No matter how chaotic the outside world was, Cheng Shaoshang remained calm within the Changqiu Palace. The deep, secluded palace was like a strong protective wall, shielding her from all malicious or kind rumors. Even so, Luo Jitong still found a way to approach Changqiu Palace. First, she humbly apologized to Cheng Shaoshang.

After receiving Cheng Shaoshang’s forgiveness, she said she would return to the northwest to live out the rest of her days and give up her obsession with Ling Buyi, only wishing to repay Empress Xuan before leaving. Empress Xuan was now bedridden, her thoughts still lingering on Huo Buyi. Earlier, there had still been hope she could make it to the end of the year, but now it seemed even surviving the next month would be difficult.

When Huo Buyi visited Changqiu Palace and saw Empress Xuan lying ill in bed, he was filled with deeper remorse and self-blame. Empress Xuan revealed that Cheng Shaoshang and Yuan Shen were not engaged, and she hoped Huo Buyi would cherish this opportunity and not fail Cheng Shaoshang again. Using the excuse of treating Empress Xuan, Luo Jitong deliberately lured Cheng Shaoshang out of the palace.

The journey was filled with silence and unease, casting a cold atmosphere that made one uncomfortable. Cheng Shaoshang gradually sensed something was wrong and prepared to get off the carriage to return to the palace, planning to visit the doctor another day with generous gifts. However, Luo Jitong spoke convincingly and refused to have the coachman stop. With no other options, Cheng Shaoshang had to act accordingly to the situation.

Liang Qiu Fei sent a message to Changqiu Palace, truthfully reporting that Cheng Shaoshang had followed Luo Jitong out of the city toward the outskirts. Knowing Luo Jitong's character, Huo Buyi immediately rode after them. Meanwhile, the carriage reached a remote area, and Luo Jitong revealed her true face.

Jealous that Cheng Shaoshang was the one Huo Buyi constantly thought of, she attempted to harm her—believing it was better to be hated by Huo Buyi forever than to be completely forgotten. Though Cheng Shaoshang resisted with all her strength, her body was ultimately too frail compared to Luo Jitong, who had long lived in the northwest. Fortunately, Huo Buyi arrived just in time.

To protect Cheng Shaoshang, he grasped the sharp blade with bare hands, letting his blood flow freely. As they neared the edge of a cliff, Huo Buyi leapt onto the carriage, grabbed the reins, and at the last critical moment, held Cheng Shaoshang and jumped out, while Luo Jitong and the carriage plunged off the cliff. Due to the sudden event, the two, though avoiding the fall, had not yet reached the cliff top.

Huo Buyi could have flown up alone using his lightness skill, but he refused to abandon Cheng Shaoshang. Clinging tightly to the rock face, he chose to speak his hidden truth: ever since they pledged their bond five years ago, he had regarded Cheng Shaoshang as his wife. So to him, if Cheng Shaoshang were to die, he would not survive alone.

Cheng Shaoshang was moved, and before she could speak, the Liang brothers arrived just in time and rescued them using vines. Just as Huo Buyi was about to have someone escort Cheng Shaoshang back, they received an urgent imperial summons—Empress Xuan might not survive the day. Huo Buyi and Cheng Shaoshang rushed back to Changqiu Palace, where all the princes and princesses were kneeling in the inner chambers. Behind the screen, Empress Xuan's cheeks were sunken, her complexion sickly yellow.

Sitting by the bed, Emperor Wen was overcome with sorrow and asked if she had any final wishes. Empress Xuan lamented that the past could not be relived, nor could it be changed. If the late Emperor Li had not ruled so incompetently, perhaps Emperor Wen would still be the upright youth who loved reading and farming, living peacefully in the countryside with the one he loved, working by day and resting by night. But fate had taken another path.

Empress Xuan followed her uncle’s arrangement and married Emperor Wen, causing all three of them to live lives full of forbearance and regret. She hoped the younger generation would not follow in her footsteps. She then urged Cheng Shaoshang and Huo Buyi to rekindle their bond, to always follow their hearts, and to cherish what they had now to avoid future regret.

As for her years of marriage with Emperor Wen, she did not regret marrying him, but she wished never to meet him again in the next life. As her voice faded, Empress Xuan leaned into Emperor Wen's embrace and passed away, ending her pitiful life. The princes, princesses, and palace maids all burst into loud cries.

Cheng Shaoshang stumbled out of the chamber like a lost child, wandering aimlessly in the heavy rain until Huo Buyi found her unconscious and carried her back to the Cheng residence. After settling Cheng Shaoshang, Huo Buyi met with Cheng Shi and Xiao Yuanyi in a side hall, informing them of Empress Xuan’s passing. He then prepared to leave. Cheng Shi quickly called him back, scolding him for failing Cheng Shaoshang’s deep affection, while Xiao Yuanyi sighed at fate’s cruelty, saying whether they could be together again depended on how Huo Buyi would act in the future.
