> Legend of Zang Hai Recap

After completing his studies, Zhinu went to the capital to seek revenge and changed his name to Zang Hai. Gao Ming arrived early in the capital to wait for him. Master Xing Dou escorted Zang Hai to the foot of the mountain. Curious, Zang Hai asked why Master Xing Dou and his masked master had saved him and taught him civil engineering.

Master Xing Dou casually admitted that they both existed for Zang Hai’s sake and told him to go to the capital and ask Gao Ming for the details. Master Xing Dou instructed Zang Hai to head to the Zhen Lou upon arrival, where someone would receive him. Zang Hai bid farewell to Master Xing Dou and embarked on his journey of revenge.

Master Xing Dou then ordered his disciples to burn down the place where Zang Hai had studied for the past ten years. Enduring the elements along the way, Zang Hai traveled day and night until he reached the capital. He headed directly to Zhen Lou, the most renowned brothel in the capital, bustling with guests and lively music. As soon as Zang Hai entered, he sat in the most prominent seat—Suzaku Head—and asked the attendant to light a lamp.

The performers soon brought him a golden, gleaming lamp and clearly stated that the Suzaku Head was reserved for the most honored guests. If Zang Hai insisted on lighting the lamp, he would have to rent the entire Wangyue Pavilion, tip all the performers, and cover the tea and wine expenses of all the guests. The last person to light the lamp had been Prince Yongrong.

Being new to the place and unaware of the rules, Zang Hai got up to leave but was stopped by the performer. He took out his only seven taels of silver, and the performer led him to the general seating downstairs. Downstairs, the shadow play of Eighth Young Master was being performed. The performer explained the play to Zang Hai, who immediately recognized that the dragon and phoenix in the play represented the deceased Empress Dowager and the current Emperor.

The performer explained that the toad in the play symbolized the noisy civil officials, the rooster represented the Prince of Linzi, and the white tiger stood for the Marquis of Pingjin. The court was divided into two factions: one led by the Prince of Linzi and the civil officials, who wanted to move the Emperor’s biological mother, Noble Consort Li, out of the imperial tomb and have her buried with the late Emperor and the Empress Dowager.

The Emperor, unable to withstand their pestering, had gone into hiding. The other faction, led by the Marquis of Pingjin, advocated maintaining the status quo. The Emperor assigned the Ministry of Works to handle the Empress Dowager’s burial. The Vice Minister of Works was Zhuang Zhixing, son of Zhuang Luyin of the Marquis of Pingjin, who was seeking feng shui masters across the land. Zang Hai accidentally noticed several suspicious individuals and suspected they were targeting Eighth Young Master.

He advised the performer to leave quickly to avoid getting into trouble. The performer immediately recognized them as secret agents under Eunuch Cao of the Imperial Surveillance Bureau. Eunuch Cao was the head of all eunuchs in the empire, and his agents were present everywhere from government offices to inns and taverns. Though Zhen Lou bore a plaque personally inscribed by the Emperor, which should have deterred the agents from acting rashly, Zang Hai sensed that something was different today.

He believed that the Eighth Young Master’s satire of the current political situation through the play could bring about his doom. The performer begged Zang Hai to help save Eighth Young Master, but Zang Hai didn’t want to get involved and got up to leave. The performer then publicly declared that Zang Hai was Eighth Young Master, causing an uproar. The agents sprang out to kill Zang Hai, who fled in panic. The performer followed and guided him.

Zang Hai ran into a small alley, where Gao Ming arrived just in time to rescue him, pretending that Zang Hai was a drunken young noble. The agents had no choice but to leave in frustration. Gao Ming took Zang Hai to an inn, where Zang Hai recounted everything the performer had told him.

Gao Ming incisively pointed out that the key to the burial of the Empress Dowager lay with the Emperor, and that no matter what Zhuang Luyin did, he would be in the wrong. Outside, the city was in chaos—Zhuang Luyin had ordered a citywide arrest of feng shui masters, sparing no one, not even coffin shop owners or butchers. Gao Ming and Zang Hai watched through a crack in the door.

Qu Jiao led people to arrest Master Fan of the coffin shop and his son. Zang Hai stepped forward and claimed he was the feng shui master, begging Qu Jiao to release Master Fan’s son. Qu Jiao arrested both Zang Hai and Master Fan. Master Fan was deeply grateful to Zang Hai. Zang Hai and the others arrested were taken to the Marquis of Pingjin’s mansion and locked in an underground chamber.

When someone tried to escape and accidentally triggered a mechanism, he was killed on the spot. Zang Hai warned everyone not to act rashly or touch anything. Zang Hai discovered that the chamber was built according to the positions of the Nine Stars. He quickly found the secret exit and instructed everyone to stand on the trigger points accordingly. Zhuang Luyin treated lives as expendable and slaughtered at the slightest displeasure.

To silence the Emperor and the officials, he had put up a façade, ordering Chu Huaiming and Qu Jiao to gather more than eighty feng shui masters from all over and locked them all in the passage. Zang Hai led Master Fan and the others step by step through the passage. The traps were complex, incorporating even tomb corridors from the previous dynasty. Zang Hai solved them all one by one, and with full cooperation from Master Fan and the others, they successfully evaded one deadly trap after another.
