After a captivating pipa performance, Zhai Lanye emerged from behind a gauze curtain, her beauty stunning everyone present. Yuan Jinxia meticulously observed Zhai Lanye and her servant's attire. When she inquired about her exquisite dress, Zhai Lanye graciously replied that she had made it herself. Zhai Lanye then subtly asked Lu Yi if he was married, lamenting that despite her many admirers, none truly loved her beyond her superficial beauty, referring to herself as a "lean horse."

While conversing politely, Lu Yi discreetly surveyed the boat's surroundings. Later, Yuan Jinxia reported her observations to Lu Yi: Zhai Lanye had a kind disposition, her family was wealthy, and she had recently snuck out on a rainy day, catching a cold. This connected to the fact that Zhou Xianyi had been arrested on a rainy day.

Jinxia surmised that Zhai Lanye was being coerced into flattering high-ranking officials by her adoptive family, who demanded a 10,000-tael gift for her hand in marriage. Lu Yi instructed Yuan Jinxia to swiftly investigate Zhai Lanye's background and, most importantly, her whereabouts on the night before Zhou Xianyi's arrest. Afterward, Jinxia couldn't resist teasing Lu Yi about being the object of Zhai Lanye's admiration, only to be cut off by Yang Yue.

Later, in the detention room, Zhou Xianyi heard someone singing an eerie song. A mysterious figure then appeared before him, and moments later, he was found dead. Lu Yi was immediately informed. Yuan Jinxia conducted an autopsy, reporting that there were no obvious injuries on the body, but Zhou Xianyi's pupils were dilated and his eardrum had burst, indicating he had died from extreme fright. The lock on the detention room remained intact.

When an official, Mr. Wei, suggested reporting the death as a suicide to close the case, Lu Yi sternly rejected the idea, accusing him of shirking responsibility. He then assigned Yuan Jinxia the task of thoroughly investigating the cause of death. At dinner with Yang Chengwan and Yang Yue, Yuan Jinxia deliberately recounted a gruesome autopsy story involving maggots in a corpse, comparing the maggots to the rice in their bowls.

This successfully repulsed both Cen Fu and Lu Yi, causing them to lose their appetite and leave the table, though Yuan Jinxia and Yang Yue found themselves equally disgusted. In the imperial court, the Emperor was gravely concerned about Zhou Xianyi's death and the missing 100,000 taels of silver. He reprimanded the Ministry of Works and ordered a thorough investigation to recover the funds, later privately emphasizing the case's importance to Lu Yi.

The next day, Yuan Jinxia approached Lu Yi with a voucher for the boat rental and refreshments, totaling 2. 5 taels. Lu Yi agreed to cover the 2 taels for the boat but refused the 0. 5 taels for refreshments, claiming Yuan Jinxia had consumed them all. Unable to argue, Jinxia began diligently cleaning Lu Yi's room to earn the reimbursement, to his secret amusement.

Satisfied, Lu Yi gave her a strange task: go to Zhou Xianyi's house that night, light a lamp on the second floor with the windows open, and wait until she heard roosters crow three times before leaving. Only then would he fully reimburse her. That rainy night, while in the house with a stray cat, Jinxia spotted Lu Yi in the building opposite. He beckoned her over. On the deserted street, Lu Yi approached her with an umbrella.

Jinxia noted that the building Lu Yi had been in was Zhai Lanye's former residence, which she had moved out of shortly after Zhou's arrest, deepening suspicion. Lu Yi shared his umbrella, tilting it to cover her and the cat, letting his own shoulder get soaked. When she looked at him in surprise, Lu Yi stated that the drenched cat was pathetic. Jinxia then quipped if she wasn't pathetic too, but Lu Yi remained silent.

He explained the rooster task was a ruse to see if her "righteous" presence would affect any "dirty things" in the house, admitting it was a form of training. The following day, Zhai Lanye visited Lu Yi, having learned his true identity from Shangguan Xi. Lu Yi, unsurprised, feigned that he had missed her since their first meeting and, out of curiosity, had investigated her, discovering her "close contact" with Zhou Xianyi.

Zhai Lanye denied a deep relationship, but when Lu Yi pressed her, revealing he had seen her room from the attic window of Zhou Xianyi's residence, she grew flustered. She then dramatically grasped Lu Yi's hand, declaring she had never truly loved any man until she met him. Yuan Jinxia, passing by outside, witnessed this surprising declaration, and Lu Yi, noticing her, swiftly withdrew his hand.

Later, Xie Xiao took Yuan Jinxia to see a play by the Chunxi Troupe, which had left Yangzhou years ago after a notorious murder. When Jinxia mentioned Zhou Xianyi's unusual death, Xie Xiao recalled his master teaching him about the mastoid process, an acupuncture point behind the ear that, if pressed forcefully with a needle, could cause a burst eardrum and death, a method eerily similar to the old Chunxi Troupe murder.

Jinxia rushed back to re-examine Zhou Xianyi's body and discovered a silver needle precisely in the mastoid process. Just then, Lu Yi appeared, startling her. She relayed her findings and Xie Xiao's information. Lu Yi, however, reacted with sarcasm, questioning her quick friendship with Xie Xiao before leaving abruptly. Yuan Jinxia and Lu Yi disguised themselves in rough clothes to infiltrate the Chunxi Troupe.

When Lu Yi questioned why she chose him for the undercover mission, Jinxia flattered him, stating his good looks were essential for their act. They staged a fake robbery, allowing Jinxia to "save" the troupe leader. Jinxia then concocted a tearful story about being flood refugees who lost their families, expressing a desire to become apprentices. Her convincing performance, which even surprised Lu Yi, moved the troupe leader to accept them.

He introduced them to Changsheng, a senior apprentice, who spoke of the troupe's glorious past and a famous former "leading actor" before taking them to choose costumes. Yuan Jinxia eagerly donned her outfit, while Lu Yi looked visibly uncomfortable in his.
