That night, outside the gates of Hua County, flames lit up the sky, thick black smoke staining it a bloody hue. The rebel commander Fan Chang had dragged a crowd of civilians to force Old Magistrate Cheng to open the gates. He even began killing them one by one in front of him — an act of unspeakable cruelty. Old Magistrate Cheng knew exactly what the rebels intended.

Their assault on Hua County was a ploy to ambush the Emperor during his western tour and incite rebellion. To protect the townspeople, he decided to draw the rebels away himself, sending someone to break through the siege and report the situation to Ling Buyi. The men of the Cheng family and their soldiers swore to follow him to the death and rode out of the city to confront the enemy.

Xiao Yuanyi had a nightmare of her daughter in danger and woke in a panic. Qing Cong and Cheng Yang tried to calm her and urged her to rest. After Cheng Yang left, Qing Cong noted with a smile that Xiao Yuanyi, who had once marched with the general and studied battle reports while sleeping at her desk, now fretted at home, constantly muttering Cheng Shaoshang’s name.

This was proof of a parent’s heart — wherever they are, they never stop worrying for their children. Though Xiao Yuanyi tried to hide her concern, Qing Cong saw through her. Cheng Shaoshang had once believed staying behind in the Cheng household was pitiful, but that was only because she had never truly seen hardship. Only by going out into the world could she understand the struggles of ordinary people and the harsh lives of the poor.

Old Magistrate Cheng died for his country. Fan Chang led the rebels into the city, and their cries echoed violently as they plundered, killed, and burned everything in their path. Little granddaughter Nannan remembered Old Magistrate Cheng’s words and risked her life to protect the official seal, waiting to hand it over to her Cheng uncle. But the rebels killed everyone they encountered.

Nannan narrowly escaped death when Ling Buyi appeared just in time with his Black Armor Guards and drove off the enemy. Fan Chang fled, and Ling Buyi was wounded by a hidden arrow while protecting Nannan. He ordered his men to pursue Fan Chang and prepared to report the Shu rebellion to the Emperor. Upon learning that Cheng Shaoshang and Cheng Zhi were also on the road, Ling Buyi’s expression changed, and he quickly mounted his horse to rescue them.

Meanwhile, the rebels returned once more, and Cheng Shaoshang had no choice but to confront them. She exposed their true identity as rebels in front of everyone. Enraged, the rebel leader vowed to wipe them all out, even revealing A-Miao’s tragic death, which devastated Cheng Shaoshang. The two sides were greatly mismatched. The rebels, believing that household guards posed no threat, wore bloodthirsty expressions.

Just as the leader prepared to strike Cheng Shaoshang, a tide of Black Armor soldiers surged forth, their hooves roaring like beasts. Within moments, the rebels were almost completely annihilated, with the survivors sobbing as they surrendered. With danger now gone, Cheng Shaoshang gathered herself and took on the role of hostess, personally leading the wounded indoors, boiling water, and preparing medicine to stop bleeding and bandage wounds.

Ling Buyi watched her enduring the discomfort and handed her his handkerchief to calm her nerves. Cheng Shaoshang thanked Ling Buyi and suggested she remain behind to tend to the injured to avoid delaying the march. Unexpectedly, Ling Buyi said he too needed to stay to heal. He had broken off the arrow shaft himself, leaving the arrowhead barely exposed under the skin and with no leverage for removal.

The injury had also been left untreated for too long, and the physician was at a loss. At that moment, Cheng Shaoshang had an idea. She took out the Shaoshang string Wan Qiqi had given her, carefully embedding its necklace into the wound to hook the rusted arrowhead and slowly pulled it out. Ling Buyi gritted his teeth in silence the entire time and later gently reassured her not to blame herself.

Ling Buyi recognized the lost weaponry from the broken arrow, then handled the remaining rebels himself. Though he had promised to spare them, he saw how much Cheng Shaoshang wanted to avenge A-Miao and personally executed them. Cheng Shaoshang watched from the grass, her feelings complicated and confused. Ling Buyi turned upon hearing her movement and sighed deeply. Just as they had arrived, they left in orderly fashion.

Ling Buyi led the Black Armor Guards down the mountain, but couldn’t help looking back at Cheng Shaoshang in silent farewell. She stood at the front of the group, watching the flames consume the bodies of the household servants, silently mourning the innocent dead. Once everything was settled, Cheng Zhi finally arrived. Before Cheng Shaoshang could say anything, he stumbled into the carriage to find his beloved wife, sobbing and accusing Lou Yao of delaying the journey by fainting repeatedly.

Cheng Shaoshang asked Lou Yao what had happened and learned that Cheng Zhi had mistakenly believed Sang Shunhua had died, which caused his repeated fainting spells in anguish. After hearing this petty tale, Cheng Shaoshang became increasingly frustrated. She and her third aunt had endured life-and-death danger, while her third uncle and Lou Yao had merely wandered around the hills without any real threat. Truly, the same people live vastly different lives.

After this reflection, the convoy resumed its journey toward Hua County. As their wheels rolled through bloodstained ground and the city gates slowly opened, they were met with a horrifying scene — countless dead and wounded, widespread devastation, burning homes, and displaced civilians — all of it left everyone stunned.
