Yuan Jinxia, having pleaded with Lu Yi to no avail, was ordered to clean the stables as punishment for her mistake. Grumbling and holding her nose, she struggled through the chore, wondering why her usual tactics had failed to work on him. Observing her, Lu Yi silently questioned why Master Mu would accept such a disciple, deeming her a disgrace to his reputation.
Yuan Jinxia returned home late, where her mother, who had reheated her dinner multiple times, was waiting with a stern lecture. Her mother revealed a gift intended for Matchmaker Wang, explaining her plan to arrange a marriage for Jinxia with the third son of Mr. Yi, a well-educated private school teacher. Jinxia, however, had no desire to marry, especially not into a family that might look down on her.
Her mother recalled Jinxia's rambunctious childhood, when she earned the nicknames "Yasha" and "Tiger" for her mischief, lamenting that no matchmakers would approach her now. Jinxia playfully argued that Yasha and tigers were carefree deities. Her mother, fearing she would one day pass away and leave Jinxia alone, pressed the issue. Jinxia deflected by praising her mother's cooking before quickly slipping away to do the dishes.
Meanwhile, Cao Ling'er secretly met her father, Cao Kun, in a dilapidated house on the outskirts of the capital. Before she could enter, Lu Yi stopped Jinxia, who had been following Ling'er. Inside, Cao Kun, wearing a human skin mask that initially startled his daughter, was about to flee with her when Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia appeared and cornered them. Lu Yi subdued the injured Cao Kun and pressed him for the location of the stolen military map.
Jinxia explained how Cao Kun had faked his death by swapping clothes with a servant, setting the room ablaze, and that his only weakness was his daughter. Defiant, Cao Kun offered a twisted deal: he would reveal everything if Lu Yi killed Jinxia. As Cao Ling'er panicked, Jinxia, though initially startled by Lu Yi's sword pointed at her, quickly realized Cao Kun was trying to sow discord.
Lu Yi then cleverly turned his sword on Cao Ling'er, forcing Cao Kun to break. Desperate, Cao Kun confessed he was tasked with stealing the map and taking it to the coast. Before he could reveal more, a black-clad assassin fired an arrow, killing him instantly.
As Cao Ling'er grieved, Jinxia examined the body and deduced the map's hiding place from moss on his sleeves, wet shoe soles, and red paint under his fingernails, indicating a high, watery location with a red wall. Recognizing her exceptional tracking skills, Lu Yi asked her to lead the way. Yuan Jinxia led Lu Yi to a bridge, where she spotted the military map hidden in a high archway.
She climbed up to retrieve it but stumbled and fell into Lu Yi's arms. Lu Yi, with a displeased expression, quickly left. Jinxia was relieved he hadn't noticed the dust she left on his clothes, only to hear his cold voice from behind, informing her that the clothes would be sent to her for washing. She had no choice but to agree.
Lu Yi presented the recovered map to the Emperor, reporting the discovery of a mysterious tattoo on Cao Kun’s wrist, similar to those found on Japanese individuals. He speculated that Cao Kun’s theft was linked to Japanese pirates in the Southeast and orchestrated by a powerful figure within the court. The Emperor, expressing his disdain for corrupt officials, commanded Lu Yi to travel to Jiangnan.
The investigation into the Jian Zhen case would serve as a public cover for Lu Yi's secret mission to uncover the conspiracy. Back home, Jinxia begrudgingly washed Lu Yi’s clothes, loudly complaining about his ruthless nature. Yang Yue explained that the Embroidered Uniform Guards operate directly under the Emperor, requiring them to be merciless.
Meanwhile, Lu Yi's father, Lu Ting, advised his son to be cautious in Yangzhou, especially since the case involved the imperial family, and suggested he utilize Yang Chengwan of Department Six for his tracking skills. Subsequently, Yang Chengwan instructed his son, Yang Yue, and his apprentice, Yuan Jinxia, to prepare to accompany Lu Yi to Yangzhou, much to Jinxia's dismay. Later, Jinxia visited Lu Yi, ostensibly to return his clean clothes but primarily to reclaim her hand cannon.
After her persistent requests, Lu Yi returned it. While waiting, her attention was drawn to a "konghou" in the courtyard. Lu Yi explained that the one from the auction was a fake, whereas this was the genuine Linlang "konghou". Jinxia excitedly rushed home, discovering her hand cannon had been subtly modified, making it even better to use. Cao Ling'er sought out Yuan Jinxia to bid farewell.
With her father dead and her family's reputation ruined, she planned to leave the capital with a distant aunt and live quietly in her hometown. Jinxia encouraged her to value herself like a jewel and wished her a safe journey. The Yangzhou trip was suddenly moved up, forcing Jinxia into a hurried departure. Her mother presented her with two new outfits and tried to persuade her to stay for a pre-arranged marriage meeting.
Citing the mission's urgency, Jinxia declined, gave her mother part of her two-month advance salary, and rushed to the dock. Onboard the ship, she saw many men transporting large, waxed boxes. Yang Yue explained they were subordinates of Wang Fangxing, an Assistant Commander, escorting birthday gifts to Yangzhou for the Supporter-generalissimo's 50th birthday. Jinxia realized this was the true reason for Lu Yi's covert operation.
After a brief clash with one of Wang's rude guards, her curiosity was piqued by the heavily waxed boxes. In the imperial court, Yan Song suggested appointing Huang Yu to a crucial border post. The Minister of War, Xu, vouched for Huang Yu's experience against Japanese pirates, and the Emperor issued an edict making him the Director-general of the Northeast.
Aboard the ship, Jinxia and Yang Yue were curtly turned away by Lu Yi's guards, who handed them their cabin assignments and told them not to disturb their master. Jinxia despaired at the strong moldy smell in her cabin. Yang Yue, after using tea leaves to deodorize his and his father's cabin, promised to help her next. Yang Chengwan reminded his son to remain vigilant, observant, and cautious during the mission. Later, Yang Yue found Jinxia on deck and offered her a piece of cake.
