Upon his return to the Apothecary House, Xu Xuan immediately addressed the internal affairs of the Duan Yang School. He confronted them about the poisoned arrow shot at Bai Yaoyao and the disciple who tried to break into the prison, citing neglect of rules, disobeying orders, and meddling in external matters as grounds for expulsion.

When Xu Xuan directly asked Duan Liu if he admitted his wrongs, Duan Liu defiantly replied that he did not, stating that all members of Duan Yang School were involved and that Xu Xuan should punish all of them if he intended to punish anyone. A disciple from the Ming Jue School voiced his objection, arguing that punishing everyone for an outsider was unfair. Many other disciples also pleaded for Xu Xuan to show mercy.

Faced with this united front, Xu Xuan left the main hall without saying a word. Xu Xuan then expressed his intention to leave the Apothecary House and sever all ties with Leng Ning. He admitted that his past leniency allowed her to commit severe mistakes. He highlighted that Leng Ning was responsible for two deaths: Zhao Yu and the innocent Hong Xin.

He stressed that Hong Xin, a demon, only fell in love with a prince, and killing her merely because she was a demon contradicted his foundational principle as a physician to save all lives equally, regardless of whether they were human or demon.

Leng Ning tried to justify her actions, claiming she was only attempting to save Xu Xuan by taking the blame, and that Hong Xin was already planning to die with the prince, so she was merely granting her wish. Xu Xuan, however, insisted that Leng Ning must bear the lifelong burden of her actions.

As Xu Xuan reiterated his determination to leave, Leng Ning threatened him by asserting that no one else in the House was qualified to be the Lord if he left, since her father, the late Lord, had entrusted her to Xu Xuan's care. Disappointed by Leng Ning's cold, selfish, and overbearing transformation, Xu Xuan merely stated that from that day forward, she would have to look out for herself.

Before his departure, Xu Xuan announced his plan to select a suitable successor to lead the Apothecary House. According to the House rules, any candidate for Lord must be recognized by both schools and pass a test of medicine and poison. To test Leng Ning’s capabilities, Xu Xuan claimed to have poisoned her with the same substance he used on Hong Xin, giving her twelve hours to find the antidote.

He publicly declared that whoever could cure Leng Ning from either the Ming Jue or Duan Yang School would become the new Lord. Leng Ning, paralyzed and in distress, tried to solve the puzzle, believing Xu Xuan had altered the poison. When Song Shixiong and Duan Liu attempted to enter her room to help, she refused, insisting that this was Xu Xuan's test for her and she would not fail him.

They only gained entry to examine her after she became completely rigid. Meanwhile, Bai Yaoyao and Xiao Qing noticed a peculiar emptiness in the spiritual energy at the Fiery Grounds, sensing that something was amiss at the Apothecary House. They suspected it might be related to the depletion of spiritual energy there. Qi Xiao believed the cause was someone bearing the Fate of Greedy Wolf, as even Tao Tie lacked such power.

At the Fiery Grounds, Bai Yaoyao encountered Xu Xuan. Still resentful and believing he didn't differentiate right from wrong, she avoided conversation with him. Xu Xuan, observing her demeanor, sighed that even Bai Yaoyao did not understand him. Elsewhere, the Demon Emperor noted that two barriers sealing the black jiao had been broken and deduced, based on the Five Elements, that the next barrier should be related to water, instructing his subordinates to find a location full of spiritual energy.

As the twelve-hour deadline approached, Leng Ning’s arm turned blue, yet no one could find an antidote. However, exactly at the appointed time, her arm returned to normal. Xu Xuan then revealed he had not poisoned her at all. He had merely applied a "Powder of Disperse," which removes accumulated toxins from the body. He explained that her apparent paralysis was a psychosomatic reaction stemming from her own fear due to her recent exposure to excessive poisons.

Both Song Shixiong and Duan Liu acknowledged their errors, realizing their separate efforts to find an antidote had led them astray. Xu Xuan emphasized that only when both schools worked together could the Apothecary House thrive. He declared this his final lesson before leaving, entrusting the Apothecary House to Leng Ning, despite her having failed to realize the truth of her own condition.

The Apothecary House had a hundred-year-old tradition for those who wished to depart: they must drink poisonous wine and cross the Bridge of Fog, a path from which no one had ever returned alive. Xu Xuan, without hesitation, drank the wine and stepped onto the perilous bridge, amidst swirling miasma and flying arrows. Upon learning of Xu Xuan’s departure, Bai Yaoyao, realizing she had misunderstood his intentions regarding Hong Xin, rushed to the Apothecary House.

Qing Feng implored her to use her magical prowess to save Xu Xuan, but Bai Yaoyao believed Xu Xuan would not wish for anyone to interfere with the House's rules. She chose to wait at the exit, vowing to die with him if he did not emerge. Xu Xuan, wounded by arrows and weakened by the miasma and poisonous wine, collapsed. He discovered that crawling reduced the miasma's effect, but he defiantly chose to stand and walk out.

After a tense period of waiting, Xu Xuan emerged from the bridge, injured but otherwise unharmed. Leng Ning, consumed by resentment, let him and Bai Yaoyao leave. Meanwhile, at Jinshan Temple, Qi Xiao and his fellow monks were facing financial difficulties after Zhao Yu’s death had deterred visitors and donations. When a young monk reported that a pilgrim wished to stay for some time, Qi Xiao, hoping for a generous donation, immediately ordered the best room to be prepared.

This pilgrim turned out to be Xu Xuan. He explained to Qi Xiao that the Apothecary House’s harsh departure ritual was a test of resolve. The poisonous wine he drank was not meant to kill him but to neutralize the miasma on the Bridge of Fog. Had he crawled out in an attempt to survive, the poisonous wine would have eventually claimed his life. It was precisely his defiance, his strong will to walk out on foot, that allowed the wine to neutralize the miasma, ensuring his survival without serious harm.
