Ever since the betrothal, the Cheng household had become lively. Ling Buyi stationed guards around the front and back courtyards to patrol day and night, under the pretense of protection. The Cheng brothers followed Ling Buyi in martial arts training. At first, they were enthusiastic, but soon they were overwhelmed. Even Cheng Shi had to admit defeat—it was just too much. Cheng Shaoshang was not even fully awake when Ling Buyi carried her, bedding and all, into the courtyard.

When she opened her eyes, she saw the yard filled with weapons and heard the constant shouts of training. Cheng Song was holding a stone while practicing a horse stance. Cheng Shaogong was struggling to shoot arrows. Even the delicate Cheng Yang was forced to practice swordplay. The servants, watched closely by the Black Armor Guards, didn’t dare slack off for a moment and were drenched in sweat.

Because Ling Buyi treated everyone equally, Cheng Shaoshang could not avoid the training. She had to hold ceramic basins in both hands while keeping her head still. Meanwhile, Ling Buyi, training with added weights, showed no sign of exhaustion—he looked perfectly at ease. After an hour, Cheng Shaoshang asked Lianfang to prepare some cold drinks to cool everyone down. Unexpectedly, Ling Buyi replaced it with hot tea, claiming it was for their health. Everyone instantly felt hopeless.

The peaceful first three days after the betrothal had led the Cheng family to believe that the worst they would face was sharing meals with the groom-to-be. But the current brutal training had left a lasting trauma in everyone's heart. Since the marriage was already set, even though Cheng Shaoshang had thoughts of breaking the engagement, she was harshly scolded by Old Madam Cheng, who insisted that the marriage must go through, even threatening her life.

The ever-wise Xiao Yuanyi was the first to sneak away, followed by Cheng Shi and the cousins, leaving Cheng Shaoshang to deal with the mess alone. That night, Cheng Shaoshang climbed over the wall to visit the Wan family and vented her frustrations to Wan Qiqi over drinks. In just a few days, Cheng Shaoshang began to miss Lou Yao.

They were of the same age, and even if Lou Yao knew early spring wine wasn't ideal, at least he wouldn’t interfere under various pretexts. Ling Buyi, however, was different. He grew up under the care of the Emperor and Empress and was independent from a young age. Whether studying or going to battle, he had his own opinions. So, unlike Lou Yao who always went along with Cheng Shaoshang, Ling Buyi expected Cheng Shaoshang to follow his lead.

It was this kind of life that Cheng Shaoshang found tiresome and unbearable. Wan Qiqi listened to Cheng Shaoshang’s complaints and still believed she had feelings for Ling Buyi; otherwise, why would she agree to marry him? But Cheng Shaoshang didn’t know what liking someone meant. Suddenly, Ling Buyi appeared close by and, before she could react, he picked her up and carried her home.

Xiao Yuanyi believed that even though they were engaged, they weren’t yet married, and should still respect the boundaries between men and women. However, Ling Buyi didn’t intend to act inappropriately—it was just that Cheng Shaoshang clung to him and refused to let go. Xiao Yuanyi, watching her daughter act so indecently, felt deeply embarrassed. Meanwhile, Cheng Song went to the carriage to check on Wan Qiqi, only to find her dead drunk and causing a ruckus inside.

In a moment of panic, Cheng Song kissed her. The next morning, Cheng Shaoshang woke up with a hangover, with no memory of the previous night. She only learned what happened through Lianfang. Ling Buyi personally brought her hangover soup and even ordered a special peach blossom brew that wouldn't make her easily drunk. However, Cheng Shaoshang bluntly said she preferred “Thousand Miles Drunk,” her tone cold and distant. Ling Buyi noticed that Cheng Shaoshang was unhappy.

The growing distance between them was mainly due to their differing views. Simply put, Cheng Shaoshang was headstrong, but Ling Buyi was even more so. Because Cheng Shaoshang was naturally resolute and decisive, and Ling Buyi was firm and relentless, every encounter between them often ended in conflict. Cheng Shaoshang couldn't bear Ling Buyi’s overbearing nature nor treat him like an ordinary person. Some things were just too hard to tolerate.

She hoped they could go their separate ways, and her words hinted at breaking the engagement. In truth, Ling Buyi had grown up in the military and had never experienced familial affection. He didn’t know how to get along with family. Unfortunately, while he tried hard to change, Cheng Shaoshang failed to notice. The two eventually parted on bad terms. After Ling Buyi left the Cheng household, Cheng Shaoshang remained immersed in her sorrow.

When she heard that Ling Buyi had cared for her all night without once complaining about her behavior, she felt a whirlwind of emotions. Just as she was about to go out to see her parents, she saw a new pair of snakeskin shoes at the door. She then realized that Ling Buyi had hunted a giant python and made them especially for her to prevent her from catching cold by going barefoot.

Cheng Shi and Xiao Yuanyi had already noticed the unusual tension between their daughter and Ling Buyi, but they didn’t take it seriously at first, thinking it was just a little lovers’ quarrel. But upon learning that Cheng Shaoshang had brought up breaking the engagement herself, they immediately urged her to reconsider. In this matter, Ling Buyi had done nothing wrong. Their conversations and interactions were always pleasant, which proved they liked each other.

No one in this world can live completely according to their own desires. Moreover, Xiao Yuanyi felt that since Cheng Shaoshang had agreed to the marriage, backing out so abruptly was not the behavior of a virtuous person. Such actions were merely exploiting Ling Buyi’s affection. Cheng Shi and Xiao Yuanyi, seeing the changes in their daughter’s expression, continued to talk about the ways of husband and wife. They even adopted a strategy of retreating to advance.

They originally joined the army not in pursuit of wealth or status. If Cheng Shaoshang truly didn’t like Ling Buyi, she could resign and return to the countryside, and they would support her unconditionally. Sure enough, Cheng Shaoshang was deeply conflicted. She returned to her room, sat motionless by the window, and recalled her parents’ words, Lianfang’s words, and her experiences with Ling Buyi. As the lamps lit up, Cheng Shaoshang suddenly understood. She stood up and went straight to the main hall, declaring that she was willing to marry Ling Buyi.
