After the banquet ended, Ling Buyi personally escorted Cheng Shaoshang back home. The carriage was quiet, the sound of wheels turning could be heard outside. Ling Buyi started a conversation, curious why she seemed unhappy. Cheng Shaoshang admitted she didn’t want to rely on his power. But Ling Buyi didn’t understand. To him, a married couple was one entity—why worry about who relied on whom? He was willing to give her everything.

Cheng Shaoshang’s actions, in his eyes, were overly sensitive and self-tormenting. She feared that marrying Ling Buyi would mean living by his rules. When Cheng Shaoshang took out a cake from her handkerchief to eat, Ling Buyi stopped her, saying eating after noon was bad for her health. However, Cheng Shaoshang disliked being controlled and refused to explain. Just as Ling Buyi was feeling lost, a report came from outside the carriage about Xicun village.

He had someone escort Cheng Shaoshang home, then went to investigate after learning Han Wu hadn’t returned and might be in danger. Previously, canceling the engagement with the Lou family had already displeased Old Madam Cheng. Now that Cheng Shaoshang was betrothed to Ling Buyi, Old Madam Cheng was overjoyed. Especially since Ling Buyi was Emperor Wen’s adopted son, equivalent to royalty, with far greater status than Lou Yao.

She quickly ordered servants to clean the courtyard in preparation for the betrothal gifts. However, Ling Buyi had not yet sent the birth charts, and Xiao Yuanyi thought Old Madam Cheng was celebrating too early. Old Madam Cheng insisted Xiao Yuanyi must secure this marriage. Just then, a message arrived: the Chunyu family claimed illness as an excuse to delay the engagement ceremony. The Cheng household was furious.

The Princess of Ruyang believed that as long as no betrothal gifts were exchanged and the birth charts were not swapped, the engagement didn’t count. The Princess of Yuchang still had a chance to marry Ling Buyi. Unexpectedly, Ling Buyi had someone request the Emperor to arrange the wedding. The next day, the old Prince would personally bring the betrothal gifts.

The old Prince, none other than the Prince of Ruyang, was a man of simple desires and reclusive ideals, and shared no real affection with his wife. But the Princess of Ruyang had leveraged a past favor from Emperor Wen to enjoy decades of wealth and now wanted the Prince to sabotage Cheng Shaoshang and Ling Buyi’s marriage. Emperor Wen fully assumed the fatherly role and ordered the Prince of Ruyang to deliver the betrothal gifts to the Cheng family.

The scene was grand, drawing envy from many, though Cheng Shaoshang remained unhappy. The Prince quietly wandered into a side courtyard and saw Cheng Shaoshang venting her emotions by pounding a wooden table. Initially intending to scold her, after a conversation, his opinion of her changed. He decided to support the marriage, as compensation for his own failed relationship. Upon learning of this, the Princess of Ruyang confronted the Prince with her granddaughter.

The Princess of Yuchang, wanting to marry Ling Buyi, was even willing to share a husband. The Prince found it ridiculous and scolded the Princess for her greed and Yuchang’s spoiled ways. He ordered the Princess of Yuchang to find a husband soon or be sent to a temple. Ling Buyi carefully searched the area around Xicun and finally found Han Wu’s clue—two short and two long sticks—indicating safety.

It seemed Han Wu, knowing he was being pursued, left the clue and hid elsewhere. He would contact Ling Buyi himself later. With the confusion resolved, Ling Buyi decided to return to the city that very night to apologize to the Cheng family. Liang Qiuqi thought Ling Buyi looked far too grim, as if he were going to interrogate rather than apologize.

Ling Buyi took his advice and asked the Liang brothers to teach him amusing stories to leave a better impression on the Cheng family. The whole Cheng family was eating in the main hall. Cheng Shaoshang still believed Xiao Yuanyi didn’t care about her. Normally hot-tempered, Xiao Yuanyi was unusually calm. Even Cheng Yang and the Cheng brothers couldn’t bear it and spoke up for their mother.

Cheng Song and Cheng Shaogong whispered behind their sister, thinking her repeated provocations must be because Ling Buyi hadn’t come personally to propose. They decided to give him a hard time when he arrived. Just then, the Black Armored Guards appeared with great momentum, and Ling Buyi entered to apologize sincerely. Still, the Cheng family interpreted it differently. Coming from humble origins, their family was used to lively meals.

But with Ling Buyi at the table, the atmosphere became cold and awkward. Ling Buyi sensed the odd mood and quickly shared some newly learned jokes, even laughing loudly to break the tension. He offered drinks all around, and the Cheng brothers dared not refuse. Old Madam Cheng soon arrived, beaming with joy at the sight of Ling Buyi. From that day on, having passed the formal betrothal rites, Ling Buyi visited frequently like any normal fiancé.

He even brought the Black Armored Guards, claiming they were for household protection. Seeing six personal guards, another dozen men, and sentinels at the gate, Cheng Shaoshang felt extremely conflicted and couldn’t help but frown.
