As the Spring Festival approached, auspicious snow fell first. Ling Buyi stood atop the city wall with the Liang brothers, discussing the matter of Xu Jinzhong. Although all leads had been cut off, Ling Buyi was convinced that since Xu Jinzhong was eager to sell the military equipment, he would eventually reach out to potential buyers. People leave traces, and carts leave ruts—he would surely slip up eventually.
Just as these words were spoken, they suddenly spotted the Cheng family’s carriage. Ling Buyi gazed at it for a long time before ordering the military to prepare New Year’s supplies. After all, this was his first year in the capital. A subordinate truthfully reported that gossip was already spreading outside; the Marquis of Chengyang had repeatedly requested an audience with the emperor, apparently to invite Ling Buyi to reunite at home. Upon hearing this, Ling Buyi immediately refused.
On the day of the house relocation, before dawn had fully broken, Cheng Shaoshang donned her heavy cloak and joined the crowd streaming into the new residence. As a noble family’s estate, the mansion was naturally grand and imposing. Cheng Shi stood at the gate, smiling and welcoming everyone. Because Old Madam Cheng believed in spirits and superstitions, she had specially invited exorcists for a ceremonial ritual.
As the main doors opened, the exorcism performance began with ancient chanting and the clanging of gongs and cymbals. Cheng Shaoshang, previously drowsy, became energized, watching the exorcists sing and dance around the courtyard. Priests standing nearby shouted festive blessings to drive away evil and welcome the new. Though it was still dark, the torches made the place as bright as day, marking the joyful completion of the relocation.
Inside the main hall, Old Madam Cheng was overjoyed, proclaiming she would hold a grand banquet and collect many gifts. She then went off to inspect the sleeping quarters. Taking the opportunity, Cheng Shaoshang sat on the floor casually, her posture lax. Xiao Yuanyi scolded her to sit properly. Compared to Cheng Yang, she did seem a bit improper. Cheng Yang and Cheng Shi quickly stepped in to smooth things over.
Cheng Shaoshang refrained from saying more, adjusted her posture, and complained to her father, urging him to rest early as his upcoming expedition would surely be exhausting. At first, Cheng Shi was startled, curious how his daughter knew about the military order in court. Only after Cheng Shaoshang explained her reasoning did he laugh heartily, praising her intelligence. Upon exiting the main hall and entering the courtyard, Lianfang couldn't hide her excitement and looked around.
Seeing some old idle furniture, Cheng Shaoshang got the idea to turn it into a swing chair, so she could sit on it to admire the moon and stars in the future. Lianfang, moved by the idea, offered to help. Hearing the noise, Xiao Yuanyi arrived with a stern face, scolding them, but before leaving, she glanced a few more times at the wood, and a smile unknowingly crept onto her lips—clearly, she approved of her daughter’s actions.
Cheng Zhi returned to the capital with his wife Sang Shunhua, accompanied by Cheng Shaoshang’s second brother Cheng Song, and her third brother Cheng Shaogong, who was born on the same day as her. Cheng Shaoshang identified her two elder brothers through observation. Cheng Song, being a military officer, was naturally brave and dignified. Cheng Shaogong’s youthful appearance, in her eyes, made him look weak, and the usually sharp-tongued third brother found himself speechless when retorted by his younger sister.
As for Third Master Cheng Zhi, he was a strikingly handsome man in his thirties, with refined features, bright as lush green mountains. The woman beside him was the daughter of the Master of White Deer Mountain, graceful and gentle in demeanor, which made Cheng Shaoshang feel fond of her. However, it was Cheng Zhi who had proposed the marriage, so although Old Madam Cheng knew her son had married up, she still disliked Sang Shunhua.
At the banquet, the dishes were abundant, and Old Madam Cheng’s enthusiasm burned like fire—but it was aimed solely at Cheng Zhi. She hardly acknowledged her daughter-in-law, occasionally responding to Sang Shunhua’s respectful greetings but mostly ignoring her. Cheng Shaoshang couldn’t contain her curiosity and subtly leaned toward her two brothers, whispering to get the backstory.
Cheng Shaoshang lamented that Second Uncle had buried his talents for over a decade for the sake of the family, yet Old Madam Cheng showed not a shred of compassion. Everyone knew what it meant to be snobbish, but even parents could be snobbish toward their own children. If parents judged their children by appearance or status, they were truly not worthy of respect.
Xiao Yuanyi, noticing the three siblings chatting happily, told Cheng Song and Cheng Shaogong to also care more for Cheng Yang, making the atmosphere slightly awkward. On the night of the Spring Festival reunion, Xiao Yuanyi took Cheng Yang with her to handle household affairs, ensuring everything was in order and preparing ancestral and divine offerings. Seeing how capable and sensible Cheng Yang was, Xiao Yuanyi grew even more disappointed in Cheng Shaoshang.
Just then, Cheng Shaoshang returned from outside with her brothers. Her mood instantly dropped, and she turned to her room in disappointment. The Marquis of Chengyang’s residence held a banquet for guests. Unexpectedly, Ling Buyi arrived uninvited with hostile intentions, publicly questioning Ling Yi about the whereabouts of his mother. Lady Chunyu was not Ling Buyi’s biological mother, and before she could speak, Princess Yuchang also arrived.
Her beautiful eyes were full of affection as she looked at Ling Buyi, unafraid of his indifference, persistently expressing her feelings. Ling Buyi stood alone in Xinghua Courtyard, thinking of his mother. When he happened to see a lantern, he immediately thought of the lamps handmade by Xu Jinzhong and realized it could be an important clue. The Liang brothers retrieved the lantern without issue.
Upon hearing that lanterns during the Lantern Festival always came in pairs, Ling Buyi deduced that Xu Jinzhong was using lanterns to communicate with the buyer. He decided to personally attend the Lantern Festival. Madam Fu, who served Cheng Yang, believed she was far too considerate and would suffer for it sooner or later. Everyone knew Old Madam Cheng favored boys over girls.
Now that the second household was in decline, if Cheng Yang did not secure her position, she might never have a chance to rise. So Madam Fu secretly conspired with the maid Changpu to help their mistress gain prominence. Although the two elder brothers had not spent much time with Cheng Shaoshang, they already showed a desire to grow closer. Cheng Shaogong noticed her desk was too short and gave her the one their eldest brother had gifted him.
Lianfang was sent to retrieve the desk but encountered Changpu on the way. Using the excuse of checking the design, Changpu had the desk carried directly to Cheng Yang’s study.
