Chen Changsheng bid farewell to his master and senior brother. His master assured him of his eventual return and handed him a marriage contract, revealing it was with "Little Rong'er," a girl Chen Changsheng had saved when they were children. Her grandfather, grateful for the rescue, had arranged the union. However, Chen Changsheng, facing the grim reality that he might not live past twenty, felt he should not burden her and decided he must annul the marriage.
His master agreed to respect his wishes but advised him to seek help from the prominent Xu family in the Divine Capital if he encountered trouble. His senior brother also wished him well, reminding him of his name's meaning. Meanwhile, Xu Yourong was recovering from the Peacock Feather poison inflicted by Nan Ke. Qiu Shanjun visited her, bringing a thousand-year lotus seed from Wugou Lake, known for its detoxifying properties, to aid her healing.
He expressed his concern for her well-being, disregarding the danger he faced in retrieving the rare ingredient. Mo Yu, an Imperial Lady Official, also visited Xu Yourong, learning of her injury by Nan Ke and advising her to rest while Mo Yu reported to the Empress. Nan Ke, the demon princess, later spoke with her master, a black-robed figure. She admitted her feelings for Qiu Shanjun, but the black-robed figure urged her to abandon such thoughts, acknowledging their opposing factions.
The black-robed figure, concerned about Xu Yourong's ability to deduce the location of the Zhou Garden key, planned to deploy the Sacred Smoke Net, a demonic artifact, to bypass Bai Luoheng's Thousand-Mile Talisman and capture her, as Bai Luoheng's demon guardian Jin Yulü made a direct attack difficult. In the Divine Capital, Empress was informed that the six academies of Qingteng were preparing for the Grand Examination enrollment.
She approved the enrollment, emphasizing the need to prevent demonic infiltration and ensure the city's security. She also tasked Mo Yu with assisting Prince Chenliu in organizing the Green Vine Banquet. A minister's suggestion to reopen the National Academy was promptly dismissed by the Empress, who still held a grudge against the institution from years past. Later, while discussing the upcoming Grand Examination with Mo Yu, the Empress reflected on the various talented youths.
Mo Yu expressed confidence in Tianhai Ya'er of Heavenly Dao Academy, though the Empress dismissed him as frivolous compared to the likes of Xu Yourong and Qiu Shanjun. The Empress also inquired about Xu Yourong’s injuries and wished to see her once she recovered. Back in the Divine Capital, Bai Luoheng, the lively demon princess, evaded her guardian, Jin Yulü, who insisted she attend the Heavenly Dao Academy.
Bai Luoheng, whose meridian problems had eluded all healers, found no motivation to attend. She expressed interest in visiting the abandoned National Academy, but Jin Yulü warned her against it, explaining the Pope's protective sword array and the diplomatic implications for the alliance between humans and demons. Bai Luoheng eventually bargained to study human cultivation techniques if she complied, and Jin Yulü reluctantly agreed.
Chen Changsheng, captivated by the city's bustle, found himself in a restaurant where he inadvertently commented that the "Golden-Winged Roc" dish was merely pheasant. Bai Luoheng, overhearing him, confirmed that such exotic dishes in the capital were typically substitutes for ordinary meats. Recognizing Jin Yulü nearby, Bai Luoheng, who called herself Luoluo, pulled Chen Changsheng away, evading her guardian. She then sensed an ambush ahead. Chen Changsheng also detected a strong presence.
Believing it was her own people trying to capture her, Bai Luoheng quickly activated a Thousand-Mile Talisman to instantly transport herself and Chen Changsheng to an inn. At the inn, Bai Luoheng, liking Chen Changsheng, insisted he take the best room, despite his preference for a modest one. After settling him in, she departed, with Jin Yulü and other guards ensuring her safety, remarking on the dangers of her wandering around the Divine Capital unprotected.
Chen Changsheng, alone in his room, felt a familiar chest pain and checked the shifting star pattern on his arm, a sign of his deteriorating condition. Chen Changsheng then proceeded to the Xu family manor. A guard initially dismissed him, but upon hearing his urgent request regarding an important matter, informed Madam Xu.
Madam Xu, having learned that Chen Changsheng had not undergone Marrow Cleansing, expressed disdain for his humble origins and wondered why Xu Yourong's late grandfather, Xu Taizai, had arranged such a match. She agreed to see him, receiving him in a formal setting. Madam Xu immediately stated her refusal of the marriage. She explained that Xu Yourong's grandfather had only agreed out of obligation after Chen Changsheng's master saved Xu Yourong.
She dismissed the idea of a genuine connection between them as mere "story-book fantasy" believed only by "country bumpkins," and offered Chen Changsheng financial compensation to break the engagement, implying he was only seeking wealth. Chen Changsheng, initially intent on annulling the marriage himself, was provoked by her insults toward his master.
He countered her condescending remarks by observing the expensive tea on her table and her inability to drink it, suggesting she, too, was not "destined" for everything she possessed. He then strongly insulted her, calling her mere "rubble" rather than "porcelain," suggesting she, too, lacked the inherent destiny for her possessions. He declared that he would not return the marriage contract unless she apologized to his master. With that, he left.
Outside the manor, Xu Yourong's personal maid, Shuang'er, intercepted Chen Changsheng. She initially called him "little Taoist," prompting Chen Changsheng to clarify that he was not a Taoist. She asked if the marriage contract was real, and he affirmed its existence. She then warned him that mentioning the contract publicly would endanger his life, citing Qiu Shanjun's deep affection for Xu Yourong and the potential wrath of the Lishan Sword Sect and the Qiu Shan family.
Chen Changsheng reiterated that he had initially intended to annul the marriage but changed his mind because no one, including Madam Xu or Shuang'er, had even bothered to ask his name. He introduced himself as Chen Changsheng, emphasizing his pride in his name. Meanwhile, Xu Weixin, Xu Yourong's father, who had overheard the conversation, resolved to discreetly obstruct Chen Changsheng's attempts to enter the academies, hoping to force him out of the Divine Capital and break the engagement.
Chen Changsheng arrived at the Heavenly Dao Academy for enrollment, where he observed many hopeful students and marveled at the city's prosperity. He met Tang Sanshiliu, the flamboyant young master of the Tang family from Wenshui, who arrived dramatically using his self-designed Soaring Wings. Tang Sanshiliu, noticing Chen Changsheng's indifference to the money he threw, engaged him in conversation.
Chen Changsheng then impressed Tang Sanshiliu by pointing out several design flaws in his Soaring Wings, offering suggestions for improvement, such as adding a wind-based array, using lift-generating wings, and modifying the feather design. Tang Sanshiliu, amazed by Chen Changsheng's insight, introduced himself and asked Chen Changsheng's name. The academy gates opened for enrollment. Tang Sanshiliu expressed concern upon learning Chen Changsheng had never cultivated.
During the assessment, Chen Changsheng placed his hand on the Sensing Stone, but it remained unresponsive, confirming he had no cultivation. The examiner moved to dismiss him, but Chen Changsheng invoked the academy rules, demanding a written examination to gain entry. He excelled in the written test due to his extensive knowledge. However, when the results were posted, Chen Changsheng's name was conspicuously absent. Though Chen Changsheng remained composed, Tang Sanshiliu was indignant at the injustice. Unbeknownst to them, Xu Weixin was behind this, intending to make Chen Changsheng abandon his quest and leave the Divine Capital.
