Originally, Cheng Shaogong had gone alone to the back mountain to divine Cheng Shaoshang’s marriage fate, but unexpectedly ran into the lost Young Marquis Ban, causing the omen to turn into an ominous peach blossom misfortune, which left him quite frustrated. The Young Marquis Ban treated Cheng Shaogong as a close friend, leaving Cheng Shaogong helpless, so he had no choice but to lead him out. Wang Jin and Lou Li deliberately came to make trouble for Cheng Shaoshang.
Wan Qiqi couldn’t help but argue with them, and the two ended up competing in horseback archery. After Wan Qiqi left, Yuan Shen came to Cheng Shaoshang and teased her for being so meek today, guessing that his previous recitation of The Lament of the Long Gate hadn’t worked at all. Cheng Shaoshang didn’t bother arguing and bluntly said he had become a gossip, then turned and walked away.
Seeing Yuan Shen trying to follow her, Cheng Shaoshang drew the other young ladies over, and while he was distracted, she ran straight into the woods. Meanwhile, with Cheng Shaogong’s guidance, the Young Marquis Ban finally returned to the hunting ground. Upon seeing the solitary Cheng Yang, he instantly felt a surge of affection. Meanwhile, Cheng Shaoshang rode to the mountain top and accidentally discovered a pagoda. Admiring its fine craftsmanship, she climbed up floor by floor.
Looking out the window at the mist-covered mountains and rustling pines, she suddenly realized that a broken engagement was nothing — there were still many beautiful things in the world. Just as she was about to climb further, she vaguely heard people conspiring to depose the crown prince. Frightened, she hurried back down but accidentally dropped her jade pendant.
Fortunately, Ling Buyi appeared in time, leapt up with her in his arms, grabbing the eaves with one hand and holding her tightly with the other. They hung outside the tower until those people left, then climbed back up. After such a terrifying experience, Cheng Shaoshang was still shaken and noticed that Ling Buyi had aggravated an old injury. However, Ling Buyi reminded her not to speak of this incident to anyone to avoid danger.
He then personally escorted her down the mountain. Near the hunting carriage, Ling Buyi took out the jade pendant she had dropped. Since it was missing the half with the character “female,” he kept the remaining half to ensure her safety. At the same time, Wan Qiqi’s riding and archery skills far surpassed Wang Jin’s. Within a few rounds, her superiority was clear.
Wang Jin, out of shame and anger, used a dirty trick that caused Wan Qiqi’s horse to panic and dash into the forest. Cheng Song quickly gave chase and, after several failed rescue attempts, finally rolled aside with Wan Qiqi in his arms, injuring his leg. When Wan Qiqi checked nervously, she found the injury was near his upper thigh and felt extremely embarrassed. Remembering her earlier joke about offering herself in marriage, she wished she could disappear.
At this seemingly ordinary banquet for officials, the women accompanying the Emperor included the gentle and virtuous Empress Xuan and the outspoken Consort Yue. After the feast, however, the sons of noble families and even the princes behaved like wild horses. A group of girls surrounded the men in a frenzy, gossiping nonstop, and a few secret trysts were even discovered. Emperor Wen flew into a rage.
While Empress Xuan and Consort Yue tried to calm him down, a palace eunuch suddenly reported that Ling Buyi had aggravated an old injury while saving Cheng Shaoshang. The Emperor’s mood instantly changed, and he canceled all punishments, dragging Cheng Shi straight to the tent. Ling Buyi had already predicted that Emperor Wen would want to see Cheng Shaoshang and had briefed her on how to respond. Before he finished speaking, however, the Emperor burst in.
Prompted by Ling Buyi and Cheng Shi, Cheng Shaoshang bowed to Emperor Wen. Her gesture was unlike the formal etiquette of noble girls, revealing a lack of refinement. Emperor Wen repeatedly questioned the cause of Ling Buyi’s injury. Before Cheng Shaoshang could respond, Ling Buyi answered on her behalf, clearly showing his regard for her. Emperor Wen repeatedly reminded the Cheng family to remember this kindness. Yet after meeting Cheng Shaoshang, Emperor Wen was torn.
On the one hand, he was pleased that Ling Buyi had come to understand romantic feelings. On the other, he felt that Cheng Shaoshang’s mediocre talents were unworthy of his adoptive son. In the past, Emperor Wen had admired Ling Buyi for his honesty and decisiveness, his brilliance and elegance. But sometimes he was discontent with Ling Buyi being too outstanding, so he wanted to offer him fine wine, hunting trips, or concubines — all to no avail.
Now that Ling Buyi had feelings for Cheng Shaoshang, Emperor Wen was instead troubled. He complained endlessly to Consort Yue, who eventually had enough and threw him out. Then he went to Empress Xuan, but her overly understanding nature meant she agreed with whatever conclusion he made, leaving him feeling bored.
In the end, a palace eunuch remarked that whether Cheng Shaoshang was worthy of Ling Buyi depended on the will of heaven — but then again, who said heaven was always reliable? After the hunting banquet ended, the Cheng family returned home. Cheng Shaoshang, in low spirits, had no interest in lessons. Her writing was full of mistakes.
Yuan Shen deliberately stayed behind to remind her not to use marriage to escape family constraints and accused her of deliberately getting close to Ling Buyi, which made Cheng Shaoshang furious. Cheng Shi told Xiao Yuanyi about the day’s events, indicating that the Emperor likely wanted to match Cheng Shaoshang with Ling Buyi. Xiao Yuanyi also sensed that their relationship was unusual, but knew it would be hard to get a clear answer now. Considering the Emperor’s wishes, Cheng Shi suggested that Xiao Yuanyi take Cheng Shaoshang to thank Ling Buyi — but Xiao Yuanyi thought that as head of the family, Cheng Shi should go himself.
