Ling Chu and Zi Xuan battled a powerful Black Flood Dragon that had been causing trouble. The beast's immense power made it impossible to subdue immediately. To eliminate this menace, Ling Chu, despite Zi Xuan's warnings, used his own blood to activate the Demon Prison. Zi Xuan questioned this drastic action, knowing that a living soul would be required to close the prison again; otherwise, it would destroy the opener and all surrounding souls.

Ling Chu argued that without the blood activation, they were not a match for the Black Flood Dragon. Zi Xuan warned Bai Yaoyao, whose demon aura could drag her into the prison, to leave immediately. Bai Yaoyao confessed she had begged Sister Crane to let her come out and apologized for her past actions, specifically breaking into the Elixir Chamber, which she believed inadvertently led to this disaster. Zi Xuan reassured her not to blame herself.

However, while Zi Xuan was distracted, the Black Flood Dragon escaped the Demon Prison's range. With the dragon having escaped and no living sacrifice, the Demon Prison threatened to backlash, devouring Ling Chu's primordial spirit and all surrounding souls. Bai Yaoyao offered to be the sacrifice, but Zi Xuan refused, explaining her primordial spirit would be incinerated. To save everyone, Zi Xuan sacrificed his own deity aura, an act he would not survive.

He used his remaining power to seal the Demon Prison and destroy the Black Flood Dragon, then instructed Ling Chu to close the prison. Zi Xuan vanished from the world, his form and spirit utterly destroyed and turned to ashes. In her profound grief, Bai Yaoyao cried out his name repeatedly.

In his final moments, Zi Xuan assured her that she had always been good, despite his regret that his actions had caused her calamity and not being able to teach her more. Bai Yaoyao, desperate, offered to leave Mount Jiuxi and never appear before him again if he would just not turn to ash, pleading to know what she could do to save him. Zi Xuan, however, told her that life's calamities are fated by the heavens, not by them.

He affirmed that in his heart, she was already a true human being, but he could no longer protect her. He made her promise to live well and, recalling her love for peach blossoms, bestowed upon her the name "Bai Yaoyao." Devastated, Bai Yaoyao refused to accept his departure, questioning how she could live without him, and attempted to take her own life to follow him. Ling Chu intervened, stopping her.

He explained that Zi Xuan had sacrificed his life for theirs, and neither of them had the right to waste their lives. Bai Yaoyao blamed herself for everything, lamenting her presence at Mount Jiuxi. Ling Chu admitted that it was both their fault that Zi Xuan had turned to ashes, a debt that could never be repaid. He reiterated Zi Xuan's final wish, urging Bai Yaoyao to live on with the name "Bai Yaoyao."

A thousand years later, Bai Yaoyao tirelessly traveled the mortal world, seeking rare methods to nurture primordial spirits, showing no interest in achieving deity status; her sole desire was Zi Xuan's return. She shared a moment with Sister Crane, who had taken an important role under the Herb Deity on Penglai Heavenly Mountain. Crane chided Bai Yaoyao for constantly getting into trouble, to which Bai Yaoyao playfully replied that Crane could now heal her.

Crane, knowing Bai Yaoyao's true motivation, questioned why she was still searching for doctrines instead of focusing on becoming a deity, urging her to simply keep Zi Xuan in her heart. Bai Yaoyao revealed that she had found a tiny sliver of Zi Xuan's primordial spirit 500 years prior, and had since been nurturing it with her own heart's blood, enduring constant heartburn, and was now on the brink of success.

She vowed to never let him disappear from the world again. Simultaneously, Ling Chu, who had deliberately forgone his opportunity to become a deity a long time ago, remained on Mount Kunlun. Consumed by guilt for Zi Xuan's demise, he had been waiting for a chance to reassemble Zi Xuan's soul. He secretly stole the Soul Collecting Light, causing a cave-in, in hopes of resurrecting him.

Ling Chu activated the Light with his blood, but was puzzled why it wasn't attracting Zi Xuan's soul, confident in his thousand years of study on the secret spell. Bai Yaoyao approached Sister Crane again, requesting her help to continue the search for Zi Xuan should she and Ling Chu face punishment for their actions. Despite calling Bai Yaoyao foolish, Crane agreed.

As Ling Chu activated the Soul Collecting Light with his blood, its power not only aimed to gather Zi Xuan's spirit but also awakened ancient evils. The Light, once opened, also drew the primordial spirits of other demons, including the long-vanished Demon Emperor, threatening to turn them into formidable devils and endanger the Empyrean Heaven. The Azure and White Emperors, enraged by the theft and the ensuing chaos, quickly became aware of Ling Chu's reckless actions.

They understood that Ling Chu, haunted by guilt for Zi Xuan's demise, had stolen the precious artifact from Mount Kunlun, hoping to resurrect him, and declared him foolish for such a grave error. Bai Yaoyao, enduring the physical pain of her continued spiritual nurturing of Zi Xuan, dismissed it as nothing compared to her 500 years of heartburns.

The Emperors identified a purple smoke as the primordial spirit of the Demon Emperor, confirming he had been awakened and would plunge the world into chaos. Ling Chu accepted his wrongdoing and vowed to hunt down the Demon Emperor. However, the Emperors decreed that Ling Chu must undergo trials in the mortal world, descending to slay demons and devils as atonement until peace was restored.

Bai Yaoyao, feeling equally responsible, cried out, asking who would then guard the Soul Collecting Light. The Emperors reclaimed the Soul Collecting Light and, despite Bai Yaoyao's desperate pleas that Zi Xuan's primordial spirit was still within it, they dismissed her, stating Zi Xuan's soul had long turned to ashes. For their reckless disregard of Heaven's laws, Ling Chu was sent to the mortal world for trials, while Bai Yaoyao was condemned to perpetual darkness, never to see daylight again.

Devastated, Bai Yaoyao cried out Zi Xuan's name, refusing to believe he was truly gone. Twenty years later, in the mortal realm, Ling Chu had been reincarnated as Qi Xiao, a disciple of Master Yuan Yi at the Demon Hunter House. Returning to his master after three years of traveling and demon-slaying, Qi Xiao was affectionately scolded for his long absence.

His master informed him of recent demonic disturbances on nearby mountains, where demons were causing misery, and tasked Qi Xiao with subduing them, which he readily accepted. Qi Xiao then traveled to the mountain, where he encountered a group of demons led by the Mountain Queen.

Upon learning of Qi Xiao's demon-hunting prowess, the Mountain Queen, confident in her beauty and her thousand years of cultivation as a disciple of the Sacred Lady of Mount Li, decided to personally "charm him to oblivion" and capture him. When her attempts at seduction failed, and Qi Xiao attacked her, she retaliated by binding him with her Poison Snake Web, ordering her subordinates to prepare him for a feast.

However, Qi Xiao managed to break free, refusing to beg for mercy. Enraged, the Mountain Queen chased him, vowing to cut him into pieces. Their chase led them to the borders of the Apothecary House, whose lord was renowned as the world's greatest physician, feared by all, even demons, for his mastery of poisons and drugs.

As the Mountain Queen's subordinate warned her to retreat from the powerful physician's territory, the lord, identified as Lord Xu, passed by in his sedan chair. Noticing the injured Qi Xiao lying on the ground, Lord Xu's response was a chilling "No" when asked if they should save him.
