At their dinner, Xie Xiao explained that for the past three years, he and Sha Xiuzhu had only robbed the rich to feed the poor, never committing true evil. He took full responsibility for stealing the birthday gifts, an idea born from his outrage at Jian Zhen and his son's bullying of villagers. While declaring he couldn't abandon Sha Xiuzhu, he promised not to implicate Yuan Jinxia.

Yuan Jinxia acknowledged his courage but reminded him that Sha Xiuzhu broke the law and must be punished. She warned him of the serious consequences if Lu Yi pursued the matter, stressing that as a constable, she couldn't afford to lose her job. When Xie Xiao questioned why a woman like her had to work so hard, Yuan Jinxia retorted with a fiery speech, reminding him of the importance of women like his mother, Shangguan Xi, and herself.

Brushing off his suggestion that she was drunk, she proudly claimed she had never been inebriated, then drank more wine and promptly passed out. Meanwhile, Lu Yi invited Shangguan Xi for tea, remarking on Yangzhou's poetic charm. He returned a piece of her jewelry he had found, revealing he knew of her involvement. Commenting on her good but impatient martial arts, he directly questioned the wisdom of stealing birthday gifts and causing an explosion at the Prosecutor's office.

Shangguan Xi feigned ignorance until Lu Yi threatened to confront Xie Xiao directly, forcing her to drop the act. After Lu Yi effortlessly subdued her in a brief fight, she resignedly asked him to name his price to resolve the matter. Xie Xiao carried the unconscious Yuan Jinxia back to the yamen, where they were met by a stern-faced Lu Yi.

After taking Yuan Jinxia from Xie Xiao, Lu Yi ignored his advice to make her tea and, annoyed, simply placed her on a bed before leaving, remarking that she had clearly enjoyed herself too much. The next morning, Cen Fu delivered a message from Lu Yi: the case had to be closed before she could return to the capital. To that end, she, Cen Fu, and Yang Yue were to escort Sha Xiuzhu.

During the escort, as Yuan Jinxia and Yang Yue chatted about Yang Yue's father's past as an Embroidered Uniform Guard, they were ambushed. While a diversionary group distracted the guards, a masked Xie Xiao and Shangguan Xi descended to free Sha Xiuzhu. Yuan Jinxia immediately pursued Xie Xiao, leaving Yang Yue to face Shangguan Xi. Xie Xiao unmasked himself and pleaded with Yuan Jinxia, explaining Sha Xiuzhu's loyalty to him and his inability to abandon a friend.

Caught between duty and friendship, Yuan Jinxia hesitated, her blade at his neck. Meanwhile, after a few exchanges, Shangguan Xi also unmasked. A flustered Yang Yue tried to justify his duty, but she revealed the entire rescue was a pre-arranged plan with Lu Yi, questioning how else they would know the precise escort time and why Lu Yi would send such a small detail for a supposedly important prisoner.

She told him to ask his boss for the truth and departed, leaving Yang Yue bewildered. Yuan Jinxia lowered her blade, unable to harm her friend. To salvage her job, she told Xie Xiao to cut her arm, instructing him to avoid the main meridians. Recalling how she defended him in their childhood, Xie Xiao couldn't bring himself to do it.

Seeing his hesitation, Yuan Jinxia hardened her resolve, cut her own arm, and urged a shocked Xie Xiao to flee. When she reported back, Lu Yi noted her wound with suspicion but said nothing. He later had Cen Fu give her special medicine from the North Bureau, instructing him to conceal its origin. Yuan Jinxia accepted Cen Fu's apology for the failed escort but, wary of a trap, declined the medicine.

Later that night, Yuan Jinxia awoke from a nightmare about her grandfather and his collection of handguns to find she had a fever from her infected wound. Just then, Xie Xiao appeared at her window with medicine from the Wu'an Sect. Panicked that he would be discovered, she urged him to leave, but it was too late—Lu Yi knocked on the door. After she frantically hid Xie Xiao, Lu Yi entered, sensing something was amiss.

Noting her fever and the unused medicine, he tossed another vial on the floor, ordering her to use it. As he left, he pointedly remarked that one should close their windows to keep thieves out. Once he was gone, Yuan Jinxia ushered Xie Xiao out the window and applied the medicine Lu Yi had left, realizing it was the same as what Cen Fu had offered and that Lu Yi had been secretly concerned for her.

Yang Yue secretly witnessed Shangguan Xi returning the stolen birthday gifts to Lu Yi. The exchange confirmed that Shangguan Xi had cooperated because Lu Yi had threatened her sect, proving her earlier claim of a pre-arranged rescue was true. When Yang Yue told Yuan Jinxia, she was furious that her injury was for a case Lu Yi had already orchestrated.

She now understood that his uncharacteristic kindness in sending medicine stemmed from guilt, and she resolved to keep her distance from him. Lu Yi sent a detailed report to the Emperor exposing the crimes of Jian Zhen and his son. With the Cao Kun case still cold, he requested to remain in Yangzhou. The Emperor, pleased with the results, ordered the Jian family to be investigated and rewarded Lu Yi with 10,000 taels of silver.

Six Doors received 100 taels, an amount Yuan Jinxia found deeply unfair. Meanwhile, Sir Zhou of the Ministry of Works hired the Wu'an Sect to escort 10,000 taels of silver for river embankment reconstruction. After Shangguan Xi and Xie Xiao saw the funds safely to the treasury, they departed, unaware that Yan Shifan coveted the money and planned to seize it.

Just as Yang Chengwan prepared to return to the capital with Yuan Jinxia and Yang Yue, Lu Yi persuaded them to extend their stay. He insisted that Yang Chengwan see a renowned orthopaedic specialist, Shen Mi, to treat his old leg injury, explaining it was a thank-you for his help and an instruction from his own father. The doctor determined that the leg needed to be re-broken and set, followed by three months of recuperation without martial arts.

When Yang Chengwan hesitated, Lu Yi offered to arrange a six-month leave for him from Six Doors headquarters. Yuan Jinxia thanked Lu Yi, who replied that her staying out of trouble would be thanks enough. Shortly after, the 10,000 taels of river funds vanished from the treasury. Sir Zhou was arrested for embezzlement, and the Emperor ordered Lu Yi to investigate.

Needing Six Doors' assistance, Lu Yi arranged for Yang Chengwan to be officially transferred to the North Bureau, allowing him to recuperate while still being assigned to the case. Yuan Jinxia, ever practical, perked up when she learned the case came with a monthly subsidy of four taels of silver, eagerly declaring her readiness to serve. Lu Yi announced their investigation would begin at the prison, where he presented an imperial decree, granting the Embroidered Uniform Guard full control over the case and the prisoner.
