Following Lin Ling's discovery that her sister's daughter was still alive, she resolved to find her. Yang Chengwan, having previously investigated without success, agreed to revisit the locations with her, hoping they might uncover new clues together. Meanwhile, Yuan Jinxia and Xie Xiao were teaching Chunyu Min to play pai gow. Lu Yi, upon his return, chided Yuan Jinxia for introducing Min to a street game, warning her not to lead the delicate girl astray.

Jinxia playfully retorted, accusing Lu Yi of hiding his beautiful cousin, perhaps fearing someone might be attracted to her. Xie Xiao added that Min's parents had repeatedly inquired about Lu Yi's marriage, suggesting they hoped for a match between the cousins. Jinxia continued to tease Lu Yi, speculating that Min might be the girl in his heart. Lu Yi challenged her, asking how she would react if he confirmed it.

Jinxia forced a smile and offered her congratulations, praising Min as a well-educated woman from a respectable family, making them a perfect match. Their exchange was interrupted by the arrival of Yang Yue and Shangguan Xi. Yang Yue, upon seeing Jinxia, expressed his relief and amusement at her unchanged playful nature. Surprised by his bluntness, Jinxia led Shangguan Xi away for a private talk, while a displeased Yang Yue challenged Xie Xiao to a duel.

Jinxia apologized to Shangguan Xi for the awkward situation, acknowledging that her presence had prompted Xie Xiao to annul the engagement. Shangguan Xi reassured her that no apology was needed, smiling warmly and stating she was not one to harbor resentment over romance. She confessed she had already made her feelings clear to Xie Xiao and that attraction cannot be forced. She even thanked Jinxia, admitting that Xie Xiao's decision had finally awakened her from her one-sided affection.

Elsewhere, Lin Ling was packing for her journey when Beggar Uncle, concerned that her public appearance would alert Yan Shifan, insisted on accompanying her. As he stepped out to check on their carriage, Zhai Lanye and Yan Feng infiltrated the residence, subdued Lin Ling, and escaped through a window. Beggar Uncle returned just in time to see them flee but was unable to stop them. In his distress, he momentarily forgot they were with Yang Chengwan, the world's finest tracker.

Once reminded, Yang Chengwan identified the culprits' footprints—one deep and small, the other shallow and large, indicating a man and a woman—and set off with Beggar Uncle in hot pursuit. Later, Min asked Lu Yi if his earlier remark about being interested in her was serious. Lu Yi dismissed it as a disrespectful slip of the tongue, and a relieved Min then persuaded him to help get her parents' permission to learn horse riding.

Overjoyed, she embraced his arm affectionately just as Yuan Jinxia and Shangguan Xi approached, causing Min to quickly withdraw her hand in embarrassment. Nearby, Yang Yue was fiercely sparring with Xie Xiao, accusing him of hurting Shangguan Xi. When the others intervened, Xie Xiao demanded Shangguan Xi clarify their relationship to the "unreasonable" Yang Yue. To his shock, Shangguan Xi confessed that Yang Yue was right; she had indeed been in love with Xie Xiao.

She explained how she had worked tirelessly to become a worthy match for him, only to realize that love cannot be earned or forced. She admitted that even after he fled their wedding, she had held onto hope, but his letter canceling the engagement finally made her accept that her love had always been unrequited. Announcing she was tired, she left for the Wu'an Sect's branch, leaving a stunned Xie Xiao behind.

While holding Lin Ling captive, Yan Feng was eager to return to the capital, but Zhai Lanye, harboring her own motives, persuaded him to wait until dark, arguing that Yang Chengwan's tracking skills made daytime travel too risky. As they waited, Zhai Lanye contemplated Lin Ling's connection to Yan Shifan. Noticing Lin Ling's small feet, she recalled Yan Shifan's peculiar rule that any woman he desired must have feet shorter than 20.

5 cm—a standard that had led to her own repeated rejections. Concluding that Lin Ling was the reason for her failures, she became determined to prevent their reunion. Growing impatient, Zhai Lanye used a pretext to get close to Lin Ling and attempted to assassinate her with a poison needle. At that critical moment, Yang Chengwan and Beggar Uncle burst in and rescued Lin Ling.

Zhai Lanye, rather than giving chase, feigned a severe injury to avoid both pursuit and punishment. Enraged by their failure, Yan Feng wanted to drag her back to face Yan Shifan, but she remained defiant. With her location now known, Beggar Uncle urged Lin Ling to go into hiding, but she staunchly refused, determined to find her niece's daughter. The group later visited a horse ranch.

Xie Xiao teased Lu Yi and Min, calling them a good match, but Lu Yi deflected, hinting that Xie Xiao's own affection for Jinxia was not necessarily returned. Min spotted a wild stallion and insisted on riding it, but the stable manager, Yun Bo, refused out of concern for her safety. Jinxia gently persuaded Min to choose a tamer horse instead. Once they were gone, Xie Xiao challenged Lu Yi to a horse-taming contest.

Lu Yi calmly declined, stating that if Jinxia was meant to be with him, there was no need to compete. Meanwhile, Shangguan Xi studied the ranch's horse-feeding techniques and asked Yang Yue for his opinion on Min. Misunderstanding, Yang Yue quickly denied any interest, prompting Shangguan Xi to clarify that Min was smitten with Yuan Jinxia. Realizing the complication of Jinxia's disguise, Yang Yue grew concerned, but Shangguan Xi assured him Jinxia had the discretion to handle it.

Ignoring Lu Yi's earlier warning, Xie Xiao foolishly attempted to tame the wild stallion himself. His efforts only startled the horse, causing it to break free and charge toward Yuan Jinxia and Min. Both Lu Yi and Xie Xiao rushed to help. Jinxia shoved Min to safety, though Min's hand was grazed in the process. While Jinxia tended to the wound, Shangguan Xi admonished Xie Xiao for his recklessness.

Watching the friends interact, Min wistfully remarked that she envied their camaraderie, as she rarely saw her own brother. Jinxia kindly reassured her that she had friends among them now, and Min’s shy smile in response seemed to finally make Lu Yi aware of the depth of her feelings for "Mr. Yuan." Back at the Yan Mansion, Yan Feng knelt to beg forgiveness for failing to capture Lin Ling.

Upon learning that Yang Chengwan had rescued her, Yan Shifan recalled the tracker's connection to the Lin family's past. He stopped Yan Feng from taking his own life and forbade any further use of force against Lin Ling, declaring his intention to travel to Yangzhou himself to win her over willingly. Meanwhile, in the capital, Lan Qingxuan met with Advisor Xu, presenting Lu Yi's letter of recommendation.

Acknowledging the political sensitivity of recommending an alchemist after the recent scandal, Lan Qingxuan expressed his willingness to wait for the right moment. When asked what set him apart, he offered a philosophy on conscience and human intention that greatly impressed Advisor Xu, who agreed to arrange his introduction to the Emperor.
