After some discussion, Cheng Shi and his daughter went to Ling Buyi’s residence. Upon entering, they saw two rows of neatly arranged and stern household guards. There were no servant women or maids, making the place feel too empty and cold. Rather than a nobleman’s mansion, it resembled a military camp. However, Ling Buyi’s attitude toward Cheng Shi was even colder than his residence itself. Sensing something was off, Cheng Shaoshang exchanged a few words and then quickly excused herself.
Just as Cheng Shi and his daughter were heading out, Liang Qiuqi suddenly appeared and stopped them, using the excuse of identifying a jade pendant to bring Cheng Shaoshang back to the main hall. Cheng Shi was about to follow, but upon hearing that Liang Qiuqi wished to consult him on military matters, he hurried off, leaving Cheng Shaoshang alone to face Ling Buyi. Previously acting indifferent, Ling Buyi’s attitude changed when facing Cheng Shaoshang.
He spoke with grievance, saying that she didn’t care about him at all. As the two conversed, the Crown Prince arrived with Princess Yuchang, accompanied by Yuan Shen and Wang Jin. True to form, Wang Jin, acting as Princess Yuchang’s minion, immediately targeted Cheng Shaoshang and accused her of improper conduct. Yuan Shen stepped in to clarify, stating he merely came to thank Ling Buyi, but Princess Yuchang and Wang Jin ruined the mood.
Cheng Shaoshang rebuked Wang Jin, accusing her of being sanctimonious and inwardly malicious. To prove her innocence, she swore an oath on the spot. Ling Buyi, in order to protect Cheng Shaoshang, issued an order to expel the guests. The Crown Prince and Princess Yuchang had no choice but to leave in frustration. Meanwhile, the Third Prince, upon meeting the Crown Prince at the gate and hearing that Ling Buyi was turning away visitors, sent over some nourishing supplements.
Han Wu, the message officer of the Huo family, had been missing until today. He now reported the truth of the Battle of the Isolated City. Originally, the Marquis of Yue and King Qian’an had received the war report and were on their way to reinforce the battlefront, but were delayed three days due to poisonous miasma encountered en route. Han Wu found this very suspicious.
Years ago, the Marquis of Yue had sent a squad to investigate the miasma, and they were all killed. Later, someone saw warhorses appear back in the camp, and even the medical examiner mysteriously vanished. The authenticity of the miasma was now in doubt. Over the years, Han Wu had tried to summon his old comrades to return to the capital and present themselves to the emperor, but repeated assassination attempts forced him into hiding among commoners.
He now hoped to find a physician to uncover the truth. Due to Wang Jin spreading malicious rumors, Cheng Shaoshang became the subject of gossip. Emperor Wen was furious upon hearing of it and decided to expedite her marriage with Ling Buyi. Empress Xuan brought up the Fifth Princess’s marriage, which also caused the Emperor great headache—men and women alike were easily subjected to judgment in these times, and the Fifth Princess already had a poor reputation.
Following Empress Xuan’s advice, Emperor Wen summoned Cheng Shaoshang to the palace. That day, Cheng Shi and Xiao Yuanyi brought their daughter along. Xiao Yuanyi repeatedly reminded her not to forget to perform the formal kneeling ceremony. Cheng Shaoshang, by habit, lifted the carriage curtain to look outside and saw the grand twin towers flanking the palace gates, like ancient giants, awe-inspiring and intimidating.
As the carriage approached the gates, Emperor Wen sent word allowing the Cheng family women to ride all the way inside. Cheng Shaoshang imitated her parents in bowing to the emperor and empress. Her wit and liveliness won Emperor Wen's favor at once, and he invited the Chengs to dine in the palace. Empress Xuan sent someone to escort Cheng Shaoshang to Changqiu Hall. While the empress changed her clothes, Cheng Shaoshang excitedly examined the architecture of the hall.
Meanwhile, the Fifth Princess came to complain about her marriage, saying she looked down on the Marquis of Yue's son and longed for a free life. Even though the marriage involved the interests of the royal court, she refused to listen to reason and believed Emperor Wen favored Consort Yue, causing Empress Xuan constant distress. As soon as she finished speaking, Empress Xuan scolded the Fifth Princess sternly, forbidding her from speaking so recklessly again.
With so many lovers in her residence, Empress Xuan had turned a blind eye. But if the line were truly crossed, she would no longer tolerate it and warned her to cut ties with the young men quickly. In contrast, the Third Princess was chatting with Consort Yue, gloating over the Fifth Princess’s troubles. Consort Yue knew her nephew to be dissolute and understood why someone wouldn’t want to marry him.
As for the Third Princess, who once had feelings for Ling Buyi but was ordered to marry into the Xuan family, it was all because Ling Buyi had no interest in her. Consort Yue simply wanted a peaceful life and refused to participate in political scheming or take pleasure in others’ misfortunes. Because she had been scolded by Empress Xuan, the Fifth Princess was in a foul mood.
Upon seeing Cheng Shaoshang across the courtyard, she furiously ordered her to be flogged. Cheng Shaoshang naturally refused and remarked that the Fifth Princess was too loud, which enraged her further. Just as she was about to strike, Luo Jitong, daughter of the Changshui Guard Commander and the Fifth Princess’s companion, stepped in to defuse the situation.
