The group had only just set off when the sound of galloping hooves approached from outside. A family guard came over to report that Lou Yao was requesting an audience with Cheng Shaoshang. As Cheng Zhi donned his coat and stepped down from the carriage, Lou Yao dismounted immediately and bowed respectfully.
After a few polite exchanges, he got straight to the point, saying he had yet to thank Cheng Shaoshang for saving him at the lantern festival and the Wan residence, and had decided to escort the convoy as protection. Cheng Shaoshang’s voice came from inside the carriage, and as Lou Yao walked to the front of the vehicle, he summoned the courage to confess his admiration for her.
However, Cheng Shaoshang had no interest in talking further and decisively rejected his declaration of affection. The convoy continued eastward, passing through scenic landscapes that Cheng Shaoshang could not appreciate, as Lou Yao kept a steady but distant pace behind them. Cheng Zhi, feeling somewhat sympathetic, had food sent to Lou Yao. Cheng Shaoshang did not object, which gave him hope.
Because Cheng Zhi was especially doting toward Sang Shunhua, Lou Yao tried to follow his example by caring for Cheng Shaoshang. However, this troubled her, and she earnestly begged her third uncle to persuade him to leave. Lou Yao knew that for Cheng Zhi to marry the daughter of the White Deer Mountain Lord, he must possess some remarkable qualities, so he specifically sought his advice, hoping for some guidance.
Meanwhile, Cheng Shaoshang and Sang Shunhua spoke of Yuan Shen, revealing a little-known part of the past. If it hadn’t been for Huangfu Yi’s heartless betrayal, Sang Shunhua might never have noticed Cheng Zhi. Now, even though Huangfu Yi still held feelings for Sang Shunhua, Yuan Shen believed both parties had found new paths and should let go. While Cheng Zhi was advising Lou Yao, a melodious singing voice suddenly drifted over.
Cheng Shaoshang and the others followed the sound and found the martial maid A-Miao singing beneath a tree. Perhaps moved by the scene, Cheng Shaoshang began to yearn for a carefree life of singing and playing the flute in the mountains. Though Lou Yao appeared unmoved, he had already taken it to heart. Two days later, the convoy finally entered Yanzhou. However, before reaching Hua County, Cheng Zhi insisted on taking a detour to visit an old acquaintance.
But when they saw the city gates from afar, his expression changed drastically. In previous years, the area outside Qing County’s gates would be bustling with trading caravans, farmers selling their harvests, hunters offering pelts, and travelers seeking family or directions. But now the gates were shut tight, not a single civilian in sight, not even a guard — something was clearly wrong.
Fearing something had happened to his friend, Cheng Zhi took his guards to investigate, leaving the others behind to protect the women. Not long after his departure, dozens of bandits ambushed the convoy. The surrounding area was dense with woods and ravines, and the air filled with the roar of combat. Ahead were martial maids, while close-quarters fighting broke out on both flanks.
A supply carriage had toppled over, and Sang Shunhua suffered a minor injury, making her unfit for long-distance travel. Cheng Shaoshang ordered the luggage in a comfort carriage to be unloaded to lighten the load, allowing them to press forward. Using her memory of the terrain map, she led the group to an abandoned hunting lodge and used its tools to fortify their defenses. As Cheng Shaoshang had predicted, the bandits soon returned in force.
The martial maids immediately pulled out tripwires and launched a dense volley of arrows. But the leader managed to seize A-Miao and ride off. Cheng Shaoshang was devastated and could only watch as she was taken away. That night, she was overcome with guilt and regret, truly realizing how close she had come to death — and how easily those around her could die. Sang Shunhua comforted Cheng Shaoshang, saying she had nothing to be ashamed of.
Even if Cheng Zhi had been present, he might not have managed everything so well. In chaotic times, human lives are like grass. Protecting one person is self-preservation, protecting a hundred is for one’s neighbors, and protecting ten thousand is for the world. It was because Cheng Shi and Xiao Yuanyi carried such a sense of duty that they had once abandoned Cheng Shaoshang without hesitation to rescue a besieged city and bring peace to a war-torn world.
A martial maid suddenly reported that the bandit corpses had been removed. Cheng Shaoshang recalled how orderly the enemy had been in both attack and retreat, unlike ordinary bandits. They had also ignored all the valuables, which reminded her of the arms case Ling Buyi had once mentioned. She suspected these men were in fact rebels from Shu. Back then, the arms related to Uncle Dong’s case were sent to Shu, likely because the region had developed treacherous intentions.
With the Emperor about to tour the west, they must have planned an assassination. Cheng Shaoshang’s group had inadvertently encountered their advance scouts, so to prevent exposure, the rebels were trying to eliminate all witnesses. Though there was no certainty of stopping them, the top priority was to stall for time until reinforcements arrived.
