Following her grandfather's death at the hands of the Gold Deity, Luo Mingxuan, a grief-stricken Lu Zhaoyao's faith in the self-proclaimed righteous sects is shattered. She vows revenge, no longer believing in their hypocrisy. She establishes her own sect, Wanlu Men, to fight injustice on her own terms. Over the next five years, she becomes the feared Demoness, a master who gathers all those wronged by the Immortal Sects.
Her power grows until she successfully seals the immortal Luo Mingxuan, entrusting the man she once saved, Mo Qing, with guarding the mountain gate. Five years later, the martial world learns that the legendary Wanjun Sword is about to reappear. The Immortal Sects, led by a vengeful Lady Changyu, plot to ambush Zhaoyao at the Sword Tomb to avenge Luo Mingxuan.
To consolidate power, Changyu also secretly orders Liu Wei to eliminate a dissenting elder, Qin Yu, an act that is witnessed by his daughter, Qin Zhiyan. Upon learning that a group of assassins from various sects are plotting against her, Zhaoyao confronts them alone. She proposes a bet: she will not defend herself, and if they fail to kill her in the time it takes to eat a candied hawthorn, they must all commit suicide.
She effortlessly defeats them, reinforcing her fearsome reputation. Zhaoyao then leads her forces to the Sword Tomb, a place she calls her "peak." After her subordinates secure the entrance, she enters alone to claim the Wanjun Sword. Inside, she is ambushed by the Immortal Sects' Kill Formation, a trap laid by Lady Changyu.
Though Zhaoyao manages to overpower Changyu, she is wounded by the tomb's potent demonic energy and further injured by a sudden blast of power from the Wanjun Sword itself. Mo Qing, hearing Zhaoyao is in danger, rushes into the tomb. Seeing him arrive, the severely wounded Zhaoyao decides to manipulate his devotion. She gives him her personal mirror, promising him status and power if he uses it to lure away the pursuing sect members so she can escape.
Unaware of her intentions, Mo Qing readily agrees. As Mo Qing draws the enemies away, he is injured in the fight. His blood spills onto the ground, unexpectedly awakening the Wanjun Sword, as only the blood of the Demon King's true heir can summon it. Compelled by an irresistible call, Mo Qing grasps the sword and becomes its new master. Zhaoyao witnesses this and realizes he is the Demon King's son.
Feeling utterly betrayed, she misinterprets his years of loyalty as a long-con to steal the sword. Enraged, she attacks him to reclaim it but is violently repelled by its power, which sends her plummeting into the abyss below, where she vanishes. With Zhaoyao gone, Mo Qing becomes the new, reluctant leader of Wanlu Men, though he is tormented by her disappearance. His leadership is immediately contested by the North Mountain Master, who remains loyal to Zhaoyao.
Meanwhile, in the Qianchen Pavilion, Qin Qianxian grows suspicious that Liu Wei murdered Qin Yu after noticing a faint black mark on his neck. Qin Zhiyan, failing to convince anyone of the murder, flees in despair and stumbles into a hidden cave. There, she accidentally falls, and her blood drips onto Zhaoyao's hidden body, miraculously bringing the supposedly dead Demoness back to life.
