During a dramatic confrontation, Lu Yi explained that the killer of Yun Zheyue, a famous singer, was the same person who murdered Zhou Xianyi. He revealed a Maoshan Taoist had told him that Yun Zheyue’s spirit was restless due to his unsolved murder. The apparition of Yun Zheyue declared that his killer was the woman who had secretly sung in his place. Before he could name her, Zhai Lanye, who was among the onlookers, attacked with silver needles.
Yuan Jinxia immediately identified Zhai Lanye as the murderer. As Zhai Lanye attempted to flee, Yan Shifan arrived in a lavish sedan and helped Lu Yi subdue her. Surprised by Yan Shifan's sudden appearance, Lu Yi admitted that the ghost-summoning was a ruse to expose the killer. He then questioned Zhai Lanye about her motives and her advanced martial arts skills. Zhai Lanye confessed everything. Her father was a martial artist, and she had practiced since she was young.
After her family was killed, she joined the Chunxi Troupe, where she fell in love with Yun Zheyue. When an injury ruined his voice, she secretly sang for him from backstage so he could continue performing. Though she was content with her hidden role, she grew enraged when she discovered he was using her while being in love with another woman. During a final performance, she killed him with a poison needle.
Later, she was sold as a "lean horse" in Yangzhou and met Zhou Xianyi, who promised to marry her but never did. When she learned he had embezzled 100,000 taels of silver meant for dike repairs without using any to free her, she felt utterly betrayed and killed him as well. Her confession finished, Zhai Lanye drank poison and collapsed.
Seeing her dead, Yan Shifan lost interest and departed, mockingly telling Lu Yi he would report this "drama" to the Emperor and take the credit. Later, a distraught Shangguan Xi clutched a sachet Zhai Lanye had given her, lamenting how love so often leads women to ruin. Meanwhile, after the Embroidered Uniform Guard buried Zhai Lanye, a hand burst forth from the grave.
Lu Yi revealed his suspicions about Zhai Lanye to Yuan Jinxia, noting that her residence, Zhou Xianyi's mansion, and the Chunxi Troupe's grounds all grew the same rare orchid. Moreover, the calluses on her hands were from years of practicing martial arts, not playing instruments. Though the murderer was identified, the 100,000 taels were still missing. Lu Yi suggested searching places Zhai Lanye frequented.
Yang Yue interjected that Shangguan Xi was genuinely shocked by the revelation, proving her and Xie Xiao's innocence, a conclusion Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia shared. Lu Yi remained convinced that Zhai Lanye was more than she seemed and that her death was too convenient. On his private boat, Yan Shifan met with a very much alive Zhai Lanye. He had secretly given her a fake poison during their earlier struggle.
He reminisced about how he first admired her voice years ago, and after discovering she had committed murder, he chose to protect her, even giving her the name "Lanye." However, he had a strict rule: any woman he took to the capital must have feet shorter than 6. 6 cun (approx. 20. 5 cm). Because Zhai Lanye's feet were too large, she had to remain in Yangzhou. Zhai Lanye professed her devotion, vowing to wait for him.
It was then revealed that Zhai Lanye had stolen the silver under Yan Shifan's orders and hidden it. Lu Yi deduced that three locations Zhai Lanye often visited formed a triangle around a single point: Yiye Forest. He and Yuan Jinxia went to investigate, splitting up to search. The forest was filled with a disorienting miasma, and through the haze, Yuan Jinxia encountered Zhai Lanye, realizing with a shock that she was alive. Zhai Lanye attacked her.
Lu Yi, who had also noticed the miasma, took an antidote and rushed to find Yuan Jinxia. He arrived just as Zhai Lanye was pursuing her, scaring the attacker away. Yuan Jinxia suffered a minor wound on her arm from a silver needle. Lu Yi tossed her an antidote, assuring her he had already taken one himself.
Meanwhile, Yang Yue found Shangguan Xi grieving at the spot where she had first met Zhai Lanye and brought her homemade snacks to cheer her up. Shangguan Xi recounted meeting Zhai Lanye there three years prior, after Xie Xiao had fled their wedding. Zhai Lanye had told her that she was fortunate, as all Zhai Lanye herself wanted was a stable life with one person, a wish she could never achieve.
Shangguan Xi, identifying with Zhai Lanye's pain from being unlucky in love, broke down in tears while Yang Yue awkwardly tried to comfort her. Back in Yiye Forest, the miasma had weakened both Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia, forcing them to spend the night. Anxious about being alone with him, Yuan Jinxia was tasked with gathering firewood. As they sat by the fire, her stomach rumbled. Lu Yi returned her hand cannon, telling her to hunt for food.
After she missed her shots, he silently moved behind her, guiding her hands to expertly shoot down a pigeon, leaving her stunned. After walking Shangguan Xi home, Yang Yue shyly told her she could always confide in him and awkwardly gave her the rest of the snacks. Just then, Xie Xiao appeared and teased her about spending time with Yang Yue.
In the forest, Yuan Jinxia asked Lu Yi to teach her his shooting skills, and he playfully demanded she offer something in exchange. She sang a folk tune, which stirred a deep emotion in Lu Yi. He closed his eyes to rest as she watched him, and hidden nearby, Zhai Lanye observed them but made no move. The next morning, Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia found an abandoned hut containing the 100,000 taels.
Lu Yi immediately knew they had walked into a trap. Zhai Lanye and several assassins descended and attacked them. Just then, Yan Shifan's men arrived, overpowering Zhai Lanye and seizing the silver. Yan Shifan announced that he had been investigating the case all along and would be taking the money, as it belonged to the Ministry of Works.
He also declared his interest in the "resurrected" Zhai Lanye and said he would be taking her as well, to which Lu Yi agreed. Then, to Yuan Jinxia's horror, Yan Shifan pointed at her and announced he was taking her too, to serve as his personal guard.
