After Xie Xiao publicly confessed his feelings to Yuan Jinxia, Shangguan Xi was visibly upset and accidentally injured Yang Yue. Despite being hurt, Yang Yue did not blame her. Instead, he offered a comforting presence, stating he would not dodge if she needed to vent her frustrations on him to feel better. He then gave her a healing ointment he had brought from the capital, assuring her it would prevent a scar.

Shangguan Xi accepted the medicine before asking to be left alone. Later, Yuan Jinxia, Lu Yi, Xie Xiao, Shangguan Xi, and Yang Yue visited a night market. Xie Xiao dutifully followed Yuan Jinxia, who was captivated by the art of paper cutting and eagerly invited everyone to try it. Shangguan Xi meticulously cut a paper resembling the twin swords she and Xie Xiao practiced with at Shaolin Monastery, gifting it to him.

Xie Xiao sheepishly presented his own paper-cut, claiming it was a portrait of Yuan Jinxia, though she jokingly pointed out its lack of resemblance. Yuan Jinxia created a "Kun," a mythical flying fish, explaining her wish to become one and travel freely. Lu Yi, however, refused to participate, dismissing it as a child's activity. After Xie Xiao playfully teased him, he pulled Yuan Jinxia away, leaving Lu Yi to pay for the paper.

Xie Xiao led Yuan Jinxia to the lakeside, presenting her with a bouquet of roses. He earnestly confessed his sincere affection, explaining that after reflecting on his previous impatience, he had decided to properly court her in the hope that she would see his merits and accept him. He even quoted a romantic poem, though Yuan Jinxia interjected that she was not the maiden in the verse. From a distance, Lu Yi and Shangguan Xi observed the scene.

Seeing people release lanterns, Lu Yi remarked on humanity's tendency to pin dreams on unrealistic things, to which Shangguan Xi responded that dreams are inherently beautiful. After a long pause, Yuan Jinxia acknowledged Xie Xiao as the first man to express such feelings for her, expressing gratitude but unequivocally stating that she only considered him a brother.

A deeply disappointed Xie Xiao was left in an awkward silence as Yuan Jinxia tried to leave, but he vowed never to give up on her. Soon after, Xie Xiao bid farewell, followed by Shangguan Xi, who thanked Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia for their help. Lu Yi then instructed Yang Yue to purchase some lanterns. When Yuan Jinxia inquired about his sudden interest, Lu Yi replied that he just wanted to have a dream.

Later, Yuan Jinxia and Lu Yi sat by the lake, admiring the myriad of lanterns. Lu Yi shared that in the past, after returning from missions with blood on his hands, he would often sit by the river and close his eyes to find relaxation in the sounds of nature. He mused that Yangzhou now felt like a beautiful dream from which one was reluctant to awaken.

Lu Yi then abruptly asked Yuan Jinxia if she rejected Xie Xiao because of Shangguan Xi, recalling how Yuan Jinxia had once intentionally wounded herself for him. Stunned, Yuan Jinxia asked how he knew. Lu Yi revealed he had orchestrated the entire situation.

Realizing she had been a pawn, Yuan Jinxia grew indignant, but Lu Yi skillfully twisted the situation, implying that since she had tried to trick him and he had given her royal medicine for her wound, they were now even. Lu Yi then invited her to make a wish, offering all wishes to her. Yuan Jinxia wished for a pay raise for Department Six to help find her birth parents, and for Lu Yi to be happy and smile more.

Lu Yi responded with a slight smirk. Later, as the group celebrated Yang Chengwan's recovering leg, a severely wounded and poisoned member of the Wu'an Sect arrived. The dying man told Xie Xiao that Japanese pirates were responsible for the attack. After the man succumbed to his injuries, a grief-stricken Xie Xiao urged the doctor to re-examine him. As Yuan Jinxia inspected the wounds, Xie Xiao’s fearful overreaction about poison earned him an annoyed glance from Lu Yi.

They determined the five precise wounds were from ninjutsu, a Japanese martial art. Enraged, Xie Xiao vowed revenge, and the trio immediately headed to the reeds, the location of the attack. As Yuan Jinxia and Xie Xiao bickered, they heard boisterous Japanese pirates nearby. The trio hid, observing the pirates boasting about their loot and planning to burn down the local village.

Sensing something, the pirates drew their swords and launched hidden weapons, but Lu Yi skillfully countered, injuring some and causing the rest to flee. The three split up and apprehended them all. Yuan Jinxia discovered a token with a mysterious pattern on one of the captured pirates. Most of the pirates quickly died from self-administered poison, leaving only one survivor. The man, speaking fluent Chinese, identified himself as Wang Mazi, a local fisherman forced to be their interpreter.

As Yuan Jinxia questioned his story, Lu Yi silenced them, spotting a larger group of Japanese pirates passing by. Seizing the distraction, Wang Mazi escaped. Lu Yi decided against chasing him, opting instead to follow the larger group to find their hideout. Meanwhile, Dong Qisheng arrived at the wharf to harass Shangguan Xi, audaciously proposing marriage. She fiercely rejected him. Unable to defeat her, Dong Qisheng and his men retreated, but not before threatening her.

Shangguan Xi ordered strict vigilance at the wharf. Just then, a sect member rushed to inform her of the Japanese attack on their men. Concerned, Yang Yue accompanied her as they hurried with their men towards the reeds. Lu Yi, Yuan Jinxia, and Xie Xiao tracked the pirates to a sheer cliff, leaving subtle marks along their route. They watched the pirates ascend a makeshift ladder and followed.

At the top, they found no trace of the pirates, only a stone tablet inscribed with "Longdan Village." A strange bamboo whistle pierced the air, and Xie Xiao went to investigate. Shortly after, both Yuan Jinxia and Lu Yi suddenly collapsed, unconscious. Back at the reeds, Yang Yue and Shangguan Xi discovered the bodies of the dead pirates. Yang Yue deduced they had committed suicide by poison after a fierce fight.

Finding a dart without bloodstains, he concluded the trio was safe and then spotted a distinctive mark left by Yuan Jinxia, indicating their direction. Elsewhere, Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia regained consciousness to find themselves bound to pillars, surrounded by villagers shouting for their deaths. Lu Yi explained they had inhaled a narcotic and would be weakened for hours.
