Being a Hero Episode 5 Recap
> Being a Hero Recap
Lan Anran pressed Chen Yu, questioning if he believed Wu Zhenfeng, especially after pharmacy surveillance footage revealed a prior leak to Lao Ba before their arrival. She pointed out the uncommon connection between Chen Yu and Wu Zhenfeng, noting that Chen Yu also possessed a jade pendant identical to Wu Zhenfeng's. She also questioned why Liu Kaihua had removed Chen Yu from the interrogation room the previous night.
Chen Yu explained that Wu Zhenfeng indicated Huang Wenlin likely operated Mo Yun Bar as a drug dealing front and might be there. He stressed the importance of verifying this information discreetly, fearing another leak similar to the failed Ba Peng (Lao Ba) operation. Recognizing their limited numbers, Chen Yu decided to involve Yang Yi, believing him to be trustworthy. When Yang Yi arrived, Chen Yu presented the unconfirmed lead about Huang Wenlin’s bar.
Yang Yi immediately suggested reporting such an important clue to their superiors. Chen Yu stopped him, reiterating that the information was unverified and a premature report could lead to another failure due to leaks. Despite Yang Yi’s persistent concerns about disciplinary issues, Chen Yu firmly insisted on verifying the information first before reporting, framing it as a crucial opportunity for them to prove themselves. They eventually agreed, with Yang Yi ensuring they would report any confirmed findings immediately.
Before entering the bar, Lan Anran was equipped with a listening device for their safety and to keep them informed of the situation inside. Inside Mo Yun Bar, Huang Wenlin, known as "Brother Xian," was seen negotiating with a Hong Kong drug dealer named "Brother Can."
Huang Wenlin offered to sell all his "big yellow capsules" at a low price of two million cash, citing a need to "run away" due to the precarious situation in Yunhe and the risk of operating within Hao Dong’s territory. He expressed urgency, explaining that this transaction had to be kept hidden from Hao Dong, with whom Brother Can had previously conducted business. Brother Can, wary, asked Huang Wenlin to secure a transaction location for the next day before committing.
Soon after Brother Can departed, Lan Anran entered the bar. She approached Huang Wenlin, claiming she used to source drugs from Lao Ba and that he had directed her there. Huang Wenlin, however, implied that Lao Ba was unaware of this particular location, raising immediate concerns for Chen Yu and Yang Yi listening outside. As they grew increasingly worried and contemplated intervening, Huang Wenlin became suspicious of Lan Anran and spotted the police outside.
He quickly ordered his men, including "Long Hair," to destroy all the "big yellow capsules" by lighting them. Just as the drugs were ignited with detonators, Chen Yu burst in. Acting swiftly, he grabbed one of the live detonators and threw it out of a window, averting a major explosion. Simultaneously, Liu Kaihua and his team arrived, securing the scene and apprehending Huang Wenlin and his accomplices.
Back at the station, Liu Kaihua severely reprimanded Chen Yu for his unauthorized actions, accusing him of being disorganized and undisciplined, especially after the incident was reported on the news. Lin Dezan echoed Liu Kaihua's sentiments, stressing the importance of reporting intelligence promptly and how Yang Yi’s prior report, despite their agreement not to, was fortunate. Yang Yi attempted to defend Chen Yu, suggesting he was just eager for merit after returning to the Anti-Narcotics Division.
This comment infuriated Chen Yu, but Lan Anran intervened, explaining their decision to act independently stemmed from the previous failed arrest of Lao Ba, hinting at an internal leak. Lin Dezan, visibly distressed, pressed them to reveal their suspicions, but they remained silent, lacking concrete evidence. Lin Dezan then instructed them to submit a thorough self-criticism. Despite the reprimand, Chen Yu remained convinced that Wu Zhenfeng withheld crucial information and requested to re-interrogate him.
Concurrently, Liu Kaihua questioned Huang Wenlin about his whereabouts on the night of the 9th, when Hu Qingshan was murdered. Huang Wenlin maintained that he was at "Yiming Skewers." Meanwhile, Chen Yu interrogated Wu Zhenfeng, informing him that Huang Wenlin denied being at "Weixiang Restaurant," thereby strengthening the evidence pointing to Wu Zhenfeng as Hu Qingshan's killer.
Wu Zhenfeng adamantly denied the murder, asserting that Huang Wenlin’s men had drugged him, causing him to lose consciousness, and he remembered nothing after that. He urged Chen Yu to believe in his innocence. Lan Anran and Liu Kaihua followed up on Huang Wenlin’s past employment at a pharmaceutical factory. They discovered that during his time as a warehouse manager, several thefts of controlled raw materials, key ingredients for "big yellow capsules," occurred.
The factory's deputy director, Li Zhengqiang, consistently covered up these incidents, dismissing them as minor losses without involving the police. Lan Anran retrieved records for Li Zhengqiang and found that the information aligned with what Wu Zhenfeng had previously stated, implicating Li Zhengqiang. This confirmed that Huang Wenlin and Li Zhengqiang had been using the factory as a cover to steal materials for illegal drug production.
Confronted with this overwhelming evidence, Huang Wenlin finally confessed, admitting that Li Zhengqiang was the one who killed Hu Qingshan. Huang Wenlin recounted the sequence of events from the night of the 9th. Li Zhengqiang, referred to as "Strong Brother," had called him, furious that "Brother Feng" (Wu Zhenfeng) was threatening to expose their drug manufacturing operation to Hao Dong. Li Zhengqiang resolved to eliminate Hu Qingshan.
Recognizing "Brother Feng" as Wu Zhenfeng, Huang Wenlin conspired with Li Zhengqiang to frame Wu Zhenfeng. They lured Wu Zhenfeng out, drugged his drink, and when he became aggressive, they beat him. Afterwards, they copied his fingerprints to plant them at the crime scene, effectively framing him for Hu Qingshan's murder. The underlying motive for killing Hu Qingshan was that Wu Zhenfeng, hailing from Mengka, intended to use Hao Dong’s distribution channels.
When Hao Dong refused, Li Zhengqiang and Huang Wenlin decided to offer their "big yellow capsules" as a "pledge of allegiance" to Hao Dong, leveraging the framed murder to their advantage. Separately, Hao Dong, also known as "Brother Dong," confronted Li Zhengqiang, holding him accountable for a past incident where Li Zhengqiang had caused another individual, Lao Zhang, to lose an arm. Hao Dong proceeded to assault Li Zhengqiang.
Under interrogation, Huang Wenlin disclosed Li Zhengqiang's current hiding place: an abandoned warehouse located on the east side of the pharmaceutical factory, where their remaining drug supply was also stored. Armed with this crucial intelligence, Chen Yu led a team, fully equipped, towards the location to apprehend Li Zhengqiang and secure the evidence.
