Subject Three of the assessment required participants to prepare four dishes and one soup in a field environment, with the fastest team winning. Yan Poyue and Lu Xiaotian built the smokeless stove using a method taught by Fan Jin, with Yan Poyue assuring his squad leader they would secure victory. However, as they prepared to light the fire, Guo Kui discovered they were out of solid alcohol.

Fan Jing, anxious about the dwindling time, quickly instructed everyone to gather tree branches, managing to ignite only one stove. Facing a severe fuel shortage, Yan Poyue, after a quick whispered consultation with Fan Jing, decided on an unorthodox strategy: he dumped all the tofu into a single pot. While Company One and Company Two presented standard four-dish, one-soup meals, Special Service Company offered four distinct variations of braised tofu.

Yan Poyue proudly presented their dishes to Staff Officer Zhang, describing them in detail: first, Braised tofu with dried bamboo shoots, then Braised tofu with sweet pork, followed by Braised tofu with potato and egg, and finally, Braised tofu with wine, along with Tofu soup with scallion oil. Initially, Staff Officer Zhang was displeased, questioning how a single ingredient could constitute four dishes. Fan Jing quickly interjected, explaining the unique flavors of each dish and urging her to taste them.

After sampling the meals, Staff Officer Zhang's demeanor softened. She announced that all three companies had completed the task in one hour and thirty minutes, and their meals met wartime supply requirements, resulting in a tie. The final phase of the assessment was to navigate enemy blockades and deliver the prepared meals to their respective command posts.

As they ventured into Company One's defense zone, Lu Xiao Tian nearly stepped on what he thought was a landmine, but Fan Jing swiftly intervened. Yan Poyue, impressed by Fan Jing's 'mine clearance' skills, asked Fan Jing to teach him, to which Fan Jing humorously replied that he should focus on mastering cooking first. Yan Poyue and Fan Jing then proceeded to scout the area, successfully capturing two Company One sentries and seizing their communication devices.

The captured soldiers revealed that Company One had completely cut off Special Service Company's communication and that their main force, led by Squad Leader Xiao Fei, was on the verge of taking their command post. Fan Jing, excited by the prospect of facing Xiao Fei, then showed Yan Poyue an automatic grenade launcher, calling it a "bigger slingshot" and instructing him that it was his moment to prove himself.

Collaborating, Yan Poyue and Fan Jing used the grenade launcher to ambush Xiao Fei and his entire squad, neutralizing Company One's first squad. Enraged, Xiao Fei could only watch as the two celebrated. Using the captured communication devices, they pinpointed Company One's command post and swiftly launched an attack. Meanwhile, Li Xiang and his comrades, still waiting at their command post, were startled to hear the kitchen squad's shouts announcing mealtime.

Suspecting a trap, Ai Qianxue ventured out to investigate and was astonished to find Yan Poyue and the kitchen squad delivering meals, with Xiao Fei and his men already in the captive zone. Yan Poyue, deflecting credit, explained that their success was due to Fan Jing's expert command and the entire kitchen squad's efforts, having seized the enemy's communication equipment and raided their command post. The Special Service Company was declared victorious.

Fan Jing eagerly pulled Yan Poyue forward to accept accolades. Soon after, the Regiment Commander arrived, perplexed as to how Special Service Company had triumphed despite their communications being severed. Ai Qianxue explained the events and gave credit to Yan Poyue. Yan Poyue humbly attributed the victory to the collective effort of the kitchen squad, emphasizing his role as merely a cook performing his duty.

The Regiment Commander tasted the tofu dishes, praising their excellent flavor, and Fan Jing declared them the Special Service Company's "victory dish." From that day forward, eating braised tofu became a cherished tradition for new recruits in the Tiger Special Service Company the night before any assessment or drill, believed to guarantee success in battle.

During a subsequent week of heavy rain, which provided a rare period of leisure for the new recruits, Ai Qianxue visited the kitchen squad to finalize details for her drill report. Fan Jing quickly ushered Yan Poyue to speak with her. Ai Qianxue returned Lu Xiaotian's letter to Yan Poyue, admitting she didn't know the author but believed they harbored no ill will.

She affirmed Yan Poyue's capabilities, stating he didn't need external help and could achieve his aspirations through his own efforts. Yan Poyue, grateful for her words, then posed a question to Ai Qianxue: why, with her impressive education and abilities, did she choose to remain in the Rapid Deployment Regiment instead of pursuing a more distinguished career elsewhere? Ai Qianxue responded that her elder brother had also served there.

Later that week, Xiao Yun Jie visited Yan Poyue, expressing his happiness about Yan Poyue's recent achievements and noting the newfound respect he commanded. Xiao Yun Jie confided his frustration about being transferred to the combat squad alone, believing it was Li Xiang's deliberate attempt to provoke Yan Poyue.

He urged Yan Poyue to set aside his pride and speak a few soft words to Li Xiang, assuring him that such a gesture, especially after his recent display of talent, would guarantee his return to the combat squad. However, Yan Poyue steadfastly refused, declaring that respect was earned through action, not through pleading. Despite Yan Poyue's stance, Fan Jing attempted to intercede on his behalf with Li Xiang, even bringing chili from his hometown.

Li Xiang remained firm, insisting that Yan Poyue must approach him directly. Li Xiang then informed Fan Jing that his mother and fiancée, Xiao Ting, would be visiting and asked Guo Kui to pick them up from town when he went for supplies. Fan Jing jokingly reminded Li Xiang that Xiao Ting wasn't officially his wife yet. On the way back to the base, Guo Kui, Li Xiang's mother, and Xiao Ting entered a tunnel undergoing maintenance.

A speeding truck veered out of control and overturned, blocking the tunnel and trapping them. Guo Kui used Xiao Ting's phone to call the regiment for help, but with Li Xiang in a meeting, Fan Jing immediately mobilized the kitchen squad and rushed to the scene. Xiao Ting, being a nurse, bravely joined Guo Kui in helping the truck driver. As they worked, the tunnel began to crack, threatening to collapse. Li Xiang's mother was still inside Guo Kui's vehicle.

Without hesitation, Yan Poyue dashed back into the unstable tunnel to rescue her. Fan Jing and Lu Xiao Tian managed to pull Xiao Ting to safety, but when they tried to follow Yan Poyue, the tunnel catastrophically collapsed, transforming into a heap of rubble. Yan Poyue was trapped beneath the debris, his calls for help unanswered, with only the distant sound of a siren breaking the silence. Li Xiang soon arrived, and Xiao Ting frantically informed him that his mother and a soldier were still trapped inside.
