Rumors circulated among the servants that the Hanshui Sect's recent decline made a marriage between Taoyun and An Jingzhao a favorable arrangement for their stability. Since Taoyun was the true Han Wanqing, the union would bring the prestige of Yunwei Villa to the Hanshui Sect. Chuyue overheard these discussions and rushed to find An Jingzhao.
Donghua, An Jingzhao's subordinate, later confirmed to him that he had instructed staff not to tell Chuyue, as An Jingzhao feared her anger and wanted to resolve the matter himself. Donghua also reported that Jingling, An Jingzhao's younger brother, had given Chuyue a handmade hairpin, commenting on his manipulatively coy behavior. Chuyue confronted An Jingzhao, who confirmed that Taoyun was indeed Han Wanqing.
When she asked if he was going to marry Taoyun, An Jingzhao vehemently denied it, but Chuyue pointed out the servants were already talking about it. As she turned to leave, An Jingzhao embraced her, declaring she was the only one he loved and intended to marry. He reassured her that he had not agreed to the marriage, attributing the rumors to gossip within the large villa, and asked her to trust him to resolve the matter with his father.
Later, An Jingzhao and Chuyue were summoned to a family banquet by An Chenghu, An Jingzhao's father. An Jingzhao's attempt to decline was overruled. At the banquet, An Chenghu introduced Taoyun as the "true Young Madam" of Yunwei Villa, asserting that their marriage was the best outcome in the turbulent martial arts world. An Jingzhao voiced his dissent to his father and urged Chuyue to leave, promising to handle the situation.
As Chuyue departed, she told a concerned Taoyun that she was going to find embroidery. An Jingzhao followed Chuyue, concerned about the dangers of her traveling alone as his wife. Chuyue retorted that she was his "ex" at most, but An Jingzhao insisted she would always be his wife. They arrived at the valley where Chief Han, Taoyun’s brother, had disappeared two days prior. Ye Kong, Chief Han's disciple, explained that none of them could descend the perilous cliff.
An Jingzhao resolved to investigate, and after Chuyue insisted on helping her friend, he allowed her to accompany him. Inside the dark, booby-trapped area, An Jingzhao confessed the proposed marriage was his father's idea and that he didn't need a "helpful wife," only her, his life's sole love and source of courage. They found Chief Han, alive but stripped of his martial arts skills.
He recounted being attacked by a masked man who used the "Art of Starshift," a long-lost technique, to absorb his power. Back at the cliff top, An Jingzhao noticed a strange scent on Chief Han. After an incense burner yielded no clues, Chuyue discovered a hidden pouch of "Dissolving Bone Powder" in the lining of his garment, revealing a mole within the Hanshui Sect. She also spotted fresh red "raw lacquer" on the sleeve, a new clue.
Chief Han ordered an investigation into places that sold the poison and also dealt in lacquerware. An Jingzhao then asked Chief Han to cancel the marriage, explaining that neither he nor Taoyun wished for it. Chief Han agreed. Later, An Jingzhao reiterated his refusal to Taoyun, who admitted she only considered it to protect her sect. An Jingzhao promised to treat her as a sister and offer Yunwei Villa's full support.
Jingling offered to help An Jingzhao practice martial arts by reciting the formulas, to which An Jingzhao agreed, telling his brother he could have anything except his beloved. During the practice, Jingling deliberately recited an incorrect move. An Jingzhao then instructed his subordinate, A Qing, to lure Taoyun to his location, claiming Chuyue wanted to meet her there. Shortly after, An Jingzhao felt dizzy and collapsed, embracing the arriving Taoyun while mistaking her for Chuyue.
Chuyue witnessed the scene, and despite An Jingzhao’s attempts to explain his sudden confusion, she left heartbroken. Chuyue traveled north to find the embroidery master Ju Wutang. Lacking funds, she worked at a teahouse to earn money for information and learned Ju Wutang frequented a music house to see a musician named Yuege. Meanwhile, An Jingzhao recovered and, upon reviewing his martial arts manual, realized Jingling had recited the wrong formula, connecting it to his collapse. Learning of Chuyue's whereabouts, he set off for the music house.
