Sunshine by My Side Episode 14 Recap
> Sunshine by My Side Recap
Luo Meijuan and Sheng Xiangqian, having spent over an hour preparing a grand feast, patiently awaited the return of Sheng Yang and Jian Bing. Dressed in a new silver outfit, Luo Meijuan playfully sought reassurance from Sheng Xiangqian about her appearance. He teased her about the lingering cooking smells, prompting her to playfully chide him before they settled into a nostalgic conversation.
Sheng Xiangqian fondly recalled their first meeting, particularly her almost chopping off her hand while trying to cook for his parents, and how he impulsively kissed her for the first time that day. Both lamented the passage of time, reminiscing about caring for their elders and now their son, wishing for a time when their children would care for them.
Upon Sheng Yang and Jian Bing's arrival, Sheng Xiangqian and Luo Meijuan executed an elaborate "highest etiquette" welcome, involving dramatic gestures and loud greetings, which amused Jian Bing. Luo Meijuan, having prepared eight dishes, expressed mild annoyance upon realizing Sheng Yang had only brought Jian Bing, as she had expected more colleagues. Despite her initial surprise, they warmly invited Jian Bing inside. Meanwhile, Fang Mu returned home, having been stood up by Jian Bing for their evening plans.
His nephew, Hao Junjie, encouraged him to be more proactive in pursuing a relationship, reminding him of his long single status since his divorce from Hao Junjie's ex-aunt. Fang Mu, already in a foul mood, snapped at Hao Junjie, expressing frustration over the years spent prioritizing Hao Junjie's upbringing, which had left him no time for a personal life. Hao Junjie quickly backed down.
During dinner, Sheng Xiangqian warmly welcomed Jian Bing, noting the "fate" between her and the Sheng family, since she knew him from an advertisement ten years prior and now worked with Sheng Yang. Luo Meijuan effusively thanked Jian Bing for helping her fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming an actress, revealing that Jian Bing's use of her raw footage in the advertisement had made her "shine."
Jian Bing humbly credited Sheng Yang for sharing details of his parents' relationship, which inspired the ad, and praised Luo Meijuan's natural acting. Luo Meijuan beamed, expressing how Jian Bing had made her feel "over the moon" and asking Sheng Xiangqian if she resembled Audrey Hepburn. Luo Meijuan then shared her feelings of "emptiness" in her unchanging life now that Sheng Yang was grown.
Jian Bing thoughtfully responded with a quote from "The Moon and Sixpence," explaining that Luo Meijuan, unlike others, looked beyond ordinary material life to a "charming spiritual world," likening her to someone who "looked up at the moon when there were sixpence everywhere." Luo Meijuan was deeply moved, feeling completely understood, and declared Jian Bing her "sworn friend," to Sheng Xiangqian's amusement. When Luo Meijuan asked about her personal life, Jian Bing calmly revealed she had recently divorced.
Jian Bing explained her divorce was a normal outcome of "different pacing" in their "love marathon," where running alone could be "more comfortable and happy," allowing one to enjoy the scenery. She emphasized her focus on self-love over loving others. Luo Meijuan was so impressed that she exclaimed Jian Bing made her "want a divorce too," before Sheng Xiangqian quickly interjected. Concurrently, Hao Junjie, trying to set up Fang Mu and Jian Bing, asked Jian Shuang about Jian Bing's preferences.
Jian Shuang mused that Jian Bing preferred "scoundrels," concluding that Fang Mu was "not bad enough" for someone who valued the journey over a constant companion. Luo Meijuan pulled out a photo album, showing Jian Bing childhood photos of Sheng Yang and remarking how much he resembled a girl. Concerned about Sheng Yang's lack of a romantic partner at 26, she asked Jian Bing, as his leader and an elder, to help find a suitable girlfriend for him.
Luo Meijuan also revealed she knew Sheng Yang had tickets to a David Hockney art exhibition, assuming he planned to go with Pan Rou, the daughter of her friend Limei. Sheng Yang quickly denied any interest in Pan Rou. Later that night, Sheng Yang called Jian Bing, urgently clarifying that he and Pan Rou were just colleagues and hoped she hadn't taken his mother's matchmaking seriously. Jian Bing calmly acknowledged his mother's suggestions.
As he pressed on, she politely ended the conversation by feigning a work call. The next day, Pan Rou confronted Sheng Yang with the David Hockney tickets, explaining that his mother had given them to her mother, who then passed them to her. Sheng Yang was taken aback, realizing his mother had given away the tickets he intended for Jian Bing.
Seeing his predicament, his colleague Song Chen posed a series of "soul-searching questions" about love and jealousy to help Sheng Yang understand his feelings. Sheng Yang then discreetly messaged Jian Bing, asking for first-date etiquette for a "colleague." Jian Bing provided practical advice. At the exhibition, Pan Rou was disappointed to find Song Chen, who explained Sheng Yang had "important business."
Annoyed that she had wasted her elaborate makeup and that Sheng Yang had stood her up, Pan Rou tried to leave. Song Chen, attempting to stop her, accidentally tore her expensive bag. He apologized profusely and promised to replace it. Meanwhile, Liang Shanshan becomes heavily intoxicated at a bar after a client meeting. As a male waiter helps her, Xue Yiming, who is there with his girlfriend, intervenes and claims to be Shanshan's husband.
When his girlfriend appears, Shanshan plays along, calling herself his wife. The girlfriend, furious, calls Xue Yiming a scumbag and storms off. To compensate Pan Rou, Song Chen took her to a high-end store. Pan Rou selected a new bag for 16,800 yuan. Then, in a playful spree, she picked out expensive clothing and accessories for both of them, insisting on paying the 40,828 yuan total herself.
Shortly after, her mother, Limei, called, having received a bank alert for the large transaction, and scolded her for the exorbitant spending. Song Chen advised Pan Rou to return most of the items. She agreed, keeping the new bag for herself and leaving Song Chen with a white T-shirt.
