Ling Buyi came to the manor at night and immediately asked for the topographic map of the Shu region. However, Wan Songbai pretended not to understand, thinking he could muddle through. Unexpectedly, Cheng Shaoshang suddenly came asking for a place to stay. At first, Wan Songbai didn’t look closely, but when he did, he noticed Cheng Shaoshang’s miserable state and hurriedly agreed.

As Cheng Shaoshang turned and entered the house, Ling Buyi seemed to change his mind and used the excuse of no dinner being prepared to stay overnight at the Wan manor. That evening, Cheng Shaoshang went to pay her respects to Old Madam Wan as per etiquette and discovered that the old lady had a hearing problem in her left ear, though she showed no sign of it.

After Cheng Shaoshang and Wan Qiqi left, Madam Wan began criticizing Cheng Shaoshang for being impulsive and lacking patience. However, Old Madam Wan thought Cheng Shaoshang was just like her younger self and expressed dissatisfaction with Xiao Yuanyi’s conduct. If Cheng Shi were also a coward only concerned with self-preservation, she would never have let Wan Songbai become sworn brothers with him. In times of chaos, allies who won’t step up at crucial moments are useless.

So Old Madam Wan sighed that her son still had no heirs, but thankfully, she was very fond of Wan Qiqi. Madam Wan, feeling guilty, wanted to get her husband a concubine, but Old Madam Wan refused—after all, she was not a foolish or corrupt person. Just then, a servant reported that Ling Buyi had not touched any alcohol and was staying in the guest room. Old Madam Wan’s expression changed drastically.

While her father was distracted, Wan Qiqi sneaked away with a bottle of Thousand Miles Drunk and shared it with Cheng Shaoshang as they chatted in the room. Ling Buyi happened to pass by the window. When speaking of Old Madam Wan, Wan Qiqi could not hide her admiration.

Back then, she came from a poor family, very different in status from the Wan family, but Old Master Wan fell in love with her at first sight and married her with the highest honors. After marriage, they were harmonious and loving. Sadly, the old master died too early, before he could entrust his wife and child to someone reliable.

Other clan members then came forward, accusing Old Madam Wan of being unfit to manage the household and claiming she would surely remarry. Realizing oaths were useless, Old Madam Wan cut off her left ear on the spot and threw it at the ringleader, vowing never to remarry. Hearing this story, Cheng Shaoshang also thought she was a true heroine and couldn’t help but yearn for love.

Compared to Wan Qiqi, who would marry a great hero, Cheng Shaoshang had no such fantasies. After all, Xiao Yuanyi had never taught her strategy or the family genealogies, so she imagined she’d find an ordinary man to live a peaceful life with. Ling Buyi, upon hearing her words, walked away thoughtfully. Lou Yao stood at the door hesitating for a long time, unsure of how to speak. Suddenly, the door opened, and his older brother Lou Ben came out.

Upon hearing that Lou Yao wanted to break off his engagement, Lou Ben agreed readily and even noticed he already had someone he liked. But Lou Yao concealed it, saying he would speak honestly when things progressed. The next morning, Wan Qiqi wanted to take Cheng Shaoshang to the horse farm, but Cheng Shaoshang preferred exploring the buildings in the manor, including a curved little bridge. The bridge had weathered many storms and was now unstable.

Yet, it was exquisitely made, not something ordinary craftsmen could repair—so the steward thought it best to dismantle and rebuild it. Cheng Shaoshang asked Wan Qiqi to go ahead to the horse farm. Unexpectedly, Ling Buyi and Wan Songbai arrived, frightening her into hiding under the bridge. Ling Buyi still wanted Wan Songbai to hand over the topographic map and, realizing Cheng Shaoshang was hiding, deliberately spoke loudly and stomped on the bridge before leaving.

Once they were gone, Cheng Shaoshang quickly climbed out from under the bridge and rushed to the horse farm. Unfortunately, she didn’t know how to ride and nearly fell off. Luckily, Ling Buyi leaped onto the horse and steadied it, putting her foot into the stirrup, which made Cheng Shaoshang very uncomfortable.

When Cheng Shaoshang tried to use the propriety between men and women as an excuse to reject the closeness, Ling Buyi once again brought up what he had said at the princess's manor. Cheng Shaoshang realized he was teasing her and couldn’t get a word out. Ling Buyi then slapped the horse, watching as it ran wildly with Cheng Shaoshang on its back, and couldn’t help but smile.

To get Cheng Shaoshang’s help in obtaining the map, Ling Buyi revealed the whole story—if someone with ulterior motives made an issue of it, the Cheng family could get implicated. In truth, Wan Songbai wasn’t a traitor; he simply treated the map as a treasure map and didn’t understand the seriousness. Cheng Shaoshang and Ling Buyi struck a deal, and she disguised herself as Wan Qiqi to sneak into the study.

Old Madam Wan entered from outside, quickly recognizing Cheng Shaoshang and going along with the ruse, deliberately revealing the location of the map. That evening, Old Madam Wan scolded her son alone. Cheng Shaoshang declined Wan Qiqi’s invitation to stay and was leaving with an umbrella when she suddenly heard Wan Songbai screaming from the study, sending chills down her spine. By the time Cheng Shaoshang returned home, it was evening.

Without greeting her siblings, she immediately went to see her parents, mentioning only the map and not Ling Buyi. Xiao Yuanyi, understanding the military implications, advised Cheng Shi not to get involved and warned Cheng Shaoshang to keep it a secret. The topographic map confirmed suspicions that the Shu region was poised to act. Since Ling Buyi was about to accompany the Emperor on a western tour, he had to prepare ahead to avoid ambush.

His plan was to strike quickly and decisively. That night, Prince Yong’s manor was attacked by bandits. Though nothing was lost, Ling Buyi led the Black Armor Guards to surround the manor and ordered a thorough search.
