The Divine Capital was engulfed in outrage following a series of assassinations targeting elite youths on the Azure Cloud Rankings. This fury was swiftly directed at Chen Changsheng, especially after Huo Guang, a student who had recently attempted to challenge Chen Changsheng, was found dead outside the Orthodox Academy. Students from various academies, led by Zhuang Huanyu, gathered daily, accusing Chen Changsheng of murder.
Even when Tang Sanshiliu appeared, Zhuang Huanyu quickly turned his accusations towards him, implicating him as an accomplice. Amidst this escalating tension, Mo Yu arrived with the Holy Empress's decree, dispersing the agitated students and bringing a temporary calm to the academy's surroundings. The Pope, overseeing the initial investigation, revealed that the murder weapon, though meticulously crafted, did not belong to any specific sect, but its unique forging style was characteristic of the Tang family of Wenshui.
To help clear his family's name, Mo Yu entrusted the weapon to Tang Sanshiliu. This revelation also provided an opportunity for Tianhai Ya'er, who harbored resentment towards the Tang family for encroaching on the Tianhai family's business in the capital. He seized the chance, orchestrating attacks on Tang family shops and spreading false rumors that the monsters had attacked the Tang family head to silence witnesses.
Back in Wenshui, Tang Sanshiliu's father was severely injured in these attacks, fueling Tang Sanshiliu's determination to clear his family's name. Despite his father's wish for him to return to the Heavenly Dao Academy and distance himself from Chen Changsheng, Tang Sanshiliu began his own investigation into the source of the weapons. He discovered suspicious entries in the family ledgers: large quantities of non-defective weapons were being routinely destroyed, with no record of their materials.
The family accountant feigned ignorance when questioned. Unbeknownst to Tang Sanshiliu, his adopted younger brother, Tang Hai, had been secretly trading these weapons with monsters, an operation he conducted with their father's clandestine approval. Tang Hai, resentful of his more talented elder brother, ruthlessly murdered the accountant when he realized Tang Sanshiliu was close to uncovering the truth.
Left with no further leads from the ledgers, Tang Sanshiliu approached Mo Yu, convincing her to help him expose the traitor within his family. Meanwhile, Mo Yu had provided Xu Yourong with the complete case files for the serial assassinations. Xu Yourong, determined to prove Chen Changsheng's innocence, noticed a recurring detail: witnesses in all cases mentioned hearing a night watchman's gong. This led her to believe a night watchman might be a key eyewitness.
She located a watchman named Kang Wei, who revealed that a colleague, Li Shan, had covered his shift on the night Huo Guang died and had been seen asking for directions to the Ministry of Justice. However, before Xu Yourong could find Li Shan, Tianhai Ya'er had already captured him. Tianhai Ya'er, intent on Chen Changsheng's demise, refused to allow any testimony that could exonerate him and ordered Li Shan's immediate detention.
Xu Yourong's senior brother, Qiushan Jun, also visited her, offering support but cautioning her to investigate discreetly to avoid the Holy Empress's scrutiny. While Chen Changsheng languished in prison, the black-robed figure of the monsters, having failed to find the Garden Key at the Orthodox Academy due to Chen Changsheng's defensive arrays, devised a new, more insidious plan.
They dispatched monster forces to raid the prison, hoping to either force Chen Changsheng to reveal the key's location or, failing that, solidify the Holy Empress's belief that he was colluding with monsters, thus securing his execution. Chen Changsheng endured torture at the hands of Zhou Tong, head of the Qingsi Court. Zhou Tong, known for his brutal methods, subjected Chen Changsheng to the Soul-Refining Whip, a device designed to inflict maximum pain by targeting one's divine consciousness.
Chen Changsheng, despite his weakening state, steadfastly maintained his innocence, refusing to confess. After merely four lashes, he passed out. Tianhai Ya'er, now overseeing the case, instructed Zhou Tong to prolong Chen Changsheng's suffering rather than kill him quickly, savoring his torment. Both Xu Yourong and Luoluo visited Chen Changsheng in prison.
He downplayed his condition to Xu Yourong, expressing concern for Tang Sanshiliu and noting that the assassinations had ceased since his arrest, a fact that ironically deepened suspicions against him. Xu Yourong reassured him of her unwavering belief and resolve to find the truth. Luoluo, who had used a Thousand-Mile Button to sneak into the prison despite being advised by Uncle Jin against interfering in human affairs, also found her master weak but still caring.
She promised to join Xu Yourong in finding the real culprit. During the monster raid on the prison, Tianhai Ya'er saw an opportunity to immediately execute Chen Changsheng. Nan Ke, another monster, intended to abduct Chen Changsheng during the chaos. However, she found Luoluo staunchly guarding him. Nan Ke offered to rescue Chen Changsheng with her Broken Blade, a demonic treasure, but Luoluo refused.
Having recently tried to rescue Chen Changsheng herself, Luoluo knew he had insisted on enduring the torture to prove his innocence. Accepting Nan Ke's help would irrevocably brand him as a monster collaborator. Tianhai Ya'er, seizing the moment, falsely reported Chen Changsheng's collusion with monsters during the jailbreak, prompting the Holy Empress to immediately order his execution. Elated by the impending demise of his perceived enemy, Tianhai Ya'er's joy was uncontainable.
His triumph was briefly interrupted when he learned that Xu Yourong had discovered Li Shan, the night watchman, hidden in the Tianhai family's dungeon. Without hesitation, Tianhai Ya'er murdered Li Shan to eliminate any remaining witnesses. The next day, as Chen Changsheng was led to the execution platform to face the Divine Judgment, Tianhai Ya'er's excitement was unconcealed. Unknown to the Holy Empress, the Star Array she so vigilantly protected was becoming dangerously unstable.
This instability was a direct consequence of Chen Changsheng's suffering and the turmoil affecting his fate star, which in turn impacted the Great Array itself. The profound implications of her decision remained unseen.
