Li Jianjian and Ling Xiao are mistaken for dating by the Academic Director while holding hands, prompting them to flee. Later, Ling Xiao's birth mother, Chen Ting, returns after ten years. She first meets Ling Xiao, then Ling Heping. Their meeting is awkward, with polite initial conversation. Ling Heping provides Chen Ting with her daughter's school transfer documents, then tries to leave, but Chen Ting reveals she met Ling Xiao.

Ling Heping becomes furious, demanding to know why she suddenly appeared after a decade, questioning her consideration for Ling Xiao's feelings. Chen Ting retorts, accusing Ling Heping of failing his fatherly duties by abandoning Ling Xiao to neighbors, and suggesting Li Haichao, raising three children alone, cannot educate them well. Ling Heping counters that Li Haichao is Ling Xiao's true father and instructs Chen Ting to stop bothering Ling Xiao.

Ling Heping later asks Li Haichao to speak with Ling Xiao about Chen Ting, as Ling Xiao confides in Li Haichao. Li Haichao agrees, worried about Ling Xiao. While Ling Xiao deals with his birth mother, He Ziqiu constantly thinks of his own mother, He Mei. He recalls their last meeting seven or eight years ago, when she promised to return after going to Shenzhen but never did. Playing basketball with his friend Zhuang Bei, He Ziqiu is distracted.

He rejects Zhuang Bei's suggestion that Ling Xiao should be kinder to Qin Meiyang and Chen Ting, asserting their family consists of only five people, with others being outsiders. Zhuang Bei then questions why He Ziqiu still searches for He Mei. He Ziqiu explains he seeks answers for her abandonment and intends to retrieve Li Haichao's money. He Ziqiu mistakes a woman in a long dress for He Mei, follows her, but realizes his error when she turns around.

He then denies the mistake to Zhuang Bei and a classmate, claiming he thought she was an acquaintance or another sister. Soon after, Ling Xiao, Li Jianjian, and He Ziqiu return to Li Haichao's noodle shop after school. They find Ling Xiao's maternal grandmother there with Qin Meiyang (also referred to as Chengzi), Ling Xiao's half-sister. Qin Meiyang, enthusiastic, introduces herself and offers a gift, but Ling Xiao, having no good feelings for her, refuses it.

The grandmother takes Ling Xiao outside, scolding him for treating Li Haichao as his real father and claiming Ling Heping's good relationship with Li Haichao (who had lent him money) is merely a transactional one. Ling Xiao, realizing her intent to slander Li Haichao, becomes enraged and tells his grandmother to stop visiting and bothering Ling Heping. In her anger, she hits Ling Xiao's wrist. Li Jianjian, witnessing this from inside, rushes out to protect Ling Xiao.

The grandmother leaves Qin Meiyang with Ling Xiao, criticizing Li Jianjian's upbringing. Inside the noodle shop, Qin Meiyang asks Li Jianjian why she calls Ling Xiao 'brother', asserting that Ling Xiao only has her as a sister. Li Jianjian and He Ziqiu both refute her, with Li Jianjian leaning on Ling Xiao's shoulder to emphasize she is his sister. Li Haichao intervenes, scolding the three for bullying a child.

Ling Heping returns and takes Qin Meiyang home, preventing her from following Ling Xiao. Chen Ting expresses dissatisfaction with her mother's aggressive tactics. However, the grandmother explains her actions are deliberate, aimed at making Ling Xiao accustomed to Qin Meiyang's presence since Chen Ting's decade-long absence prevents Ling Xiao from approaching her willingly. She also admits to frequently using Ling Heping for errands to maintain a connection with Ling Xiao.

Ling Xiao's grandmother continues to bring Qin Meiyang to see him, publicly spreading news about Chen Ting's life, leaving Ling Heping powerless. Ling Xiao feels complicated hearing neighbors discussing Chen Ting's affairs, while Chen Ting's mother, a miser, boasts to neighbors about Chen Ting's wealthy marriage to a Singaporean businessman, driving luxury cars. Ling Xiao has a nightmare about the day his younger sister died during a thunderstorm, when his desperate cries went unheard.

Later, Chen Ting brings Qin Meiyang to Li Haichao's noodle shop. As Ling Xiao helps Qin Meiyang with her homework, he discovers an identical birthmark on Qin Meiyang's neck to that of his deceased younger sister. Chen Ting, observing Ling Xiao's reaction, tearfully recounts the past, revealing her recurring nightmares about thunderstorms. She explains her fear of divine retribution. Ling Xiao, though touched by her words, dismisses it as superstition.

She also explains that during the heavy thunderstorm when his sister died, Ling Xiao's desperate cries for help and attempts to open the door went unheard due to the overwhelming thunder. Chen Ting is happy to see Ling Xiao and Qin Meiyang getting closer. That evening, Ling Xiao, Li Jianjian, and He Ziqiu gather on the rooftop, eating supper while waiting for a meteor shower. After supper, with no meteors in sight, Li Jianjian falls asleep.

He Ziqiu asks Ling Xiao if he ever wondered why Chen Ting left. Ling Xiao replies that he knows she abandoned the past, not him, and feels "noisy" but happy for her current good life. He Ziqiu, feeling they are unimportant to their parents, questions if He Mei would ever return. Ling Xiao advises him not to overthink, suggesting He Mei would return if she wanted him. However, He Ziqiu dislikes being treated so casually. Suddenly, meteors appear.

Ling Xiao and He Ziqiu quickly wake Li Jianjian. Overjoyed, Li Jianjian looks at the meteors, calling out to her mother in the sky, hoping her mother can see her, which makes both Ling Xiao and He Ziqiu feel tender for her. Elsewhere, He Ziqiu encounters Qi Mingyue after basketball. Jin Yuxiang asks Qi Mingyue about her interactions with Li Jianjian, advising her to focus solely on her studies.

Qi Mingyue, as class monitor, explains she needs to be aware of classmates' situations and shares that Ling Xiao is ranked first in the grade, and He Ziqiu is among the top ten in their class, impressing Jin Yuxiang.
