Wei Wuxian silently made his way to Jinlintai, where he spotted Jiang Yanli’s frail silhouette and dared not approach. Inside the mourning hall, Jiang Yanli sat beside Jin Ling, consumed by grief. The Jin Matriarch, deeply saddened, went to get some food for Jiang Yanli and discovered Wei Wuxian hiding in the shadows. Upon hearing the commotion, Jiang Yanli rushed out holding Jin Ling.

She didn't blame Wei Wuxian but wept in anguish as the Jin Matriarch cried out for help. With tears in his eyes, Wei Wuxian had no choice but to flee into a nearby forest. There, the dark energy from the Stygian Tiger Amulet enveloped him, pushing him to the brink of losing control. Meanwhile, rumors spread amongst the common folk.

It was said that the Wen remnants who came to seek punishment were slaughtered by the Jin clan, their bodies hung on the city walls for three days. The leaders, Wen Ning and Wen Qing, were cremated, their ashes to be scattered to demonstrate 'heavenly justice'. People whispered that Wei Wuxian's "mad dog," Wen Ning, had gone berserk at Jinlintai, causing carnage.

They lamented the Lan clan's misfortune, as most of the thirty-plus cultivators killed at Qiongqi Road were their own, there only to help quell the unrest. With the Ghost General and his sister now reduced to ash, they believed Wei Wuxian would finally understand the consequences and spoke with satisfaction of the upcoming mobilization meeting at Nevernight to deal with him. Suddenly, Wei Wuxian, who had been standing unnoticed behind the crowd, spoke, startling everyone.

He challenged their empty threats, asking what they planned to do to him. When one cultivator dared him to face the clan leaders at the meeting instead of bullying low-rank cultivators, Wei Wuxian, enraged, played Chenqing, knocking many to the ground. Coldly stating that "every injustice has its perpetrator," he declared he wouldn't waste time on them and resolved to go to the mobilization meeting to settle the score.

That evening at Nevernight, Jin Guangshan, surrounded by other clan leaders, performed a ritual scattering the ashes of Wen Qing and Wen Ning. He vowed that the remaining Wen clan members and Wei Wuxian, the Yiling Patriarch, would face the same fate the next day. Just then, a chilling laugh echoed from the roof. Everyone looked up to see Wei Wuxian, clad in black, leaning casually on the eaves.

Jin Guangshan berated his audacity, but Wei Wuxian was unfazed, retorting that he had always been arrogant and had once fought five thousand men alone during the Sunshot Campaign. Wei Wuxian challenged Jin Guangshan, asking who had promised the matter would be resolved if Wen Qing and Wen Ning surrendered, only to now vow to scatter his and the other Wens' ashes. Jin Guangshan evasively called them "two different things," accusing Wei Wuxian of the slaughter at Qiongqi Road.

Wei Wuxian shot back, demanding to know who the true instigator at Qiongqi Road was and how he could have controlled Wen Ning at Jinlintai from miles away. Others interjected that even if Jin Zixun started it, Wei Wuxian's retaliation was too brutal. Wei Wuxian exposed their hypocrisy: they could try to kill him without restraint, but his self-defense was a crime. When they accused him of cursing Jin Zixun, Wei Wuxian demanded proof.

They had none, arguing he was the most likely suspect due to an old grudge, which Wei Wuxian dismissed, saying Jin Zixun was too insignificant to remember. A Jin clan disciple, who had been shouting insults, suddenly shot an arrow, hitting Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian calmly pulled out the arrow and threw it back, killing the attacker instantly. Jin Guangshan, aghast, ordered his forces to form a battle array, vowing Wei Wuxian would not leave alive.

Amidst the chaos, Jiang Cheng appeared conflicted, while Jin Guangyao watched with a hint of schadenfreude. The battle erupted. Wei Wuxian played Chenqing, directing a torrent of resentful energy that attacked the cultivators but spared the Jiang clan disciples. Just then, Lan Wangji descended gracefully with his guqin. Wei Wuxian smiled, remarking that he always knew a true battle between them was inevitable. Lan Wangji urged him to stop, insisting "the situation has changed" and "it's not that simple."

Before he could explain, Wei Wuxian heard a familiar voice cry, "A Xian!" It was Jiang Yanli, and he immediately moved to find her. The battlefield devolved into chaos. As Wei Wuxian descended, cultivators lunged at him. Lan Wangji told Wei Wuxian to play his flute while he provided defense. But as Wei Wuxian began to play, another flute melody emerged from the shadows.

The resentful energy spun out of his control, rampaging with greater ferocity and attacking everyone, including the Jiang clan disciples. The newly fallen warriors rose as murderous puppets animated by the mysterious tune, turning the scene into a hellscape. Jiang Yanli, searching frantically, was struck from behind by a puppet. Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng cried out and rushed to her side.

She weakly caressed Wei Wuxian's face, chiding him for running off so fast she couldn't get a proper word with him. At that moment, a cultivator lunged to attack Wei Wuxian from behind. Jiang Yanli shoved him aside, taking the fatal blow herself. Horrified, the attacker confessed he had meant to kill Wei Wuxian to avenge his brother. As Jiang Cheng cradled his sister in anguish, a consumed Wei Wuxian killed the man, but it was too late. Jiang Yanli coughed up blood, her life fading away.
