Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia found themselves bound to pillars, their limbs heavy and weak from an inhaled anesthetic that would render them powerless for several hours. Around them, an angry crowd of villagers clamored for their deaths, shouting to burn them as outsiders and bad omens. Despite their predicament, Yuan Jinxia defiantly cursed their captors. The village Chieftain, Shi, then arrived with a young Taoist priest, Lan Qingxuan, whom the villagers revered as Master Lan.

Declaring the pair "bad omens," Lan Qingxuan began a theatrical exorcism ceremony, complete with chants and what appeared to be magically summoned thunder. While the villagers were convinced, Yuan Jinxia rolled her eyes, certain he was a fraud. Still contemplating killing the captives, Chieftain Shi sought Lan Qingxuan's advice. Lan Qingxuan, secretly fearing divine wrath if they were killed, suggested they be locked up to await the gods' decision.

Chieftain Shi agreed and ordered them moved to a wood storage room. As they were dragged away, Yuan Jinxia continued to call Lan Qingxuan a "damned fraud." Afterward, Lan Qingxuan accepted remuneration from Chieftain Shi, and they discussed the Shi family's long history in the village and their reluctance to move. Meanwhile, Yang Yue and Shangguan Xi followed Yuan Jinxia's marks to a cliff, though Yang Yue struggled to interpret their direction.

Inside the wood storage room, Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia discussed the peculiar village, noting it was absent from any Yangzhou map and wondering about the strange disappearance of the Japanese pirates. They also pondered the "mad men," who were incredibly strong, felt no pain, and seemed to be controlled by a bamboo flute. A kind elderly woman, the Chieftain's wife, brought them a mat for comfort.

Yuan Jinxia tried to explain their innocence, while Lu Yi quickly claimed that Yuan Jinxia was his unwell wife and they were searching for a rare herb nearby. The lady expressed sympathy but admitted she was powerless to intervene, though she promised to relay their words to the chieftain. After she left, Yuan Jinxia questioned Lu Yi's choice to pretend they were married instead of siblings.

Lu Yi explained that a husband risking his life for his sick wife would evoke far more sympathy. He then leaned against Yuan Jinxia, claiming fatigue, causing her to freeze. Elsewhere, Lan Qingxuan was enjoying liquor and roasted chicken when the Chieftain's young son, Xiaoxin, burst in. Xiaoxin threatened to expose Lan Qingxuan for breaking Taoist rules, but Lan Qingxuan quickly bribed him with chicken, claiming the old rules were outdated and true devotion came from the heart.

As night fell, Shangguan Xi continued to drink heavily, much to Yang Yue's concern. In her drunken haze, she mistook Yang Yue for Xie Xiao, lamenting why everyone but Xie Xiao himself could see her feelings for him. Yang Yue tried to comfort her, but Shangguan Xi clarified, "You are not him. You can't replace him." Her words saddened Yang Yue deeply as she finally fell asleep.

Back in the wood storage room, Lu Yi, having recovered his strength, quietly untied himself and Yuan Jinxia. Later, Lan Qingxuan, attempting to leave the village, made his way to a cliff but discovered the vine ladder had been destroyed. Before he could react, Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia appeared and cornered him.

Faced with the sheer drop, Lan Qingxuan frantically begged for mercy and confessed that the Shi family had been in hiding for years, but six months ago, a strange disease began turning villagers into violent, pain-resistant "mad men." He admitted to fabricating the "wrath of the gods" narrative to save their lives. Furious, Yuan Jinxia beat him. Lan Qingxuan then recounted seeing several black-clad men dragging someone into the forest earlier that night.

Suspecting it might be Xie Xiao, Lu Yi and Yuan Jinxia compelled the fearful Lan Qingxuan to lead them. Reluctantly, Lan Qingxuan led them through the forest, where they stumbled upon Xie Xiao being attacked by multiple "mad men." They fought off the attackers and rescued him, noting that the assailants stopped their pursuit the moment Xie Xiao fell into a body of water. Meanwhile, Yang Chengwan and Yang Yue grew deeply worried about their missing companions.

In another location, Di Lanye informed Yan Shifan that Lu Yi had found Longdan village. Unconcerned, Yan Shifan ordered the local leader to be on alert and to "do what needs to be done" if necessary. As Yuan Jinxia bandaged Xie Xiao's injuries, he smiled, reminded of his childhood when she would tend to his scrapes. He began to express his feelings for her, but Lu Yi interrupted them.

Lan Qingxuan led them to a small wooden hut he had found. Lu Yi suggested they stay there for the night, instructing Yuan Jinxia and Lan Qingxuan to clean the hut while he went hunting. He then goaded a reluctant Xie Xiao into joining him. As Lu Yi and Xie Xiao set off, their competitive natures flared.

Xie Xiao accused Lu Yi of trying to separate him from Yuan Jinxia, while Lu Yi countered that she was merely his subordinate, subtly reminding Xie Xiao of his recent marriage rejection. They returned with a wild chicken caught by Lu Yi. Yuan Jinxia complimented Lu Yi's skill, prompting a jealous Xie Xiao to vow he would hunt a bigger one tomorrow.

When they ate, Xie Xiao offered a chicken leg to Yuan Jinxia, but she passed it to Lu Yi, much to Xie Xiao's chagrin. Lan Qingxuan then formally introduced himself. Noticing Yuan Jinxia consistently addressing Lu Yi as "Your Excellency," he shrewdly deduced they were officials, which Lu Yi confirmed, stating they were investigating a case. During the meal, Xie Xiao recounted his terrifying escape, explaining he had been chased to a cliff and forced to jump into the water.

He revealed the crucial detail: the mad men stopped attacking him the moment he entered the water. Lu Yi's expression turned serious as he deduced that the mad men distinguish friend from foe by smell, which the water had masked. They summarized the characteristics of the "Mad Men's Disease": unusual violence, an absence of pain, and a lack of fear, noting they only attack uninfected people.

Lan Qingxuan, hearing of Japanese pirates, realized with a shock that the black-clad men he had seen were pirates. Lu Yi confirmed they were the same ones who had murdered people in the Wu'an Sect. He concluded that the mad men and the Japanese pirates were undoubtedly connected, and that unless they solved this mystery, they might never leave the village alive.
