Cao Jianjun, celebrating his recent recognition, drank heavily with his classmates, ignoring Yang Shu's repeated pleas to stop. Yang Shu constantly reminded his master that he had consumed a significant amount of alcohol and would get too drunk to function. However, Cao Jianjun, feeling challenged, asked Yang Shu if he despised him, dismissing his concerns and stating he had a high tolerance for alcohol.

Their friends, upon leaving, also cautioned Cao Jianjun against driving under the influence and reminded him to use a designated driver. As Yang Shu prepared to drive Cao Jianjun home, Cao Jianjun realized he had left his phone in the private room. Yang Shu quickly offered to retrieve it, instructing his master to wait. While Yang Shu was inside, a restaurant staff member asked Cao Jianjun to move his car to make space for another vehicle.

Despite his intoxicated state, Cao Jianjun attempted to comply, but accidentally collided with another car on the road. The female driver, enraged, immediately confronted Cao Jianjun, accusing him of breaking traffic rules and driving too fast. Seeing a traffic police officer nearby, she hailed him for help, bypassing the need to call the police. The traffic officer arrived and requested both drivers' licenses.

Cao Jianjun, still in a drunken haze, tried to pull rank by revealing he was a police officer and implying they were "family," suggesting the officer be lenient. However, the female driver, realizing Cao Jianjun was a policeman, pointed out his strong smell of alcohol and insisted he was driving under the influence, demanding the officer handle the situation impartially. Just then, Yang Shu returned.

He quickly tried to defuse the situation, apologizing to the female driver and explaining that Cao Jianjun had no intention of driving, merely moving his car, and that he himself had come to drive Cao Jianjun home. He even offered to compensate her for the damage to her car. Yet, the female driver remained unyielding, stating she only wanted to see how the traffic police would handle a drunken police officer.

As Cao Jianjun continued to argue defiantly, Yang Shu desperately tried to quiet him, reminding him how serious the repercussions would be if his actions became known to their station. The traffic officer instructed Yang Shu to drive Cao Jianjun to the traffic police station. The female driver, having recorded the entire incident on her phone, departed, vowing to ensure justice was served.

On the way to the traffic police station, Yang Shu admonished Cao Jianjun for displaying his police ID, pointing out that it only made matters worse. Cao Jianjun, still defiant, boasted about his dangerous work compared to traffic police. Yang Shu then attempted to call Wang Shouyi for help, but Cao Jianjun stopped him, insisting that Yang Shu keep the matter a secret, fearing the embarrassment it would bring.

At the station, Yang Shu again pleaded with the traffic officer, emphasizing Cao Jianjun's recent bravery in solving a major case and suggesting he only drank excessively out of happiness. The traffic officer dismissed Yang Shu’s lengthy explanation, stating he talked too much. Feeling overwhelmed, Yang Shu finally called Wang Shouyi, who was out shopping with his wife. Upon hearing the news, Wang Shouyi immediately rushed to the station.

At the station, the traffic officer administered an alcohol test to Cao Jianjun, who reluctantly complied after the officer reminded him that it was his job. The officer sternly informed Cao Jianjun that he had made a grave mistake. While the officer momentarily left the room, Cao Jianjun, realizing the severity of his situation, grabbed his car keys and fled. Wang Shouyi, arriving just then, witnessed Cao Jianjun’s escape, shouting his name in dismay.

The traffic police immediately coordinated an interception, and Cao Jianjun was apprehended after crashing his car again around a corner. Wang Shouyi was heartbroken by the turn of events. Sitting distraught with Yang Shu, Wang Shouyi explained the grim reality: "Two accidents and a hit-and-run, Jianjun is doomed." Yang Shu, blaming himself for not stopping his master, argued that Cao Jianjun was simply a straightforward person who got carried away by the joy of his recent meritorious service.

He offered to take responsibility, but Wang Shouyi reminded him that everyone must be accountable for their own life and that some things were beyond their ability to fix. He confirmed that Cao Jianjun would lose his police job and likely face criminal charges, emphasizing that the severity of the sentence depended on his alcohol level and the additional charges of two accidents and fleeing the scene.

Wang Shouyi then sought out Captain Wei of the traffic police to request a meeting with Cao Jianjun before he was taken into formal custody, citing the need to transfer Cao Jianjun's ongoing police work.

During this discussion, Wang Shouyi was informed that Cao Jianjun's alcohol test results showed a blood alcohol content of 127 mg per 100 ml, far exceeding the drunk driving limit of 80 mg, classifying it as severe drunk driving, compounded by two accidents and fleeing the scene. After some persuasion, Captain Wei allowed Wang Shouyi and Yang Shu to see Cao Jianjun.

Cao Jianjun, upon seeing Wang Shouyi, broke down in tears, apologizing profusely for embarrassing the police station, which had recently been honored. He desperately suggested sacrificing his second-class merit to atone for his mistakes and be allowed to remain a police officer, but Wang Shouyi angrily rebuked him for such foolish talk. Yang Shu, also emotional, apologized and reaffirmed Cao Jianjun as his master, stating that this incident was a painful but profound lesson.

Cao Jianjun then asked Wang Shouyi to keep the matter secret from his wife, Zhou Hui, out of concern for her constant struggles with her mother and his desire to shield her from further distress, lamenting that he had failed her and their child. Before they left, Cao Jianjun tearfully asked Wang Shouyi if he could ever be a police officer again.

On their way to inform Zhou Hui, Wang Shouyi mentioned that Cao Jianjun’s phone had been ringing continuously, likely Zhou Hui, but Cao Jianjun hadn't answered, unsure how to explain the situation. Yang Shu, still processing the gravity of the situation, wondered if his master's life was truly over if he couldn't be a police officer anymore.

Wang Shouyi comforted him, saying that life isn't over just because one can't be a police officer, though he acknowledged that for Cao Jianjun, it might feel that way. Upon arriving at Zhou Hui's home, they found her distraught, repeatedly calling Cao Jianjun. Wang Shouyi gently broke the news, informing her that Cao Jianjun had driven drunk, caused two accidents, fled the scene, and was now detained by the traffic police.

Zhou Hui was shocked and tearful, but her main concern was Cao Jianjun's well-being. Wang Shouyi, while reassuring her that he was physically unharmed and no one else was seriously injured, warned her of the severe legal consequences and the high probability that he would lose his job. Zhou Hui, still hoping, implored Wang Shouyi to use his influence to help Cao Jianjun keep his career.

Wang Shouyi, however, explained that while some things could be helped, others, like legal responsibilities, could not be avoided. He pledged the station's full support for her and their family in handling domestic matters. Zhou Hui, regaining her composure, stated she could manage as long as Cao Jianjun was safe. She thanked them for bringing her the difficult news.

As they prepared to leave, Yang Shu, full of regret, apologized to Zhou Hui for not taking better care of his master. Zhou Hui, with a stoic expression, acknowledged Yang Shu, mentioned that Cao Jianjun often spoke highly of him, but then firmly told him to forget Cao Jianjun, stating that their paths would no longer cross.
