Love Beyond the Grave Episode 36 Recap
> Love Beyond the Grave Recaps
In the depths of the Void, the situation has turned dire. Although Yan Ke has obtained the Spirits Lantern, he remains unable to wield its true power. Meanwhile, He Simu remains at the throne, dealing with the aftermath of the recent chaos. A group of evil spirits dares to challenge her, claiming that without the Spirits Lantern, she is no longer the Sovereign of Spirits and that the throne is up for grabs.
He Simu remains unmoved, declaring that the throne is only a seat of power because she is the one sitting upon it. With a swift wave of her sleeve, she easily suppresses the rebellious spirits, asserting that her authority does not depend on a lamp. Fengyi and the other temple lords report that Yan Ke has issued a surrender edict to the 24 Temples and released puppet spirits to attack the Fusang Tree.
He Simu realizes that Yan Ke is using the Chiling Secret Technique to control these puppets even from the Mortal World, implying he has devoured many spirits to bolster his strength. To stabilize the Void, He Simu uses a formation left by her father to seal the exit, decreeing that no spirits may leave. She knows the Spirits Lantern follows the strongest master, and as long as she remains the Sovereign, it will never truly belong to Yan Ke.
In the Mortal World, Duan Xu is recovering from the poison previously inflicted by Lu Da. Fengyi provides him with a "Rescue Pill" from his sect to restore his vitality, but he warns Duan Xu that the damage caused by the fading of his five senses is irreversible. Duan Xu is deeply grateful for the help.
Burdened by lingering doubts and his failing health, Duan Xu asks Fengyi to bring a message to He Simu, telling her that he is confused and wishes to see her one last time. Fengyi delivers the message, but He Simu, though concerned, remains focused on her duties in the Void, instructing Fengyi to continue watching over him. The political situation in Nandu has grown perilous. With Emperor Liang gravely ill, the capital has become a hornets' nest of competing factions.
Prince Su and Prince Ji, backed by Chancellor Du and Duke Pei, are eager to seize power. The Emperor, remembering how he once tasked Duan Xu and Fang Xianye to support Prince Jin, issues a secret decree for Duan Xu to return to the capital to protect the throne. Fang Xianye immediately attempts to send this urgent message to Youzhou, but Duke Pei’s men intercept the courier, killing him and destroying the letter to ensure Duan Xu remains isolated.
Unaware of the interference, Duan Xu focuses on the war effort, developing a lethal new arrowhead forged from Tianluo Ore. Commandant Wu is impressed by the weapon's superior penetration compared to standard iron, seeing it as a vital tool to defeat the Chong army. However, Yan Ke soon initiates a more personal attack. Realizing he cannot master the Spirits Lantern alone, he kidnaps Duan Xu to use him as leverage against He Simu.
When Duan Xu sees the Lantern hanging from Yan Ke’s waist, he realizes He Simu sacrificed her supreme treasure to save his life. While Duan Xu is missing, the Chong army launches a fierce assault. In the absence of their commander, the young soldier Chenying steps forward to lead the vanguard, determined to protect the granary at Qizhou and the people of Youzhou. The battle is brutal.
He Simu, hearing Chenying's dying cries, rushes to the Mortal World, but she arrives too late. She finds Chenying standing tall, still clutching the military flag despite being riddled with arrows. Overcome with grief, she recalls their time together and gently closes his eyes, later burying him beside his father. He Simu eventually tracks Yan Ke’s aura to confront him.
Yan Ke uses a Glazed Pagoda to temporarily trap her and attempts to force Duan Xu to exchange his five senses with her again. Yan Ke’s goal is to strip He Simu of her spirit power while her essence is trapped, forcing the Spirits Lantern to recognize him as its new master. He mocks the bond between the two, telling Duan Xu that he is merely a toy. However, the plan goes awry.
During the struggle, Lu Da suddenly betrays Yan Ke, grabbing the Spirits Lantern and swallowing it. Although Lu Da briefly marvels at a human's ability to use the treasure, he is almost immediately consumed by a violent backfire. He Simu breaks free from the Glazed Pagoda and rescues the weakened Duan Xu, bringing him back to the military camp. When Duan Xu finally wakes, the two are forced to confront the truth.
Duan Xu reveals he kept the sensory fading a secret because he wanted He Simu to continue experiencing the colors, scents, and melodies of the world through him. He Simu finally admits her true feelings: she had distanced herself because she loves him too much and cannot bear the thought of watching him die. Before she departs, she softly tells him the heavy news that Chenying has fallen in battle and now rests beside his father.
