Yang Yue desperately pleaded with Shangguan Xi not to push him away, assuring her he would not force her into anything and only wished to remain by her side to protect her. Meanwhile, Lan Qingxuan found a strange sense of peace while fishing by a river, despite the recent turmoil at Danqing Taoist Temple.

He revealed his fishing rod had no hook, explaining that he sought to feel the subtle undercurrents beneath the water's surface, a metaphor for the political situation. He admitted that Danqing Taoist Temple, though not involved in politics, was aware of court matters and suspected that the deaths of his master and Slim-jim were connected to the Yan family. Lu Yi advised him to keep such knowledge to himself and avoid getting involved.

However, Lan Qingxuan insisted on seeking justice for his temple and offered to help Lu Yi dismantle Yan Song's powerful faction. He acknowledged that while the Lu and Yan families appeared close, beneath the surface, the political waters churned with hidden currents. Lu Yi cautioned that Grand Secretary Yan still held the Emperor's favor, making his downfall incredibly difficult.

Lan Qingxuan countered that the Emperor held deep respect for Taoism, and if he could gain entry into the imperial palace, he could serve as Lu Yi's informant. With no family to worry about, he was unafraid of the risks. Lu Yi eventually agreed but stressed the importance of finding the opportune moment, given the Emperor's suspicious nature. In court, Lu Ting reported to the Emperor that Lu Yi had resolved the poisonous pills case.

He clarified that Master Yuanming's elixirs were not inherently poisonous, but his greedy apprentice had secretly altered them. With the culprit apprehended and a full confession secured, the Emperor commended both Lu Ting and his son. He ordered the immediate lifting of Xu Jing's house arrest and his return to duty. Shortly after, Grand Secretary Yan Song humbly requested permission to personally test all future imperial medicines, a gesture the Emperor deeply appreciated and granted.

Yan Song later explained to his son, Yan Shifan, that this was a strategic move to solidify their family's power. He also expressed relief that Lu Ting's report made no mention of their family. Though their plan to eliminate Xu Jing had failed, they decided to isolate him politically, aware that he would now be more vigilant.

Back at the post station, Yuan Jinxia informed Lin Ling and Mr. Beggar that she would accompany Lu Yi to Hangzhou, asking them to deliver a letter to Yang Yue. Xie Xiao immediately declared his intention to follow Yuan Jinxia wherever she went. As they parted ways, Lan Qingxuan cryptically advised Yuan Jinxia that happiness sometimes needed to be actively pursued, glancing at Lu Yi as a puzzled Jinxia walked away.

Upon arriving in Hangzhou, Lu Yi decided it would be inconvenient to investigate in their official capacities and instructed Cen Fu to procure scholar's robes for them, with Yuan Jinxia specifically requesting a male disguise. Meanwhile, Shangguan Xi and Yang Yue reached Danqing Taoist Temple, where Lan Qingxuan informed them that Lu Yi's party had departed for Hangzhou. Despite Shangguan Xi's sigh of resignation, Yang Yue cheerfully agreed to follow her. Donning her male attire, Yuan Jinxia looked strikingly handsome.

However, when Lu Yi appeared in his own robes, she was captivated by his unparalleled elegance. Ignoring Xie Xiao's attempts to get her attention, she sincerely complimented Lu Yi on his distinguished demeanor. Lu Yi suggested she stop calling him "Your Excellency" while they were in disguise, and she playfully proposed "Lu Shisan" instead. At the bustling Hangzhou market, they encountered a vendor selling paper hairpins.

Intrigued, Yuan Jinxia adorned herself with a paper bird and tried to pin a matching paper fish on Lu Yi. Recalling a "flying fish" Jinxia had once made in Yangzhou, Lu Yi accepted it. Jinxia then placated Xie Xiao with a small white rabbit hairpin and gave a butterfly one to a hesitant Cen Fu. As they walked, Yuan Jinxia teased Lu Yi about attracting female attention, to which he retorted that she was doing the same.

Just then, she spotted ruffians harassing a young woman and intervened, quickly subduing the bullies. The grateful lady, who seemed smitten with "Mr. Yuan," was then revealed to be Lu Yi's cousin, Chunyu Min. Min explained she had snuck out and asked Lu Yi to escort her home. She then invited the entire group to her family's mansion to properly thank Yuan Jinxia. At the mansion, Min's parents offered Yuan Jinxia one hundred taels of gold.

Before she could accept, Lu Yi politely declined on her behalf, claiming she never accepted monetary rewards. A pained Jinxia feigned a heartache over the lost gold. Min's parents then warmly invited the group to stay at their mansion, which Lu Yi accepted. The conversation turned to Lu Yi's marriage prospects, as he was now 22, causing Yuan Jinxia's spirits to fall as she considered the high-born lady who would one day be his wife.

Later that evening, Min brought Yuan Jinxia a bowl of soup and revealed that her mother intended to arrange a marriage between her and Lu Yi. Startled, Jinxia found the soup suddenly tasteless. Min quickly clarified that her heart already belonged to someone else, not Lu Yi. Secretly relieved, Jinxia smiled, which Min misinterpreted as a sign of affection for herself, believing their own "relationship" could blossom with a small push.

Meanwhile, on their journey back to Yangzhou, Lin Ling and Mr. Beggar encountered Yang Chengwan. Lin Ling was shocked and overjoyed to see him alive. In a private conversation, they reminisced. Lin Ling had known him in her youth as Yang Li, when he was in love with her older sister, Lin He. Lin He was later betrothed to Xia Changqing, son of Grand Secretary Xia Ran.

Yang Chengwan became an Embroidered Uniform Guard to protect her, but during the purge of the Xia family, he failed to save her. With her dying breath, Lin He entrusted him with delivering her daughter to Lin Ling, but he was apprehended and imprisoned, losing a leg in the process. The Lin family was also implicated and ruined, leading Lin Ling to a failed revenge attempt on Yan Shifan, from which Mr. Beggar saved her.

Yang Chengwan also revealed he had recently met Yang Yue and Yuan Jinxia. When Lin Ling asked about Lin He's child, he explained that his investigation revealed the girl was abducted by a human trafficker on the night of the purge and later abandoned on the road south.
