The Central Continent was a land where Humans, demons, and monsters coexisted. The Humans and demons, righteous and kind, maintained an alliance for generations, while the evil monsters sought to unify all three races under their control. In the early years of Taiyuan, monsters launched an invasion. Taizong, leading the Human forces, allied with the demons. After decades of arduous warfare, their combined armies successfully repelled the monster invasion.
However, shortly after peace was restored, Taizong unexpectedly passed away, prompting the monsters to seize the opportunity and invade once more. In this desperate time, humanity's only reliance was the Holy Empress, Tianhai, who declared, "Why panic? I'm still here." The war that followed was devastating, shaking the heavens and the earth. As the monsters relentlessly pressed forward, Tianhai activated the Star Array, a powerful formation created by Zhou Dufu.
However, without Taizong's bloodline for sacrifice, the array could only operate at a fraction of its power. During this critical moment, the black-robed figure, a monster military advisor, appeared, intending to destroy the weakened array. Tianhai fiercely engaged the black-robed figure, refusing to allow the array's destruction. With the assistance of a Frost Dragon, the black-robed figure inflicted heavy casualties upon the Great Zhou army.
Faced with overwhelming odds, Tianhai made a terrible sacrifice: she used her own son's blood to forcefully activate the Star Array, unleashing its full power and finally turning the tide of the war. After the immediate crisis subsided, court officials, citing the Crown Prince's disappearance, urged Tianhai to appoint Prince Xiang as the new Emperor. Tianhai, however, rejected this proposal.
With the support of Yin Xingdao, the Pope of Great Zhou, she ascended the throne as the female empress, Tianhai Youxue. She also ordered the arrest of Shang Xingzhou, the head of the National Academy, believing him to be the traitor who allowed the black-robed figure to penetrate the Divine Capital. Amidst these tumultuous events, her young son vanished without a trace, a loss Tianhai vowed to rectify, saying, "My child is still missing. I will find you."
This was a distant chapter in the history of the Central Continent, a history that a young boy named Chen Changsheng would later learn. Chen Changsheng lived in a serene, secluded valley with his master, Ji Dao Ren, and his senior brother, Yuren. Though physically frail from a young age, Changsheng possessed a kind heart.
Ji Dao Ren was exceptionally protective of him because Changsheng's blood contained the power of the stars, a unique property that could strengthen the body, enhance cultivation, and even save lives, making him a living treasure to others. Ji Dao Ren constantly warned Changsheng, "Your blood is different from others. It contains the power of the stars. . . if you bleed, your meridians will lose balance. This will shorten your lifespan.
So, this secret must never be revealed," fearing that this secret would bring calamity upon his innocent disciple. Changsheng, however, asked, "If my blood can save people, shouldn't I help them?" Yuren, equally protective, promised, "I will protect my brother." One day, as Chen Changsheng and Yuren were gathering herbs, they heard sounds of a struggle nearby. They discovered Xu Taizai, leading his granddaughter Xu Yourong, being pursued.
Ji Dao Ren arrived just in time, setting up a Micro-Mystic Array to repel their pursuers, and brought the pair to their humble abode. Xu Taizai revealed that Xu Yourong carried the Heavenly Phoenix bloodline, which had awakened prematurely, overwhelming her small body. He desperately pleaded with Ji Dao Ren to save her, offering all his family's wealth.
Though Ji Dao Ren was initially hesitant, claiming Xu Yourong's condition was beyond his medical capabilities and merely a matter of fate, Changsheng, recalling his master's earlier words about his blood's healing properties, stealthily offered his blood to Xu Yourong. Miraculously, her fever subsided, and her pulse returned to normal. Ji Dao Ren, feigning a sudden cure, celebrated the recovery. Later, when confronted by his master about his reckless act, Changsheng simply stated, "I have Master and my senior brother.
You will definitely save me," adding defiantly, "I'll just fight against fate. If I win, it'll be fine." Chen Changsheng and Xu Yourong spent happy days together in the valley, playing and exploring its wonders, with Chen Changsheng even playing his xun (an ancient wind instrument) with Xu Yourong. They marveled at unique plants like the Echo Grass and the Rainbow Fairy. Xu Yourong even observed that Changsheng's hands could sometimes accidentally emit fire.
Soon, Xu Taizai's injuries healed, and he prepared to depart with Xu Yourong. Before leaving, Xu Yourong gave Chen Changsheng a Wind-Seeking Crane and a bamboo dragonfly, explaining, "No matter how far, it will deliver your letters to me," and made him promise not to forget her if he ever left the mountain. Chen Changsheng, in turn, gave her a small bottle of medicine for future illnesses and swore he would never forget her. They parted ways with heavy hearts.
After descending the mountain, Xu Yourong's grandfather sent her to Saintess Peak to cultivate her Heavenly Phoenix bloodline. Though revered by everyone there, she felt a profound loneliness, missing the simple companionship she found with Chen Changsheng. Through the Wind-Seeking Crane, they exchanged letters. Changsheng wrote of his longing and his desire to see the world, hoping to go fishing with her again without burning the fish.
Yourong's letters conveyed her solitude despite the respect she received, urging him to find her if he ever came down the mountain. As years passed, Changsheng grew into a handsome young man, but occasionally wondered if Xu Yourong had already forgotten him. Despite the serene environment, Chen Changsheng's health continued to decline. He frequently fainted.
After one such incident, Ji Dao Ren revealed the grim truth: the star power attacking his heart was progressing rapidly, and given his inability to cultivate, he would not live past twenty, probably having only a year left. Ji Dao Ren lamented that it was "fate" and could not be changed easily. Changsheng refused to accept this, questioning if fate could truly not be defied. Ji Dao Ren explained two paths to "defy fate."
One was to cultivate to the Divine Hidden Realm, a near-mythical state attained only by a few legendary figures in history, which was impossible for someone like Changsheng who couldn't even begin cultivation. The second path was to find Zhou Dufu's legendary notebook in Lingxu Pavilion, which might hold the secrets to defying fate. However, accessing the Lingxu Pavilion required winning the Grand Court Examination, a grueling competition held every three years against hundreds of elite scholars.
Ji Dao Ren offered an alternative: staying on the mountain, where he could extend Changsheng's life by another three years. After observing a cicada that endured seven years underground only to live for seven days, embodying unwavering determination, Changsheng made his decision. He declared to Yuren, "I've decided. I will leave the mountain." Ji Dao Ren, though saddened, tested Chen Changsheng's resolve. He challenged Changsheng to climb a treacherous cliff within three days to retrieve a hidden sword.
The cliff was magically enchanted to simulate all the dangers of the outside world, including changing seasons, storms, and mythical beasts. Yuren, secretly worried, managed to record Ji Dao Ren's mantra for the Micro-Mystic Array, a comprehensive guide to all arrays in the world, and passed it to Changsheng. With remarkable insight, Chen Changsheng meditated on the mantra, proclaiming, "I understand now. The way of heaven is the way of man, and the way of man is my own way.
All things in the world are relative. Death comes before rebirth." He successfully broke through the array and retrieved the sword, proving his determination. Ji Dao Ren, though initially feigning the challenge wasn't real, ultimately conceded with a mixture of pride and reluctance. Before Changsheng departed, Ji Dao Ren gave him the Wugou Sword, its scabbard called Hidden Edge which could store many items, including ten precious Blood-Concealing Pills to mask his star power if he bled.
Finally, he handed Changsheng a marriage contract and an accompanying token, instructing him to seek help from Xu Taizai if he ever faced difficulties in the Divine Capital. Unbeknownst to Chen Changsheng, his entry into the world was already causing ripples; the Holy Empress observed astrological shifts, hinting at the appearance of a potent rival. Changsheng, bewildered by the mention of a "marriage contract," could only question his master before embarking on his journey.
On his journey down the mountain, Chen Changsheng encountered a white-clad woman with a dignified yet cold demeanor, who appeared to be suffering from poison. Without hesitation, he offered her an antidote. Seeing her wary gaze, he first consumed a pill himself to demonstrate its safety, after which she accepted. What Chen Changsheng didn't realize was that this woman was Xu Yourong.
Their brief interaction was interrupted by the arrival of three more women, led by Nan Ke, the captivating and arrogant princess of the demon tribe. Nan Ke, who held an affection for Qiu Shanjun, aggressively confronted Chen Changsheng. As Nan Ke attacked, Xu Yourong stepped in to protect Changsheng, engaging her in a skirmish. Seizing the opportunity, Chen Changsheng swiftly deployed an array to momentarily trap Nan Ke, allowing him and Xu Yourong to escape.
They parted ways hurriedly, neither having had the chance to exchange names, thus missing an opportunity for recognition. Nan Ke, determined to pursue Xu Yourong, was then intercepted by Qiu Shanjun, the esteemed senior disciple of the Lishan Sect. Nan Ke, not wishing to antagonize Qiu Shanjun, reluctantly abandoned her chase. Qiu Shanjun then recovered Xu Yourong's stolen star array, which was the true prize of Nan Ke's pursuit.
It was revealed that Xu Yourong, proficient in divination, had used the array to deduce the location of Zhou Dufu's independent miniature world, a realm whose secrets held immense significance for the destinies of both Humans and monsters.
