While Yuan Jinxia stalled Mao Haifeng by pretending to draw the pistol schematic, Lu Yi and Mr. Beggar secretly untied their ropes. After Lu Yi gave her a signal, Jinxia swiftly snatched her pistol back from Mao. Mr. Beggar then held off Mao's men, creating an opening for Lu Yi and Jinxia to escape. As they fled, Yuan Jinxia hid a weakened Lu Yi in a pile of straw and lured the pursuing Japanese pirates away.
Meanwhile, Mr. Beggar was also being chased. When Jinxia returned, she and Lu Yi were cornered at a cliff edge by Mao Haifeng. Mao continued to demand the pistol drawing, unaware that Lu Yi, who understood Japanese, had heard his plan to kill them. Lu Yi had been feigning the severity of his poisoning. When Mao, realizing his plot was exposed, offered to procure an antidote as a last-ditch bargain, Lu Yi ignored him.
Instead, he embraced Jinxia and leaped from the cliff. They managed to grab onto a vine, but it began to give way under their combined weight. Jinxia offered to let go to save him, but Lu Yi told her to trust him, released his grip, and skillfully landed them on a narrow ledge below. From the clifftop, Xie Xiao, Shangguan Xi, and Yang Yue witnessed the jump and intervened, driving Mao Haifeng and his men away.
Seeing Lu Yi and Jinxia were safe on the ledge, they decided to find a way to the bottom of the cliff. Elsewhere, Mr. Beggar easily defeated his pursuers with his superior martial arts. After reuniting with Lu Yi and Jinxia, Mr. Beggar noticed Lu Yi had used his internal force and sternly warned him that doing so again could be fatal.
When Jinxia pressed to find the skilled doctor he had mentioned, Mr. Beggar grew hesitant, revealing the doctor had a strict rule: she refused to treat officials. Jinxia suggested they hide Lu Yi's identity, but Lu Yi was against deceiving the doctor. However, seeing Lu Yi's condition worsen, Jinxia pleaded with Mr. Beggar, who reluctantly agreed to their plan.
Mr. Beggar rowed them towards the doctor's secluded home, explaining he owed the doctor, Lin Ling, a debt from their youth and would not be meeting her. During the journey, Lu Yi coughed up dark blood, which attracted numerous venomous snakes to their boat, terrifying Jinxia. Meanwhile, Mao Haifeng met with Yan Shifan, complaining about how Lu Yi and Jinxia had ruined his plans and how Jinxia had shot him.
Yan Shifan was amused that a mere constable could injure Mao. After reaching the shore, Mr. Beggar gave Lu Yi and Jinxia directions to Lin Ling's home, "Maple Col," through a dangerous forest, along with a protective powder made of lime and realgar. Jinxia applied it to her own face before playfully smearing some on Lu Yi's, a moment of intimacy that was interrupted by Mr. Beggar jokingly accusing her of taking advantage of his "grandson."
Lu Yi watched her, amused. Before leaving, Mr. Beggar warned them to be discreet, as the doctor disliked talkative people. During his meeting with Mao Haifeng, Yan Shifan instructed Di Lanye to serve Mao wine. When Mao's hand lingered inappropriately near her, Yan Shifan coldly warned that he disliked others touching his "possessions" but enjoyed giving them away. Mao laughed it off, and they discussed business, noting that the new Censor-in-chief, a man loyal to Yan, would facilitate their plans.
Privately, Yan Shifan dismissed Mao's claim that Lu Yi was fatally poisoned. Lu Yi and Jinxia entered a beautiful red-leaf forest teeming with snakes. Jinxia, who has a lifelong phobia, hid behind Lu Yi, who teased her about her fear. When a snake lunged, Lu Yi shielded her; when another attacked, Jinxia bravely shot it with her pistol. They soon spotted a log cabin and, assuming it was Lin Ling's, Jinxia again insisted on hiding Lu Yi's official token.
Inside the herb-filled cabin, they met the composed Dr. Lin Ling. Jinxia begged her to save Lu Yi. When questioned, Jinxia claimed to be Lu Yi's maid and spun a tearful, elaborate tale of forbidden love and elopement. Lu Yi played along, embracing her and apologizing for his "wife's" forwardness, which stirred a strange feeling in Jinxia.
However, Lin Ling had already deduced they were officials, recognizing Jinxia's government-issued pistol and that Lu Yi had taken Violet Antidote, a substance unavailable to the public. She reiterated her refusal to treat officials. Furious, Jinxia threatened to kill Lin Ling, but the doctor, unfazed, offered to save Lu Yi in a "life for a life" exchange. Without hesitation, Jinxia put her pistol to her own head.
She tearfully said goodbye to Lu Yi, asking him to care for her mother, master, and Yang Yue, and to leave offerings for her at the temple. As she pulled the trigger, Lu Yi used his remaining strength to save her. Witnessing her selfless act, Lin Ling finally agreed to treat him. Later, Lin Ling revealed she had only suppressed the poison in Lu Yi's body and had no intention of fully curing him.
Jinxia was enraged, but Lu Yi remained calm, stating he did not believe he was fated to die. The next morning, Jinxia cooked a meal for Lin Ling to win her over. Despite the imperfect food and Jinxia's disheveled appearance, Lin Ling was amused by her earnestness. Jinxia then checked on Lu Yi and found he had a high fever. In his sleep, he clutched her hand tightly, refusing to let go. Moved by his vulnerability, Jinxia strengthened her resolve to convince Lin Ling to save him.
