn't ask further, but privately reminded Shen Tunan to be cautious. This was Wei Ruolai's first time attending such a cocktail party. He was in a great mood and drank heartily by himself, quickly getting drunk. Wei Ruolai returned to Qibao Street very late. Wen Biao escorted him home.

He brought a large bag of food for Wen Biao. When Wen Biao learned that he was Shen Tunan's private assistant, he was also happy for him. When the neighbors learned that Wei Ruolai had found a good job, they set off firecrackers early in the morning to celebrate for him. Auntie Zhou and Uncle both came to see Wei Ruolai and gave him many admonishments.

Uncle also gave him guidance and taught him the secrets to establishing himself firmly in the bank. Wei Ruolai took everything to heart. Wei Ruolai took the tram to the Central Bank for work in the morning. Huang Congyun took the new employees on a tour of the bank and assigned them to different departments. Huang Congyun took Wei Ruolai to Shen Tunan's office and reminded him to move out of Qibao Street.

Wei Ruolai was used to living there, so Huang Congyun reminded him not to say that he lived in Qibao Street, a slum. Shen Tunan took Wei Ruolai to meet with the executives of Tongshang Bank and asked him to take notes. Seeing Tongshang Bank being swallowed up by Shen Tunan, Zhang Mingquan was unwilling to accept it, so he sought help from Yu Shiqing. Yu Shiqing was the second-largest shareholder of Tongshang Bank.

Xingxia Bank was also Shen Tunan's target. Yu Shiqing agreed to help, but told Zhang Mingquan to bear the consequences himself. Shen Tunan took Wei Ruolai to meet with the executives of Tongshang Bank and reassured them, asking them to stay on. Shen Tunan sent Huang Congyun to the school to inquire about Wei Ruolai's background, worrying that he might have a red background. Shen Jinzhen found out Gu Lun's whereabouts.

She disguised herself as a cleaning lady at the hotel and quietly approached Gu Lun's room. She shot and killed Gu Lun. The hotel descended into chaos. Shen Jinzhen took advantage of the confusion to change into a Western-style dress and escape safely. Lin Qiaosong and the police rushed to the scene upon hearing the news. They conducted a detailed investigation of the scene and discovered that Gu Lun had been drugged with soda before being killed.

Lin Qiaosong deduced that the killer was a woman, and remembering the previous shootout, concluded that it was the same person. Yu Shiqing sent Manager Wang of Xingxia Bank to accompany Zhang Mingquan and confront Shen Tunan. They arrived at the stock exchange early. Shen Tunan had already prepared countermeasures. Tongshang Bank's stock price was stable. He injected a large amount of capital into Xingxia Bank, causing its stock price to plummet all the way.

Manager Wang took out all his funds to rescue the market. Shen Tunan seized the opportunity and immediately sold, reinvesting in Xinhe Cotton Yarn shares, which were Xingxia Bank's largest asset. Xingxia Bank's stock gradually stabilized, while Xinhe Cotton Yarn began to plunge. Manager Wang immediately panicked. He called Yu Shiqing for help. Yu Shiqing told him to do everything possible to stabilize Xinhe shares.

Manager Wang used a large sum of money to make Xinhe's stock price rise all the way. Shen Tunan told his broker to sell Xinhe and reinvest in Jinlong Cement shares. Wei Ruolai witnessed Shen Tunan's series of operations and saw that he was using a tactic of "beating the grass to startle the snake. " Lin Qiaosong arrested Li Chengda, an underground Communist Party liaison, and subjected him to severe torture. Li Chengda refused to yield even unto death.

Seeing Jinlong stock falling, Manager Wang was at a loss. He had no choice but to seek help from Yu Shiqing again. Yu Shiqing told him to invest all his funds into Jinlong.

Episode 4 Recap

Lin Qiaosong used both tough and soft tactics on Li Chengda. Li Chengda vowed not to yield even unto death. Lin Qiaosong brought out his wife and children to threaten him, and Li Chengda had no choice but to surrender. Yu Shiqing guessed that Shen Tunan's capital chain was insufficient, so he called Shen Tunan and advised him to use the Central Bank building as collateral.

Shen Tunan still had the trump card, Gao Feng; as long as Gao Feng confessed their act of short selling and buying long using exchange rates, Yu Shiqing would be held accountable by the Nanjing government. Shen Tunan was determined to acquire Tongshang Bank and guaranteed that Yu Shiqing's interests would remain unchanged. Yu Shiqing had no choice but to compromise and asked Shen Tunan to mediate.

Shen Tunan seized the opportunity to press on, taking out all his funds to take over Tongshang Bank. Wei Ruolai witnessed Shen Tunan's series of operations with his own eyes and was completely impressed by him. Shen Tunan gave him guidance, and Wei Ruolai benefited greatly. Shen Jinzhen met with Xu Nuo. She regretted not killing Lin Qiaosong and was eager to discuss rescuing the eight comrades who were locked up with Xu Nuo.

Xu Nuo sent her to meet with a person code-named "Lone Star" who came from the base area. Lone Star was ordered to bring a large sum of money to redeem the eight of them at a price of five thousand silver dollars per person. Seeing Tongshang Bank slip through his fingers, Zhang Mingquan asked Yu Shiqing and Manager Wang for help in rescuing the market. Yu Shiqing told him to obediently hand over Tongshang Bank to Shen Tunan.

Shen Tunan successfully acquired fifty-one percent of Tongshang Bank's shares using Kunpeng Industry. Wei Ruolai suggested using the newspaper to release false news about gangsters shorting Xingxia Bank, thereby bringing Xingxia Bank into their fold as well. Shen Tunan praised him highly. Zhang Mingquan came to settle accounts with Shen Tunan, but Shen Tunan exposed the unsavory dealings between him and Gao Feng face-to-face, leaving Zhang Mingquan speechless. Wei Ruochuan came to meet Li Chengda.

He was curious about the injury on Li Chengda's face. Li Chengda lied that he was beaten by his brother-in-law. Wei Ruochuan didn't think too much about it. Lin Qiaosong sent people to keep an eye on Li Chengda's every move. Wei Ruolai received entry training. He listened attentively and took notes. Secretary Huang, under the guise of Shen Tunan's name, deliberately prevented him from receiving training and assigned him a lot of work.

If he couldn't pass the assessment, he would be dismissed. Wei Ruolai was burdened with a lot of chores according to Secretary Huang's requirements. He was so busy every day that he had no time to receive training. Wei Ruochuan went to the cafe for a meeting. Lin Qiaosong learned this news from Li Chengda and immediately rushed to the cafe with his men to ambush. Shen Jinzhen and the foreigner Peter arrived at the cafe chatting and laughing.

She recognized Wei Ruochuan, who was holding an expired "Shen Bao", as the "Lone Star" who was there for the meeting, at a glance. Lin Qiaosong led his men in to arrest Wei Ruochuan. Shen Jinzhen quickly pulled Lin Qiaosong aside. Lin Qiaosong was eager to catch the person. He sent people to pull Shen Jinzhen and Hunt away, and went directly to Wei Ruochuan, forcing him to surrender his weapons.

Lin Deshuan took advantage of the moment to jump out the window and escape, but was unfortunately shot and injured. Lin Qiaosong led his men in hot pursuit. Li Chengda got out of the car and was injured by stray bullets. Wei Ruochuan managed to escape after much effort. Shen Jinzhen reported back to Xu Nuo. Xu Nuo assigned her to keep a close eye on the movements of large funds at the Central Bank.

Lin Qiaosong's carefully planned operation failed, and he was furious. His assistant felt that Shen Jinzhen had delayed his operation, but Lin Qiaosong didn't take it to heart. Shen Jinzhen asked Shen Tunan about the flow of funds in the bank, and Shen Tunan answered truthfully. Wei Ruochuan managed to find Wei Ruolai. He was dying from excessive blood loss.

He told Wei Ruolai to take his seal to the bank to retrieve a box and also told him to take the expired Shen Bao to the meeting point. Wei Ruochuan bravely sacrificed himself due to his severe injuries. Wei Ruolai was heartbroken and wished he were dead. He buried Wei Ruochuan overnight. Wei Ruolai was overwhelmed with grief over Wei Ruochuan's death. He came to the bank early in the morning to retrieve the box Wei Ruochuan had deposited.

Inside was a box full of gold bars. Wei Ruolai was stunned into silence.

Episode 5 Recap

Wei Ruolai came to the bank early in the morning. He gave the seal, key, and safekeeping slip that Wei Ruochuan gave him before his death to the vault manager. The manager took the key and retrieved the box that Wei Ruochuan had stored. Wei Ruolai was stunned when he opened the box. It contained twenty gold bars. Wei Ruolai couldn't believe they were real. He repeatedly confirmed it before leaving cautiously. Wei Ruolai returned to the office.

He hid Wei Ruochuan's seal and a notice used for meeting. Secretary Huang returned. Wei Ruolai quickly poured him tea and water. Because of nervousness, he spilled water all over the table. Secretary Huang noticed something was off with him and pressed him hard for the reason. Wei Ruolai used the excuse of not sleeping well to cover it up. Secretary Huang assigned him a large amount of work. Wei Ruolai quickly went to do it.

Wang Shanbin was a new clerk. After his training, he and his colleagues came upstairs to visit. Secretary Huang forcefully chased them out. Shen Jinzhen secretly took Shen Tunan's work schedule. She immediately went to the fashion store to give it to Xu Nuo. Because she didn't arrive at the agreed time for the meeting, she was reprimanded by Xu Nuo. Shen Jinzhen gave all her gold and silver jewelry and savings to Xu Nuo.

She asked him to transfer them to the Jiangxi base area. Shen Jinzhen had not received the meeting signal that Lone Star was supposed to publish in the Shen Bao. Worried about his safety, she wanted to go ask Lin Qiaosong for information. Xu Nuo reminded her not to expose her identity. Lin Qiaosong was eager to achieve merit and rise in status quickly. He sent people everywhere to search for Wei Ruochuan. However, they found nothing.

Lin Qiaosong learned from a traitor that if a secret meeting of the underground party failed, they would send a contact signal through the newspaper. He sent people to all major newspaper offices to copy all paid advertisements. Li Chengda revealed to Lin Qiaosong that Wei Ruochuan had read two books. Lin Qiaosong thought it was useless and intimidated him. After Wei Ruolai finished the work assigned by Secretary Huang, he seized the time to attend training.

During class, he often thought of his deceased brother Wei Ruochuan. Shen Tunan noticed he was distracted and went to the classroom to remind him. After class, Wei Ruolai went to the newspaper office and published a notice. He pretended to have a cold and covered his face, fearing he would be targeted. Shen Jinzhen proactively went to Lin Qiaosong to learn shooting. She also invited him to dinner. Lin Qiaosong was flattered.

He had admired Shen Jinzhen for a long time. Now he finally had a chance to be alone with Shen Jinzhen, and he was overjoyed. He opened up to Shen Jinzhen, talking about his frustrations at work. Shen Jinzhen understood his difficulties and indirectly inquired about Lone Star's news. Zhang Mingquan was unwilling to hand over Tongshang Bank to Shen Tunan. He brought people to transfer the funds from the vault.

Shen Tunan was in a hurry to pick up the President. He sent Wei Ruolai to stop Zhang Mingquan. Zhang Mingquan led people to transfer assets. Wei Ruolai arrived in time with patrolmen. He didn't allow Zhang Mingquan to take a single cent. Zhang Mingquan punched and kicked Wei Ruolai. Wei Ruolai was beaten black and blue, his face covered in blood. He held onto Zhang Mingquan's leg tightly and wouldn't let go.

Zhang Mingquan drew his gun, wanting to shoot him. Shen Tunan rushed over to help Wei Ruolai. He forcefully drove Zhang Mingquan away and sealed Tongshang Bank's money on the spot. Shen Tunan was both anxious and angry seeing Wei Ruolai's terrible state. He reminded him not to risk his life next time. He also comforted him. Shen Jinzhen came home very late. Shen Tunan learned that she had dinner with Lin Qiaosong.

He advised her not to associate with people like Lin Qiaosong. Shen Jinzhen retorted sarcastically. Lin Qiaosong sent people to collect all the notices published in the major newspapers. He screened them one by one. Soon, he discovered that the registration information for Zheng Rong Shoe Factory had a problem. He immediately brought people to investigate. There was no Zheng Rong Shoe Factory at all. Lin Qiaosong determined that this was a contact code for the underground party.

He arrested Li Chengda for questioning. Li Chengda was completely unaware of this. Lin Qiaosong remembered that Li Chengda had said Wei Ruochuan took two books. He suspected those were codebooks. Lin Qiaosong went to Li Chengda's bookstore and took the two books back for comparison. Xu Nuo deciphered the information published in the newspaper. Lone Star agreed to meet tomorrow in the Central Bank lobby. Shen Jinzhen volunteered to go to the meeting point.

Xu Nuo was worried about her safety. Shen Jinzhen insisted on going. It was very convenient for her to enter and exit the Central Bank. If she encountered an emergency, she could seek help from Shen Tunan. Lin Qiaosong's subordinate Biaozi found that "Guwen Guanzhi" was the codebook. He quickly deciphered the meeting time and location from the newspaper.

Episode 6 Recap

Wei Ruolai came early in the morning to report to Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan noticed he had been distracted lately and reminded him not to take it lightly. He also said that if he couldn't pass the graduation exam, he would still be expelled. Before three o'clock, Lin Qiaosong personally led his men to set up an ambush in the Central Bank lobby.

Wei Ruolai took advantage of the empty office to take out the seal and safekeeping slip left by Wei Ruochuan. He came to the lobby and waited patiently. Shen Jinzhen came to the Central Bank holding a Shen Bao newspaper. She sat in the lobby and carefully observed everyone coming and going, and discovered Lin Qiaosong and Biaozi in disguise. Wei Ruolai saw many suspicious people in the lobby and was terrified, not knowing what to do.

He went to the restroom and washed his face with cold water, forcing himself to calm down. Wei Ruolai came to the lobby again and opened the expired "Shen Bao" newspaper he had prepared beforehand. Shen Jinzhen recognized that he was holding the contact newspaper in his hand and felt very puzzled. Biaozi became suspicious of Wei Ruolai and led his men to arrest him. Shen Jinzhen got there first and came in front of Wei Ruolai.

Using the excuse of slacking off, she severely reprimanded him and sent him to the counter to help the arsenal collect payments. Wei Ruolai had important matters and it was inconvenient for him to leave. He was scolded severely by Shen Jinzhen again. Wei Ruolai continued waiting for someone in the lobby. Shen Jinzhen went to the second floor to ask Shen Tunan to help collect payments. Shen Tunan couldn't resist her and had to patiently persuade her.

Wei Ruolai waited for a long time in the lobby but didn't see anyone come to make contact. He secretly put the seal and the newspaper back behind that painting. Wei Ruolai came to find Shen Tunan and met Shen Jinzhen at the doorway. Shen Tunan told him to escort Shen Jinzhen to prevent her from causing trouble again.

Shen Jinzhen saw that no one was around and wanted to take out the newspaper and make contact with Wei Ruolai, but Secretary Huang suddenly called out to Shen Jinzhen. Shen Jinzhen had to put the newspaper back in her bag. Wei Ruolai hailed a rickshaw and sent Shen Jinzhen away. Biaozi and Lin Qiaosong had been staking out outside the Central Bank. Biaozi became suspicious of Shen Jinzhen, as she had appeared at the underground party's contact points twice.

He advised Lin Qiaosong not to be blinded by emotion, but Lin Qiaosong had deep trust in Shen Jinzhen. Shen Jinzhen came to report back to Xu Nuo. She did not wait for Lone Star. Wei Ruolai came with the newspaper to make contact, but she did not have time to exchange the code phrase. Xu Nuo suspected that Wei Ruolai was a decoy set up by Lin Qiaosong and wanted to go and test him.

The more Lin Qiaosong thought about it, the more something felt off. He also became suspicious of Shen Jinzhen. He called the arsenal to confirm that Shen Jinzhen had gone to collect payments and confirmed that she had not lied. Lin Qiaosong sent Biaozi to buy a bouquet of yellow roses, as he wanted to go apologize to Shen Jinzhen. Lin Qiaosong also told Biaozi to notify Li Chengda to search Wei Ruolai's home.

Li Chengda came to Wei Ruolai's home under orders. He entered through the window to search and found a photo of Wei Ruolai and Wei Ruochuan together. Only then did he realize they were biological brothers. Wei Ruolai came home after work. Aunt Zhou asked him about the acquisition of Tongshang Bank and also asked him to help her relative promote office supplies.

Wei Ruolai was not in the mood for this and quickly sent her away with a few words. Wei Ruolai returned to his room. Li Chengda was waiting for him in the room. Wei Ruolai saw that the room had been ransacked and became wary of Li Chengda. Li Chengda proactively admitted that he was a Communist Party member and asked Wei Ruolai about Wei Ruochuan's whereabouts.

Wei Ruolai claimed he didn't know anything, so Li Chengda revealed Wei Ruochuan's true identity and told Wei Ruolai to inform Wei Ruochuan to relocate as soon as possible. Wei Ruolai used the excuse that he couldn't contact Wei Ruochuan. Li Chengda didn't ask further and left in a hurry. A Wen came to bring food to Wei Ruolai. He brushed past Li Chengda and asked Wei Ruolai about his situation. Wei Ruolai answered truthfully.

A Wen was worried that Wei Ruolai would be implicated and advised him to be careful in his actions from now on. Lin Qiaosong had been waiting for Li Chengda at the alley entrance. Li Chengda did not find any clues in Wei Ruolai's room, only finding out that Wei Ruolai and Wei Ruochuan were biological brothers.

Lin Qiaosong was very surprised and told Li Chengda to try to gain Wei Ruolai's trust and find out from him who the contact person was. Wei Ruolai went to work and home every day as usual. He discovered that there were many strangers ambushing in the bank and felt uneasy in his heart. Shen Tunan came to Qibao Street to rent a house. Aunt Zhou rented him a large house. Uncle recognized Shen Tunan, who was his student.

Uncle guessed that he came to inquire about Wei Ruolai's background. He vouched for Wei Ruolai and detailed his family situation. Biaozi came to the bank's archives to check Wei Ruolai's information. Xu Nuo had already replaced Wei Ruolai's file beforehand. Today was the graduation exam. Wei Ruolai calmly finished answering all the questions. Secretary Huang handed the exam papers to the assistant managers for grading and then handed the grade sheet to Shen Tunan.

Episode 7 Recap

Wei Ruolai's exam results were not ideal. Secretary Huang Congyun seized the opportunity to propose replacing Wei Ruolai and letting Shen Tunan choose an assistant from the candidates with excellent results. Shen Tunan wanted to personally test the training results of these candidates, so he asked Secretary Huang to summon the candidates and the chief examining assistants together. Shen Tunan asked the candidates to compete in business ability. Winners would have priority in choosing positions, and losers must obey assignments.

Huang Congyun prided himself on having the strongest business ability, so he proactively volunteered to be the practical examiner, stating that whoever beat him would be the most excellent candidate. The candidates were eager to try. Huang Congyun calmly met the challenge. Only Wang Shanbin drew with Huang Congyun in one round; in the other rounds, Huang Congyun was far ahead. The candidates willingly admitted defeat. Shen Tunan asked Wei Ruolai and Huang Congyun to compete.

Wei Ruolai did not dare to step forward. He was usually very busy and simply couldn't spare much time to attend business training. Shen Tunan was very disappointed in him and severely reprimanded him. He then asked Wei Ruolai and Huang Congyun to compete in daily settlement. The data volume for daily settlement is huge, and it's easy to make mistakes if not careful. These matters are handled by capable managing assistants. Wei Ruolai stepped forward with a heavy heart.

Huang Congyun and Wei Ruolai buried themselves in hard work with the daily lists. When Wei Ruolai was studying, he often helped gangs sort out accounts, so he had developed excellent calculation skills. Wei Ruolai calmly and steadily calculated each account. Huang Congyun finished the settlement one step ahead, but Wei Ruolai closely followed and submitted his answer. He settled a week's accounts in such a short time, and it was accurate and without errors. Everyone present was amazed.

Huang Congyun did not believe Wei Ruolai could complete the calculation of such a large amount of data. He suspected Wei Ruolai had settled it beforehand and firmly insisted that he cheated. Shen Tunan stepped forward to help Wei Ruolai out of the predicament, admitting his result was real and allowing him to choose his position first. Wei Ruolai insisted on staying to be Shen Tunan's assistant. The candidates applauded together to congratulate Wei Ruolai.

Huang Congyun felt indignant in his heart. Shen Tunan saw that Huang Congyun had an opinion about Wei Ruolai. Huang Congyun felt that Wei Ruolai had been distracted lately. Shen Tunan also felt the same and sent him to investigate Wei Ruolai's background. Wei Ruolai returned to Qibao Street after work. From afar, he saw Li Chengda being chased. He was severely injured and desperately escaped the encirclement, asking Wei Ruolai for help. Wei Ruolai bandaged Li Chengda's wound.

Li Chengda boasted about his revolutionary determination and asked Wei Ruolai about Wei Ruochuan's whereabouts. Wei Ruolai was deceived by him and truthfully told him the news of Wei Ruochuan's sacrifice. Wei Ruolai took Li Chengda to Wei Ruochuan's grave. Li Chengda kowtowed to Wei Ruochuan, expressing his sincere respect to him and swearing to avenge Wei Ruochuan. Li Chengda seized the opportunity to inquire about what Wei Ruochuan had left behind before his death.

Wei Ruolai admitted Wei Ruochuan had left twenty gold bars. Li Chengda repeatedly claimed he would hand them over to the organization. Wei Ruolai agreed to give him Wei Ruochuan's seal. Wei Ruolai took Wei Ruochuan's seal after work and went out. A Wen hurried to find Wei Ruolai. He found out that Wei Ruochuan had been to Rixin Bookstore before his death. Wei Ruolai was anxious to see Li Chengda, so he got on a tram.

Suddenly, he found someone was following him. He immediately jumped off the tram and left, going through a lot of trouble to get rid of the tail. He went directly to Rixin Bookstore and suddenly saw Li Chengda returning in a rickshaw. He quickly hid and left. Wei Ruolai came to the post office and called the police to report Rixin Bookstore for selling banned books related to Soviet Russia, suspecting them of collaborating with Communists.

He then hid to observe the situation. The police rushed to the scene upon hearing the news to seal the bookstore. Li Chengda gave them a few silver dollars and then called the detectives from the investigation team to testify for him. Only then did the police leave. Wei Ruolai personally witnessed Li Chengda colluding with the investigation team and guessed he had betrayed. Wei Ruolai didn't know what to do next.

Huang Congyun went to the school to visit and investigate. He did not find Wei Ruolai collaborating with Communists and immediately reported to Shen Tunan. Xu Nuo set up a fortune-telling stall on the street. Shen Jinzhen came to meet him. Xu Nuo found out that Wei Ruochuan had sacrificed and that he was Wei Ruolai's older brother. Shen Jinzhen was very self-reproachful, feeling that she had not protected Wei Ruochuan well, which led to him being brutally murdered.

Xu Nuo personally saw Li Chengda using a ruse to gain Wei Ruolai's trust. Wei Ruolai was preparing to hand over the gold bars left by Wei Ruochuan to Li Chengda. Xu Nuo wanted to personally go and stop Wei Ruolai. He reminded Shen Jinzhen to be careful everywhere so as not to be discovered by Lin Qiaosong. Lin Qiaosong came to the bookstore to find Li Chengda and asked him about the progress of the matter.

Li Chengda concealed the matter of Wei Ruochuan leaving gold bars, saying he decided to see Wei Ruolai again tonight. Lin Qiaosong believed him and asked him to join the investigation team. Li Chengda was flattered. Wei Ruolai didn't know what to do next. He called A Wen to the riverside and told him about the twenty gold bars left by Wei Ruochuan and Li Chengda's betrayal. Wei Ruolai suspected Li Chengda wanted to take the gold bars for himself. A Wen thought for a moment, took out an iron rod from the car, and left.

Episode 8 Recap

A Wen learned that Li Chengda was coming tonight to get the safe key and seal from Wei Ruolai, intending to take the box of gold bars for himself. He picked up an iron rod, intending to kill Li Chengda and have Wei Ruolai escape with the gold bars. Wei Ruolai desperately stopped A Wen, explaining that Li Chengda and the investigation team had set a trap for him to fall into.

He didn't dare go home, and even less would he let A Wen take the risk. Wei Ruolai swore to fulfill Wei Ruochuan's last wish and hand over the gold bars to the contact person. A Wen worried about Wei Ruolai's safety and advised him to give the gold bars to Li Chengda. Wei Ruolai did not want to go against Wei Ruochuan's last wish. Wei Ruolai returned home very late.

Xu Nuo stopped him downstairs and made contact with Wei Ruolai using a secret code. He introduced himself as Wei Ruochuan's party introducer. Wei Ruolai was half-skeptical of him. Xu Nuo didn't have time to explain so much. He clearly stated that Li Chengda was a traitor and that Wei Ruochuan had sacrificed because of a traitor's betrayal. He told Wei Ruolai to give the safe key and seal to Li Chengda.

Wei Ruolai returned to his room, where Li Chengda had been waiting for a long time. Wei Ruolai handed over Wei Ruochuan's seal and the deposit slip to him. Li Chengda was overjoyed and quickly said goodbye to Wei Ruolai before leaving. Wei Ruolai lay in bed tossing and turning, reviewing all the events that had happened over the past two days. Xu Nuo guessed that the investigation team would ambush Li Chengda at the bank.

If Li Chengda tried to keep the gold bars for himself, he would definitely be caught. Xu Nuo would then find a way to get the gold bars back. Xu Nuo swore to avenge Wei Ruochuan. Wei Ruolai took out a photo of himself and Wei Ruochuan and prayed that Xu Nuo could retrieve the gold bars to avenge Wei Ruochuan, otherwise he would personally kill the traitor Li Chengda.

Early in the morning, Li Chengda came to the bank disguised, used Wei Ruochuan's key and seal to retrieve the box of gold bars, and then quietly left. Biaozi led his men to stake out the entrance of Rixin Bookstore, but they didn't see Li Chengda appear. He realized the situation was bad and rushed into the bookstore to inquire. Only then did he find out that Li Chengda had left early in the morning.

He hurried back to report to Lin Qiaosong. Lin Qiaosong sent Biaozi to the train station and the pier to intercept Li Chengda, and also sent people to the bookstore to inquire about Li Chengda's whereabouts. Biaozi learned from a bookstore clerk that Li Chengda had bought a ticket to Hong Kong. He immediately informed Lin Qiaosong. Lin Qiaosong personally led his men to the pier. They conducted a thorough search of the ship but did not find Li Chengda.

Li Chengda did not take a large ship to Hong Kong at all. He found a small boat, and the boatman was only responsible for taking him to Zhoushan. Li Chengda was very dissatisfied. Just as he was about to leave, he was shot and killed by Xu Nuo. Xu Nuo took the box of gold bars. Xu Nuo returned to his residence. Shen Jinzhen brought him a bowl of wontons.

Xu Nuo greatly appreciated Shen Tunan's vision for the bank's development and asked Shen Jinzhen to find a way to get Shen Tunan's work plan. Shen Tunan would never neglect his work for family matters. Shen Jinzhen wanted to find a breakthrough through Wei Ruolai. Early in the morning, Lin Qiaosong came to the Central Bank to complain to Shen Tunan and Deng Ze, insisting that Wei Ruolai was collaborating with the Communists. Shen Tunan immediately called Wei Ruolai in.

Wei Ruolai admitted that Wei Ruochuan had given him a box of gold bars before his death, but he had given the safe key and seal to Li Chengda. Furthermore, he didn't know beforehand that Wei Ruochuan was a Communist. Not only did he call to report Li Chengda, but he also wrote a letter of surrender and sent it to the investigation team. Lin Qiaosong sent Biaozi back to check, and they quickly found the letter.

Biaozi brought Wei Ruolai's letter of surrender. Shen Tunan vouched for Wei Ruolai, and his attitude was firm. Lin Qiaosong couldn't find evidence of Wei Ruolai collaborating with the Communists, so he had to leave dejectedly. Shen Tunan complained that Wei Ruolai shouldn't have kept secrets from him. Wei Ruolai knew nothing about what Wei Ruochuan had done.

He didn't understand politics, he just felt that the current KMT government was too corrupt, that wealth was only in the hands of a few people, and that the common people were struggling to survive. Shen Tunan swore to change this situation, and Wei Ruolai was willing to follow him. Xu Nuo used the twenty gold bars to rescue eight arrested comrades from the French Concession, and then escorted them out of Shanghai.

Only then did Xu Nuo leave with peace of mind. Lin Qiaosong learned about this when it was too late, and he pounded his chest and stamped his feet in anger. Shen Tunan called Mr. Song to apply for customs tariff reform. Mr. Song advised him to give up as soon as possible, as it would anger many prominent figures. Shen Tunan was willing to take all responsibility, and only then did Mr.

Song reluctantly agree, appointing him as the Central Bank's plenipotentiary representative to lead the recovery of customs tariff custody rights. Kang Shaojie learned that Lin Qiaosong had recently failed repeatedly. He lost his temper at him, and even beat him severely in front of Biaozi and others, leaving him bruised all over. Lin Qiaosong didn't want Biaozi and the others to see his miserable state, so he forcefully drove them away.

Shen Tunan decided to carry out the customs tariff reform with a strong hand. He did not want to implicate his family, so he asked his wife Su Cishu to take their daughter Xiao Yu'er back to her hometown to visit her Fourth Uncle. Su Cishu saw that Shen Tunan had something on his mind and insisted on staying to accompany Shen Tunan.

Episode 9 Recap

Lin Qiaosong and the singer Song Meijuan were old lovers. Song Meijuan saw him beaten black and blue and advised him to resign from the investigation team and start a small business. Lin Qiaosong was unwilling to live a mediocre life and was determined to get promoted, get rich, and make a name for himself. Song Meijuan was helpless. Mr.

Song, the Minister of Finance of the Nanjing government, appointed Shen Tunan as the Central Bank's plenipotentiary agent, fully responsible for the reform of customs tariff custody rights. Shen Tunan made careful arrangements, having Wei Ruolai memorize the detailed information of banking tycoons and business celebrities and having Huang Congyun stay at the bank to deal with the bosses who came to cause trouble. Huang Congyun and Wei Ruolai were prepared to charge into battle at any time.

After the Commercial Bank was acquired, Yu Shiqing recommended Zhang Mingquan to be the manager at HSBC Bank. Zhang Mingquan saw the letter of appointment issued by the Ministry of Finance and immediately called Yu Shiqing for help. The customs tariff custody right is the killer move to control the national treasury. Back then, Yuan Shikai used the custody right to borrow a huge deposit from foreign banks that was guaranteed against drought and flood.

If Shen Tunan took back the custody right, they wouldn't be able to borrow money using the custody right. This would cut off their financial lifeline and also harm the interests of foreign businessmen. Yu Shiqing was also helpless and told Zhang Mingquan to fight Shen Tunan to the end. Students took to the streets to protest against the Central Bank's betrayal, corruption, and incompetence.

People who didn't know the truth were incited by others to smash things outside the Central Bank. Police heard the news and rushed to maintain order. Shen Tunan burned his bridges, determined to fight the corrupt forces to the end. He worried about his family's safety and sent people to protect his wife and child 24 hours a day. Zhang Mingquan brought people to the Central Bank to cause trouble, clamoring to settle accounts with Shen Tunan.

Huang Congyun was neither servile nor overbearing and skillfully dealt with them. Zhang Mingquan was relentless, shouting loudly in the bank. Huang Congyun snatched his gun and fired a warning shot, having the police forcibly take Zhang Mingquan away. Shen Tunan took Wei Ruolai to visit Uncle Jiang, a major shareholder of Ningbo Bank. Wei Ruolai detailed the benefits of customs tariff reform for businesses and people's livelihoods.

Uncle Jiang was moved by Wei Ruolai's words and agreed to cast a vote for Shen Tunan. He proposed one condition: he hoped Mr. Song would give him a guarantee that the government would not impose burdens on them in the future and didn't want to become a tool of war. Shen Tunan promised to report to Mr. Song. Shen Tunan was full of praise for Wei Ruolai's performance today. Uncle Jiang's influence in the business world cannot be underestimated.

Shen Tunan wanted to take him to meet Yu Shiqing. Wei Ruolai knew that Yu Shiqing would not be easy to deal with. He came overnight to find the boss of the Axe Gang, Qian Shaoliang, to borrow a gun. The Axe Gang never uses guns, so he gave Wei Ruolai an axe for self-defense. Wei Ruolai politely declined. Wei Ruolai saw Zhang Mingquan going to a nightclub on his way home.

Remembering that Zhang Mingquan had once pointed a gun at his head, Wei Ruolai wanted to seek revenge on him. Shen Tunan got off work and went home. Su Cishu wanted to take him to a banquet. Yu Shiqing's wife is a film industry boss. She had just gotten a script and felt that Su Cishu was very suitable for the role of the female lead. Shen Tunan suspected that Yu Shiqing and his wife's motives were not pure.

Su Cishu wanted to go and investigate personally. Zhang Mingquan came to the nightclub to drown his sorrows in drink. He immediately took a liking to Song Meijuan. Ignoring the manager Liang Ma's dissuasion, he pulled Song Meijuan to drink with him. Song Meijuan kept pouring him drinks. Zhang Mingquan quickly got drunk. He went to the restroom and kept throwing up violently.

Wei Ruolai followed Zhang Mingquan to the restroom, knocked him out from behind, and took his gun and pocket watch, creating the illusion of robbery for money. Wei Ruolai came out of the nightclub, kept the gun with him, and threw the pocket watch into a trash can. The pocket watch was picked up by a homeless man. Qian Shaoliang happened to pass by in a car and voluntarily gave Wei Ruolai a ride home.

Shen Tunan accompanied Su Cishu to the Yu family banquet. Madam Yu pulled Su Cishu aside to talk about the script. Yu Shiqing called Shen Tunan aside, desperately tried to win him over, and even brought up Mr. Song. Shen Tunan promised to think about it carefully before saying anything. Liang Ma called Lin Qiaosong to complain. Lin Qiaosong learned that Zhang Mingquan was harassing Song Meijuan. He immediately came to the nightclub to find Song Meijuan.

When he learned that Zhang Mingquan was in the restroom, he went to find Zhang Mingquan to assert his authority. Upon entering, he saw Zhang Mingquan knocked out. He quietly closed the door and left.

Episode 10 Recap

Shen Tunan's customs reform damaged the interests of major compradores and foreign businessmen. Shen Tunan worked hard in various ways. Yu Shiqing obstructed him from behind. Shen Tunan ultimately received less than half of the support votes. Wei Ruolai and Huang Congyun worried for him, but Shen Tunan was fearless, vowing to fight these corrupt forces to the end. Zhang Mingquan prepared a generous gift to ask Kang Shaojie for help in catching the robber.

Kang Shaojie agreed to cooperate with Lin Qiaosong to investigate the matter. Lin Qiaosong hated Zhang Mingquan deeply, but pretended to be calm, asked him for details about the robbery, and promised to recover his wallet and gun as soon as possible. Su Cishu went to the film crew for an audition. The director was very picky with her. Suddenly, a group of people rushed in and beat the director up.

The director was so scared he repeatedly begged for mercy and agreed to let Su Cishu play the female lead. Madam Yu had been waiting outside for Su Cishu. When she learned that Su Cishu successfully got the female lead role, she invited her for tea. Shen Tunan listed the opponents and analyzed them one by one. He felt the outlook was not optimistic. He decided to open a breach with the foreigners.

However, foreigners are the vested interests of the current customs tariffs. Wei Ruolai worried they would not support Shen Tunan, and with Zhang Mingquan and Yu Shiqing obstructing from within, he broke out in a sweat for Shen Tunan. Yu Shiqing called Shen Tunan to issue an ultimatum, telling him to reply to the shareholders of Xinya Department Store as soon as possible. Shen Tunan had Huang Congyun answer the phone. Huang Congyun lied that Shen Tunan was not there.

Yu Shiqing was so angry he gnashed his teeth and told Zhang Mingquan to send someone to eliminate Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan worried that Yu Shiqing might harm Su Cishu and her daughter. He immediately called the Palace Hotel where Su Cishu was auditioning. Shen Tunan got off work and went home. Shen Jinzhen fully supported his customs reform. Su Cishu came home very late. Madam Yu brought gifts for everyone.

Shen Jinzhen gave Shen Tunan a bulletproof vest and told him to wear it every day. Zhang Mingquan found several assassins and set up ambushes on the four routes Shen Tunan often took. Today was the day for the democratic vote on Shen Tunan's customs reform. Representatives from major Chinese and foreign banks and bosses from various chambers of commerce came to attend. Huang Congyun drove Shen Tunan to the bank early in the morning.

Halfway there, a car accident occurred ahead. Shen Tunan told Huang Congyun to turn around and take another road. Someone drove behind them, tailing them. Huang Congyun sped up and drove forward. When he learned that Shen Tunan was not wearing the bulletproof vest, he couldn't help but complain about him. Zhang Mingquan took the lead in causing trouble. Others stood up one after another to protest. Deng Ze sought help from Uncle Jiang, but Uncle Jiang was also helpless.

Yu Shiqing incited everyone to oppose Shen Tunan. Wei Ruolai rushed onto the stage to speak for Shen Tunan. Zhang Mingquan protested strongly. Wei Ruolai's attitude was firm and unquestionable. He took out a blank piece of paper and pretended it was a speech draft. Wei Ruolai remembered that Shen Tunan had once said that only by protecting the interests of foreign banks in China could they gain their support.

Wei Ruolai listed one by one the impact of customs reform on the development of China's trade, as well as its great benefits to the interests of countries like Britain, the United States, and Russia. They were moved by Wei Ruolai's speech and applauded together, cheering for him. Yu Shiqing publicly challenged Wei Ruolai. Shen Tunan, wounded, rushed over and briefly recounted the attack he suffered on the way. Everyone present voted.

Finally, Shen Tunan received seventy-six votes of support, and the customs reform proposal was passed by a majority vote. Shen Tunan fainted on the ground due to severe injuries. Wei Ruolai, Huang Congyun, and others took him to the hospital. Su Cishu went to the film crew to shoot. Shen Jinzhen visited the film crew. Madam Yu suddenly called Su Cishu and told her that Shen Tunan had been shot and injured.

Su Cishu immediately took Shen Jinzhen to the hospital. She guessed that the mastermind was Yu Shiqing.

Episode 11 Recap

Su Cishu and Shen Jinzhen rushed to the hospital. Wei Ruolai, Deng Ze, Huang Congyun, and others were outside the emergency room. The medical staff did their best to rescue him, and Shen Tunan finally turned the corner and was out of danger. He was still in a coma due to excessive blood loss. The doctor suggested a blood transfusion. Shen Jinzhen voluntarily offered to donate blood for him.

Su Cishu knew that Shen Jinzhen was severely anemic and worried that her body couldn't handle it. Wei Ruolai didn't know his blood type, so he immediately went to get tested and found out he had O type blood. After donating a little blood to Shen Tunan, Shen Jinzhen's face turned pale and she broke out in a cold sweat. The doctor forcibly stopped her.

Wei Ruolai was willing to donate blood for Shen Tunan, so the doctor began to draw his blood. Su Cishu stayed by Shen Tunan's side every step of the way. Shen Tunan finally woke up. Su Cishu told him to rest well and not worry about work matters anymore. Thanks to the unremitting efforts of Shen Tunan, Wei Ruolai, and Huang Congyun, the Central Bank finally reclaimed the customs tariff custody right.

Wei Ruolai felt deeply relieved when he saw the news about the customs reform published in the newspaper. Shen Jinzhen came to the hospital to visit Shen Tunan. She saw Wei Ruolai downstairs and thanked him for donating blood to Shen Tunan. Wei Ruolai was willing to work for Shen Tunan wholeheartedly; he knew that what Shen Tunan was doing was a great deed beneficial to the country and the people. In fact, Shen Tunan's gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

He had exhausted himself trying to reclaim the customs tariff custody right, but with little effect. When he was rushing to the bank, he was being pursued and was forced to shoot himself to get injured. He knew that Kang Shaojie had a long-term suite at the Cathay Hotel, so he booked a room there in advance, hung a red flag inside, and then reported to Kang Shaojie that there were Communists in the hotel.

Kang Shaojie sent Lin Qiaosong and his men to stake out that room. Shen Tunan hid directly in that room. The assassins hired by Zhang Mingquan arrived shortly after. Lin Qiaosong mistakenly thought they were Communists and wildly shot at them. The assassins suffered heavy casualties, and Lin Qiaosong took the only survivor back for interrogation. In his desperation, Shen Tunan used a self-inflicted injury scheme to gain the support of most people.

Huang Congyun advised him not to gamble with his life again. Shen Tunan told him to keep this matter a secret from Wei Ruolai. He felt it wasn't secure enough and wanted to reclaim the customs tariff custody right as soon as possible, preferably by having Chiang Kai-shek personally finalize the matter at this time. Shen Tunan asked Huang Congyun to find a way to make this incident widely known.

Huang Congyun immediately went to contact the "Nanjing Daily" to report on Shen Tunan being attacked. Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen came to visit Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan highly praised Wei Ruolai's speech at the voting meeting. He also asked Shen Jinzhen to take Wei Ruolai out to eat to thank them both for saving his life. Shen Jinzhen took Wei Ruolai to a high-end Western restaurant and ordered a large table of dishes to treat him.

Lin Qiaosong came to the hospital to see Shen Tunan. Through various visits and investigations, he suspected that Shen Tunan's injury was self-inflicted. Shen Tunan smiled but said nothing. Lin Qiaosong was frustrated under Kang Shaojie and asked Shen Tunan to help him find a good position with Mr. Song. Shen Tunan readily agreed and also gave him some pointers, hinting that the mastermind behind this shooting was Yu Shiqing.

When Zhang Mingquan heard that the assassin had been arrested, he worried about being implicated and immediately went to Yu Shiqing for help. Yu Shiqing knew that assassinating Shen Tunan would anger the Nanjing government, so he did his best to distance himself from Zhang Mingquan and told him to look out for himself. Zhang Mingquan was so scared he knelt down and begged for mercy. Yu Shiqing suggested that he bribe the assassin.

Shen Jinzhen invited a violinist to add atmosphere. She and Wei Ruolai drank and talked, finding the conversation increasingly stimulating. Li Chengda had a rare right ventricular injury. He survived after being shot, but was in a deep coma due to excessive blood loss. When Lin Qiaosong heard about this, he rushed to the ward immediately. He suspected that Li Chengda was faking his coma, so he burned his arm with a cigarette butt. Li Chengda did not move.

Lin Qiaosong asked the doctor to save Li Chengda at all costs. After the meal, Shen Jinzhen played a "Requiem". Wei Ruolai couldn't help but think of his deceased brother Wei Ruochuan, and his heart was filled with mixed emotions. Shen Jinzhen kindly advised him and explained that Wei Ruochuan's death was heavier than Mount Tai. Kang Shaojie brought his men to arrest Zhang Mingquan.

Zhang Mingquan offered him a large sum of money as a bribe, but Kang Shaojie didn't accept it. Yu Shiqing stepped forward to plead for Zhang Mingquan. Kang Shaojie agreed to spare Zhang Mingquan, only asking Yu Shiqing to help introduce him to the eldest Miss Song. Yu Shiqing happily agreed and asked Kang Shaojie to provide convenience for his opium business. The two immediately hit it off. Lin Qiaosong severely tortured the assassin, forcing him to reveal the mastermind.

Kang Shaojie called Lin Qiaosong out, sent people to silence the assassin, and pushed all the blame onto Lin Qiaosong, insisting that the assassin committed suicide out of fear of punishment. Lin Qiaosong wanted to find a forensic doctor to perform an autopsy, but Kang Shaojie firmly disagreed and yelled at him. Shen Jinzhen learned from Wei Ruolai that Shen Tunan's next step was to acquire Xingxia Bank. She immediately reported this to Xu Nuo.

The organization was also preparing to take action against Xingxia Bank. Xu Nuo sent Shen Jinzhen to closely monitor Shen Tunan's every move.

Episode 12 Recap

Lin Qiaosong knew that the assassination of Shen Tunan was no small matter, and the Nanjing government attached great importance to it. The only living witness had died right under his nose, making him inescapable of blame. He begged Kang Shaojie for a way out. Kang Shaojie knew that he had served in Nanjing before and had many connections. After weighing the pros and cons, Kang Shaojie reluctantly agreed.

Yu Shiqing and Zhang Mingquan hosted a banquet for Kang Shaojie to thank him for silencing the witness and destroying the evidence. When Shen Tunan learned of this, he guessed that Yu Shiqing was behind it. He vowed to fight Yu Shiqing to the end and was discharged and went home before fully recovering from his injury. Su Cishu fussed over him and quickly prepared hot wontons for him.

Lin Qiaosong was vexed and pulled Wen Biao to drink away his sorrows. Wen Biao also saw that Yu Shiqing had bribed Kang Shaojie to silence the assassin, but dared not express his anger. Lin Qiaosong vented all the frustration that had built up in his heart for many years. Shen Jinzhen complained that Shen Tunan didn't stay in the hospital to recuperate properly. Shen Tunan wanted to come back to deal with Yu Shiqing.

Shen Jinzhen seized the opportunity to suggest that he acquire Yu Shiqing's Xingxia Bank. Yu Shiqing had been entrenched in Shanghai for many years and had great influence. Only by finding his weakness could they win. Shen Jinzhen had a flash of inspiration and came up with a good idea. She sneaked into Xingxia Bank overnight, found important documents in the safe, photographed them on the spot, and lent them to Xu Nuo.

After recovering from his injury, Shen Tunan returned to work at the Central Bank. Deng Ze received orders from Mr. Song. He led all the employees to welcome him at the entrance and also conveyed Chiang Kai-shek's appointment of Shen Tunan as a Director of the Central Bank. Wei Ruolai worked overtime day and night to collect information on Xingxia Bank and also monitored the trend of Xingxia Bank in the stock market.

He quickly found a way to bring down Xingxia Bank. He proposed to Shen Tunan to take down Xingxia Bank in one go, but Huang Congyun strongly objected. Shen Tunan sent him away. Wei Ruolai vowed to bring down Xingxia Bank within two weeks. Shen Tunan couldn't refuse him and agreed to let him try. Wei Ruolai arrived at the securities market early in the morning. He met Yu Shiqing and Zhang Mingquan at the entrance.

Wei Ruolai took the opportunity to humiliate Zhang Mingquan, who was so angry he gritted his teeth. As soon as the stock market opened, Wei Ruolai bought shares of Xingxia Bank. Huang Congyun arrived shortly after and stayed by Wei Ruolai's side the entire time. Deng Ze was worried that Wei Ruolai was no match for Yu Shiqing and advised Shen Tunan not to act impulsively. Shen Tunan wanted to give Wei Ruolai a chance to prove himself.

Immediately after, he called Mr. Song's secretary. Wei Ruolai bought a large amount of Xingxia Bank shares, and the stock price plummeted. Huang Congyun advised Wei Ruolai not to underestimate Yu Shiqing, or he would lose everything. Wei Ruolai had already made thorough preparations. He instructed his broker to continue buying Xingxia Bank shares. Yu Shiqing injected a large amount of capital to save the market, and the price of Xingxia Bank shares began to rise slowly.

Wei Ruolai continued to follow, and the stock price surged. Wei Ruolai guessed that Yu Shiqing had invested a large amount of capital and told his broker to sell the Xingxia Bank shares. Yu Shiqing took all of them. The price of Xingxia Bank shares stabilized. Wei Ruolai had originally planned to short Xingxia Bank shares, but Yu Shiqing's full counterattack had stabilized the market. Shen Tunan arrived in time.

He took over all the shares and went directly to negotiate with Yu Shiqing. Yu Shiqing threatened to utterly defeat Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan remained composed and told him to pay for his actions. Yu Shiqing suddenly received a call from the Xingxia Bank manager, learning that Central Bank staff had completely taken over Xingxia Bank. Yu Shiqing was instantly stunned.

Shen Tunan exposed Yu Shiqing's crimes face-to-face: using Xingxia Bank for financial fraud, smuggling large quantities of goods, and even providing financial support for the espionage activities of Western powers. Yu Shiqing had no choice but to admit defeat, yet he threatened to fight Shen Tunan to the end. Wei Ruolai witnessed Shen Tunan turning the tide and felt ashamed of his own inadequacy.

He was curious how Shen Tunan could have obtained confidential information about Xingxia Bank in such a short time. Huang Congyun received a roll of film on which an account book was photographed. It contained all of Yu Shiqing's criminal evidence. He immediately handed it to Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan was worried there might be a trick, and only after multiple verifications did he dare to use it to accuse Yu Shiqing. Wei Ruolai couldn't guess who provided the film.

As the Spring Festival approached, Shen Tunan and Deng Ze took a group photo with all the employees as a memento. Shen Tunan placed high hopes on them, wishing for them all to become pillars of the nation. Shen Jinzhen provided Shen Tunan with important information, secretly helping Shen Tunan take down Xingxia Bank. Xu Nuo praised her highly and asked her to obtain Xingxia Bank client information and hand it over to the organization as soon as possible.

Shen Tunan brought Wei Ruolai to Xu Nuo's tailor shop to customize a suit. Shen Jinzhen hid in the back room and dared not show her face. Wei Ruolai felt that Xu Nuo's voice was very familiar but couldn't recall where he had heard it. Wei Ruolai suddenly remembered that Xu Nuo and Wei Ruochuan were comrades-in-arms. He lied and claimed he had seen him at Shen Tunan's family banquet. Shen Tunan didn't ask further.

He helped Wei Ruolai pick out a suit and several pairs of shoes before leaving satisfied. Seeing Xu Nuo, Wei Ruolai was reminded of his deceased brother. He remained silent throughout the journey. Shen Tunan noticed he had something on his mind. Wei Ruolai tried his best to hide it. Shen Tunan thought his monthly salary of fifteen yuan wasn't enough, so he immediately raised it to fifty yuan on the spot. Wei Ruolai was overjoyed.

Episode 13 Recap

Since working at the Central Bank, Wei Ruolai has been diligent and responsible, especially during this tariff reform where he turned the tide in a critical moment and made great contributions. Shen Tunan is very optimistic about him and encourages him to work hard, believing he will achieve great success. Shen Tunan casually mentioned going home for the New Year.

There was fighting in Wei Ruolai's hometown, Ji'an, Jiangxi, so he wrote to tell his father he would not be returning home. Shen Tunan invited Wei Ruolai to his home for the New Year, and Wei Ruolai readily agreed. In the blink of an eye, it was Lunar New Year's Eve. Every household hung lanterns and decorations, and it was exceptionally lively. Grandpa wrote Spring Festival couplets for every family.

Aunt Zhou invited the neighbors to have the New Year's Eve dinner together and specially arranged a big surprise for Wei Ruolai. Wei Ruolai specifically changed into his newly bought suit. He and the neighbors clinked glasses. Aunt Zhou specifically called over her niece, Fengju, and tried her best to set up Wei Ruolai with Fengju. Wei Ruolai lied, claiming he had a childhood engagement and that he and his fiancée had a very good relationship.

Fengju advised him to break up with his fiancée. Wei Ruolai made various excuses to evade. He asked Awen to keep Fengju occupied and slipped away from Qibao Street in the chaos to rush to Shen Tunan's home. Mother Liang asked Song Meijuan to perform on stage. Song Meijuan refused, citing feeling unwell. Lin Qiaosong arrived shortly after to help Song Meijuan out and also gave her a music box as a New Year's gift. Song Meijuan loved it.

She spent the good night with Lin Qiaosong. Song Meijuan couldn't help but think of her brother who had been separated for many years. Lin Qiaosong promised to help search for him. As long as her brother was still alive, he would find a way to reunite them, even if he was at the ends of the earth. Biaozi rushed to find Lin Qiaosong. He had found the robber who robbed Zhang Mingquan.

Without a word, Lin Qiaosong took him to arrest the person. Shen Tunan personally cooked the New Year's Eve dinner. Shen Jinzhen chatted with Su Cishu. Xiaoyuer was playing and laughing nearby. She was curious how Su Cishu fell in love with Shen Tunan. Su Cishu then recounted her love story with Shen Tunan. Their families were old acquaintances, and they grew up together as childhood sweethearts. After Shen Tunan grew up, he took Shen Jinzhen to study in Germany.

Su Cishu, in a fit of anger, broke off their engagement, then came to Shanghai to make a living and eventually became a small actress. After Shen Tunan returned to China, he came to find Su Cishu and surprised her repeatedly, only then did Su Cishu and Shen Tunan mend their relationship. Wei Ruolai came to visit Shen Tunan's home. Shen Tunan and his wife warmly welcomed his arrival.

Shen Tunan felt that the suit made by Xu Nuo suited him very well. Shen Jinzhen's eyes suddenly lit up, and she continuously praised Wei Ruolai. A homeless man went to a watch shop to sell a pocket watch. Biaozi recognized it as the one stolen from Zhang Mingquan and immediately apprehended him on the spot. Lin Qiaosong interrogated the homeless man severely. He was so scared that he loudly protested his innocence.

He had personally seen a young man throw the pocket watch into a trash can. Because it was dark, he couldn't see the young man's appearance clearly, but he clearly remembered the young man leaving in the car of Axe Gang leader Qian Shaoliang. Lin Qiaosong immediately called Qian Shaoliang and found out that the young man was Wei Ruolai. Wei Ruolai had dinner with Shen Tunan's family. Xiaoyuer kept calling Wei Ruolai 'uncle-in-law'. Wei Ruolai blushed profusely.

Su Cishu seized the opportunity to set them up together. Shen Jinzhen was also not reserved and, emboldened by the wine, called Wei Ruolai 'uncle-in-law'. Lin Qiaosong reported to Kang Shaojie overnight. Kang Shaojie ordered him to take people to Shen Tunan's house to arrest Wei Ruolai and also called Yu Shiqing to share the good news. After several rounds of drinks, firecrackers were going off outside. Wei Ruolai felt a bit homesick.

He stood by the window, gazing into the distance. Shen Tunan saw what was on his mind and advised him to pursue his ambitions in his current position, so that the country could eliminate war sooner and be built better and better. Wei Ruolai benefited greatly from this. Shen Jinzhen and Su Cishu brought Xiaoyuer to the balcony, and Xiaoyuer made a wish.

Lin Qiaosong led his men to break into Shen Tunan's house to arrest Wei Ruolai and take him to the detective team. Shen Tunan desperately tried to defend Wei Ruolai. Lin Qiaosong had already investigated thoroughly and also searched his house, finding Zhang Mingquan's gun. Furthermore, there were Wei Ruolai's fingerprints on the pocket watch. Lin Qiaosong charged Wei Ruolai with collaborating with the communists. Wei Ruolai's desperate defense was useless.

Shen Tunan was helpless and could only watch as Lin Qiaosong took Wei Ruolai away. Shen Jinzhen begged Shen Tunan to step in and save Wei Ruolai, but Shen Tunan was also powerless. Lin Qiaosong wanted to make a name for himself with this case. He conducted a surprise interrogation of Wei Ruolai overnight. Wei Ruolai remained silent. He ordered Wei Ruolai to be tortured severely.

Episode 14 Recap

Wei Ruolai was beaten all over his body. He remained silent the entire time. Lin Qiaosong tortured him in every possible way, charging him with collaborating with the communists. Wei Ruolai refused to admit it. Lin Qiaosong was worried that he wouldn't be able to account for it if he died, so he used both tough and gentle tactics, forcing him to frame Shen Tunan for collaborating with the communists. Wei Ruolai swore he would die before yielding.

Lin Qiaosong subjected him to extreme torture, and Wei Ruolai fainted from the pain. Yu Shiqing asked Kang Shaojie to use Wei Ruolai's case to completely bring down Shen Tunan, pushing all the charges onto Shen Tunan and confirming his crime of collaborating with the communists. Kang Shaojie readily agreed. Newspapers reported on Wei Ruolai robbing Zhang Mingquan and also leveled groundless charges against Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan didn't want to cause trouble for Mr.

Song, so he decided to bear it himself. Kang Shaojie personally led men to seal off the Central Bank, allowed the investigation team to enter, and suspended Shen Tunan's position. Shen Jinzhen went to see Xu Nuo. Xu Nuo conveyed instructions from higher-ups to her, asking her to find a way to rescue Wei Ruolai. With no other options, Shen Tunan had to call Mr.

Song for help, repeatedly emphasizing that Wei Ruolai was not a communist and that Wei Ruolai stole Zhang Mingquan's gun to help him avenge a personal grievance. Mr. Song knew this was a serious matter, and he advised Shen Tunan to quickly distance himself from Wei Ruolai. Su Cishu played mahjong with Yu Shiqing's wife. At the mahjong table, she brought up Shen Tunan's matter to Mrs. Yu. Mrs. Yu was worried about being implicated and refused to help directly.

Su Cishu clearly stated that Shen Tunan was wronged, swore to make the person who framed him pay the price, and then slammed the door and left. Yu Shiqing was elected as a director of the Central Bank. He couldn't wait to come to the Central Bank to take office, deliberately showing off in front of Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan ignored him. Kang Shaojie sent people to seize Shen Tunan's car.

Deng Ze didn't believe Shen Tunan was collaborating with the communists and proactively lent his car to him. Shen Tunan came to the prison to see Wei Ruolai. He had already notified Director Wu beforehand, but Director Wu had already slipped away. Shen Tunan could only leave disappointed. The investigation team conducted a thorough examination of the Central Bank and found no problems with Shen Tunan. Yu Shiqing was very dissatisfied and told Kang Shaojie to target Wei Ruolai.

Lin Qiaosong used all kinds of torture, but Wei Ruolai did not reveal a single word. Yu Shiqing suggested injecting Wei Ruolai with barbiturates. Lin Qiaosong personally injected the liquid into Wei Ruolai's body. Wei Ruolai quickly became disoriented. Lin Qiaosong took the opportunity to induce Wei Ruolai to frame Shen Tunan for collaborating with the communists, claiming Shen Tunan instructed him to rob Zhang Mingquan, kill Li Chengda and steal the gold.

Wei Ruolai suddenly woke up and strongly denied it. Lin Qiaosong wouldn't give up and continued to mislead him. Wei Ruolai denied it repeatedly. Lin Qiaosong relentlessly pressed him. Wei Ruolai fainted from overthinking. Lin Qiaosong was so angry he gritted his teeth. As soon as Shen Tunan returned home, he shut himself in his room, neither eating nor drinking. Shen Jinzhen kindly advised Shen Tunan.

She believed Wei Ruolai was not the murderer and asked Shen Tunan to find the person who killed Li Chengda as soon as possible to clear Wei Ruolai's name. It was inconvenient for Shen Tunan to step forward himself, so he went to Deng Ze for help investigating the real killer. Deng Ze didn't dare offend Yu Shiqing. Shen Tunan promised to find Mr. Song for support. Shen Jinzhen proactively called Lin Qiaosong and invited him for dinner.

Lin Qiaosong guessed she wanted to inquire about Wei Ruolai's situation and, after much consideration, decided to attend the appointment. Shen Tunan saw Lin Qiaosong leave the detective team, so he asked Director Wu to help him go to the prison to see Wei Ruolai. As soon as they met, Lin Qiaosong stated Shen Jinzhen's intention. Shen Jinzhen didn't hide it either.

She pretended to be indifferent about Wei Ruolai, only curious why Lin Qiaosong wanted to plot against Shen Tunan. Lin Qiaosong suspected Shen Tunan of collaborating with the communists. Shen Jinzhen retorted sarcastically that his mentor was a communist, so he also had grounds for suspicion of collaborating with the communists. Lin Qiaosong personally killed his mentor and arrested his mentor's entire family, which was why he kept his public office. Shen Jinzhen sneered at Lin Qiaosong.

Shen Tunan came to the prison and saw Wei Ruolai beaten black and blue. He was heartbroken. Shen Tunan confirmed again if he had killed Li Chengda. Wei Ruolai denied it repeatedly. He only stole Zhang Mingquan's gun. To repay Shen Tunan's kindness of recognizing his talent, Wei Ruolai would not say anything detrimental to Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan was determined to rescue Wei Ruolai.

Episode 15 Recap

The case of Wei Ruolai being suspected of collaborating with the communists caused a great sensation in society. Public opinion continued to ferment, bringing a great impact on the work of the Central Bank and the Nanjing government. The Nanjing government specially dispatched Mingda, Director of Chiang Kai-shek's attendant's office, to Shanghai to handle this case. Mingda dared not neglect the matter.

He convened Deng Ze from the Central Bank Discipline Inspection Department, Kang Shaojie, and Lin Qiaosong, as well as third-party firearms expert William, to form a special investigation team. Shen Jinzhen attended the case analysis meeting as William's translator. Deng Ze specifically proposed that the Central Bank Discipline Inspection Department should participate in every investigation. Lin Qiaosong strongly protested.

He knew that Deng Ze had a very good personal relationship with Shen Tunan and was worried that Deng Ze would protect and cover for Shen Tunan. Deng Ze stated on the spot that he would handle it impartially and retorted sarcastically to Lin Qiaosong. Kang Shaojie heard that Shen Jinzhen and Deng Ze recommended William to join the special investigation team.

He dispatched Lin Qiaosong to find William's weakness as soon as possible, use every means to bribe William, and solidify the charge of Shen Tunan collaborating with the communists. Biaozi took out the bullet from Li Chengda's body and immediately handed it to Lin Qiaosong. Lin Qiaosong used the pistol Wei Ruolai stole from Zhang Mingquan to kill a death row inmate, took the bullet from his body as evidence, and framed Wei Ruolai for shooting and killing Li Chengda.

Lin Qiaosong brutally tortured Wei Ruolai, beating him all over his body, and then locked him in prison. The prison warden Jiang Huhao forced Wei Ruolai to massage his feet. Wei Ruolai had no choice but to comply. Jiang Huhao was furious when he heard that Wei Ruolai had worked at the Central Bank. With a command, the inmates punched and kicked Wei Ruolai. It turned out that before being imprisoned, Jiang Huhao was a mine manager.

He bought stocks of Xingxia Bank and Tongshang Bank, but lost everything. He deeply hated the Central Bank's manipulation of stock prices and ordered the inmates to beat Wei Ruolai again. Wei Ruolai was beaten unconscious. Li Chengda remained unconscious due to intracranial hemorrhage. Lin Qiaosong forced the doctor to perform brain surgery on him. The doctor was not confident and dared not do it. Lin Qiaosong severely reprimanded him. Wei Ruolai woke up groggily.

Suffering from extreme hunger, he struggled to get up and wanted a drink of water. Jiang Huhao did not allow him to drink water, telling him to drink urine. Wei Ruolai was tortured within an inch of his life, and the inmates felt pity for him. Jiang Huhao suppressed his anger and recounted the tragic experiences of every inmate in the same cell who had lost their fortunes due to stock trading.

Only then did Wei Ruolai realize that they had been arrested a few days ago for causing trouble in front of the city government building. He expressed deep sympathy for them. The special investigation team interrogated Wei Ruolai. Shen Jinzhen saw Wei Ruolai covered in injuries and sighed with emotion. Lin Qiaosong asked Wei Ruolai a series of questions. Wei Ruolai admitted that he robbed Zhang Mingquan's pistol and that the matter had nothing to do with Shen Tunan.

He did not kill Li Chengda and said he couldn't even use a gun. Lin Qiaosong became angry and pressed Wei Ruolai step by step. William suggested letting Wei Ruolai try shooting at the firing range. Deng Ze also agreed with William's decision. Lin Qiaosong had no choice but to send someone to take Wei Ruolai to the firing range. Wei Ruolai watched six shots being fired in a row, four of which hit the target.

William found that Wei Ruolai's grip on the gun was incorrect. Lin Qiaosong suspected that Wei Ruolai was pretending not to know how to use a gun. William performed a technical data analysis. The wound on Li Chengda's chest was very professional and definitely not done by Wei Ruolai. Lin Qiaosong was unconvinced. William suggested investigating the crime scene. Lin Qiaosong had to make a concession. The prison guard delivered newspapers to the inmates on time every day.

Jiang Huhao and the inmates in the same cell had all bought Hengmei stock, hoping to make a comeback with this stock. Wei Ruolai advised them to sell it as soon as possible, otherwise, they would lose everything. Jiang Huhao didn't believe him. Wei Ruolai then analyzed the trend of this stock for them. He explained it in simple terms.

Jiang Huhao told him that if he could recommend three stocks within five days, he would consider him a friend, otherwise, he would not be lenient. William investigated the scene. The footprints did not match Wei Ruolai's. He decided to reinvestigate the case. Lin Qiaosong, worried about being exposed, obstructed him in every way. Deng Ze threatened him by mentioning Mingda. Lin Qiaosong produced the bullet head retrieved from Li Chengda's body.

Shen Jinzhen carefully examined the scene and found a shell casing in the grass. She immediately gave it to Deng Ze and William. Wei Ruolai recommended three very inactive stocks, guaranteeing a return within five days and a doubling of value within two months. Jiang Huhao and the others were half-believing, but still bought the three stocks. From that day on, the three stocks Wei Ruolai recommended continuously dropped for four days. Jiang Huhao and the others panicked.

Wei Ruolai saw that the market maker was washing out retail investors and advised them to wait and see. Just as Wei Ruolai had expected, the three stocks surged starting from the fifth day. Jiang Huhao and the others were utterly impressed with Wei Ruolai. They even gave him the best bunk and followed his every word. Lin Qiaosong handed the bullet taken from the death row inmate to the special investigation team.

Shen Jinzhen took out the shell casing found at the scene for comparison. It was not the same model at all. Furthermore, the bloodstain on the bullet Lin Qiaosong provided was very fresh and did not match the time when Li Chengda was shot. Shen Jinzhen strongly requested a forensic pathologist's intervention and also demanded a blood type cross-match between the bloodstain on the bullet and Li Chengda's blood. Lin Qiaosong was instantly dumbfounded.

He claimed he had taken the wrong bullet and quickly went to exchange it for the one retrieved from Li Chengda's body. William found that the bullet in Li Chengda's body did not match the model of Wei Ruolai's gun. That bullet and the shell casing picked up by Shen Jinzhen were of the same model. This eliminated Wei Ruolai's suspicion of shooting Li Chengda.

Lin Qiaosong had forged evidence, intending to bring down both Wei Ruolai and Shen Tunan, but failed completely. Lin Qiaosong worried that Shen Tunan would take the opportunity to retaliate. He desperately tried to win over Shen Jinzhen, wanting to make a deal with her, and even threatened Wei Ruolai's life. Shen Jinzhen sneered at Lin Qiaosong. Lin Qiaosong knew that this case had alarmed the high-level officials in the Nanjing government and did not dare to act rashly.

The three stocks that Wei Ruolai recommended kept rising. Jiang Huhao and the inmates treated him like a god. Wei Ruolai advised them not to trade stocks anymore after getting out of prison. He said that the current stock market was a game for capitalists, and ordinary people couldn't afford to play it.

Episode 16 Recap

Lin Qiaosong came to the prison cell and announced that Wei Ruolai was acquitted and released. Wei Ruolai thought he would never get out in this life, but he didn't expect to escape death. Lin Qiaosong prepared a table of food for him, and Wei Ruolai ate heartily. Lin Qiaosong desperately tried to please Wei Ruolai, hoping Wei Ruolai wouldn't resent him. Wei Ruolai warned him not to harm Shen Tunan again, otherwise he would fight him to the end.

Wei Ruolai was cleared of suspicion. Zhang Mingquan, Yu Shiqing, and Kang Shaojie were at a loss, feeling anxious. They had originally planned to use this case to bring down Shen Tunan and completely destroy the tariff reform he was promoting, but failed at the last hurdle. Kang Shaojie sent Lin Qiaosong to bribe William, but he didn't even get to see William.

Yu Shiqing knew this case had alarmed the high-level officials in the Nanjing government, and he was also helpless. Shen Tunan brought the Central Bank's legal advisor Yao Gengming to confront Kang Shaojie. Yao Gengming brought the case file for Wei Ruolai's case and ordered Kang Shaojie to release the person as soon as possible. Kang Shaojie made various excuses to evade. Shen Tunan had already obtained the special investigation team's final verdict that Wei Ruolai was acquitted and released.

Shen Tunan gave him an ultimatum, threatening to hold a press conference to expose their crimes. Kang Shaojie had no choice but to make concessions. Wei Ruolai was acquitted and released, and Shen Tunan and Shen Jinzhen came to the prison to pick him up, wanting to welcome him back and cleanse his bad luck. Unexpectedly, Lin Qiaosong had treated him to a big meal. Shen Tunan vowed to get revenge on those who framed him.

He took Wei Ruolai to the hospital to treat his injuries and reminded Wei Ruolai to protect himself well in the future and not to act on his own. Su Cishu hosted a banquet to entertain Wei Ruolai. Xiao Yuer called Wei Ruolai "uncle-in-law", and Wei Ruolai blushed profusely with embarrassment. Shen Tunan reminded Shen Jinzhen to drink less, lest she get drunk and flip the table. Su Cishu quickly helped Shen Jinzhen out of the situation.

Wei Ruolai saw their family laughing and talking, and felt deeply warm in his heart. After the meal, Shen Jinzhen played a piece of music, and Wei Ruolai was deeply attracted by her music. Shen Jinzhen was very concerned about Wei Ruolai's injuries. Learning that Wei Ruolai's new suit had been torn to shreds by torture instruments, she promised to take him to get a few more suits made. Kang Shaojie was completely defeated in Wei Ruolai's case.

He vented all his anger on Lin Qiaosong. He violently beat Lin Qiaosong, complaining that he shouldn't have handed over the bullet. Lin Qiaosong, instead, reminded him to look out for himself, otherwise, he would die a miserable death. Wei Ruolai returned to Qibao Street. The neighbors, having believed the newspaper reports, thought Wei Ruolai had committed murder and colluded with communists, and shunned him. Wen Youtian saw him return safely and excitedly hugged him tightly, not letting go.

Aunt Zhou asked Wei Ruolai to step over a brazier to drive away all bad luck. Wei Ruolai felt warm in his heart. Neighbors who didn't know the truth wanted to drive Wei Ruolai away, fearing they would be implicated by him. Aunt Zhou believed in Wei Ruolai's character and even considered him a national hero. Aunt Zhou drove away the heckling neighbors and invited Wei Ruolai into her home.

Taking the opportunity, she raised his rent by two yuan, leaving Wei Ruolai not knowing whether to laugh or cry. Shen Tunan stayed up late working on the bank audit report. Shen Jinzhen asked him for the military industry client information of Xingxia Bank. Shen Tunan refused, claiming these were confidential. Shen Jinzhen used the excuse of developing business for the military factory. Shen Tunan couldn't refuse her and had to hand over the client information to her.

Wei Ruolai's injuries gradually improved. He went to work at the bank early in the morning, full of energy. His colleagues were discussing him among themselves. Huang Congyun advised Wei Ruolai to leave the Central Bank voluntarily and stop causing trouble for Shen Tunan. Deng Ze wanted to fire Wei Ruolai. Shen Tunan desperately fought for Wei Ruolai.

If only Wei Ruolai had pushed the blame onto him, he could have avoided severe torture, but he swore he would not surrender. Shen Tunan insisted on keeping Wei Ruolai, and Deng Ze was helpless. Wei Ruolai wanted to hear Shen Tunan dismiss him in person; otherwise, he would absolutely not leave. Shen Tunan came downstairs and heard Wei Ruolai's words. He publicly announced that he would take Wei Ruolai as his last disciple. His colleagues were stunned and speechless.

Wei Ruolai immediately bowed to acknowledge him as his master. Shen Tunan gave the pen he carried with him to Wei Ruolai. Everyone applauded for Wei Ruolai. Huang Congyun had followed Shen Tunan for many years and had always dreamed of becoming Shen Tunan's disciple, but he didn't expect Wei Ruolai to get there first, and he felt indignant in his heart. Shen Jinzhen handed the military industry client information of Xingxia Bank to Xu Nuo.

She saw a document in Huang Congyun's office. The German company Rheinmetall had a massive volume of tungsten ore transactions. This company's funds were transferred to Nanjing through Xingxia Bank. The person in charge was named Hans, who was an old friend of Shen Tunan. The more Lin Qiaosong thought about it, the more he felt something was off about Shen Jinzhen. Both times they arrested underground party contacts, Shen Jinzhen was present.

This time, she spared no effort to help Wei Ruolai get acquitted. Lin Qiaosong decided to open a gap through Li Chengda. He immediately rushed to the hospital and urged the doctor to perform a craniotomy on Li Chengda as soon as possible. The doctor, already terrified by him, had contacted a neurosurgery expert to operate on Li Chengda, only then did Lin Qiaosong stop. Xu Nuo submitted the client information provided by Shen Jinzhen to the organization.

The higher authorities quickly got in touch with Rheinmetall. They were willing to cooperate with the Soviet Area base on tungsten ore business. Shen Jinzhen gave Hans's information to Xu Nuo and suggested doing a negotiation rehearsal beforehand. Wei Ruolai was ordered to take over the tariff accounts of HSBC. Zhang Mingquan refused to cooperate. Wei Ruolai warned him to watch himself, otherwise he could forget about having a foothold in Shanghai's banking industry in the future.

Zhang Mingquan had no choice but to yield. Mr. Song received reliable intelligence that Hans had come to Shanghai to discuss tungsten ore business with the Communist Party. He called and dispatched Shen Tunan to negotiate with Hans. He also instructed him to inform Kang Shaojie to arrest the Communist Party member who came for the business talk. Shen Tunan brought Wei Ruolai to meet Kang Shaojie. He conveyed Mr. Song's order to him.

Lin Qiaosong found out the identity of the Communist Party's negotiation representative, Lei Ming, and wanted to arrest him at the Ritsha Hotel. Wei Ruolai suggested stopping the cooperation first and then arresting the person. Shen Tunan also had this idea. Lin Qiaosong was eager to gain merit and wanted to arrest the person first. Shen Tunan clearly stated that the tungsten ore business brought considerable income to the national government every year, and once the negotiation failed, Kang Shaojie's life would be difficult to save, let alone a mere Lin Qiaosong.

Episode 17 Recap

Lei Ming, in disguise, came to the clothing store to meet Xu Nuo. They hadn't seen each other for many years, and their excitement was palpable. Ignoring pleasantries, they began discussing the negotiation with Hans. Xu Nuo was surprised that the organization sent Lei Ming as the negotiation representative and couldn't help but worry for him.

Lei Ming also knew that this trip was fraught with danger; he was the only person in the base who knew German and was skilled in foreign trade. Xu Nuo handed Lei Ming the information on German industrialist Hans that Shen Jinzhen had collected, so Lei Ming could be prepared. Shen Tunan visited Hans under the guise of Lei Ming. Hans happily came to meet Lei Ming, but unexpectedly it was Shen Tunan, which made him unhappy.

Hans clearly stated that the purpose of this trip to Shanghai was to terminate the contract with the Nanjing government. The Nanjing government had repeatedly failed to abide by the contract and could not supply goods in time. He had found a reliable partner and even produced an official letter written by the German Minister to China, stating the termination of all military cooperation with the Nationalist government.

Shen Tunan knew that the recovery of tariff custody rights would significantly impact the interests of foreign businesses. He would try to find a way to compensate them. Moreover, two-thirds of China's tungsten ore was in Gannan, which was a base area for the Communist Party. The Nanjing government had sent troops to encircle and suppress them twice, both ending in failure. However, Hans was not convinced.

If the Nanjing government did not resume supplying goods, they would have to pay Rheinmetall Company a penalty of 1. 3 million marks for breach of contract, and he would use this money to purchase tungsten ore from Gannan. Shen Tunan revealed to Hans that Chiang Kai-shek had sent 300,000 troops and air force units to encircle and suppress the Communist base area in Gannan. It would be impossible for the Communist side to deliver goods on time.

Shen Tunan threatened to cooperate with Britain and France. Hans refused to budge, and the negotiation stalled. Shen Tunan hosted a banquet to welcome Hans and also invited Wei Ruolai to join. Shen Tunan and Hans were not only classmates but also good friends who could talk about anything when they were in Germany. The three of them clinked glasses. Shen Tunan, fueled by alcohol, discussed cooperation matters with Hans.

Hans agreed not to purchase tungsten ore from the Communist Party for the time being, but the penalty could not be reduced by a single cent. Shen Tunan could only negotiate for 300,000. Hans agreed to go back and mediate with Rheinmetall Company and the German Minister. He had only one condition: a drinking contest with Shen Tunan. Lin Qiaosong led his men to stake out the entrance of the Ritsha Hotel.

Suddenly, they heard the sound of artillery fire in the distance. They immediately got out of the car to investigate. It turned out to be a child setting off firecrackers. They chased the child away. Xu Nuo was hiding nearby and saw everything clearly. Wei Ruolai drank on behalf of Shen Tunan. He and Hans were evenly matched in drinking, enjoying themselves thoroughly, which attracted many onlookers. Lin Qiaosong hurried over upon hearing the commotion to watch.

He couldn't help but recall the fond memories of competing in drinking with his classmates during his time at the military academy. He swore to catch the Communist Party negotiation representative and live up to the training he received from his school and instructors. Wei Ruolai and Hans competed glass for glass. Shen Tunan cheered Wei Ruolai on. Wei Ruolai eventually won against Hans, but he himself also passed out drunk. Shen Tunan took Wei Ruolai home.

He accidentally saw the wall covered with newspaper clippings about him. Shen Tunan didn't expect Wei Ruolai to consider him an idol and was deeply moved. Xu Nuo discovered that Lin Qiaosong had surrounded the Ritsha Hotel with his men, making it impossible for Lei Ming to meet Hans. He went to discuss countermeasures with Shen Jinzhen and Lei Ming. Lei Ming was unwilling to give up Hans, such a big client.

The tungsten ore business was related to the survival plan of tens of thousands of Red Army soldiers in the base area. Shen Jinzhen told Lei Ming to use a fake name to open a room on the same floor as Hans at the Ritsha Hotel. She would go to Zhabei to find someone to help. Lin Qiaosong sent people to guard the entrance of Hans's room. Lei Ming opened a room on the same floor.

Shen Jinzhen set a fire in the adjacent room. When the reconnaissance team saw the thick smoke, they desperately hammered on the door. Shen Jinzhen arrived in time and killed him. Lei Ming took the opportunity to come out of the room and knock on Hans's door. Hans was very surprised; he was waiting for a reply from Nanjing.

Lei Ming saw that Hans was not sincerely intending to cooperate with him, but merely using this to pressure the Nanjing government into shipping goods quickly. Hans reminded Lei Ming to be careful of Chiang Kai-shek sending troops for encirclement and suppression. Lin Qiaosong heard movement behind the building and immediately led his men to rush over. He found that the deceased was Lei Ming. He sent someone to take Lei Ming to the hospital.

As a result, they discovered that the person was an imposter. Lin Qiaosong then realized he had been tricked and immediately rushed back to the Ritsha Hotel. Lei Ming regretted not being able to cooperate with Hans this time. He expressed sufficient sincerity. Hans revealed a piece of news to him: General Li Jitang secretly acquired tungsten ore for export trade, and he was not controlled by the Nationalist government.

Lei Ming did not reach an agreement with Hans this time, but he obtained more important intelligence. As soon as Lei Ming left, Lin Qiaosong rushed back to the Ritsha Hotel with his men. He found the room empty and had no choice but to go all out and interrogate Liu Si, the imposter of Lei Ming. Liu Si was a beggar from Zhabei. He was knocked unconscious after leaving an opium den last night.

When he woke up, he was already in the hotel and didn't know what had happened. Xu Nuo saw Lei Ming off by boat overnight. Lei Ming asked him to convey his gratitude to Shen Jinzhen. Liu Si, the imposter of Lei Ming, was arranged by Shen Jinzhen. Shen Tunan put the tungsten ore business on the Central Bank's work agenda and assigned this important task to Wei Ruolai, asking Huang Congyun to assist him.

Shen Tunan wanted Wei Ruolai to attend a meeting in Nanjing. Huang Congyun was very unhappy about this and targeted Wei Ruolai in every way. Wei Ruolai saw in the newspaper that the Ministry of Transportation workers were on strike. He worried that Shen Jinzhen might run into the parade on her way home from work and hurried to report to Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan told Wei Ruolai to use his car to pick Shen Jinzhen up from work.

Wei Ruolai went to pick up Shen Jinzhen. On the way, he saw police beating striking workers. Shen Jinzhen couldn't stand it and got out of the car to reason with the police. Wei Ruolai forcibly pulled Shen Jinzhen back into the car. Shen Jinzhen returned home furiously. Shen Tunan advised her not to be nosy. Shen Jinzhen argued heatedly with Shen Tunan, and they ended up parting on bad terms.

Wei Ruolai suggested that Shen Tunan take Huang Congyun to Nanjing. Shen Tunan knew he wanted to help Huang Congyun and agreed to let him stay. After Jiang Huhao and his brothers were released, they became rickshaw pullers. A-Wen also joined them. After participating in the workers' parade, they went drinking. Wei Ruolai ran into them on his way home from work and drank with them.

Episode 18 Recap

Wei Ruolai and Jiang Huhao and his group drank together. It was only then that he learned they had participated in the strike parade and even clashed with the police. The police surrounded the rickshaw pullers' residence overnight. When Jiang Huhao learned about this, he immediately took his brothers back to settle the score with the police without saying a word. Wei Ruolai couldn't persuade Jiang Huhao, so he had to go with them.

Xiaoyuer suddenly had appendicitis and a persistent high fever. The ambulance couldn't get through at all because of the workers' parade. Shen Jinzhen drove Su Cishu and Xiaoyuer to the hospital. The car was stuck in the middle of the parade route and couldn't move. Wei Ruolai saw Shen Jinzhen from afar and asked Jiang Huhao for help. Jiang Huhao found two rickshaws and took Shen Jinzhen, Su Cishu, and Xiaoyuer to the hospital.

The medical staff did their best to save Xiaoyuer. Shen Jinzhen expressed her gratitude to Wei Ruolai. Seeing that Wei Ruolai was against the workers' strike, she explained the significance of the workers rising up to resist. Wei Ruolai was very sympathetic to the plight of Jiang Huhao and others, but he still felt that marching was not the way to solve the problem. Shen Jinzhen was very angry and petulantly ignored him.

The doctor performed craniotomy on Li Chengda, and he finally woke up. When Lin Qiaosong learned about this, he immediately rushed to the ward, eager to know who the murderer was. Li Chengda saw his eagerness to gain merit and demanded ten gold bars. Lin Qiaosong was furious and severely lectured Li Chengda.

Li Chengda just wouldn't budge; not only did he want gold bars, but he also demanded that Kang Shaojie personally come to see him and safely escort him out of Shanghai. Lin Qiaosong gnashed his teeth in anger. Li Chengda kept saying that as long as Lin Qiaosong caught that murderer, he could root out the entire underground party organization in Shanghai. Lin Qiaosong was immediately tempted. Xiaoyuer had her appendix removed.

Shen Jinzhen and Su Cishu took great care of her in the hospital, and her condition gradually improved. Shen Jinzhen went to call Nurse Li to change Xiaoyuer's dressing. When she learned that Nurse Li had given an injection to the patient in Ward 317, Shen Jinzhen went to look for Nurse Li. Nurse Li was giving an injection to Li Chengda in Ward 317. Li Chengda took the opportunity to hold her hostage.

The reconnaissance team outside heard the commotion and rushed in to see what was happening. Li Chengda held one of them hostage, demanding to see Lin Qiaosong. Biaozi rushed over upon hearing the news and forcibly took Li Chengda back to the ward, also sedating him. Shen Jinzhen saw this scene from a distance. She immediately called Xu Nuo to report.

Xu Nuo had seen Li Chengda fall to the ground and die with his own eyes, so he didn't expect him to still be alive. Shen Jinzhen, disguised as a nurse, came to the ward on the floor above 317. She used a rope to enter Li Chengda's ward through the window, first killing the guard, and then smothering Li Chengda with a pillow. Lin Qiaosong came to the ward to see Li Chengda.

Shen Jinzhen quickly escaped by the rope outside the window and quietly returned to Xiaoyuer's ward. Lin Qiaosong saw that Li Chengda was still alive and quickly called for medical staff to rescue him. He sent Biaozi with people to search for the killer. Although Li Chengda was saved, he couldn't speak a word. Lin Qiaosong promised to transfer him to another hospital tomorrow. Lin Qiaosong transferred Li Chengda early in the morning.

Shen Jinzhen and Su Cishu were taking Xiaoyuer for a walk in the courtyard. Lin Qiaosong actively greeted Shen Jinzhen. Li Chengda stared intently at Shen Jinzhen, but he couldn't speak. When Xu Nuo learned about this, he told Shen Jinzhen to transfer quickly to avoid revealing her identity. Shen Jinzhen hurried home to pack her luggage. Shen Jinzhen was packing her luggage, preparing to leave. Shen Tunan happened to call home.

Su Cishu asked Shen Jinzhen to answer the phone. Shen Jinzhen lied and said she was going on a business trip to Suzhou. She reluctantly said goodbye to Shen Tunan on the phone. Lin Qiaosong reported Li Chengda's conditions to Kang Shaojie. Kang Shaojie weighed the pros and cons and reluctantly agreed. He wrote a note and had Lin Qiaosong go to the Central Bank to withdraw ten gold bars.

The reconnaissance team came to the Central Bank to withdraw the gold bars. Wei Ruolai asked them to fill out the purpose as required. They filled in 'intelligence funds'. Wei Ruolai brought out ten gold bars for them to verify. They inadvertently revealed that the gold bars were to be delivered to the Ritsha Hotel. Wei Ruolai immediately became alert. He went directly to the Ritsha Hotel to book a room. From the front desk staff, he learned that the sixth floor was not open to the public, so he chose a room on the fifth floor.

Episode 19 Recap

Wei Ruolai personally saw that Li Chengda was transferred to the Ritsha Hotel. He booked a room in the hotel, but he didn't know which room Li Chengda was staying in, so he called every guest room to confirm. Finally, he heard that Li Chengda was in room 605. Kang Shaojie brought his men to the Ritsha Hotel overnight.

He immediately took out ten gold bars on the spot and forced Li Chengda to reveal the underground party member who tried to kill him. Li Chengda was afraid that Kang Shaojie would silence him after he told the truth, so he insisted on talking to Yu Shiqing. Kang Shaojie had no choice but to dial Yu Shiqing's number. Li Chengda confessed that the person who assassinated him last night was Shen Jinzhen.

Shen Jinzhen is a member of the Anti-Traitor Squad. She has a special fragrance on her, which is a mixed scent of an Italian brand of shampoo and body wash that Mrs. Yu gave to Shen Jinzhen. Li Chengda used to run a spice shop, so he knew about this. Yu Shiqing quickly went to find his wife to verify the situation. Lin Qiaosong also smelled a faint fragrance when he entered Li Chengda's ward last night. Mrs.

Yu had two sets of Italian imported shampoo and body wash in total. She gave one set to Shen Tunan's wife, Su Cishu, and kept one set for herself. Kang Shaojie ordered the arrest of Shen Jinzhen. Li Chengda wanted to leave with the gold bars, but Kang Shaojie said they would talk about it after Shen Jinzhen was caught. Li Chengda had to wait patiently.

Wei Ruolai and Lin Qiaosong took the reconnaissance team to the train station and pier to apprehend Shen Jinzhen. He sweated for Shen Jinzhen. Wei Ruolai secretly eavesdropped on the phone in room 605. Shen Jinzhen was waiting for her train at the station. The station staff suddenly received a notice from the reconnaissance team, asking them to strictly check all passing passengers. The station broadcast announced that the train to Suzhou was delayed.

Shen Jinzhen was uneasy, worrying that the situation might have changed. Kang Shaojie knew that Shen Tunan was backed by Mr. Song, so he dared not provoke Shen Tunan. He ordered his subordinate guarding room 605 to silence Li Chengda. Wei Ruolai heard everything clearly over the phone. Li Chengda knew he was in grave danger. He took the opportunity when the person was not paying attention, snatched his gun, and shot him dead on the spot.

Guests at the Ritsha Hotel heard the gunshots and scattered in panic. Li Chengda took advantage of the chaos to escape with the gold bars. Wei Ruolai saw it all. The train slowly entered the station. As soon as Shen Jinzhen reached the platform, she saw members of the reconnaissance team searching everywhere. Frightened, she quickly hid to the side, trying to get on the train through the rear door. However, she was caught red-handed by Lin Qiaosong.

Shen Jinzhen knew she couldn't get away, so she surrendered. When Kang Shaojie learned that Shen Jinzhen had been arrested, he sent people to search the Shen family's home. He personally went to the prison to interrogate Shen Jinzhen. Kang Shaojie accused Shen Jinzhen of assassinating Li Chengda. Shen Jinzhen pretended to know nothing and tried hard to distance herself from the case. Kang Shaojie pressed her relentlessly. Shen Jinzhen answered fluently, and Kang Shaojie could not find any flaw.

Kang Shaojie used both hard and soft tactics on Shen Jinzhen, even bringing up Shen Tunan. Su Cishu was also threatened with Xiaoyuer's life, making Shen Jinzhen grit her teeth in anger. Lin Qiaosong led his men to conduct a thorough search of the Shen family home, but did not find Shen Jinzhen's gun. He had to leave disappointed.

Su Cishu quickly called the Central Hotel where Shen Tunan was staying in Nanjing, but there was no answer from the room phone. At this time, Shen Tunan was waiting to be summoned at President Chiang's residence. Chiang Kai-shek summoned visiting key officials overnight, so Shen Tunan had to wait patiently. Shen Jinzhen demanded a face-to-face confrontation with Li Chengda. Kang Shaojie had no idea where Li Chengda was.

He advised Shen Jinzhen to admit that she was a Communist Party member and promised lenient treatment for her family. Shen Jinzhen retorted mockingly and righteously reprimanded him for having no principles. Kang Shaojie slammed the door and left in anger. Wei Ruolai called Su Cishu and learned that Shen Jinzhen had been arrested, and the reconnaissance team had searched the Shen family home. Su Cishu had been unable to contact Shen Tunan.

Wei Ruolai called the Nanjing Police Bureau to report the case, falsely claiming that Huang Congyun was going to assassinate Shen Tunan, and asked the police to arrest Huang Congyun at the Central Hotel. Kang Shaojie was worried that Shen Tunan would complain about them to Chiang Kai-shek, so he dared not frame Shen Jinzhen. He immediately sent people to search the entire city for Li Chengda, so that Li Chengda could testify against Shen Jinzhen.

Shen Tunan waited for a long time. Mingda conveyed Chiang Kai-shek's order that all meetings for today were cancelled. Shen Tunan was very disappointed. When Huang Congyun learned that Shen Jinzhen had been arrested, he rushed to inform Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan hurried back to Shanghai overnight. After Shen Tunan returned to Shanghai, Wei Ruolai reported what had happened last night to him. Huang Congyun suggested putting pressure on them by having the arsenal factory step forward.

Workers from the arsenal factory came together to protest at the Garrison Headquarters, strongly demanding the release of Shen Jinzhen. Shen Tunan, accompanied by Huang Congyun and Wei Ruolai, arrived shortly after. Kang Shaojie invited Shen Tunan to his office. Li Chengda identified Shen Jinzhen as a member of the Communist Party's Anti-Traitor Squad. Shen Tunan desperately defended Shen Jinzhen.

Episode 20 Recap

Kang Shaojie insisted that Shen Jinzhen was a Communist Party member. Shen Tunan demanded a face-to-face confrontation with Li Chengda. Kang Shaojie was immediately speechless; he hadn't caught Li Chengda yet. Shen Tunan gave him an ultimatum: if he didn't release Shen Jinzhen, he would publicize Kang Shaojie's and the reconnaissance team's accounts at the Central Bank in the newspapers tomorrow, letting the public see how they were lining their own pockets.

Kang Shaojie was furious, swearing he would shoot Shen Jinzhen. Shen Tunan was enraged, ready to fight Kang Shaojie to the bitter end. Shen Tunan came to the prison to pick up Shen Jinzhen. Without explanation, he pulled her up and took her home. Shen Tunan brought Shen Jinzhen before their parents' spiritual tablets, making her kneel and question her true identity.

Shen Jinzhen clearly stated that her only identity was Shen Tunan's sister; she was not a Communist Party member and did not kill Li Chengda. Kang Shaojie had nowhere to vent his frustration, so he severely whipped Lin Qiaosong again. Lin Qiaosong was beaten black and blue. He insisted that Shen Jinzhen was a Communist Party member and complained that Kang Shaojie shouldn't have released her. Kang Shaojie was even more infuriated.

Unable to find Li Chengda to identify Shen Jinzhen, he could only watch Shen Tunan take her home. Kang Shaojie pushed all the blame onto Lin Qiaosong, suspending him for reflection and confiscating his gun. To help ease the tension between Shen Jinzhen and Shen Tunan, Su Cishu asked Shen Jinzhen to bring fruit to Shen Tunan. Shen Jinzhen heard Shen Tunan talking to Xiaoyuer about her strengths and weaknesses from the doorway.

Feeling a warmth in her heart, Shen Jinzhen placed the fruit plate by the door and quietly left. Lin Qiaosong became more and more angry the more he thought about it. He swore to thoroughly investigate Shen Jinzhen's background. Shen Tunan hosted a family banquet to calm Shen Jinzhen and restore her reputation. Shen Tunan invited newspaper reporters and Shanghai's various celebrities.

Kang Shaojie and Lin Qiaosong were invited to attend the dinner, and Xu Nuo also came to show support. Su Cishu specifically prepared an evening gown for Shen Jinzhen. She didn't care about Shen Jinzhen's identity and was willing to stand with her. Shen Jinzhen was deeply moved. The banquet officially began. Shen Jinzhen, wearing a white long dress, elegantly walked down from upstairs, immediately attracting everyone's attention. Shen Jinzhen publicly thanked Kang Shaojie for clearing her name.

Shen Tunan invited Shen Jinzhen for the first dance. Shen Jinzhen heard that Wei Ruolai had suggested hosting this reception and repeatedly thanked him, only curious how Wei Ruolai knew that Li Chengda wouldn't return. Wei Ruolai made up random excuses to cover it up. It turned out that Wei Ruolai had followed Li Chengda into an alley, ambushed him from behind, and then hanged him. Wei Ruolai sank Li Chengda's body in the river overnight.

Shen Jinzhen saw the wound on Wei Ruolai's hand and guessed that he had killed Li Chengda. Wei Ruolai confessed to this without hesitation. He guessed that Shen Jinzhen was a Communist Party member and reminded her to think carefully before acting in the future. Shen Jinzhen said nothing and quietly walked away. Lin Qiaosong was suspended from duty. Feeling agitated, he drowned his sorrows in alcohol alone at home.

Song Meijuan came to see him, encouraging him not to feel sorry for himself and offering to support him with everything she had to make a comeback. Lin Qiaosong was very dejected. Song Meijuan severely scolded him, and Lin Qiaosong was jolted back to reality. The newspaper's front-page headline reported on Shen Jinzhen's grace at the reception. Xu Nuo worried that it would cause inconvenience for her future work and that Li Chengda might seek revenge.

Shen Jinzhen had no choice but to tell him about Wei Ruolai killing Li Chengda. When Xu Nuo attended the reception at her house, he noticed that Wei Ruolai liked her and told Shen Jinzhen to find an opportunity to cultivate a relationship with him. Wei Ruolai disguised himself and went to the bank to deposit the ten gold bars. Shen Tunan held a regular meeting and publicly read a document.

The CCP had opened a Workers' and Peasants' Bank in Southern Jiangxi. Huang Congyun felt that these bumpkins were insignificant, but Wei Ruolai believed that the Workers' and Peasants' Bank should not be underestimated. The Communist Party had a very solid mass base in Southern Jiangxi. Shen Tunan felt the same way, believing that within three years, the Workers' and Peasants' Bank would be the Central Bank's biggest rival.

Episode 21 Recap

Lin Qiaosong desperately wanted to make a name for himself and achieve success, but things went against his wishes. In the end, Kang Shaojie made him a scapegoat and dismissed him for investigation. He was heartbroken and decided to leave Shanghai, this sad place. So he bought two tickets for Singapore for tomorrow morning, intending to take Song Meijuan with him. Lin Qiaosong took Song Meijuan home to pack. Upon entering, he found Kang Shaojie in his house.

Kang Shaojie asked Lin Qiaosong to stay and be in charge of the opium business, promising him an apartment and generous compensation. Lin Qiaosong knew that Kang Shaojie was ruthless and would turn his back on anyone, so he flatly refused. At Kang Shaojie's command, Wen Biao held Song Meijuan at gunpoint, forcing Lin Qiaosong to stay. Lin Qiaosong firmly refused.

Kang Shaojie then accused Song Meijuan of being a Communist Party member and threatened to shoot her, claiming repeatedly that the opium business was an industry of the high-level Nanjing government officials. Lin Qiaosong did not want to serve the corrupt Nanjing government. Kang Shaojie used both coercion and persuasion on him, and Lin Qiaosong had no choice but to reluctantly agree.

Although Shen Jinzhen swore oaths, Shen Tunan still suspected she was a Communist Party member, but it was inconvenient for him to say so directly. Shen Tunan noticed that Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen got along well, so he asked Wei Ruolai to remind Shen Jinzhen to think carefully before acting and not to bring death upon herself again.

As soon as Wei Ruolai got off work, he went to the arsenal to pick up Shen Jinzhen and wanted to invite her to dinner. Shen Jinzhen was tired of restaurant food and wanted to eat at Wei Ruolai's home. Wei Ruolai took Shen Jinzhen to Qibao Street. The neighbors all thought they were dating and rushed over to watch the excitement. Wei Ruolai personally cooked a few dishes to treat Shen Jinzhen.

Because his cooking skills were poor, the food was difficult to eat. Shen Jinzhen guessed that Wei Ruolai was entrusted by Shen Tunan to persuade her and asked Wei Ruolai for his opinion on the Communist Party. Wei Ruolai only had a limited understanding and had only heard hearsay. Taking Wei Ruolai's brother Wei Ruochuan as an example, Shen Jinzhen briefly explained the essential difference between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang.

Wei Ruolai was not interested in this; he only wanted to follow Shen Tunan to unify finance. Shen Jinzhen advised him not to work for the corrupt Nanjing government anymore. Wei Ruolai remained stubborn and even reminded Shen Jinzhen not to cause trouble for Shen Tunan. Shen Jinzhen was so angry she was speechless. Niu Chunmiao took a train to Shanghai. As soon as she got off the train, she saw a thief stealing a mother and son's wallet.

She calmly retrieved the wallet and returned it to the pair. The thief rushed forward to hit Niu Chunmiao, but she was not afraid. She even called the railway police to threaten him. The thief was so scared he ran away in a panic. Niu Chunmiao was engaged to Wei Ruolai since childhood. She traveled thousands of miles from her hometown in Jiangxi to join Wei Ruolai in Shanghai.

Niu Chunmiao was deeply attracted by the prosperity and liveliness of Shanghai upon her arrival. She went through a lot of trouble to find the Central Bank. Wei Ruolai happened to be coming to work. Niu Chunmiao joyfully cheered and clung tightly to him, refusing to let go. Wei Ruolai quickly took Niu Chunmiao to his office. Niu Chunmiao lied that her father had sent her to Shanghai to marry Wei Ruolai.

Wei Ruolai had already written home to cancel the engagement. Niu Chunmiao flatly refused and cursed Wei Ruolai, calling him a heartless man. Wei Ruolai explained repeatedly, but she did not believe him at all. Wei Ruolai didn't know what to do for a moment, so he took Niu Chunmiao to look for a place to stay. Xu Nuo asked Shen Jinzhen to recruit Wei Ruolai, but Wei Ruolai was stubborn. Shen Jinzhen was helpless and began to back down.

Xu Nuo offered her advice and ideas. Wei Ruolai brought Niu Chunmiao back to Qibao Street. The neighbors talked about them animatedly. Wei Ruolai saw that Niu Chunmiao had run away from home and advised her to return to her hometown as soon as possible. Niu Chunmiao wanted to stay in Shanghai and make a fortune, absolutely refusing to be a burden to Wei Ruolai.

Niu Chunmiao saw a tissue with lipstick in the trash can and guessed that Wei Ruolai had a rich girlfriend. Wei Ruolai didn't want to explain too much. He moved into the rickshaw pullers' dormitory. A-Wen curiously asked about the reason, but Wei Ruolai made up random excuses to cover it up. Wei Ruolai brought Niu Chunmiao breakfast early, along with rouge and powder. Niu Chunmiao ate the meal ravenously.

Niu Chunmiao saw A-Wen when she went out, treated him like a brother, and wanted to take him along to make a fortune. A-Wen couldn't refuse Niu Chunmiao, so he had to accompany her. Niu Chunmiao set up a stall at the alley entrance, using a coin-guessing game to attract many neighbors to watch. Taking the opportunity, she took out the ginger slices she brought from her hometown to sell. Everyone immediately dispersed.

A-Wen lied that Niu Chunmiao was his cousin and called all the neighbors back, even tasting the ginger himself. Aunt Zhou heard the news and rushed over. She tried guessing the coin twice and failed both times. In a fit of anger, she turned to leave. A-Wen persuaded her to come back and buy the ginger slices. Seeing this, the neighbors also scrambled to buy. The large bag of ginger slices Niu Chunmiao brought quickly sold out.

She split half the money with A-Wen and even treated him to a drink. A-Wen was overjoyed and readily agreed to follow Niu Chunmiao from then on.

Episode 22 Recap

Shen Jinzhen came to find Wei Ruolai after work, but he was not home. Niu Chunmiao introduced herself as Wei Ruolai's fiancée and declared her claim to Shen Jinzhen. Shen Jinzhen shook her hand in a very friendly manner. Niu Chunmiao knew that Wei Ruolai did not like her, so she asked Shen Jinzhen for a sum of money and she would give Wei Ruolai up to Shen Jinzhen.

Shen Jinzhen repeatedly explained that she and Wei Ruolai were not a couple. Niu Chunmiao did not believe her at all. She threatened to cause a scene at the Central Bank entrance every day if Shen Jinzhen didn't give her money, thus ruining Wei Ruolai's reputation. Shen Jinzhen didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Niu Chunmiao asked Shen Jinzhen for fifty silver dollars.

Shen Jinzhen was curious why Niu Chunmiao didn't marry Wei Ruolai and suspected there was something wrong with Wei Ruolai. Niu Chunmiao praised Wei Ruolai as filial, smart, and kind. Shen Jinzhen remained skeptical. Niu Chunmiao thought Shen Jinzhen was trying to renege on the deal and finally lowered the price to twenty silver dollars. Shen Jinzhen agreed to give her the money if she explained the reason for not marrying Wei Ruolai.

Wei Ruolai came to work early every day, working overtime to organize the资料 (information/materials) on the CCP's Soviet Area Bank. Shen Tunan invited Wei Ruolai to dinner at his home that evening and promised to give him another book to study carefully. Wei Ruolai went to Shen Tunan's home as soon as he got off work. Su Cishu prepared a large table of dishes to entertain him. Shen Jinzhen and Wei Ruolai were speechless to each other.

Xiaoyuer was curious if the two of them had quarreled. Shen Jinzhen desperately made excuses to cover it up. Shen Tunan asked Wei Ruolai to do a good job of ideological work on Shen Jinzhen and not to rush it. Wei Ruolai also felt that he had spoken too harshly last time. He proactively apologized to Shen Jinzhen. Shen Jinzhen advised him to be kind to Niu Chunmiao. Wei Ruolai wanted to explain his relationship with Niu Chunmiao.

Shen Jinzhen rattled off many embarrassing stories about Wei Ruolai from his childhood. Wei Ruolai was so embarrassed he wished he could disappear. Wei Ruolai angrily went home to confront Niu Chunmiao, complaining that she shouldn't have said bad things about him in front of Shen Jinzhen. Niu Chunmiao retorted against Wei Ruolai and even took out the money she earned to show off. Wei Ruolai saw at a glance that these were fake silver dollars.

Niu Chunmiao was so angry she gritted her teeth. Recently, many fake silver dollars have appeared on the market, causing great trouble to people's lives and work. Shen Tunan also received many reports about fake silver dollars. He called Mr. Song to apply for the establishment of a special committee to investigate the matter. Mr.

Song was worried that the investigation results of the Central Bank would not be convincing, so he asked the police station and the detective team to assist the Central Bank in handling the case. Shen Tunan had no choice but to comply. Kang Shaojie sent Lin Qiaosong to assist Shen Tunan in investigating the fake silver dollars.

Lin Qiaosong did not want to work with Shen Tunan, but Kang Shaojie's attitude was firm and beyond doubt, so he had to obey the order. The police station sent Deputy Director Yu Ziying to participate in the case. Wei Ruolai introduced the situation of the fake silver dollars to them. This batch of fake silver dollars was exquisitely made, used fine materials, and utilized regular mint technology, clearly not the work of a small workshop.

Shen Tunan briefly explained the harm of fake currency to the financial market and Mr. Song's order for them to solve the case within ten days. Yu Ziying concluded that the fake currency factory was not in Shanghai and suggested searching in surrounding counties and cities. Shen Tunan found that this batch of fake currency used discarded molds from the Nanjing Mint. Lin Qiaosong suspected that this was done by the Communist Party to disrupt their financial market.

Shen Tunan felt that the Communist Party would not have such high-end minting technology. He assigned Lin Qiaosong to search in Shanghai and asked Yu Ziying to submit all the clues he had. After the meeting, Lin Qiaosong proactively showed goodwill to Yu Ziying and even brought up Kang Shaojie. Yu Ziying agreed to fully cooperate with his actions.

Wei Ruolai suspected that Yu Ziying knew everything about the fake currency and deliberately pushed the investigation direction to other places, just to conceal the person involved. Wei Ruolai felt that the fake currency factory was in Shanghai, which was convenient for production and saved transportation trouble. Shen Tunan felt the same way. Anyone who could produce fake currency on such a large scale must have immense capability and perhaps had already infiltrated the police station with their network.

He deliberately set the initial investigation direction in Nanjing just to paralyze the other party. Shen Tunan asked Huang Congyun to carefully analyze the materials submitted by Yu Ziying and sent Wei Ruolai to find Shen Jinzhen to melt the fake currency and quickly find out the materials used. Wei Ruolai went to the arsenal to ask Shen Jinzhen for help.

Shen Jinzhen asked people in the smelting department to help test the composition of the fake silver dollars and also found that the latest batch of fake currency was produced last week. Wei Ruolai wanted to hand over the test results to Shen Tunan as soon as possible. Shen Jinzhen reminded him to be careful. Yu Ziying sent people to load all the collected fake currency materials into a car.

He repeatedly instructed the driver, Xu Zhongfeng, and even gave him a pack of cigarettes before leaving. Wei Ruolai personally escorted the car. Xu Zhongfeng chatted with Wei Ruolai while driving. As the car reached an intersection, a large truck suddenly rushed out and overturned the escort vehicle. Xu Zhongfeng and Wei Ruolai were injured and unconscious. Wei Ruolai woke up in a daze. He called out for someone to rescue Xu Zhongfeng.

Suddenly, he saw someone throw a burning cigarette butt into a large pool of gasoline leaking from the car. The car was instantly engulfed by flames. Wei Ruolai rushed forward risking his life to grab a box of materials. The car exploded, and the remaining materials were burned. Xu Zhongfeng was seriously injured and sent to the hospital. Wei Ruolai sat by the roadside, shivering, holding the box of materials. Shen Tunan arrived promptly.

Yu Ziying brought police to investigate the scene. Shen Tunan guessed that he was the mastermind behind this car accident and explosion. He rushed up and punched and kicked him. Yu Ziying pretended to be innocent. Shen Tunan swore to thoroughly investigate the matter and make Yu Ziying face the firing squad. Shen Tunan reported the matter to Mr. Song. Mr. Song reminded him to be extra careful to avoid retaliation. Huang Congyun brought decorators to renovate Shen Tunan's office.

Shen Tunan asked Huang Congyun to put important documents in the inner room and reminded the workers not to touch the things in the inner room. As soon as the workers entered the room, they drew the curtains. Shen Jinzhen came to the hospital to visit Wei Ruolai. She showed concern for him and advised him not to continue investigating the matter. Wei Ruolai insisted that the Communist Party was behind the fake currency.

Shen Jinzhen made a bet with him that even if the fake currency case was investigated to the root, it would inevitably end without resolution. Wei Ruolai didn't believe her. Niu Chunmiao delivered food to Wei Ruolai early in the morning, feeling lucky that she hadn't become a widow. The nurse brought Wei Ruolai's test results, which showed everything was normal.

Wei Ruolai didn't want to hear Niu Chunmiao continue to nag, so he quickly went to handle the discharge procedures. Wei Ruolai reported the situation of the car accident to Shen Tunan. He personally saw someone throw a cigarette butt into the car and was certain that it was deliberate, intended to destroy the investigation materials in the car. Shen Tunan also felt that Yu Ziying was highly suspicious. Huang Congyun thought it was all a coincidence.

Shen Tunan sent him to the newspaper to offer a large reward and mobilize the public to report clues about the fake currency. Wei Ruolai wanted the rickshaw pullers' association to help collect information. Shen Tunan reminded Wei Ruolai to pay attention to his personal safety. Using the convenience of running all over the city, the rickshaw pullers meticulously recorded the instances where they received fake currency from customers.

Citizens actively reported clues about the fake currency to the Central Bank. Shen Tunan, Huang Congyun, and Wei Ruolai worked overtime to compile all this information and quickly locked down the area producing fake currency in Zhabei. Shen Tunan asked Huang Congyun to call the security personnel to go to Zhabei to investigate the case. Lin Qiaosong bribed the decorators to install listening devices in Shen Tunan's office.

He learned from Huang Congyun's phone call that Shen Tunan was going to Zhabei to investigate the fake currency. He got there first and led his men to Zhabei. Shen Tunan, Huang Congyun, and Wei Ruolai led their men to search in Zhabei but found nothing unusual. Lin Qiaosong found a small workshop producing fake currency. A fierce gun battle broke out between the two sides. Shen Tunan and his group immediately rushed over.

There were scattered fake currencies piled up at the scene. Lin Qiaosong wanted to take the two survivors back for interrogation.

Episode 23 Recap

Wei Ruolai searched the fake currency workshop in Zhabei carefully, refusing to let go of any corner. When Shen Tunan called him to leave, Wei Ruolai was still staring thoughtfully at two crucibles used for melting silver. Lin Qiaosong saw all of this. He was worried that Wei Ruolai would find a flaw, so he asked Wen Biao to send someone to keep a close eye on Wei Ruolai and report to him at any time.

The more Wei Ruolai thought about it, the more something felt wrong. With just two small crucibles, it was impossible to produce three thousand silver dollars a day. Wei Ruolai also recalled the strange look in the eyes of the arrested person. He concluded that this was not the fake currency production den. Wei Ruolai ran to a telephone booth overnight to report the matter to Shen Tunan. Wen Biao's subordinate hid nearby and heard everything clearly.

As expected by Wei Ruolai, the real fake currency production site was at the Xieqiao Ironworks. This place was heavily guarded. Lin Qiaosong regularly came here to supervise the work. Because things were tense recently, he had the workers rest during the day and work overtime at night to produce fake currency. A worker, due to family difficulties, stole a few silver dollars and was shot dead on the spot by Lin Qiaosong.

Wen Biao rushed to report to Lin Qiaosong that Wei Ruolai had discovered that was a fake den. Lin Qiaosong sent Wen Biao to personally keep an eye on Wei Ruolai to prevent him from discovering the fake currency factory. Kang Shaojie learned of this matter and severely reprimanded Lin Qiaosong. He gave Lin Qiaosong a death order: kill anyone who approaches the factory. Shen Tunan found Wei Ruolai and Huang Congyun to discuss countermeasures.

Wei Ruolai accidentally discovered that they were being followed. Shen Tunan and Wei Ruolai got off midway, took a rickshaw to Qibao Street, and went directly to Wei Ruolai's rental room. Wen Biao led his men in close pursuit. Huang Congyun told his driver to follow closely behind Wen Biao. Niu Chunmiao rushed home. She enthusiastically took out honey ginger slices for Shen Tunan to taste.

After Shen Tunan ate a slice, Niu Chunmiao went to the kitchen to cook to entertain Shen Tunan. Wen Biao watched downstairs until dark but did not see Shen Tunan and Wei Ruolai come out. They had to withdraw. Huang Congyun followed his car as he left. Niu Chunmiao chatted with Shen Tunan, found him full of righteousness, and thought he was a Red Army soldier. Wei Ruolai tried to stop Niu Chunmiao but it was too late.

Shen Tunan knew that Niu Chunmiao's hometown was a Red Army base, so he inquired about the Red Army from her. Niu Chunmiao, disregarding Wei Ruolai's dissuasion, spoke her true thoughts. She felt that the corrupt Nationalist Party would not last long. Shen Tunan fell into deep thought after hearing her words. Huang Congyun tracked Wen Biao and found the Xieqiao Ironworks. He discovered many hidden sentries were placed around. Huang Congyun immediately reported to Shen Tunan.

He suspected that the ironworks was the real den for fake currency. Shen Tunan did not want to alert the enemy and wanted to ask Mr. Song to send the tax police team to seal the factory. Huang Congyun immediately called Mr. Song. No one answered the phone. Wei Ruolai suspected that Mr. Song was deliberately not answering. Shen Tunan worried that delaying would cause complications and decided to personally lead men to the factory for investigation.

Wei Ruolai suggested asking the rickshaw pullers' association brothers to help provide support. Shen Tunan readily agreed. Shen Tunan led the bank security team to the Xieqiao Ironworks to search the factory. Lin Qiaosong led his men in a desperate resistance, wildly firing at Shen Tunan and his group. Niu Chunmiao and Jiang Huhao arrived in time with the rickshaw pullers to provide support. Niu Chunmiao and Jiang Huhao and others rushed in through the back door amidst the chaos.

They held Lin Qiaosong hostage. Lin Qiaosong had no choice but to let Shen Tunan and his group enter. Shen Tunan entered the fake currency production workshop. It was filled with stacks of shiny silver dollars. Niu Chunmiao was stunned. Huang Congyun discovered a large amount of opium in a back secret room. Shen Tunan ordered all the fake currency and opium to be seized. Yu Ziying arrived subsequently with the police.

He ordered everyone present to be killed without mercy. Shen Tunan realized he wanted to silence witnesses. Niu Chunmiao led them to escape through the back door. The rickshaw puller Erdan was shot dead by stray bullets. Jiang Huhao was so angry he yelled loudly. Shen Jinzhen, hiding on the rooftop of the opposite building, injured Yu Ziying. The police were in chaos. Shen Tunan and Wei Ruolai took advantage of the confusion to lead everyone to withdraw.

The police pursued them relentlessly. Shen Jinzhen opened fire and killed several policemen. Shen Tunan and his group escaped through a hail of bullets. Erdan's family arrived upon hearing the news. Shen Tunan swore he would seek justice for the deceased Erdan. He thanked Jiang Huhao and the others for their strong support. Shen Tunan asked Huang Congyun to quickly develop the photos taken at the scene as evidence. Mr. Song sent Secretary Lu to invite Shen Tunan.

Shen Tunan came to Mr. Song's mansion. Kang Shaojie and Yu Ziying were also invited by Mr. Song. Shen Tunan swore to settle accounts with them. Wei Ruolai took Niu Chunmiao and Jiang Huhao and others to the hospital to get their wounds bandaged. The police arrived shortly after and arrested Jiang Huhao and the others. Wei Ruolai went to Shen Tunan for help. At the entrance, he met Shen Jinzhen.

He smelled gunpowder on Shen Jinzhen and suspected that the sniper was Shen Jinzhen. Shen Jinzhen made various excuses to cover it up. Shen Tunan rushed home afterwards. He was forced to compromise. The fake currency and opium were means for high-level officials in the Nanjing government to accumulate wealth. High-level leaders ordered Shen Tunan to destroy the seized fake currency and opium, and then find two scapegoats.

Shen Tunan also had to hand over all the evidence and materials he possessed. He felt indignant in his heart. Wei Ruolai was unwilling to close the case like this. They had risked their lives to obtain conclusive evidence, and opium and fake currency were the roots of disaster for the country and its people. However, this case involved high-level officials in the Nanjing government, and Shen Tunan was powerless. He advised Wei Ruolai to choose to compromise.

Wei Ruolai and Shen Tunan had a fierce argument when their views clashed. Shen Jinzhen heard Shen Tunan's and Wei Ruolai's conversation and advised Wei Ruolai to face reality. Wei Ruolai left in a huff, slamming the door. Shen Tunan held a press conference. He publicly announced that Lin Qiaosong and police officer Liu Zhixin were the culprits. Yu Ziying slandered the rickshaw pullers for distributing fake currency. Wei Ruolai stepped forward to argue with him.

Shen Tunan loudly stopped Wei Ruolai. Wei Ruolai went onto the stage and reasoned forcefully with Shen Tunan, speaking out against the injustice for the deceased rickshaw puller. Shen Tunan ordered Huang Congyun to take Wei Ruolai down.

Episode 24 Recap

Wei Ruolai caused a scene at the press conference and was taken to the police station. Shen Tunan came to pick him up early in the morning and showed concern for him. Shen Tunan gave a large amount of compensation to the family of the deceased rickshaw puller. Moreover, the reporters at the scene were bribed and would not truthfully report what happened at the press conference. Shen Tunan invited Wei Ruolai for a drink to calm his nerves.

Lin Qiaosong was taken to the police station. He sneered at Shen Tunan's performance at the press conference and also cursed him loudly. Lin Qiaosong advised Wei Ruolai to play it safe, otherwise he would follow in his footsteps. Shen Tunan invited Wei Ruolai to a bar to unwind. Wei Ruolai, emboldened by the alcohol, poured out his grievances to him.

Shen Tunan gently advised him and also opened up to Wei Ruolai, pouring out the dissatisfaction and indignation in his heart. Shen Tunan encouraged Wei Ruolai not to be discouraged, but to completely change the current injustice for the sake of his family and future generations. Shen Jinzhen came to the bar to find Shen Tunan. Seeing Shen Tunan and Wei Ruolai drowning their sorrows in alcohol, she felt quite uneasy.

After drinking, Shen Tunan and Wei Ruolai walked on the street, using songs to express the depression in their hearts. Shen Jinzhen quietly followed behind them. Wen Biao accompanied Song Meijuan to the prison to see Lin Qiaosong. When Song Meijuan saw the once spirited Lin Qiaosong reduced to a prisoner, tears flowed down uncontrollably. Lin Qiaosong was fantasizing about being given important positions after being released from prison. Song Meijuan advised him to give up early.

Lin Qiaosong knew his fate was grim and advised Song Meijuan to find a good man and get married. Song Meijuan insisted on waiting for Lin Qiaosong to get out, swearing that she would only marry him. Lin Qiaosong was so moved that his eyes welled up with tears. Wei Ruolai took out the ten gold bars stored in the bank and rescued Jiang Huhao and others. Jiang Huhao finally understood why people wanted to join the Red Army.

Wei Ruolai fell into deep thought again. Wei Ruolai returned to Qibao Street. Shen Jinzhen was waiting for him at a street corner snack stall and gave him a few copies of Capital (Das Kapital) to cure his emotional distress. Niu Chunmiao was folding paper money for the deceased rickshaw puller. Wei Ruolai folded with her. Niu Chunmiao advised Wei Ruolai to go back to Jiangxi with her. She increasingly hated this place, Shanghai.

The officials here, high and low, were all lying. Wei Ruolai did not want to go back. He had finally managed to get a foothold here and did not want to go back and start over. Wei Ruolai casually opened Capital. He felt his eyes were suddenly opened. From then on, it became unstoppable. He quickly finished reading that book, feeling he had benefited greatly. From that day on, Shen Jinzhen taught Wei Ruolai shooting whenever she had time.

Wei Ruolai quickly mastered the essentials. He hit the target every time. Shen Jinzhen told Wei Ruolai about the process of her joining the party and the beliefs of Communist Party members. Wei Ruolai gained a new understanding of the Red Army and the Communist Party. January 20, 1932.

The Japanese authorities, in order to divert international attention from the September 18th Incident they launched and their invasion of Northeast China, while also plotting to occupy Shanghai, instigated Japanese residents in China to create incidents. War was imminent. Japanese residents in China took to the streets to demonstrate together, demanding the disbandment of anti-Japanese groups. Citizens boycotted Japanese goods. They attacked and injured people. Rickshaw pullers and Japanese residents engaged in fierce clashes.

The police arrived upon hearing the news and arrested the citizens and rickshaw pullers. Shen Tunan returned from a meeting in Nanjing and conveyed the instructions from higher-ups to Deng Ze. The Nanjing government fully accepted the conditions proposed by the Japanese side, and the Japanese side promised a ceasefire. But Shen Tunan still felt that the Japanese army would not stop the war of aggression.

He asked Deng Ze to arrange for people to organize the important bank documents and move to the concessions to work as soon as possible. Shen Tunan asked Wei Ruolai to move out of Qibao Street. Wei Ruolai advised his neighbors to move to the concessions as soon as possible. They were unwilling to leave and had no money to move. The Japanese army launched a frantic bombing of Zhabei district. Qibao Street was instantly engulfed in flames. Wei Ruolai, disregarding the danger, covered the evacuation of his neighbors.

Episode 25 Recap

The Japanese frequently created incidents in Shanghai, and a major war was on the verge of breaking out. Shen Tunan called a meeting of the magnates of the Shanghai Banking Association, ordering them to suspend business indefinitely to resist Japan and also to raise military funds for the Nineteenth Route Army stationed in Shanghai. Yu Shiqing made various excuses to shirk responsibility, believing that the Japanese side would keep their promise not to attack the concessions.

Shen Tunan's attitude was firm and beyond question. The sound of cannons outside boomed loudly, and Yu Shiqing and others trembled with fear. Shen Tunan seized the opportunity to propose that major banks close for three days to protest, making no concessions on the issue of military funds. The Japanese army frantically bombed Zhabei district, causing countless civilian casualties. Wei Ruolai, Aunt Zhou, and Niu Chunmiao rescued the wounded.

A-Wen used a rickshaw to transport the wounded to the hospital, which was already overcrowded. Wei Ruolai wanted to take the surviving neighbors to the concessions to take refuge temporarily, but Aunt Zhou insisted on staying in Qibao Street to help the wounded. Shen Jinzhen brought a large supply of first-aid items and food and personally distributed them to the injured civilians and their families. She gave Wei Ruolai a handgun for self-defense.

Commanders and fighters of the Nineteenth Route Army called on citizens to jointly resist Japan through radio broadcasts. The citizens were filled with indignation, and even the prisoners in jail shared their hatred for the enemy, demanding to go out and resist Japan. Lin Qiaosong applied to participate in the war, and he formed a suicide squad with the prisoners. Wei Ruolai and Shen Tunan arrived at the concessions and felt very uncomfortable seeing the citizens displaced.

Shen Tunan had raised a batch of supplies that he wanted to send to the Nineteenth Route Army, but due to the fierce fighting, they were forced to temporarily remain at the port. Wei Ruolai voluntarily asked to escort the supplies to the front line. Shen Tunan was worried about Wei Ruolai's safety, but Wei Ruolai was determined. He repeatedly gave Wei Ruolai instructions and warnings.

Jiang Huhao heard that Wei Ruolai was going to deliver supplies to the front line, so he brought his rickshaw brothers to help voluntarily. Wei Ruolai was very moved. That night, Wei Ruolai and Jiang Huhao led their brothers to move the supplies out of the concession port and risked their lives to deliver them to the Chinese territory. Halfway there, they encountered Japanese troublemakers, and a fierce fight broke out between the two sides.

Lin Qiaosong arrived in time with members of the suicide squad to provide reinforcements, killing all the Japanese and covering Wei Ruolai and his group as they went to the front line. Aunt Zhou called on the neighbors to wash clothes for the soldiers, and they washed gauze day and night. Niu Chunmiao went around the streets and alleys to raise donations for the Nineteenth Route Army.

Although Shen Tunan traveled around and raised funds from various sources, the funds for the war against Japan were still far from enough. Wei Ruolai suggested issuing war bonds. Shen Tunan thought his idea was good, but the public lacked confidence in the government. The soldiers of the Nineteenth Route Army fought bloody battles and finally drove the Japanese army away. The two sides signed a ceasefire agreement, and the citizens spread the news among themselves.

Shen Tunan gritted his teeth in anger when he saw the humiliating ceasefire agreement that sacrificed national sovereignty. Wei Ruolai felt heartbroken remembering the neighbors who had worked hard and rushed around to resist Japan. The Ministry of Finance issued construction bonds and called on citizens to subscribe, but people were disappointed in the government, and subscribers were few. The Ministry of Finance issued eight million construction bonds to the Central Bank.

Shen Tunan held a mobilization meeting and publicly announced that the construction bonds were guaranteed by official endorsement. He set an example and was the first to subscribe for one hundred thousand, and others responded one after another. Mr. Song highly praised Shen Tunan's approach. Shen Tunan wanted to control the market for the construction bonds, and Mr. Song supported his idea. Wen Biao recorded all the conversations between Shen Tunan and Mr.

Song through a listening device and immediately handed them over to Kang Shaojie. On the first day the construction bonds were issued on the stock market, citizens rushed to buy, and the bond price soared all the way. Shen Tunan saw all this and had Wei Ruolai call the presidents of major banks to have them come to the Central Bank for a meeting in the afternoon. The presidents arrived on time for the meeting. Shen Tunan assigned them tasks.

After the meeting, Zhang Mingquan incited the presidents to sell off the construction bonds. This was carefully arranged by Yu Shiqing, and he bought all the bonds the presidents sold. Aunt Zhou bought two shares of the construction bonds and instantly made thirty yuan. She held a big banquet to celebrate with her neighbors. Jiang Huhao and A-Wen, among others, were also eager to try. Wei Ruolai was very optimistic about the construction bonds and supported them in buying.

Episode 26 Recap

Niu Chunmiao heard that Wei Ruolai supported the neighbors in buying construction bonds. She had traveled north and south with her father since she was young and had seen too many people go bankrupt because of stocks and bonds. She complained to Wei Ruolai quite a bit. Wei Ruolai was confident in the construction bonds. He guaranteed that he would not let everyone lose money. Niu Chunmiao was so angry that she shouted and screamed, but it was no use.

Wei Ruolai watched the trend of the construction bonds every day. He found that the stock price was abnormal. Someone was selling off large quantities, while citizens were rushing to buy. He immediately called and informed Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan guessed that other banks were illegally selling off the bonds and was worried for those small investors. Kang Shaojie sent someone to inquire about inside information. The Ministry of Finance was preparing to redeem the construction bonds early.

Aunt Zhou heard the unofficial news from the Ministry of Finance and decided to put all her money into buying bonds. Granduncle advised her to quit while she was ahead. Aunt Zhou sent A-Wen to find Wei Ruolai to inquire about the news. A-Wen came to find Wei Ruolai overnight. Wei Ruolai felt that the construction bonds had already risen to eighty and reminded A-Wen not to borrow money to buy them. A-Wen truthfully told Aunt Zhou.

He was so excited that he couldn't sleep. Early in the morning, he went to a pawnshop owner to borrow high-interest loans. As soon as the construction bonds opened, they rose to eighty and continued to rise, all the way up to eighty-eight. Aunt Zhou, A-Wen, and the others were so happy they couldn't stop smiling. The bank presidents regretted selling the bonds too early. They came together to question Zhang Mingquan.

Zhang Mingquan told them to buy at ninety, so they had no choice but to bite the bullet and buy back the construction bonds. The more Wei Ruolai thought about it, the more he felt something was wrong. The construction bonds had risen too high, which had already gone against the original intention of rebuilding Shanghai. He expressed his concerns to Shen Tunan, who was also worried about being unable to control it.

Aunt Zhou, Jiang Huhao, and A-Wen and others made a lot of money. They were so happy they couldn't stop smiling. Granduncle advised them to quit while they were ahead. Wei Ruolai also advised them to sell everything off. Aunt Zhou was unwilling; she wanted to wait until it rose to 100 before selling. She also told A-Wen and the others to keep it from Wei Ruolai.

As soon as the construction bonds opened, they rose sharply, all the way up to 100. Shen Tunan called Mr. Song for instructions, requesting to lock and seal the construction bonds of major banks to try and stabilize the price. Wen Biao immediately told Kang Shaojie the news he had been listening to. Mr. Song called Shen Tunan early in the morning and instructed him to sell off all the construction bonds. Shen Tunan was forced to comply.

He had originally planned to start locking the positions today, but unexpectedly, Mr. Song suddenly changed his mind. As soon as the construction bonds opened, they fell sharply. Shen Tunan told Wei Ruolai to sell all the bonds he held. The bond price plummeted all the way to 40 and became uncontrollable. Small investors were full of complaints. Shen Tunan couldn't get through to Mr. Song on the phone.

Chiang Kai-shek gave him a death order, telling him to find out the truth about the stock market crash but not to make the matter public. Shen Tunan's mood plummeted to rock bottom. Wei Ruolai saw the stock investors crying and wailing. Yu Shiqing brought people to the exchange to get money. He had mixed feelings. Citizens surged onto the streets for demonstrations and protests, demanding severe punishment for the masterminds behind manipulating the stock prices.

Xu Nuo sent Shen Jinzhen to find a way to enter the exchange and get the list of large transaction data. Wei Ruolai advised Shen Tunan to find the masterminds behind the scenes. Shen Tunan advised him to give up early. The two had a fierce argument when their opinions clashed. Wei Ruolai was completely disappointed in the Nanjing government; he could no longer tolerate it.

He resigned on the spot and slammed the door and left, ignoring Shen Tunan's advice. A-Wen lost everything he had invested and was unable to repay the huge high-interest loan. He wanted to jump off a building and commit suicide. Wei Ruolai rushed to the rooftop and kindly tried to persuade him, promising to help him repay the high-interest loan. A-Wen felt life was unbearable; he jumped from the building and died instantly on the spot.

Episode 27 Recap

Wei Ruolai looked at A-Wen in the pool of blood, heartbroken and grief-stricken. Yu Shiqing had Zhang Mingquan step forward to incite the bank presidents to sell the construction bonds to him, then drive up the price, and then devise a plan for them to buy them back. The stock price plummeted all the way to rock bottom, and Yu Shiqing made a huge profit with a quick turnover.

Pitiful were those retail investors who, like A-Wen, followed the trend and bought construction bonds; they lost everything and were eventually driven to desperation. Mr. Song left the entire mess to Shen Tunan. Yu Shiqing celebrated by drinking with Kang Shaojie and Zhang Mingquan, and he also wanted to see Shen Tunan become a laughingstock. The more Shen Tunan thought about it, the more something felt wrong.

Just as he was about to lock the construction bonds, Yu Shiqing and the others immediately cleared their positions and left. Shen Tunan suspected that the trader, Broker Liu, had tipped them off. Also, last time when he went to Zhabei to investigate the counterfeit currency case, the other party had also set up a fake workshop one step ahead.

Huang Congyun thought it was impossible, as Shen Tunan issued instructions via phone every time, and Broker Liu simply had no time to leak the information. Huang Congyun's words reminded Shen Tunan, and he immediately checked the office phone, discovering a listening device installed underneath. He guessed this had been secretly installed during the last office renovation. Shen Tunan was so angry his teeth were grinding. Huang Congyun advised Shen Tunan to go to Nanjing to complain to Chiang Kai-shek.

Shen Tunan couldn't help but smile bitterly, realizing that Kang Shaojie, Yu Shiqing, and the others had already set a trap for him to take the blame. Huang Congyun was so angry he didn't want to work anymore, and Shen Tunan was also completely disheartened, deciding to submit his resignation letter tomorrow. Aunt Zhou mortgaged her house to Boss Zhao to buy construction bonds.

Boss Zhao came to collect the debt, but Aunt Zhou had lost everything and had nothing left to repay. Boss Zhao wanted to repossess the house. Aunt Zhou argued with them based on reason and even swallowed the IOU note on the spot. Boss Zhao ordered his men to brutally beat Aunt Zhou. Wei Ruolai came home from work and saw this scene; he desperately protected Aunt Zhou. Aunt Zhou vented all her anger on Wei Ruolai.

Granduncle complained that Aunt Zhou hadn't listened to Wei Ruolai's advice to sell the bonds. Aunt Zhou fainted on the spot due to overwhelming anger. Boss Zhao had no choice but to leave dejectedly with his men. Wei Ruolai witnessed this scene, feeling an unspeakable pain in his heart. Shen Tunan said nothing while eating. Su Cishu saw that he had something on his mind and showed care and concern for him.

Shen Tunan then spoke about how Yu Shiqing and his ilk secretly manipulated the construction bonds and profited immensely from the national crisis. Shen Jinzhen gently advised Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan was completely disheartened by the corrupt Nanjing government. Granduncle, Wei Ruolai, and Niu Chunmiao mourned A-Wen together. Wei Ruolai was so sad his face was covered in tears.

Granduncle was going to Hong Kong to live with his son, and he advised Wei Ruolai not to continue working at the Central Bank. Niu Chunmiao advised Wei Ruolai to go back to their hometown with her. Aunt Zhou was crazy and delirious, talking nonsense. Niu Chunmiao persuaded her to leave after much effort. Wei Ruolai's heart was filled with self-blame, feeling that he was the main culprit.

--- Mingda came to Shen Tunan's house early in the morning and conveyed Chiang Kai-shek's order to him. Chiang Kai-shek ordered Shen Tunan to handle the aftermath of the construction bonds issue with full authority and also gave him a Zhongzheng sword. Shen Tunan knew the meaning of this sword: if he could not handle this incident well, he should atone with his death.

Shen Tunan advised Su Cishu to take Xiaoyuer back to her hometown in the countryside to temporarily avoid the situation, but Su Cishu insisted on staying with him through thick and thin. Fengju sent Aunt Zhou to a mental hospital. She believed Wei Ruolai was the culprit who harmed her aunt and swore to settle the score with Wei Ruolai.

Citizens came to the entrance of the Central Bank early in the morning to cause trouble, strongly demanding severe punishment for the masterminds behind the scenes. Wei Ruolai saw clearly from the side. Niu Chunmiao asked Wei Ruolai to pay for Aunt Zhou's hospitalisation fees. Wei Ruolai had lost all his money buying bonds and asked Niu Chunmiao to pay for the first three months for him.

Niu Chunmiao took the opportunity to suggest taking him back to their hometown, but Wei Ruolai refused to leave. He wanted to stay and avenge those who had died. That night, Wei Ruolai secretly came to the exchange to look for the list of large transaction data. Shen Jinzhen also came looking for these, and the two unexpectedly met. They searched separately and quickly found the list of transaction data.

Just as the two of them were about to leave, Yu Ziying came with people and burned the remaining lists of transaction data. Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen organized the stolen documents overnight. Niu Chunmiao couldn't help, so she went to bed early. Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen stayed up the whole night and only finished organizing the settlement lists until dawn.

Shen Jinzhen wanted to make these evidences public, but Wei Ruolai wanted to hand these over to Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan publicly announced that the mastermind behind this construction bonds incident was the Japanese Fukuda Shinichi, and that the high-level government officials were not involved. Shen Tunan reminded those present to unify their statements and guide the public's attention outwards. After the meeting ended, Wei Ruolai handed the settlement lists he had organized overnight to Shen Tunan, clearly stating that the masterminds behind the scenes were Yu Shiqing, Zhang Mingquan, Kang Shaojie, and others.

Episode 28 Recap

Wei Ruolai openly pointed out that Shen Tunan was lying. The manipulators of the construction bonds were not Japanese, but Yu Shiqing, Zhang Mingquan, Kang Shaojie, and others were the real culprits behind this stock market crash. When he and Shen Jinzhen stole the list of large transactions, he personally saw Yu Ziying destroy all the remaining transaction lists. He asked Shen Tunan to make the truth public.

Shen Tunan, on the other hand, reminded Wei Ruolai not to act arbitrarily, or the country would ultimately be the one to suffer. Wei Ruolai only wanted to give the public an explanation. He and Shen Tunan argued, each sticking to his own point, refusing to back down, and finally had a huge fight. Shen Tunan angrily offered to break off their master-disciple relationship, and they would sever ties from then on. Shen Jinzhen told Xu Nuo about this matter.

Xu Nuo was deeply disgusted by the Nationalist government's shameless actions and decided to publicize the settlement lists organized by Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen to the general public, so they could fully see the true face of the Nanjing government. Xu Nuo went to find the newspaper editor overnight. The editor was worried that the Nanjing government would seal off the newspaper office.

He advised Xu Nuo to hold a press conference, inviting hundreds of media outlets to collectively expose the truth. Wei Ruolai took the initiative to ask Xu Nuo for help in finding media to expose how the Nanjing government and Shanghai wealthy businessmen colluded to short the construction bonds, making a profit of up to fifteen million. Xu Nuo made various excuses to evade him. Wei Ruolai said he would go find the newspaper himself.

Xu Nuo quickly stopped him and told him his thoughts in detail. Wei Ruolai immediately drafted a plan on the spot. Xu Nuo felt that Wei Ruolai was a promising revolutionary seed. He discussed developing Wei Ruolai's party membership with Shen Jinzhen. Wei Ruolai went to a printing factory overnight and secretly printed a large batch of leaflets, calling on the public to come to the press conference.

At the same time, Xu Nuo wrote letters to major media outlets in Shanghai, inviting them to attend the press conference. Lin Qiaosong heard about this and had Wen Biao find the Axe Gang to help suppress it. Wei Ruolai took Niu Chunmiao to A-Wen's grave to pay respects, and then rushed to the press conference site. The press conference was about to begin. Reporters and citizens arrived at the scene.

Wen Biao was ambushed nearby with the Axe Gang members. The truth about the construction bonds was broadcast through loudspeakers. Wen Biao immediately led his men to search everywhere. Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen hid to the side and watched clearly. They tied a box of newspapers to a large cluster of balloons. The leaflets in the box scattered everywhere, and people rushed to read them. Lin Qiaosong personally led his men to investigate.

Major newspaper offices sent people onto the streets to distribute them to the public. They published the truth about the construction bonds scam on their front pages. The public was in an uproar. Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao took the newspapers to A-Wen's grave to console his spirit. Wei Ruolai wanted to see the masterminds brought to justice. Large numbers of citizens marched together on the streets, strongly demanding severe punishment for the masterminds.

Lin Qiaosong brought his men to the scene, threatening and intimidating the marching crowd. They refused to yield even unto death. Yu Ziying ordered their suppression. The police punched and kicked them. Kang Shaojie sent people to seal off several newspaper offices, but they still could not suppress the public's resistance. Yu Shiqing called Kang Shaojie and ordered him to kill anyone who caused trouble. --- Xu Nuo was very optimistic about Wei Ruolai.

He came to his home overnight to find him and persuaded him to work in the Soviet Area. Wei Ruolai didn't know much about the Communist Party, but he was completely disillusioned with the corrupt and dark Nanjing government. He wanted to finish the investigation report on the Soviet Area bank for Shen Tunan before leaving.

Xu Nuo asked him to write the report on the Soviet Area Workers' and Peasants' Bank in a less impressive way, using it to paralyze the Nationalist government. Wei Ruolai readily agreed. Wei Ruolai came to the Central Bank early in the morning to find Shen Tunan. Huang Congyun threw the report into the trash can and told him to leave as soon as possible. Shen Tunan happened to come to work and picked up the report.

Wei Ruolai admitted that he didn't understand the Soviet Area Workers' and Peasants' Bank, but he knew that the Communist Party's bank would not harm the common people. Huang Congyun scoffed at Wei Ruolai, suspecting that he wanted to join the Communist Party. Wei Ruolai sneered at him. Wei Ruolai reminded Shen Tunan to watch out for himself. Lin Qiaosong took Wen Biao to suppress the demonstrating public. To seek psychological comfort, he treated those people as premeditated rioters.

Lin Qiaosong rushed into the Central Bank to take Shen Tunan back for questioning. Shen Tunan firmly refused, citing that he was busy with work. Lin Qiaosong threatened him by bringing up the Garrison Headquarters and ordered Shen Tunan's arrest. Huang Congyun desperately protected Shen Tunan. Wei Ruolai stepped forward to take all the blame. He admitted that he had stolen the transaction lists and that this matter had nothing to do with Shen Tunan.

Shen Tunan strongly defended Wei Ruolai. Lin Qiaosong, in anger, wanted to arrest both of them. Wei Ruolai admitted that he had done everything, clearing Shen Tunan of responsibility. Lin Qiaosong ordered Wei Ruolai's arrest. When Niu Chunmiao saw Wei Ruolai being arrested, she immediately went to Shen Jinzhen for help. She took out all the money she had and gave it to Shen Jinzhen to rescue him.

Hearing her description of the direction, Shen Jinzhen guessed that Wei Ruolai had been taken to the execution ground. When Shen Tunan saw Wei Ruolai being taken away, he rushed directly to Yu Shiqing's house, asking Yu Shiqing to intercede for Wei Ruolai. Yu Shiqing was in a difficult position, but he couldn't stand Shen Tunan's persistent pleading. Yu Shiqing had no choice but to steel himself and call Sister Song. Sister Song agreed to give Shen Tunan face. Yu Shiqing called Kang Shaojie to inform him to release Wei Ruolai, but unexpectedly, Lin Qiaosong had already escorted Wei Ruolai directly to the execution ground.

Episode 29 Recap

Hearing that Lin Qiaosong had taken Wei Ruolai directly to the execution ground, Shen Tunan didn't say a word and immediately took Huang Congyun to rush over and save him. Lin Qiaosong saw people coming to rescue Wei Ruolai and ordered the execution to begin immediately. Shen Jinzhen and Niu Chunmiao arrived in time, and a fierce battle broke out between the two sides. Huang Congyun worried that Shen Tunan was in danger and drove him aside to hide.

Wei Ruolai escaped amidst the chaos. Lin Qiaosong drove after him relentlessly. Shen Jinzhen and Niu Chunmiao attacked Lin Qiaosong from the front and back. Unable to dodge, Lin Qiaosong crashed his car into a large tree. He watched helplessly as Wei Ruolai was rescued by Niu Chunmiao, so angry he gnashed his teeth. Shen Tunan was worried about Wei Ruolai. He got out of the car and came to the execution ground to search for him.

All the members of Lin Qiaosong's death squad were killed, but there was no sign of Wei Ruolai. Shen Tunan saw Shen Jinzhen's back from afar, but couldn't see clearly because it was too far away. He found a bullet casing at the scene. Shen Jinzhen saw Shen Tunan return after leaving. Fearing he would recognize her, she quickly put away her submachine gun and left the scene. Shen Jinzhen and Niu Chunmiao rescued Wei Ruolai and brought him back.

Shen Jinzhen told Wei Ruolai to take Niu Chunmiao to the Soviet Area. Wei Ruolai wanted to stay and continue investigating the real culprits behind the construction bonds scam. Shen Jinzhen advised him to give up early. Even if he found the truth, he couldn't change the current state of government corruption. Shen Jinzhen told Wei Ruolai to go work at the Soviet Area bank.

Niu Chunmiao also chimed in, and only then did Wei Ruolai reluctantly agree to transfer as soon as possible. Shen Jinzhen asked Xu Nuo to arrange for Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao to go to the Soviet Area. Xu Nuo complained that Shen Jinzhen shouldn't have acted on her own. He had already arranged Wei Ruolai's transfer route, but he didn't expect Niu Chunmiao to be added.

Shen Jinzhen learned from Niu Chunmiao that her beloved Brother Liao Si had joined the Red Army and that she had come to Shanghai this time to break off her engagement with Wei Ruolai and then earn a lot of money to join the Red Army. Xu Nuo agreed to arrange for Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao to leave Shanghai together. Wei Ruolai couldn't sleep all night.

He was going to the Soviet Area tomorrow, but he knew very little about the Communist Party and felt uneasy. Niu Chunmiao told him many things about the Soviet Area and the Red Army. Shen Jinzhen came home very late. Shen Tunan had been waiting for her. Seeing the violin case she was carrying, he confirmed that it was Shen Jinzhen who had rescued Wei Ruolai at the execution ground today. Shen Jinzhen claimed to know nothing.

Shen Tunan reminded her to dispose of the gun as soon as possible so as not to implicate their family. Shen Jinzhen opened the violin case; there was no gun inside, but a violin. Lin Qiaosong reported to Kang Shaojie the process of Wei Ruolai being rescued. Kang Shaojie sent him to the arsenal to arrest Shen Jinzhen. The factory director had no choice but to let them in to search.

Lin Qiaosong meticulously searched Shen Jinzhen's office, only finding two business cards for a fashion store. As soon as Shen Jinzhen left, she was followed. She had the rickshaw puller circle around in small alleys and finally shook off her pursuers. Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao waited until ten o'clock but still didn't see Shen Jinzhen. They quickly went to the fashion store to find Xu Nuo and ask for the reason.

Xu Nuo guessed that something had happened to Shen Jinzhen and arranged for Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao to leave Shanghai by water. Lin Qiaosong brought people to the fashion store to make arrests. Xu Nuo forcefully chased Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao away. Lin Qiaosong forced Xu Nuo to reveal Shen Jinzhen's whereabouts. Xu Nuo refused to yield even unto death. He had already prepared himself for sacrifice.

Shen Jinzhen arrived at a small hotel and learned that Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao had already left. She hurried to the fashion store and saw a loud explosion from the store from afar. Shen Jinzhen knew that Xu Nuo had sacrificed himself to protect Wei Ruolai. She stood there in a daze. Shen Tunan arrived in time to take her away. Wei Ruolai heard the explosion from the fashion store and guessed that Xu Nuo had sacrificed himself.

He felt very sad and pulled Niu Chunmiao along to leave. Lin Qiaosong's subordinates were almost all killed or injured by the explosion. He was also injured. Wen Biao only found a ledger at the scene. Lin Qiaosong immediately took people to Shen Tunan's house to arrest Shen Jinzhen. Shen Tunan took Shen Jinzhen to a safe area and questioned her about when she joined the Communist Party. Shen Jinzhen admitted she was an underground party member.

In a fit of anger, Shen Tunan slapped her hard. Shen Jinzhen swore she wouldn't implicate Shen Tunan's entire family and asked Shen Tunan to shoot her. Shen Tunan was heartbroken, not expecting Shen Jinzhen to have joined the Communist Party behind his back. Shen Jinzhen advised Shen Tunan not to remain stubbornly unrepentant. Only the Communist Party could save this country. With tears in her eyes, Shen Jinzhen said goodbye to Shen Tunan.

She was going to escort Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao in their evacuation from Shanghai. Lin Qiaosong led his men to rush into Shen Tunan's house. Shen Jinzhen wasn't home. Lin Qiaosong took his men to the train station and docks to search for Shen Jinzhen. Shen Tunan worried that Shen Jinzhen was in danger and drove after her. Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao dodged and weaved, but ended up being kidnapped by Qian Shaoliang's subordinates.

Qian Shaoliang was completely disillusioned with the Nationalist Party. He wanted to make friends with the Communist Party to leave a way out for himself. He asked Wei Ruolai to help take care of his relatives in his hometown in Jiangxi. Shen Jinzhen remembered Xu Nuo's death and was heartbroken, tears streaming down her face.

Episode 30 Recap

Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao left Shanghai by bus. The investigation team set up a roadblock halfway. The two of them pretended to be a couple and got through the inspection. Wei Ruolai saw they were holding a photo of Shen Jinzhen and guessed that something had happened to Shen Jinzhen. Lin Qiaosong brought Wen Biao to stake out at the gas station. Li Chengda had escaped through this route back then.

Shen Tunan drove Shen Jinzhen to the gas station; they reluctantly said goodbye, and Shen Tunan drove away. Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao's bus passed by the gas station, and they saw Shen Jinzhen from afar. Lin Qiaosong gave the order to arrest Shen Jinzhen, and Wei Ruolai quickly got off the bus to protect her. Shen Jinzhen was surrounded. She wanted to end her life, but Wei Ruolai desperately stopped her.

Shen Tunan heard the gunshots and immediately drove back to the gas station. In desperation, he set fire to the fuel tank. The gas station was instantly blown up, and both Lin Qiaosong and Shen Tunan were stunned by the blast. Without a word, Wei Ruolai pulled Shen Jinzhen up and left. Shen Jinzhen worried about Shen Tunan's safety. Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao kindly advised her, believing that Shen Tunan would be alright. Su Cishu took Xiaoyuer home.

Huang Congyun told her about Shen Tunan being injured in the explosion. Su Cishu rushed to the hospital immediately. After the medical staff's full efforts, Shen Tunan was out of danger. Because of severe burns, he remained unconscious. After the surgery, Wen Biao wanted to shoot Shen Tunan. Deng Ze and the bank staff desperately protected Shen Tunan, so Wen Biao had no choice but to give up.

Lin Qiaosong sent people to stake out the ward, forbidding anyone from visiting Shen Tunan. Su Cishu came to visit Shen Tunan. Lin Qiaosong allowed her to go in, carefully inspecting the books she brought. Su Cishu read Shen Tunan his favorite "Zizhi Tongjian," hoping he would wake up soon. Wei Ruolai, Shen Jinzhen, and Niu Chunmiao traveled through wind and rain, climbed mountains, and forded streams, finally arriving in Jiangxi. They felt an unprecedented sense of freedom.

Suddenly, a torrential rain poured down, and the three of them hid in a mountain cave to shelter from the rain. Su Cishu stayed by Shen Tunan's side constantly. Shen Tunan finally woke up. Su Cishu was so emotional she was on the verge of tears. Shen Tunan couldn't wait to know about Shen Jinzhen. Su Cishu only knew that she had left with Wei Ruolai.

Su Cishu advised Shen Tunan not to harbor any more illusions about the corrupt Nationalist Party government. Shen Tunan learned that he had been dismissed from his post and was furious. The doctor suggested craniotomy for Shen Tunan, otherwise he would often be tormented by headaches. Su Cishu was at a loss for what to do. Kang Shaojie was delighted to see Shen Tunan completely defeated. He drank a celebratory toast in advance.

Wei Ruolai, Shen Jinzhen, and Niu Chunmiao took a small boat towards the base area. The boatman became suspicious of their identities and blew a whistle to call the nearby patrolling Red Army soldiers. Shen Jinzhen took out her letter of proof to verify her identity, but it had been soaked by rain during their journey and was illegible. Song Futian, the Red Army deputy company commander, took them back. Shen Tunan was discharged from the hospital and went home.

He wanted to arrange a new placement for Huang Congyun. Deng Ze came to visit Shen Tunan and told him about the recent situation at the Central Bank. Kang Shaojie had taken complete control of the Central Bank and spread the news that Shen Tunan was dead, denying him any chance of making a comeback. Su Cishu advised Shen Tunan not to be angry.

Their family could take advantage of this opportunity to settle abroad and live a free and easy life. Shen Tunan also had this intention. Company Commander Kong Lingzheng verified Shen Jinzhen's identity with the Shanghai underground party organization and promised to send the three of them to Ruijin as soon as possible. Kong Lingzheng had heard of Wei Ruolai long ago and warmly welcomed him to the Soviet Area Workers' and Peasants' Bank. Niu Chunmiao learned that her beloved Brother Liao Si, whom she had been thinking about constantly, had sacrificed himself during the anti-encirclement campaign, and she was heartbroken with grief.

Episode 31 Recap

Shen Tunan was implicated by Shen Jinzhen and dismissed from his post. He agreed to take his wife Su Cishu and daughter Xiaoyuer to settle abroad, but he constantly followed the domestic situation. Chiang Kai-shek personally served as commander-in-chief, directing 400,000 troops to encircle and suppress the base area in Southern Jiangxi. In the end, he was defeated and fled in disarray. Shen Tunan was puzzled. The Red Army not only had fewer soldiers but also backward equipment.

How could they resist the Kuomintang's 400,000 troops? Su Cishu advised him not to worry needlessly, as they would be leaving soon. Song Futian escorted Shen Jinzhen, Wei Ruolai, and Niu Chunmiao to Ruijin. Wei Ruolai saw that the people here lived and worked in peace and contentment, and the army and civilians were like one family.

He couldn't help but think of A-wen, who died in the stock market crash, Aunt Zhou, who went mad, and Shen Tunan, who was seriously injured because of them. Wei Ruolai felt utterly disheartened and no longer wanted to work in finance. He wanted to go home and be with his old father. Shen Jinzhen and Niu Chunmiao tried desperately to persuade him, but it was of no avail.

Lei Ming rushed over after hearing the news and warmly welcomed the arrival of Wei Ruolai, the financial genius. He couldn't wait to introduce him to the situation of the Soviet Area Workers' and Peasants' Bank. Wei Ruolai was not interested; he only wanted to go home to report the news of Wei Ruochuan's death to his father and hold a funeral for Wei Ruochuan.

Lei Ming readily agreed, hoping that Wei Ruolai would come to his senses and willingly work for the Soviet Area. Shen Jinzhen went to see Wei Ruolai off and welcomed him to work in the Soviet Area anytime. Shen Tunan was concerned about the current state of the Kuomintang.

He stayed up all night writing a treatise titled "On the Strategy of Economic Encirclement and Suppression of the Red Areas," suggesting that the Soviet base areas be sanctioned by economic means, specifically cutting off the export of tungsten ore from the Southern Jiangxi region. Su Cishu saw it all. Niu Chunmiao accompanied Wei Ruolai back to his hometown. Wei's father and Wei Ruolai had not seen each other for many years.

He was so emotional he burst into tears and hugged Wei Ruolai tightly, refusing to let go. Wei Ruolai immediately recounted everything about Wei Ruochuan's death and how he was wanted for avenging Wei Ruochuan. His father was heartbroken with grief. Wei Ruolai promised to stay by his father's side. The neighbors helped arrange Wei Ruochuan's funeral. Niu Chunmiao's father recommended Wei Ruolai to be an accountant. Wei Ruolai promised to give it serious consideration.

Niu's father urged Niu Chunmiao to marry Wei Ruolai as soon as possible. Niu Chunmiao fiercely opposed it. Wei Ruolai came to write a reply to Niu's father overnight. He was willing to be an accountant. Niu's father insisted on knowing why Wei Ruolai wanted to break off the engagement. Niu Chunmiao revealed that Shen Jinzhen liked Wei Ruolai. Niu's father, in a fit of anger, drove Wei Ruolai away. Wei Ruolai officially went to work early in the morning.

He recalled the bits and pieces of his experiences in Shanghai, feeling a mix of emotions. Fang Ling was working as an assistant in the shop. She and Wei Ruolai were neighbors. Due to years of war, business was slow in the shop. Fang Ling wanted to learn accounting to become a female accountant in the future. Wei Ruolai taught her how to read, write, and do accounting. Fang Ling's father borrowed high-interest loans and couldn't repay them.

The creditors wanted to take Fang Ling as compensation. Wei Ruolai stood up for Fang Ling but was outnumbered. He could only watch helplessly as the creditors took Fang Ling away. After returning home, Wei Ruolai couldn't eat or sleep and was always gloomy. His father was curious and asked about the reason. Wei Ruolai wanted to use the family's money to repay Fang Ling's father's debt. Gunshots suddenly rang out outside.

His father took Wei Ruolai to stand at the door to watch the commotion. Seeing the Red Army soldiers enter their village, his father let out a long sigh of relief, hoping that better days would come soon. Wei Ruolai went out early in the morning and saw Kong Lingzheng from afar promoting the Red Army's policies to the villagers, stating that all systems of servitude and high-interest loans would be abolished.

The villagers cheered and rejoiced, shouting "Long live the Communist Party, Long live the Red Army. " Kong Lingzheng burned the high-interest loan bills on the spot. Wei Ruolai fell into deep thought, recalling the words of Xu Nuo, Shen Jinzhen, and Lei Ming, among others. He completely saw that the Communist Party was truly serving the people. Wei Ruolai immediately decided to work at the Soviet Area Workers' and Peasants' Bank in Ruijin. His father fully supported his decision.

Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao arrived in Ruijin. Lei Ming warmly welcomed them and gave Wei Ruolai a detailed introduction to the situation of the Soviet Area Workers' and Peasants' Bank. Chiang Kai-shek read the article written by Shen Tunan and specially sent Mingda to convey his thanks to Shen Tunan.

He also personally wrote the Huangpu Military Academy motto and gave it to Shen Tunan, asking Shen Tunan to go to the Soviet Area as a special commissioner to carry out economic encirclement and suppression. Shen Tunan had already prepared to accompany his wife and daughter to England. He politely declined.

Chiang Kai-shek had anticipated that Shen Tunan would not agree and had Mingda present Shen Tunan with the Hu board used by Yu Qian, a loyal minister of the Ming Dynasty. He entrusted Shen Tunan with an important task. Shen Tunan found it difficult to refuse such a generous offer and had no choice but to accept. Su Cishu heard everything clearly from the stairs. She returned to the room without saying anything and sulked.

Su Cishu was upset and ignored Shen Tunan. She had already bought the boat tickets to England and arranged for Xiaoyuer's school. She didn't expect Shen Tunan to suddenly change his mind and decide to stay. Shen Tunan only wanted to dedicate himself to the country. Su Cishu was furious and threw a tantrum. Shen Tunan tried his best to comfort her, hoping she would understand his decision. Su Cishu just couldn't come to terms with it.

Episode 32 Recap

Shen Tunan said goodbye to his wife and daughter and took Huang Congyun to Jiangxi to take up his new post. Su Cishu and Xiaoyuer rushed to the dock. They wanted to accompany Shen Tunan to Jiangxi. Shen Tunan was moved to tears. Kang Shaojie heard that Shen Tunan had left Shanghai with his wife and daughter early in the morning and guessed that Chiang Kai-shek had entrusted him with an important task. He was very unhappy.

The high-level officials of the Nanjing government specifically named Lin Qiaosong to go to Jiangxi to suppress the communists. Kang Shaojie then learned that Lin Qiaosong had gone to Nanjing to pull strings. He didn't want to stay in Shanghai doing nothing and waiting to die; he wanted to go to the front line to serve the country. Kang Shaojie had no choice but to let him go.

Kang Shaojie worried that once Shen Tunan gained power, he would make a comeback. He immediately called Yu Shiqing for help. Lin Qiaosong was leaving for Jiangxi early tomorrow morning. Before leaving, he came to the nightclub to say goodbye to Song Meijuan. Song Meijuan agreed to go with him. Lin Qiaosong couldn't bear to let Song Meijuan suffer with him, but Song Meijuan had made up her mind.

Wei Ruolai officially took office at the Soviet Area Workers' and Peasants' Bank. He was very adept at his work and was appointed as the Deputy Section Chief of the General Affairs Department to assist Lei Ming. Lei Ming had high hopes for him. The newspaper published the news that Shen Tunan had died after medical treatment was ineffective. Lei Ming showed the newspaper to Wei Ruolai. Wei Ruolai was heartbroken. He immediately told Shen Jinzhen this terrible news.

Shen Jinzhen suppressed her grief and quietly left with tears in her eyes. That night, Shen Jinzhen couldn't sleep due to excessive grief. She couldn't help but recall Shen Tunan's former appearance and smile. Now, the siblings were separated forever. Shen Jinzhen was so heartbroken she wished she could die. Wei Ruolai also couldn't sleep all night because of Shen Tunan's death, and tears involuntarily flowed down his face.

Shen Tunan brought Huang Congyun, his wife, and daughter to Ganzhou to take up his post. He was ordered to use the alias Tu Nanshen. The local garrison commander, Commander Qian, personally welcomed them and arranged a large house for them. Huang Congyun heard that Lin Qiaosong was about to arrive in Ganzhou to suppress the communists and immediately informed Shen Tunan.

Shen Tunan guessed that the Nanjing government was not at ease with him and had specifically sent Lin Qiaosong to monitor him. Lin Qiaosong arrived in Ganzhou shortly after with Biaozi. He took the initiative to visit Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan decided to first deal with the gentry in Ganzhou and hoped Lin Qiaosong would cooperate with his work. Lin Qiaosong readily agreed. Shen Tunan held a family banquet and invited all the gentry from Ganzhou.

Lin Qiaosong brought evidence of two gentry privately trading tungsten ore with the Soviet Area for huge profits and intended to deal with them harshly. Commander Qian threatened him by bringing up Commander Chen of the Cantonese Army, but Lin Qiaosong didn't care at all and executed the two gentry on the spot. Shen Tunan produced Chiang Kai-shek's handwritten order.

As a special commissioner, Shen Tunan could mobilize the special force at any time, and the local garrison must fully cooperate with his work. Shen Tunan allocated contributions to the gentry, asking them to donate money for suppressing the communists. They reluctantly paid up. As soon as Shen Tunan took office, he took decisive action. First, he cut off the Soviet Area's transportation lines. Next was Sanjiangkou, the most important transportation hub.

Sanjiangkou was heavily guarded, so Shen Tunan decided to first release some counterfeit currency to disrupt the Soviet Area's monetary transactions. Lin Qiaosong brought people to inspect the supplies transported by the Cantonese Army. He secretly met with Song Meijuan's brother, Song Mengzhong. Lin Qiaosong, without Song Meijuan's knowledge, arranged for Song Mengzhong to be an undercover agent in the Red Army. Song Mengzhong was eager to see Song Meijuan.

Lin Qiaosong promised to let the siblings meet once Song Mengzhong cooperated to complete the mission of suppressing the communists. Song Meijuan dreamed that her brother Song Mengzhong was about to be executed by the Communist Party. She woke up in a cold sweat. Lin Qiaosong spoke to her kindly to comfort her but still concealed Song Mengzhong's whereabouts. Wei Ruolai discovered that a lot of counterfeit currency was circulating in the market. He hurried to investigate everywhere.

Upon hearing this, depositors rushed to the bank with the counterfeit money to exchange it for silver dollars. Wei Ruolai desperately tried to appease the depositors, promising to investigate the matter as soon as possible and give everyone a satisfactory answer. For a moment, Wei Ruolai didn't know how to handle the counterfeit currency issue. He went to consult with Shen Jinzhen. Shen Jinzhen believed that Shen Tunan could handle this matter calmly, but unfortunately, he was no longer around.

Xiaoyuer and her classmate Xiaoyun were good friends. Xiaoyun's mother learned of Shen Tunan's identity and forbade Xiaoyun from playing with Xiaoyuer. Shen Tunan was also helpless and could only ask Xiaoyuer to share her snacks with other classmates.

Episode 33 Recap

Shen Tunan launched an encirclement and suppression campaign against the Soviet Area's economy. He decided to first take control of Sanjiangkou, the largest transaction and transportation route. The defense zone of Sanjiangkou had always been garrisoned by the Cantonese Army. Lin Qiaosong led his men to detain the Cantonese Army's transport ships, killed several crew members, and charged them with colluding with the communists. Upon hearing the news, Commander Qian Fengshi rushed to find Lin Qiaosong to demand an explanation.

Lin Qiaosong didn't put him in his eyes at all. Commander Qian Fengshi was enraged, and both sides were at daggers drawn. Shen Tunan hurried over. He presented conclusive evidence of the Cantonese Army colluding with the communists. Lin Qiaosong also brought up Commander He, the Commander-in-Chief of the suppression of communists, to threaten them. Commander Qian Fengshi saw that Shen Tunan wanted to seize the Sanjiangkou defense zone.

The two sides drew their guns on each other when words failed. Shen Tunan wanted to take Commander Qian Fengshi to see Commander He. Commander Qian Fengshi didn't want to lose his official position, so he had no choice but to lead his men away sullenly. The more Commander Qian Fengshi thought about it, the angrier he got.

When he learned that Shen Tunan had changed his name to clear his name in the Soviet Area, he had to tolerate it temporarily, vowing to take back the Sanjiangkou defense zone sooner or later. The bank president pondered deeply and found a good method for currency anti-counterfeiting. The new currency would emit a burnt smell when heated by fire. Only the bank president and the technician responsible for this technology knew this method.

Someone privately sought out Lu Hui and revealed that her husband Cui Yungge had been killed by Shen Tunan. Lu Hui hated Shen Tunan deeply. Lu Hui and Cui Yungge's daughter, Xiaoyun, and Xiaoyuer were classmates and were originally good friends. When Xiaoyun learned that Shen Tunan was the murderer of her father, she ignored Xiaoyuer and publicly cursed Shen Tunan as a murderer. The classmates ganged up on Xiaoyuer.

Xiaoyuer desperately defended Shen Tunan, but her classmates didn't believe her at all and cursed at Xiaoyuer. Su Cishu learned that Xiaoyuer was being bullied and asked Shen Tunan to step forward and get justice for her. Shen Tunan agreed to take Xiaoyuer out for a stroll after school tomorrow. Shen Tunan left work to pick up Xiaoyuer from school. Lu Hui stopped him halfway and asked to talk to him in the car.

Shen Tunan didn't think much of it and let Lu Hui get in the car. Lu Hui asked Shen Tunan to transfer Xiaoyuer to another school. Shen Tunan promised to give her a reply as soon as possible. Shen Tunan arrived at the school entrance to pick up Xiaoyuer. Lu Hui hid to the side and watched clearly. She had been entrusted by someone to place a bomb in Shen Tunan's car.

She only wanted to blow up Shen Tunan and didn't want to harm Xiaoyuer. Despite that person's obstruction, Lu Hui shouted loudly that there was a bomb in the car. Before Lu Hui's words had faded, Shen Tunan's car exploded violently. Huang Congyun was blown away. Shen Tunan desperately protected Xiaoyuer. Assassins took the opportunity to assassinate Shen Tunan. Huang Congyun shot and killed them. Lu Hui picked up an assassin's gun and aimed it at Shen Tunan.

Shen Tunan had no choice but to shoot and kill her. Xiaoyuer witnessed this scene and cried uncontrollably in fear. Shen Tunan sent Xiaoyuer to the hospital. Su Cishu stayed by Xiaoyuer's side every step of the way. She wanted to take Xiaoyuer back to Shanghai and didn't want to stay there in fear anymore. Shen Tunan desperately comforted her. Huang Congyun carefully investigated Cui Yungge's background. He was shot because of smuggling.

Huang Congyun determined that Commander Qian Fengshi was behind it. Shen Tunan looked at the still shaken Su Cishu and Xiaoyuer, his heart filled with self-blame. His chronic headache suddenly flared up. Shen Tunan was in unbearable pain, and Su Cishu felt heartache. Lin Qiaosong hired Yang Liuzhi, a skilled local expert in fire operations, to produce counterfeit currency and circulate it widely in Ganzhou.

The Soviet Area quickly produced anti-counterfeiting paper currency, which Yang Liuzhi racked his brains over but couldn't counterfeit. Shen Tunan ordered Lin Qiaosong to find the production process for the new Soviet Area currency at all costs. Subsequently, Shen Tunan launched a strict inspection campaign in Ganzhou. He issued certificates to merchants trading salt and tungsten ore. Unlicensed operators found would be killed without question.

All ships passing through Sanjiangkou had to obtain a code book, and only after verification by the special force with the code could they pass. Shen Tunan invalidated the passes issued by Commander Qian Fengshi when he was stationed at Sanjiangkou. The code was changed at any time to prevent cheating. Commander Qian Fengshi dared to be angry but did not dare to speak.

Wei Ruolai and Lei Ming discussed and decided to inform the public how to distinguish counterfeit currency by using big-character posters, and then investigate the counterfeit currency dens. The soldiers posted big-character posters in streets and alleys, publicizing to the people how to identify counterfeit currency. After rigorous investigation by the soldiers and reports from the public, a lot of counterfeit currency came from the Xingtong Commercial Bank.

The bank primarily sold kerosene and was located on the border between the Soviet Area and the Kuomintang-controlled area, making the investigation very tricky. Lei Ming and Wei Ruolai didn't know what to do for a moment. Lin Qiaosong sent Yang Liuzhi to secretly produce counterfeit silver dollars and circulate them in the Soviet Area through the Xingtong Commercial Bank, severely impacting the Soviet Area's economy and causing prices to rise by 30%.

Shen Tunan didn't dare to take it lightly. He firmly believed that Wei Ruolai could find the source of the counterfeit currency within a month. Wei Ruolai analyzed various signs and concluded that a highly skilled counterfeit currency producer had arrived in Ganzhou and wanted to meet this person personally. Lei Ming worried about his safety and sent Kong Lingzheng to investigate with his men.

Wei Ruolai insisted on going to Ganzhou and also wanted to take Shen Jinzhen with him. Lei Ming couldn't dissuade him and had to agree to let them go for an inspection. As soon as Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen arrived in Ganzhou, they went straight to the Xingtong Commercial Bank, asking to purchase a large amount of kerosene to transport to Dayu. Boss Wang immediately reported to Lin Qiaosong. Lin Qiaosong sent someone to meet Wei Ruolai.

Shen Jinzhen took out a thousand Soviet yuan as a deposit and even heated the Soviet yuan over a fire on the spot. Wei Ruolai claimed that he had the production process for real Soviet yuan and wanted to sell it for a high price. Lin Qiaosong sent people to first keep Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen stable, and then take Wei Ruolai to the printing plant to produce it on the spot.

That night, the boss took Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen to the printing plant and put hoods on them. Lin Qiaosong led his men to ambush behind them and did not find anyone following Wei Ruolai. Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen were taken to the counterfeit currency plant. Shen Tunan had been waiting there for a long time. They all thought Shen Tunan was dead. Shen Jinzhen complained that Shen Tunan shouldn't have hidden it from her.

Shen Tunan had his difficulties. Wei Ruolai was very disappointed in Shen Tunan, not expecting him to become the mastermind behind the counterfeit currency case now, and also launch an economic encirclement and suppression campaign against the Soviet Area. Shen Tunan forced Wei Ruolai to hand over the production process for the Soviet yuan. Wei Ruolai admitted that he didn't have it at all, because those techniques were top secret.

Shen Jinzhen was greatly disappointed by Shen Tunan's action of helping a villain do evil. The siblings got into a heated argument at the slightest disagreement.

Episode 34 Recap

Wei Ruolai persuaded Shen Tunan to turn back from his mistaken path, saying the Nationalist Government was selfish, brutal, and utterly corrupt, and that no one had yet received the punishment they deserved for the tragedy caused by the construction treasury bonds. He said the Communist Party was the only one truly thinking of the common people. Shen Jinzhen also advised Shen Tunan to turn over a new leaf.

Wei Ruolai invited Shen Tunan to visit the Soviet Area himself, saying that although the people were still poor, the smiles on their faces were the most genuine. Shen Tunan didn't listen at all, shouting at them. The soldiers of the Special Company of the Workers' and Peasants' Bank of the Soviet Area found the printing plant according to the address Wei Ruolai had predicted in advance. By the time Lin Qiaosong noticed, it was too late.

He immediately sent a signal to Commander Qian Fengshi down the mountain for help, but Commander Qian Fengshi ignored him. The soldiers of the Special Company and Lin Qiaosong's commando team engaged in fierce combat. Shen Tunan didn't believe that Wei Ruolai could find the location of the printing plant based solely on speculation. Wei Ruolai wanted to send people to hospitals to investigate; villages where kidney failure and poisoning symptoms were concentrated must be downstream of the printing plant.

He determined the specific location of the printing plant based on the tire tracks on the mountain road and the large amount of cooking smoke. Wei Ruolai explained his purpose: he wanted to completely destroy the printing plant and also meet the master behind the economic encirclement and suppression campaign against the Soviet Area. He didn't expect this person to be Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan was completely puzzled.

Since Wei Ruolai had deduced the address of the printing plant, there was no need to risk coming here. Wei Ruolai wanted to paralyze Lin Qiaosong; otherwise, Lin Qiaosong would send heavy troops to defend. Wei Ruolai repeatedly pleaded with Shen Tunan to go to the Soviet Area with him, but Shen Tunan flatly refused and drew his gun on him.

Kong Lingzheng and Niu Chunmiao led the soldiers of the Special Company to charge into the printing plant in one go. Lin Qiaosong's desperate resistance with his men was futile. He requested reinforcements from Commander Qian Fengshi, but Commander Qian Fengshi made various excuses to evade. Niu Chunmiao led people to rescue Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen, while Kong Lingzheng led people to destroy the printing workshop.

Shen Jinzhen wanted to replace Wei Ruolai as a hostage, but Shen Tunan firmly refused, ordering Huang Congyun to get the car ready while he held Wei Ruolai hostage, preparing to escape. Niu Chunmiao led her people in. Shen Tunan wanted to die, but Shen Jinzhen gently advised him, telling him to think of Su Cishu and Xiaoyuer. Wei Ruolai again urged Shen Tunan to go to the Soviet Area. Shen Tunan had no choice but to surrender.

Before leaving, Wei Ruolai told Kong Lingzheng to burn down all the machines in the counterfeit currency plant. Shen Tunan was locked in the woodshed. From the window, he saw the people living in peace and contentment, with happy smiles on everyone's faces. Wei Ruolai took Shen Tunan to visit the Workers' and Peasants' Bank of the Soviet Area.

On the way, some children thanked Wei Ruolai for teaching them to recognize counterfeit currency, saying they wanted to become Red Army soldiers when they grew up. Shen Tunan felt a mixture of emotions. Shen Tunan arrived at the bank and saw the people rushing to buy public bonds, helping the bank alleviate its financial crisis and supporting the Red Army in fighting the "white dogs" (a derogatory term for the Nationalist army). Shen Tunan was deeply moved.

Wei Ruolai took Shen Tunan to visit the Soviet Area Bank and introduced him to the bank's main business, which was assisting farmers by helping them solve problems with draft cattle and seeds, significantly increasing crop yields. This earned the people's recognition and trust, making them willing to buy public bonds. Shen Tunan toured the Soviet Area and deeply felt that the Communist Party and the Red Army genuinely cared for the common people.

The superiors decided to execute Shen Tunan by firing squad tomorrow. Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen were very surprised to hear this news. The two of them came together to see Shen Tunan off. Shen Tunan guessed this was his last meal. He entrusted Shen Jinzhen to send Su Cishu and Xiaoyuer abroad. Shen Tunan entrusted Shen Jinzhen to Wei Ruolai, saying he envied Wei Ruolai's ability to work for the people and that he was proud of him.

Shen Jinzhen and Wei Ruolai tearfully said goodbye to Shen Tunan. That night, the woodshed suddenly caught fire. Wei Ruolai rushed to fight the fire upon hearing the news and found that Shen Tunan had already escaped. Shen Tunan left the Soviet Area in a small boat. He went to the hospital overnight to see Xiaoyuer. Xiaoyuer was already asleep. Su Cishu was so excited to see him return alive that she couldn't speak.

Shen Jinzhen hoped that Shen Tunan's trip to the Soviet Area this time would bring about changes. Wei Ruolai also hoped that Shen Tunan would realize the truth. Due to the blockade of Sanjiangkou, the tungsten ore from the Soviet Area was unsalable. Shen Jinzhen wanted to turn the tungsten ore into tungsten wire. Wei Ruolai fully supported her idea and promised to help her find a factory building as soon as possible.

Shen Tunan came to the hospital to see Xiaoyuer. Xiaoyuer didn't want to see him and forced him away. Shen Tunan had no choice but to leave dejectedly. He vowed to take down Commander Qian Fengshi within a month. Shen Tunan remembered what Lei Ming had said to him and was deeply touched. Wei Ruolai discussed with Lei Ming selling tungsten ore using futures.

He proposed selling the tungsten ore to those tungsten ore merchants at a lower price and giving them the ore after they broke through Sanjiangkou. Lei Ming worried that the merchants would have concerns. Wei Ruolai suggested developing new tungsten ore mining areas to reassure the merchants. The international price of tungsten ore had risen by 30 percent. The Nanjing government's delay in seizing it caused dissatisfaction among foreigners.

Chiang Kai-shek ordered Mingda to inform Shen Tunan to obtain the distribution map of the Soviet Area's tungsten ore as soon as possible. Lin Qiaosong had already secretly sent people to transport explosives to the Soviet Area, intending to blow up the Soviet Area's tungsten ore mines. Shen Tunan supported his actions. The tungsten ore mines in the Soviet Area were blown up one after another. Lei Ming gave Wei Ruolai a pistol for self-defense.

Wei Ruolai speculated that the Nationalist Party's next step would be to blockade salt in the Soviet Area. The Soviet Area's salt reserves were only enough for one month. Currently, it was necessary to take control of Sanjiangkou to ensure the transportation of tungsten ore and salt. The Soviet Area sold tungsten ore to Ganzhou merchants, and Commander Qian Fengshi extracted a dividend from it. Lei Ming decided to first make a breakthrough with Commander Qian Fengshi. Wei Ruolai volunteered to meet Commander Qian Fengshi, and Lei Ming sent Shen Jinzhen to go with him.

Episode 35 Recap

Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen were ordered to go to Ganzhou to find Guangdong Army Brigade Commander Qian Fengshi. Lin Qiaosong soon learned of this and immediately reported to Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan guessed they came for the salt in the Soviet Area and sent Lin Qiaosong to keep a close eye on every move of Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen. He told him not to show mercy just because Shen Jinzhen was his biological sister.

He also reminded Lin Qiaosong to be extra careful, as Shen Jinzhen had strong anti-tracking abilities. Lin Qiaosong sent most of his men to keep a close watch on Qian Fengshi, so he wasn't worried about not catching Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen. Yan Youmin, the head steward of Guangdong Army Commander-in-Chief Chen Jitang, called to urge Qian Fengshi to sort out the accounts for Ganzhou this month and submit the money as soon as possible.

Qian Fengshi had no choice but to talk about Shen Tunan forcibly occupying Sanjiangkou. Yan Youmin didn't listen at all and forced him to hand over the money within a month, or else go back to his hometown in Jiangmen for retirement. Qian Fengshi was so anxious he didn't know what to do. Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen disguised themselves and came to Ganzhou. They passed through the city gate checkpoint smoothly and entered the city, then split up.

Shen Jinzhen went to find Shen Tunan's new codebook. Wei Ruolai disguised himself as a fortune teller and stopped Qian Fengshi's car, immediately pointing out the trouble Qian Fengshi had recently encountered. Qian Fengshi, upon learning that he was from Ruijin, invited him to the military camp for a private talk. Shen Tunan sent Huang Congyun to follow Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen, but Huang Congyun quickly lost track of them.

He had no choice but to go back and report to Shen Tunan. Wei Ruolai got straight to the point and explained his purpose, asking Qian Fengshi for help in providing salt to the Soviet Area. Qian Fengshi flatly refused and even drew his gun. Wei Ruolai then analyzed the current severe situation for him: Chiang Kai-shek and Guangdong Army Commander-in-Chief Chen Jitang were vying for power.

Shen Tunan was a special envoy appointed by Chiang Kai-shek, and he had evidence of Qian Fengshi doing business with the Soviet Area. Although Qian Fengshi was Chen Jitang's favorite general, if he couldn't submit the money to Chen Jitang in time, Chen Jitang would make him a scapegoat.

Qian Fengshi weighed the pros and cons and agreed to help the Soviet Area solve the salt shortage problem, but Shen Tunan was using a new codebook, which Wei Ruolai would find a way to get. Shen Jinzhen quietly came to the hospital to see Xiaoyuer. From a distance, she saw Shen Tunan standing at the door of the ward. His headache suddenly flared up, so he had to leave temporarily.

Shen Jinzhen seized the opportunity to approach the ward door. Shen Tunan turned around, saw Shen Jinzhen, and left silently without greeting her. He deliberately put the codebook in the drawer. Shen Jinzhen disguised herself as a nurse to bring medicine to Xiaoyuer. Xiaoyuer recognized her at a glance and cried, begging her to stay. Shen Jinzhen tried her best to comfort Xiaoyuer and promised to visit her often. Only then did Xiaoyuer fall asleep peacefully.

Shen Jinzhen called Su Cishu aside and asked her to help find the codebook. Su Cishu hesitated. When she learned that Shen Tunan would not be executed for this matter, but only expelled from the party, dismissed on the spot, and subjected to internal investigation, Su Cishu had long wanted Shen Tunan to leave this troublesome place and immediately decided to help Shen Jinzhen find the codebook. Su Cishu rushed home.

Using the excuse that the cook at home made unappetizing food for Xiaoyuer, she asked Zhang Ma to call all the servants to the kitchen. She then secretly let Shen Jinzhen into the house to find the codebook. Shen Jinzhen found the codebook in the drawer of Shen Tunan's study. She took pictures of each page with a camera. Shen Tunan suddenly came home. Learning that Su Cishu had returned from the hospital, he rushed directly to the study.

When Su Cishu heard that Shen Tunan was back, she immediately sent Shen Jinzhen out through the back door. Shen Tunan, hearing from outside that Su Cishu had sent Shen Jinzhen away, only then opened the door and entered the house. Shen Jinzhen came to the agreed location to meet Wei Ruolai, asking him to give the new code to Qian Fengshi as soon as possible, so that Qian Fengshi could transport the salt to the Soviet Area quickly.

Wei Ruolai worried that her frequenting the hospital would expose her identity and told her to leave Ganzhou as soon as possible. Shen Jinzhen rushed to the train station overnight. Shen Tunan hid to the side and felt relieved only after seeing Shen Jinzhen successfully board the train. Shen Jinzhen saw Shen Tunan seeing her off from the window, and tears welled up in her eyes with emotion. The siblings looked at each other through the window.

Although they didn't say a word, a thousand words turned into concern and reluctance to part for each other. Wei Ruolai gave the new code to Qian Fengshi. Qian Fengshi sent people to load the salt onto the ship overnight. Lin Qiaosong had already been waiting at the dock for a long time. He sent people to add arsenic to the salt, and then went excitedly to Shen Tunan to claim credit.

Shen Tunan scoffed at his poisoning act and fiercely cursed him for being inhumane. Lin Qiaosong, however, was indifferent and even told him to go report him to Nanjing. Shen Tunan was so angry his teeth clenched. Shen Tunan came to the hospital to see Xiaoyuer. This time, Xiaoyuer did not chase him away and even voluntarily recited the newly learned ancient poetry to him.

Shen Tunan explained to her the meaning of the virtuous conduct of the 'yang gu' (a character in the poem). Xiaoyuer felt that Shen Tunan was like the 'yang gu' and that his killing of Xiao Yun's father was also to eliminate harm for the people. Shen Tunan finally gained Xiaoyuer's understanding and forgiveness, and he was so moved he couldn't speak.

Shen Tunan sent Huang Congyun to send a telegram to the Soviet Area, reminding them not to consume this batch of salt mixed with arsenic. Lei Ming received Shen Tunan's telegram and immediately sealed the batch of salt. Some people suspected this was a smokescreen deliberately set by Shen Tunan, but Wei Ruolai believed Shen Tunan wouldn't lie.

Shen Tunan reported Lin Qiaosong's poisoning incident to Mingda, saying he didn't want to harm the common people, as it would lose public support. Mingda also did not hold him accountable. Lin Qiaosong, upon learning that Shen Tunan had informed the Soviet Area, came directly to confront Shen Tunan. Huang Congyun stepped forward to defend Shen Tunan, mocking Lin Qiaosong sarcastically. Lin Qiaosong was enraged and rushed forward to hit Huang Congyun. Shen Tunan loudly stopped him.

Wei Ruolai found out that one jin of highly pure arsenic was mixed into that batch of salt, all done with bayonets. Kong Lingzheng concluded that Qian Fengshi was behind it, but Wei Ruolai didn't understand Qian Fengshi's intention in doing this. Lei Ming told Wei Ruolai to investigate the matter slowly. The organization sent people to transport an Eagle Dollar machine from Shanghai to Yudu. Song Shoutian volunteered to transport the Eagle Dollar machine to the printing plant.

Kong Lingzheng asked Niu Chunmiao to cooperate with Song Shoutian. Lin Qiaosong arrested Qian Fengshi on the charge of collaborating with the Communists. Qian Fengshi ignored him and then left by car. Lin Qiaosong sent people to ambush him ahead and shot Qian Fengshi dead. Shen Tunan distributed all the money Qian Fengshi had embezzled to the soldiers of the Guangdong Army. They queued up to receive the money. Song Shoutian and Niu Chunmiao brought the Eagle Dollar machine back.

One of the bearings malfunctioned. Shen Jinzhen fixed it overnight without even stopping to eat. Song Shoutian secretly damaged the machine when no one was paying attention, but was caught red-handed by Wei Ruolai and Shen Jinzhen. They had long suspected something was wrong with Song Shoutian. Song Shoutian confessed everything truthfully. To save his sister Song Meijuan, he was forced to become Lin Qiaosong's informant. Wei Ruolai advised him to make amends by rendering meritorious service.

Episode 36 Recap

Lin Qiaosong brought people, disguised themselves, and snuck into the Soviet Area. Niu Chunmiao was escorting a batch of tungsten ore to Junmenling. Lin Qiaosong sent people to follow closely behind her. He brought people to the bank, cruelly killed the soldiers who were moving money out, stole all the money that had just been loaded onto the car. Before leaving, he also set the bank on fire. Lin Qiaosong attacked three branches overnight.

Lin Qiaosong sent people to distribute reactionary leaflets in the Soviet Area claiming the treasury was robbed and the Communist Army was defeated. Biaozi also spread rumors on the street. The people were panicking and rushed to the main branch to exchange currency. Lei Ming held an emergency meeting, asking everyone to quickly find out the origin of the killer. Song Shoutian volunteered to go gather information. Song Shoutian met with Biaozi overnight.

Biaozi conveyed Lin Qiaosong's "Anchor Aweigh" operation plan to him, asking him to quickly find out the exact location of the main branch treasury and promising to let him meet his sister Song Meijuan after the mission was successful. Song Shoutian reported Lin Qiaosong's plan to Lei Ming truthfully.

Lei Ming worried that the rumors would spread worse and worse, and the bank would not be able to cope with the people's run on the bank, so he could only open the treasury to cash out. Wei Ruolai felt this was inappropriate, as it was exactly what Lin Qiaosong wanted. He suggested holding a gold and silver exhibition to let the people know the bank's financial strength, and the rumors would then die down naturally.

Lei Ming decided to make the exhibition a grand event. Lei Ming had the soldiers beat drums and gongs, and held a lively and grand gold and silver exhibition. Shen Jinzhen also led the soldiers in performing programs. The people's confidence in the Communist Party and the Red Army greatly increased. Biaozi guessed that Song Shoutian had leaked information. He secretly kidnapped Song Shoutian. Lin Qiaosong cruelly killed Song Shoutian.

As the gold and silver exhibition was nearing its end, the bank's soldiers came to pack things up. Wei Ruolai was standing below the stage watching the performances when he accidentally saw Lin Qiaosong flash by. He immediately took people to chase after him, blocking Lin Qiaosong on a bridge. Lin Qiaosong sneered repeatedly. He had sent people to plant a bomb on the platform. Wei Ruolai ran back to evacuate the crowd and fired shots to warn them.

The bomb exploded instantly, and Wei Ruolai was knocked unconscious. Shen Jinzhen was injured by the explosion. She woke up groggily, picked up the injured child next to her, and handed her over to the medical staff. She turned around and saw the broken beam about to fall on the child below. Shen Jinzhen selflessly protected her. She was struck and fell unconscious. Wei Ruolai woke up and saw this scene, his heart aching, and tears streaming down his face.

Kong Lingzheng led the soldiers in hot pursuit of Lin Qiaosong and Biaozi. Biaozi was seriously injured. He pushed Lin Qiaosong away and deliberately stepped out to distract Kong Lingzheng and others. Lin Qiaosong personally witnessed Biaozi die to save him, and was heartbroken and in unbearable pain. Shen Jinzhen died due to ineffective treatment. The soldiers buried her. Wei Ruolai placed her favorite chocolate in front of her grave to express his grief for her.

Wei Ruolai wrote a letter to Shen Tunan, telling him the news of Shen Jinzhen's death. Shen Tunan went directly to Lin Qiaosong to demand an explanation, punching and kicking him. Lin Qiaosong pushed all the blame onto the Communist Party and also warned Shen Tunan to take care of himself. Shen Tunan cried bitterly in grief.

--- When Lei Ming went to Hans to discuss the tungsten business, Hans revealed that Guangdong Army Commander Chen Jitang was interested in tungsten ore, and the Soviet Area had already mined hundreds of tons of tungsten ore that couldn't be sold. Lei Ming heard that Yan Youmin, the head steward of Chen Jitang, had come to Ganzhou, and decided to take Wei Ruolai to meet Yan Youmin. Lei Ming brought Wei Ruolai to meet Yan Youmin.

He bargained with Yan Youmin, who was unwilling to compromise. Wei Ruolai clearly stated that they had developed a new technology to make tungsten ore into tungsten filament for sale. Only then was Yan Youmin willing to compromise, and both sides reached an agreement. Shen Tunan asked Su Cishu to take Xiaoyuer to England. Su Cishu persuaded him to leave together, but Shen Tunan wanted to stay and serve the country, so Su Cishu had to give up.

Shen Tunan saw Su Cishu and Xiaoyuer off at the dock, and he said goodbye to his wife and daughter with tears. Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao successfully joined the Communist Party, and Lei Ming led them in taking the oath. In May 1933, the Nationalist Government represented by Chiang Kai-shek mobilized nearly a million troops and equipped with over a hundred aircraft, launching an unprecedented fifth encirclement campaign against the Central Soviet Area. Mr.

Song heard that Yan Youmin was going to do tungsten business with the Soviet Area, and that the Soviet Area would use the million yuan from buying tungsten ore to purchase strategic materials. He sent Shen Tunan to Guangdong as soon as possible to prevent Yan Youmin from cooperating with the Soviet Area again at all costs. Mr. Song sent Lin Qiaosong to go with Shen Tunan. Director He sent Lin Qiaosong to monitor Shen Tunan.

If he made any unusual moves, he must obtain conclusive evidence. At the same time, Lei Ming sent Wei Ruolai to personally escort the tungsten ore to Guangdong to prevent sabotage from the Nanjing side.

Episode 37 Recap

Shen Tunan brought Huang Congyun to Guangzhou and found that the economy here was prosperous, trade was developed in all directions, comparable to Shanghai. He was greatly impressed by Chen Jitang's work ability. Lin Qiaosong arrived soon after, following closely behind. Shen Tunan knew that Lin Qiaosong was sent by Nanjing to monitor him, so he could only temporarily tolerate it.

Not long after Lin Qiaosong arrived in Guangzhou, he captured Hai Laoqizi, the head of the Triad's Hesheng Hall, who was trading tungsten ore with Japanese merchants at sea. Lin Qiaosong interrogated Hai Laoqizi overnight. Hai Laoqizi refused to say anything, so Lin Qiaosong tortured him severely. He would rather die than surrender. Shen Tunan rushed over upon hearing the news and charged Hai Laoqizi with colluding with the Communists.

Lin Qiaosong threatened to kill Hai Laoqizi, and Hai Laoqizi truthfully confessed everything. Meanwhile, Wei Ruolai smoothly loaded the tungsten ore onto the train using the pick-up order signed by Yan Youmin. The amount of tungsten ore transported on this trip was very large. Wei Ruolai dared not be careless and repeatedly confirmed that Hans would send someone to pick up the goods before boarding the train.

Hai Laoqizi confessed the time and place of each tungsten ore transaction, as well as the fact that the contact person opened a restaurant on Shanwei Street. Shen Tunan sent Lin Qiaosong with Hai Laoqizi to Shanwei Street to arrest the person. Seeing Lin Qiaosong taking Hai Laoqizi to search for the contact person restaurant by restaurant on Shanwei Street, the contact person immediately pulled Niu Chunmiao and Kong Lingzheng aside to hide.

Hai Laoqizi searched all the restaurants, big and small, on Shanwei Street but could not find the contact person. Lin Qiaosong had to go back and report to Shen Tunan. He also told Shen Tunan to use the method Wei Ruolai used to locate the counterfeit money factory to find out the time and place of this tungsten ore transaction. Shen Tunan heard the hidden meaning in his words but found it inconvenient to react immediately.

He analyzed that the transaction location was near the train station. Shen Tunan personally went to Huangsha Train Station to investigate. The train from Shaoguan to Guangzhou arrived punctually at 3 PM, carrying a large amount of coal. Shen Tunan speculated that this was tungsten ore shipped from southern Jiangxi and told Huang Congyun to stake out at the previous station, Xinjie Station. The train arrived at Xinjie Station. Wei Ruolai came to the platform to relax for a bit.

Suddenly, he saw the police checking the goods in the rear carriage and confirmed that the train was carrying coal. The police reported to Huang Congyun, who was hiding nearby. Huang Congyun called to notify Shen Tunan, and Shen Tunan ordered Lin Qiaosong to arrest the people at Huangsha Station. The train successfully arrived at Huangsha Station. Wei Ruolai noticed many suspicious people on the platform. He took his assistant and escaped by jumping out of the window.

Kong Lingzheng and Niu Chunmiao came to the station to meet Wei Ruolai. Lin Qiaosong found nothing. He personally went to the carriage to investigate and found over ten tons of tungsten ore in the carriage. Wei Ruolai and Kong Lingzheng and others safely retreated. Wei Ruolai saw Shen Tunan arrive at the station from afar and quickly told Kong Lingzheng and others to leave. Shen Tunan came to the carriage to count the tungsten ore.

Lin Qiaosong regretted not catching Wei Ruolai. Shen Tunan felt that Hai Laoqizi had limited ability and could not sell so much tungsten ore in a short time. Lin Qiaosong deduced that Chen Jitang was the mastermind behind the scenes. He smuggled goods overseas through the Guangdong Customs, and his head steward, Yan Youmin, was a supervisor at the Guangdong Customs.

Shen Tunan hinted to Lin Qiaosong to go to the Guangdong Customs to make a show of force and intimidate them. Lin Qiaosong was planning to do so anyway. Shen Tunan and Lin Qiaosong escorted over ten tons of tungsten ore to the Guangdong Customs to demand accountability. They immediately arrested Smart, the head of the Anti-Smuggling Department. Smart was not convinced and demanded to see Miles, the Director General of the Customs Administration.

Shen Tunan had already obtained conclusive evidence of Smart accepting bribes and sent people to escort him to Nanjing for interrogation. Shen Tunan appointed Lin Qiaosong to temporarily take over as the head of the Anti-Smuggling Department. Lin Qiaosong was flattered. Yan Youmin rushed to the Guangdong Customs upon hearing the news and advised Shen Tunan to release the tungsten ore. Shen Tunan showed him Mr. Kong's personal letter, and Yan Youmin had to compromise.

He offered to host a banquet for Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan threatened him by mentioning Chiang Kai-shek, and Yan Youmin agreed to fully cooperate with his actions. Shen Tunan decided to sell this batch of tungsten ore to Hans, but was worried that Hans might lower the price as a result. He called Mr. Song to ask for instructions. Mr.

Song told him to handle it as he saw fit and promised to credit him for the achievement when it was done. Shen Tunan instructed Lin Qiaosong to arrange personnel to guard this batch of tungsten ore 24 hours a day. Wei Ruolai deduced that Lin Qiaosong would monitor Yan Youmin. He wanted to use Yan Youmin to lure Lin Qiaosong away and then steal that batch of goods.

He sent someone to deliver a letter to Yan Youmin, inviting him to meet at Yangquan Restaurant tonight. He deliberately included a copy of the contract between Yan Youmin and Kong Lingzheng. Yan Youmin had wanted to distance himself from this batch of goods, but unexpectedly, Wei Ruolai used this to threaten him. Yan Youmin decided to silence him permanently. Shen Tunan went to see Hans.

Hans had always thought he was dead and was surprised that he had changed his name and become a special commissioner. The two enjoyed drinks and conversation. Shen Tunan claimed that the tungsten ore trading chain in Jiangxi had been cut off, and Hans would only be able to trade with him in the future. Hans knew that this batch of goods cost him nothing, so he seized the opportunity to lower the price to 70 yuan per hundred kilograms.

After careful consideration, Shen Tunan reluctantly agreed and told Hans the location where the tungsten ore was stored. Yan Youmin went to Yangquan Restaurant for the appointment. Lin Qiaosong sent someone to notify Shen Tunan. Shen Tunan said goodbye to Hans and rushed over. Meanwhile, Wei Ruolai sent someone to impersonate people from Rheinmetall Company to pick up the goods at the warehouse. They also brought his forged customs declaration form to pick up the goods.

The guard carefully verified the customs declaration form. Kong Lingzheng quietly snuck into the warehouse and killed the guard. He put on the guard's military uniform and covered for his comrades as they moved the tungsten ore out. When Lin Qiaosong arrived at Yangquan Restaurant, he learned that Shen Tunan had already arrived. He sent people to completely surround Yangquan Restaurant.

Lin Qiaosong learned that people from Rheinmetall Company were trying to pick up the batch of tungsten ore with a customs declaration form. Ignoring Huang Congyun's objection, he immediately sent people to stop them. Wei Ruolai and Niu Chunmiao came to the dock and watched with their own eyes as the batch of tungsten ore was loaded onto the ship. Kong Lingzheng poured barrels of gasoline into the sea. Lin Qiaosong came to the private room at the restaurant.

Shen Tunan received a report that people from Rheinmetall Company had transported the tungsten ore to the dock for loading onto the ship. Without a word, Lin Qiaosong rushed to the dock to intercept them. Shen Tunan followed closely behind. Seeing that the cargo ship had already left the port, Lin Qiaosong ordered to chase the ship. A raging fire ignited on the sea surface. Lin Qiaosong could only watch helplessly as the cargo ship sailed away.

Shen Tunan slapped him hard, pushing all the blame onto Lin Qiaosong. Lin Qiaosong took out the customs declaration form signed by Shen Tunan, but Shen Tunan insisted it was forged. Hans escorted that batch of tungsten ore and successfully left the port. He decided to cooperate with Wei Ruolai in the future. It turned out that Wei Ruolai had called Hans and offered to sell him the tungsten ore at a price of 65 yuan per hundred kilograms. Hans was naturally overjoyed and asked Wei Ruolai to deliver the tungsten ore to the ocean-going cargo ship at the dock tonight.

Episode 38 (Ending) Recap

In September 1934, Chiang Kai-shek personally took command of the Fifth Encirclement Campaign against the Central Soviet Area. Our army fought fiercely against the enemy at Songmaoling for seven days and nights, and was finally forced to transfer due to the disparity in forces. Lei Ming announced the Central Committee's directive for a comprehensive transfer. Niu Chunmiao and Kong Lingzheng and others were reluctant to abandon the base area's tungsten ore mine and bank. Wei Ruolai was also unwilling.

Lei Ming persuaded them to prioritize the overall situation. Wei Ruolai wanted to convert the two hundred thousand silver dollars from selling the tungsten ore into strategic supplies and send them to the front line of the Soviet Area. Niu Chunmiao and Kong Lingzheng both requested to go with him. Lei Ming couldn't refuse them and had to let them go back.

Wei Ruolai handed the money from selling the tungsten ore to Yan Youmin, asking him to buy supplies such as medicine and salt. Yan Youmin readily agreed, wanting the list of previous transactions with the Soviet Area back after the matter was concluded. Lin Qiaosong heard that Yan Youmin had sold a large batch of supplies to Wei Ruolai and decided to intercept this batch of goods. Shen Tunan analyzed that Wei Ruolai would transport them by water this time.

Yan Youmin sent people to track Lin Qiaosong, planning to seize back that batch of goods and retrieve the transaction evidence from Wei Ruolai's hands. Lin Qiaosong sent his subordinate Ganzi to secretly investigate the warehouse, where he found a batch of medicine. He reported back to Lin Qiaosong, who analyzed that Wei Ruolai would use railway transport for the supplies.

Shen Tunan felt that Wei Ruolai wouldn't make the same mistake, but Lin Qiaosong insisted that Wei Ruolai would go by rail. Shen Tunan decided to go to the station with Lin Qiaosong. Lin Qiaosong knew this operation was very dangerous. This was Wei Ruolai's last time transporting supplies to the Soviet Area, and he would definitely fight desperately. Lin Qiaosong was prepared for a final stand.

Before setting off, he told Song Meijuan the truth, admitting that he had killed Song Meijuan's brother, Song Shoutian. Song Meijuan was so angry that she gnashed her teeth. Lin Qiaosong worried that he would likely meet with misfortune this time, so he left all his savings to Song Meijuan and told Song Meijuan to find a good man to marry again. Lin Qiaosong tearfully said goodbye to Song Meijuan.

Lin Qiaosong gathered all his subordinates and gave them a pre-battle mobilization, telling them to kill Wei Ruolai at all costs, and he even showed them Wei Ruolai's portrait. Wei Ruolai saw that Yan Youmin was acting in a two-faced manner and worried that he would cause trouble at the last moment, so he told Niu Chunmiao and Kong Lingzheng and others to be prepared for a decisive battle.

Shen Tunan took Huang Congyun and boarded the train from Huangsha Station. Huang Congyun circled the carriage but did not see Wei Ruolai. He saw Secretary Xiao, Yan Youmin's subordinate, on the train, and Shen Tunan guessed that Yan Youmin wanted to double-cross them. Wei Ruolai had made meticulous arrangements beforehand, arranging for people to impersonate the stokers and attendants on the train.

Yan Youmin had arranged heavy troops at Huaxian Station, intending to intercept the goods and kill people there, but unexpectedly the train went directly past Huaxian without stopping. When Yan Youmin learned of this, he was so angry that he gritted his teeth. Secretary Xiao brought people to the engine and forced the driver to stop the train. Wei Ruolai had arranged someone to impersonate a stoker at the engine, and a fierce battle broke out between the two sides.

The more Lin Qiaosong thought about it, the more he felt something was wrong. Through various signs, he analyzed that Shen Tunan and Wei Ruolai were in league. Lin Qiaosong drew his gun and aimed it at Shen Tunan, wanting to kill him. Shen Tunan did not explain. Lin Qiaosong fired a shot at him. Huang Congyun rushed forward without hesitation to shield Shen Tunan. Lin Qiaosong fired several more shots before leaving the compartment to catch Wei Ruolai.

Lin Qiaosong brought reinforcements. Wei Ruolai, Niu Chunmiao, and Kong Lingzheng retreated while fighting. They kept retreating to the last carriage. Kong Lingzheng covered them to the last carriage, but was shot dead in the crossfire. Huang Congyun was hit by multiple bullets.

With his last breath, he spoke his innermost thoughts, saying he had known for a long time that Shen Tunan had defected to the Communist Party, but it was a pity that he could no longer follow Shen Tunan. After saying this, Huang Congyun died. Shen Tunan was relieved that he had survived because he had worn the bulletproof vest that Shen Jinzhen had given him beforehand.

Lin Qiaosong caught up to Wei Ruolai, and the two engaged in a fierce fight. Lin Qiaosong tightly clutched Wei Ruolai's neck and wouldn't let go. Fortunately, Shen Tunan arrived in time, and he shot Lin Qiaosong dead. Wei Ruolai had already guessed that Shen Tunan had been secretly helping him all along; otherwise, he would not have been able to complete the mission of transporting the tungsten ore.

Wei Ruolai looked forward to the day when he and Shen Tunan would fight side by side. Shen Tunan looked at Wei Ruolai's receding back and showed a relieved smile. The train slowly pulled into the station. The Guangdong Army had been waiting for a long time. They took the goods out of the carriages to inventory them and discovered that they were all stones, realizing they had been tricked.

It turned out that Shen Tunan had secretly passed the low price quoted by Hans to Wei Ruolai using Morse code hidden in a pen. That is how Wei Ruolai was able to quote Hans the price of 65 yuan. He transported the supplies to Jiangxi by water. In October 1934, 88,000 Red Army soldiers strategically relocated from Ruijin and Gucheng.

The Soviet Area Bank was incorporated into the column and embarked on the long journey of the Long March with the main force. Lei Ming knew everyone was reluctant to leave and encouraged them not to be disheartened, saying that they would open banks all over the country in the future. The first time Wei Ruolai left his hometown, he was full of aspirations and dreams for Great Shanghai. He gradually transformed from a naive youth into a determined revolutionary.

The second time he left his hometown, Jiangxi, Wei Ruolai firmly believed that one day he would return home with his head held high. In October 1935, Wei Ruolai arrived at the Shaanbei base area and continued to work in finance. In December 1936, Wei Ruolai accepted the organization's arrangement to go to Shanghai under an assumed name to meet with 'Lonesome Goose'. He went directly to the Shanghai Stock Exchange and saw Shen Tunan as soon as he entered. The two exchanged a smile, ready to create a new financial legend in Shanghai.
